As war threatens to return to Draykemire and tensions between the courtier and noble classes grow, nobleman-by-day assassin-by-night Lord Silas Graveston has a choice to make—Ignore the insult to his family strutting about the queen’s palace on the arm of his enemy or endanger his recent promotion as the public right-hand of his duke.
A CAPTIVE FAE
The provocation—a stolen emerald necklace—and the fae who wears it are both more than they appear. The necklace bears layered enchantments tantamount to a curse, and the fae cloaks herself in as many secrets as Silas himself.
Her name is Natalya Slipshayde, and she’s come to the court for a single purpose. Revenge.
A MISSING HEIR
Neither Silas nor Natalya realize that they’re tangled in forces far greater than treacherous courtly wiles and personal vendettas. There’s a battle for the future of Draykemire being waged behind the whispers of the court. And at the center of that battle, the search for a missing fae heir who’s the key to the future of both the kingdom and her world.
A morally gray hero and a stabby heroine find themselves bound together in this first-in-series epic romantic fantasy with courtly intrigue, found family, and forced proximity.

Beth is one of those authors where if she writes it, I’m going to read it and it’s going to be a 5⭐️ read for me. Her writing style is so immersive and beautiful! Think if Rachel Gillig wrote high fantasy, and you would get Beth’s writing. Her world building is top tier, her characters are always well fleshed out, and the stories are always captivating.
This was my first Beth Ball book! I have a couple of hers on my TBR but as you all might know by now my ARC TBR is always incredibly long and even when I say I’m going to take it easy I still don’t 🤪🤪 I loved the world building in this book! Beth creates worlds like I haven’t seen before and it was so easy to picture this world in my head thanks to how descriptive she is! The MMC Silas?? Oh my gosh I love him! He’s very gentle with the FMC and tries to be as understanding with his courtesans as possible! He’s definitely on my book boyfriend list. I loved unfolding the mystery of our FMC Natalya and figuring out how she became the person she is. If you are looking for a high Romantasy to read add this to your TBR! Phantom releases March 10th! Thank you to Hidden Hollows for including me on this book tour!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️ However you may have felt about the first edition of this book, you need to give this second and revised edition a chance. We need more books like this in the epic romantic fantasy space!
Thank you, Beth Ball, for an eARC.
I loved the first edition, but this just expanded upon and added additional reasons to love this book and series. There is not a single poorly written character in this book. Side characters have more personality than some people I meet out in the wild. Even our villains have full and interesting backstories. Our main characters, though, I am absolutely in love with them both. MMC Silas is the perfect balance of gentleman, protective, and the right degree of possessive. FMC Natalya is a force! She needs no one, she is feisty, protective, and absolutely lethal. There are so many dynamics I just love about these two but one of my favorites is how different their training and upbringing were but yet they are still equal to each other in skill while still only making the other better with what they bring to the partnership.
Beth is my favorite epic fantasy romance author, and Phantom first edition was my first book by her and this second edition has just cemented that fact for me. The world she has created and the POVs she chooses to tell her stories always make me appreciate the book that much more. The more of her books and series you read, the more small Easter eggs you find, and sometimes even understand why some things are the way they are. I have a not so small wishlist of spinoff stories I am dying to hear about times, places and characters in her world. I know some people struggle with deep worldbuilding but Beth has even made some helpful guides on her website to help there.
I've read nothing quite like Phantom, it was so hard for me to put this book down. From the court culture, the political intrigue, the different ways of life across a single kingdom and even just the different lifestyles of all the characters and then add in a unique and interesting low magic system and its users, alchemy and super hot uses of bladed weapons. This book just ticked all the boxes and I can not wait for book two Pain! If you are a fan of Tortured Souls by Melissa K. Roehrich or The Legends of Thezmarr, definitely check out Phantom. After reading make sure to get your fill of emotional damage from the prequel Promise.
Natalya’s assistance felt more like partnership, the word his father had so often used when he spoke of his relationship with Mother before her death. Comfort helped in his preparations by summarizing the scouting reports, but he had never expected to meet a courtesan able to conspire in matters of the sword, as Natalya was doing. 🗡️ “If you’ll excuse me, I must endeavor to appear less feral.”

Epic romantic fantasy? Yes please! I really enjoyed the first edition of Phantom but this one is even bigger and better🔥. I love the multi POV and the banter. And the new cover is fierce🤩
Beth Ball is one of my favorite authors. She creates such immersive worlds, and intriguing characters. The kind of worlds you wish to visit and the characters you want to meet in real life. Honestly though, the writing is so detailed and beautiful, you feel like you’re right there with them.

Phantom, the first book in the Heirs of Lilith series, is the second book I've read by Beth Ball, and it was outstanding! I love how we learn about each character more and more as the story unfolds. Natalya seemed fairly straight forward when I started reading, but I started to see more to her as the story progressed. We get to see more of Silas as he starts to learn more about himself, and what he thinks he should/could have compared to what he decides he really wants. Watching as Natalya and Silas first start to interact was a lot of fun, and seeing their bond grow was heartwarming.
The whole world the author sets up is so rich without being overwhelming. Every character brings in their own thoughts and feelings about each aspect of the realms, and as the reader we get to see the good and the bad as each character sees it. We get to come to our own conclusions, trying to figure out which is the right one and which isn't. We also get to see so many sides to numerous characters, trying to figure out the roles they will ultimately play. And you might be right, but I'll say this: Beth Ball likes to throw a twist in her stories. You guys, I truly did not see some of these coming! The ending is a decent cliffhanger, but thankfully, the next book in the series, Pain, is out in April, so I won't be waiting long!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars Spice: a couple short, spicy scenes with somewhat tame descriptions
Silas lives a carefully split life: noble by day, assassin by night. When a mysterious courtesan arrives at court wearing a necklace stolen from his family and carrying a vendetta of her own, his tidy balance starts to crumble. Neither of them realizes they've stepped into something much bigger than personal grudges and court gossip, and the consequences ripple far beyond the palace walls.
This revised second edition is on an entirely different level from the original. I had already read an earlier version while beta reading, so I knew it would be stronger, but the finished book still managed to surprise me. The characters feel more layered and far more realistic. Motivations are clearer without being simplistic, and the emotional beats land easily.
Beth Ball's writing is as elegant and atmospheric as ever. If you've read her previous work, this feels like a return to that slightly more sophisticated romantic fantasy style. There is a palpable danger to the court, a weighty history behind the conflicts, and tension humming under polite conversations. This leans much closer to what I'd call elevated romantasy or perhaps just romantic fantasy. The romance is swoony, but it grows out of character and circumstance rather than overshadowing the story.
Silas is especially interesting because he doesn't fit neatly into a single character trope. He can be ruthless, manipulative, and terrifyingly competent, but he's also thoughtful and unexpectedly gentle. He tries to treat people with fairness where he can, even while doing morally questionable things when necessary. That balance makes him feel like an actual person rather than a fantasy ideal. Natalya is equally compelling: sharp-edged, secretive, and driven by goals that don't always align with what's best for anyone else. And I loved how thrown she is when she receives kindness from those around her.
The world-building is expansive and immersive. Ball thrives in the world-building space. Details surface naturally through the story instead of being dumped on the reader. By the time everything starts converging near the end, it's clear how carefully those threads were laid. The final stretch pulls the emotional threads taut in a way that feels both intense and satisfying, leaving you eager for the next book.
I also have to mention Comfort and Vice, who absolutely stole the show for me. Their storyline adds warmth, vulnerability, and a different kind of love to balance the sharper edges of the main plot, and I found myself just as invested in them as in Silas and Natalya. A big strength in this story is how real the supporting cast feels. Side characters aren't just there to serve the protagonists; they have their own histories, loyalties, and reasons for being where they are. It's the type of book where you know the characters are actually doing their own thing off-page instead of just waiting for the main characters to appear again. Even the antagonists come across as people shaped by circumstance rather than cartoon villains. Their motivations make sense, and sometimes you might even agree with their motivations and not their actions. It makes the conflicts feel FAR more believable.
Overall, this version of Phantom feels richer, deeper, and more confident in what it's trying to do. It delivers court intrigue, dangerous circumstances, morally gray choices, and layered relationships. If you like fantasy that prioritizes character depth and atmosphere alongside romance, this one is absolutely worth picking up, even if you've read the earlier edition.
Thanks so much to Hidden Hollow Tours and Beth Ball for the pre-released complimentary copy. This review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.
I loved the first edition of Phantom last summer, but y’all… The revised second edition of this book is PHENOMENAL. Even if you’ve read the 1st edition already, everyone who loves epic romantic fantasy needs to read this expanded 2nd edition. You can tell how much work Beth put into this version to expand and elevate this already amazing story.
Beth has such a way with storytelling, and the world building and lore in this book are so immersive and rich. And she added so much depth to not only the main characters, but also the side characters in this story.
In addition to the immersive world building and rich lore in this story, there was so much to love in this book. We got morally grey characters, a stabby FMC, forced proximity, rivals to lovers, a delicious slow burn, found family, banter, assassins, secret identities, courtly intrigue, destiny, an unfinished prophecy, multiple POVs, and so much more!
I loved the dynamic and banter between Natalya and Silas, and it was inevitable for their slow burn romance to ignite into something more. We also got to see Silas and Natalya bond while working together as assassins, and you can feel Silas’s joy at finally getting to share that side of himself with someone he cares about.
In addition to our main characters having more depth in this version, the side characters, and even the villains, were all reworked as well. Every character seemed to have a rich backstory, and that made the story even better in my opinion. I especially loved the change Beth made between Silas and his 2 courtesans - Comfort and Vice. I loved Vice in the 1st edition, but was unsure if we could trust Comfort. With how their characters and the relationship between all 3 have been reworked, I adored both Comfort and Vice in this edition.
The storyline of Phantom feels unique in all the best ways, and I’m dying to see what happens next in Pain (Book 2) after that cliffhanger!
Thank you so much to Beth Ball and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the gifted copy! 🗡️💚✨
Assassin politics, fae secrets, and a dangerously compelling partnership, Phantom delivers everything I love in epic romantic fantasy.
Beth Ball opens this series with a rich and layered world where political intrigue, hidden identities, and ancient magic collide. At the center of it all are two characters who are just as sharp as the blades they carry.
Lord Silas Graveston lives a double life: nobleman by day, assassin by night. His careful balance begins to unravel when a mysterious fae woman wearing a stolen enchanted necklace appears in court. Natalya Slipshayde is hiding more than a few secrets of her own, and revenge is at the top of her list.
What begins as a clash of motives quickly evolves into something far more complicated.
Silas and Natalya are both wonderfully complex characters. Silas walks the line between duty and rebellion, while Natalya brings a fierce determination and sharp wit that make her impossible to ignore. Their dynamic is filled with tension, banter, and reluctant trust that slowly builds into something deeper.
One of the strongest aspects of Phantom is the intrigue-filled worldbuilding. Court politics simmer beneath every conversation, alliances shift constantly, and the looming mystery of a missing fae heir adds another layer of urgency to the story.
The slow-burn romance works beautifully within the larger fantasy plot, never overshadowing the stakes of the story but instead enhancing the emotional weight of the characters’ choices.
With morally gray characters, courtly intrigue, secret identities, and found family dynamics, Phantom is a fantastic start to what promises to be an epic series.
If you love fantasy stories that combine politics, magic, and complex character relationships, this one is absolutely worth adding to your TBR.
Going into this, I already knew I love Beth Ball’s writing style, and that definitely held true here. She has this talent for creating lush, extensive fantasy worlds that feel like they existed long before page one. The atmosphere is rich, the writing is layered, and every character feels like they’re hiding something just beneath the surface.
That said, this book really throws you straight into the deep end. There’s no hand-holding, no gentle introduction to the world or politics, so it took me a while to find my footing. At times I was completely immersed, and at other times I was trying to piece together who was plotting what and why.
The characters and romance are very much on the darker, morally gray side. The tension is strong, the dynamic is complex, and not always comfortable, which will definitely work for some readers more than others. I was intrigued and invested, but also a little held at a distance at times because of that complexity.
What kept me hooked though was the atmosphere and that constant sense of underlying tension. Even when I struggled, I was never bored, and I always wanted to know what would happen next.
Overall, this is a dark, intricate romantasy that really depends on your taste. If you love complex worlds and messy, morally gray characters, this one will absolutely be for you!!
“All our experiences shape us, Natalya. Loss more than any other. It speaks through absence, just as the sheered side of a tree tells of a fallen companion. We need only learn to read what isn’t there.”
MY REVIEW
This book was definitely an epic fantasy romance book with so many twists and turns from a political intrigue standpoint. The multiple POVs give insight into the various characters thoughts, feelings, and motives though not every major plot character gets a POV.
I enjoyed the dynamic between Natalya and Silas as it grew and changed throughout the book and how their romance changed from the initial fake courting idea. The slow burn between these characters was so fun to read about.
It was clear that the lore around Lilith, Vengeance and Eamon play a crucial part in the entirety of the story though we are left with more questions than answers at the end of this first book.
I would recommend the book to people who are looking for a book that is heavy on political intrigue but also has some beautiful courtship moments.
Thank you to Beth Ball and Hidden Hollows Book Tours for gifting me an ARC of this book.
The amount of work Beth Ball put into this expansion needs to be studied. She has been working NONSTOP on so many stories, her brain is a labyrinth.
Phantom has multiple POVs but focuses mainly on Silas. I enjoyed seeing this world from his point of view. While the Suzerain and courtesan culture of the world was a little off-putting, learning more about Silas and his level of love and care for his courtesans did make me feel better. I love how he gave them power through choice and they each had their own roles in the family. Not going to lie, I’d love a sister wife to share the load with but I don’t want to share my spouse 🤣
I did love learning about the political intrigue of the court. There’s something nefarious happening and, just when you think you have it figured out, no you don’t. I also really enjoyed the role of magic and prophecy in this story. It wasn’t totally focused on the magic or the prophecy, but brought it up just enough to be a reminder.
I love the side characters as well! While the book is focused on Silas and Natalya’s story, I really enjoyed Greer, Vice, Athas, and Mathias. I’d love to know how they came to be in Silas’s household.
Beth Ball has such a beautiful writing style that keeps me invested. Her world building is descriptive and grows as the story progresses. I’m eager to see what happens to Natalya and Silas after that ending!!
I have read Beth's books a couple of times now. She always write such such worlds and dynamic characters, and Phantom was no different. Beth also does a great job and making sure that even the side characters have well developed arcs. The story is told through multiple POV's, focusing on Natalya, Silas and Guinevere. I loves watching their stories unfold and seeing them come together. Natalya is a trained assassin and can call knives at will. I love that no matter what she always tried to fight back. Silas is very nurturing and gentle with his women, but he has no problem getting his hands dirty. He has such a different dynamic with each if his courteseans and truly just wanted them to be happy and taken care of.
I also enjoyed the side characters especially Comfort and Vice. Their relationship with one another was so sweet and nurturing and you could feel the love that they had for each other.
Oh man, Lord Oxbrow. That man was something else. He was conniving and jealous. He had no idea how to treat people properly. He took his rivalry with Silas to the extreme and then whine and lie when things did not go his way.
Thank you to Beth and Hidden Hollow for sending me a digital copy
Beth Ball never ceases to amaze me and here she has done it again with her second edition of Phantom! I never had the pleasure of the first edition but this one is definitely the writing style I love from Beth Ball!
The intricate world-building, court politics and intrigue, slow burn and witty banter kept me wanting to read JUST one more chapter all the way to the end!
Silas and Natalya make quite the team once they warm up to each other and realize they have common enemy. The slow burn is the best kind.
I also absolutely fell in love with some of our side characters as well! Comfort and Vice are such a pair and Vice had me wanting to bring her home as my new bestie!
This is currently my favorite Beth Ball book and every book I’ve read so far has been a 5 star read! If you love immersive world building, found family, slow burn, a morally gray MMC and a stabby FMC, with absolutely loveable side characters and witty banter then you definitely don’t want to miss this latest release by Beth Ball!
Thank you to the author for the copy in advance of release! This voluntary review contains opinions that are my own.
I read PHANTOM by Beth Ball for a tour hosted by the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours. Thank you to both for inviting me along and for the gifted e-arc. I am so glad I was on this tour!
I love stories that have lots of descriptions and character backstory. This has that. I also like multiple POV. The tropes are some of my favorite. That all works together for one great read.
Silas and Natalya each have their own secrets. He tries to rescue her from the man who holds her captive. She doesn't know if she can trust him. All she wants, after all, is revenge on those who have taken so much from her. Both are surprised when their plans take an unexpected turn.
I was drawn in immediately and held till the very end. The secrets, the action, the twists and turns, the romance, and the magical elements create a story that kept me up way too late.
The ending. I'm so glad we have less than a month to wait for book 2! I can't wait to see where this story goes next.
I highly recommend PHANTOM, and it is available now.
This is Book 1 in the Heir of Lillith Series and follows 3 POVs: Silas, Guinevere and the Heir herself Natalya.
The cover artwork is striking and really sets the scene for the entire, with Natalya and Silar front and central.
This is a long book but it is full or world building and plenty of contextual information that you need to build an entire picture of this universe and how it works... and mainly, why being the Heir of Lillith is deemed such a bad thing.
The charcters that offer their POV are an intriguing bunch. Natalya is fierce and determined, having had na entirely different lifestyles to her Sister who wanted to be a Courtesan, Silas who is basically aristocracy and is hiding Assassin secrets of his own and Guinevere... the strong priestess who owes her life to the one person all seek.
This was a very different kind of fantasy romance to what I have read in the past but this made it even better as it really pulled you im and kept you reading.
I honestly can't wait for Book 2 and to see what happens next!
Wow, I thought the first version of Phantom was good, but this was epic! The details that have been added elevated the book so much. The world building was even more detailed, the writing lyrical, the relationships deeper and fresher, and the romance was romancing!
Beth managed to evoke even bigger emotions this time as well. I laughed, was deeply angered, swooned over a few scenes, and even cried. If that's not the mark of a good book I don't know what is!
I loved the relationship even more between Natalya and Silas. There was just this extra layer that has me rooting so hard for them! I would be remiss not to mention Vice and Comfort, too. They are such fun characters and their revamp made my heart happy!
I could go on forever, but I don't have the space. Overall, if you want deep, twisty courtly intrigue, swoony romance, deep world building, and an adventurous good time, then read this book! Thanks Beth for the wonderful escape!!!
This was an addicting slow-burn mid-spice level romantasy. I loved Silas and Natalya so much, and watching them shift from enemies to lovers was a slow but fun ride. Silas lives a double life, and in a way so does Natalya. I love that they both desire revenge, for their own reasons. The world they live in is rich, and the characters are unique. Ball’s descriptions really transport you into this world she’s created, where even within the same kingdom, people vary greatly. While the steamy moments have more tame descriptions, they fit in well with the story. The courtly intrigue added another layer, and will keep you just as hooked as the romance side of the plot. Everything moves along at a good pace, and while this isn’t the shortest book, you’ll find yourself flying through it.
This complex story weaves together spies, assassins, courtesans, magic, prophecies, and royal intrigue. This is the 2nd edition, and this story has been enhanced, so much more depth in the storytelling with characters and plot.
The premise is refreshingly unique. Silas, the main character, has two courtesans living with him when Natalya unexpectedly joins his "family."
The dynamic between Natalya and Silas is captivating, their slow-burn romance ignites into passion. Their relationship evolves into what I feel as a true partnership with deep intimacy, setting it apart from his connections with the other courtesans.
I thoroughly enjoyed Phantom; however, it ends with with a bit of a cliffhanger and it will continue into book two.
Thank you HHBT and Beth Ball for the gifted ebook. This does not affect my honest review and all words are my own.
This felt like the perfect blend between epic fantasy and romance. We get an incredible plot line with in-depth world building but it doesn’t take away from the progression of the romance. Beth Ball did a great job writing a story that was equal parts and one couldn’t live without the other.
Silas and Natalya were super fun MCs as both were assassins, though Silas was also living this double life at court. You get to see both gentle and ruthless sides of him and of course he was gentle for her
You’ll also find one of my favorite tropes in this book, found family, and it’ll have all the feelings coming out!
I do really like the few books I've read by Beth Ball! and this one was just as good as the other!
Silas really has all he could want with the courtesans he has and gains even more with Natalya by his side. he cared for all the girls and did not hide his empathy and I loved that. Natalya was such a bad**s. I love how she could take care of herself and act as a partner to Silas but did not have too much of a need for help. Vice and Comfort were adorable and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow between each other and Silas and Natalya. They're such a nice little family! The end though does make me wanna read more because even with all the political intrigue and clashing of events there's still more yet to come and I wanna see what more will come of Natalya.
I really enjoyed Phantom. The setting felt like stepping in to my favourite fantasy game and the storyline was familiar while having plenty to make it stand out from other romantasies.
Lost heirs, assassins, conspiracy, prophecy, court intrigued and thieves guilds!! What isnt to love?
Phantom and Natalya have instant chemistry, the slow burn is just the right amount. There is no miscommunication trope 👏👏👏
I've bought my shelf trophy and cant wait for book 2: Pain.
* I was gifted the ebook to read and review and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Phantom by Beth Ball is a richly created epic Romantasy full of lavish descriptions and characters that are created with a dimension to them that bring them off the page. Natalya our MFC is strong and feisty and her pairing with Silas works really well. The villains in this novel are created equally as well, they really bring the storyline together. The progression is steady and we learn a lot along the way. The tropes that are touched upon throughout the novel are some of my favourites. I really enjoyed the developments and the direction this novel went in, I felt I was on an epic journey.
