Howl if You're Guilty

Rate this book
Michelle came to her estranged grandfather’s wake prepared for weird family vibes.

She did not plan
– the ballroom blackout
– the scream
– and the Alpha face-down on the stairs

Now the mansion’s locked, the Inner Circle is panicking politely, and the Guardian wolves are on their way.

Which would be fine…
except Michelle’s the half-human outsider who can’t shift, can’t see in the dark, and apparently has no sense of self-preservation.

But she noticed something the full-bloods missed — and the estate’s grumpy grounds manager seems determined not to let her face this circus alone.

There’s a killer in the house.
There’s a clue in the dark.
And Michelle refuses to be the easy suspect.

✨ Perfect for readers who
– Cozy-chaos locked-door mysteries
– “I don’t fit in but watch me anyway” heroines
– Grumpy-steady guys who quietly stand guard

This story had a good base, with principled main characters that had clear motivations, and an intriguing mystery plot. The romance piece faltered for me in its execution however and depended too heavily on the physical attraction (leading to rushed intimacy) between the H and h. They had the ingredients for excellent romantic development too given their sincere interest in each other and the genuine admiration both held for the other. The mystery also somehow moved slowly and yet on a tight timeline. Some of the reveals and investigation were highly engaging, but then the ultimate villain reveal fell flat for me from an observational standpoint. This left me with mixed emotions about the story, but still enjoying chunks of it.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both were experienced, but celibate for a while with no recent relationships and with neither liking casual hook-ups.

Some tropes/themes:
☆ Twists
☆ Hybrid FMC x Wolf shifter MMC
☆ Estranged family
☆ Toxic pack dynamics and bigotry
☆ Secret invitation
☆ Mystery to solve
☆ Murder
☆ Insta-lust
☆ Extra touch of paranormal
☆ Independent FMC
☆ Kind MMC
☆ Clues

The story opens with Michelle (h) feeling stuck and uncertain of where to go professionally. She has an unfulfilling job and lives at home with her dad. An invitation to the funeral of her estranged grandfather sparks her curiosity and love of puzzles, so she travels to the event only to find an attractive groundskeeper and a much greater mystery than expected. For his part, Grayson (H) is instantly drawn to Michelle and quickly establishes a friendly connection, with a side of chemistry. Given his knowledge of her grandfather’s estate and pack, as well as being a caring guy who wants his own answers, Grayson is perfectly situated to help in Michelle’s search - uncovering loads of secrets and a murderer.

The investigation and plot go on quite the journey and I can’t really hint at anything without spoilers. Michelle and Grayson were interesting characters. Sometimes Michelle came across as slightly one dimensional with her love of solving mysteries and the feelings about the estrangement. There’s some nice emotional growth that occurs as the story unfolds though. Grayson’s backstory was far more traumatic and his reactions to some of what happened also felt more realistic and grounded.

The romance isn’t quite backseat to the investigation, but at times it felt sort of like it was only because it was so easy. Michelle and Grayson share their vulnerabilities easily and fall into bed right away, despite it being abnormal for both, and after events that don’t exactly spark lustfulness. There’s another spicy scene later that also seemed out of place. Both are explained by hormones, adrenaline, etc. I thought this would have worked better as a true slow burn with their establishment of camaraderie and then the romantic elements coming more to the forefront. The mains are also not an established couple until very late, despite being in each other’s pockets the entire time, because they simply don’t have a conversation about what’s between them (besides sex). The resolution to that is a fast, barely-there talk with more sex. They’re on page together for the majority of the book I’d say, with good emotional intimacy established, and I just found myself wanting more from the relationship somehow.

The rest of the cast of characters is fairly large because the story almost entirely takes place on Michelle’s grandfather’s estate with his pack’s Inner Circle and the estate’s employees everywhere. There are a slew of suspects with possible motives and some unusual ways that Michelle uncovers information. Grayson’s younger brother was a standout supporting character with how he highlighted what Grayson had to lose and his adorable dialogue. Another side character was suspicious at first and then turned into quite the ally, which I liked.

Because of the twists and reveals, the book has several surprises. The climax was appropriately dramatic and again, sort of easy in its resolution. The end of the book was good in that it has satisfying closure for the plot and a HEA for the romance, including an extra unexpected piece of closure that was actually very sweet. But parts of it were lackluster with a time jump forward that glossed over some of the personal aspects of what had happened since the climax. There was also a delay in something that is explained away but didn’t make sense to me.

Writing-wise, the note at the end of the story mentioned that this pen name was a team of writer friends. Maybe that’s why some pieces stood out so well to me and others didn’t? I don’t know. Some of the writing was also repetitive, which can occur more with co-writers. I’m not mad I read this, I don’t know if I’d read more by this author.

This book left me smiling. The mystery was a little all over the place but everything made sense. I wasn't upset about any of the outcomes and I didn't feel like I had to go back at any point to make sure that things lined up or that I didn't miss anything(although on going back there are tiny clues sprinkled in if you know what you’re looking for which is neat). I was super invested in the action and romance. Their relationship was super sweet and the action/suspense kept me on my toes. I'm happy that it felt like all the characters got what they deserved.

That being said, BEFORE YOU BUY, there are some problems with the summary(JUST the summary)- she’s not half human(she’s a hybrid full shifter), the main ml is not grumpy(he’s mellow and upbeat), and after the first night the mansion isn’t locked and the guardian wolves play an extremely tiny part. Which kind’ve makes the book better because it’s about how Michelle and Grayson work as a team to solve the mystery.

Highlights for me
•Strong Female lead
•Supportive non-grumpy male lead without it being diminishing to his character
•Fun mystery
•Thrilling action sequences
•Two-person narration
•Satisfying ending
•Spicy scenes

Michelle is smart but not insufferable and as a millennial she's easy to relate to. I like how excited she gets about the mystery and when things get spicy. I like that Grayson’s personality complements hers(and her personality complements his). They are super cute with each other from the moment they meet. It’s lovely watching how they care for each other.

My biggest gripe is that at the beginning, some of the descriptions were long winded but it gets better throughout the book. Oh, and I wish the chapter where the bonding/marking scene happened was a little more smooth.

I enjoyed this book very much! It was a great mix of a paranormal shifter romance and a murder mystery. Both aspects were built upon, and I had a great time following the investigation and growing relationship between the two main characters.
Michelle was a shifter without an animal. Her parents weren't from the same shifter species, so they knew that her odds of having one were like a billion to one. She was working multiple jobs to be independent. Her father wasn't the same happy man after her mom died in a car accident a few years back, but they were doing their best to keep living. When Michelle got a letter with an invitation to the funeral of her estranged grandfather, she had to see why, after he banished her mother for falling in love with a shifter of a different species, the old man wanted his granddaughter to be at his funeral.
Grayson, the head groundskeeper of Michelle's grandfather's estate, wasn't a part of his pack, but the old man saved his and his little brother's lives. They were deeply indebted to Arthur Vermont, even though it was his pack that killed their own. Ten years later, Grayson was still treated like an outsider by the leadership of the pack, but he didn't mind it; they were all assholes anyway. When he met Michelle, he fell fast and hard, and when she was in danger, he would kill everyone to save her.
I liked the mystery; I suspected who did it pretty early on, but it was still good. The relationship between Michelle and Grayson was very carnal, but I didn't mind it. They were shifters, so the instinct was driving them harder than it would a normal human. I loved Josiah and Jefferson.

Howl if you’re Guilty is a charming little mashup of shifter shenanigans that turns into a murder mystery for half shifter/human Michelle when she receives a letter requesting her presence at her grandfather’s funeral a man she hasn’t had any contact with since birth. With a caveat stating his reason for having her attend could not be revealed in the letter, her curiosity is peaked and with the travel expenses paid for she decides to attend.
Mystery lover Michelle doesn’t know it yet but she has a whole lot of surprises awaiting her during this journey down the family tree road, and one of those surprises upon arrival at the estate is head groundskeeper Grayson Williams…ooh la la!
Next up…murder!
Enjoyed the story which held humor, intrigue, family dynamics, suspense, magic, spice, and a mystery that resilient, tenacious MFC Michelle is more than capable of solving with a little help from her new friend MMC Grayson.
The writing was engaging, and dual POV with characters who were well crafted and entertained within a perfectly paced wonderful read! HEA.

Okay this one was such a vibe 😄🐺

If you’re in the mood for something cozy, a little chaotic, and full of “did that really just happen?” moments, this book absolutely delivers. Howl If You Are Guilty feels like being wrapped in a blanket… while also side-eyeing every character like “hmm, you’re suspicious 👀.”

The humour really caught me off guard in the best way — it’s playful, a bit unhinged at times, and perfectly balanced with those softer, comforting moments that make you want to slow down and just enjoy the ride. I genuinely laughed out loud in places (which is rare for me with books!) and also found myself oddly invested in the mystery and the characters’ questionable life choices.

The characters are messy, dramatic, and honestly? Very relatable. You’ll probably find yourself picking favourites while also suspecting literally everyone — including the ones you want to trust. It’s that kind of story.
Overall, it’s a fun, cozy read with just enough intrigue to keep you hooked without feeling heavy. Perfect for a chill evening, a cup of tea, and a “just one more chapter” that turns into five.

Would I recommend? Absolutely.
Just… don’t trust anyone too quickly 😉

I just happened to come across this book when I finished another on my kindle app and seen it in the kindle unlimited row! It was the cover that had me looking haha.

Anyway I’m so glad I picked it as I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it’s a paranormal murder mystery with romance. I enjoyed the character growth from the MFC Michelle, she only needed a little support from the lovely Grayson & she was unstoppable. And as for Grayson the MMC well he was just wonderful, always keeping an eye out for his younger brother while following his feelings for Michelle. Very much a protector but one who is considerate of how others feel.
I also liked that all the side characters had very different personalities & don’t over shadow the MC’s.
Lots of twist & turns , trying to guess who did it while also seeing Grayson & Michelle’s instant connection blossom, i also liked how even though there was an instant connection it wasn’t over the top like some other books can be!
It was a 4.5 rating for me but rounded it up to a 5 , thoroughly enjoyed & would definitely recommend:)

Werewolf whodunit

Michelle is a half breed wolf/bear, but is technically human without an inner shifter.
Grayson is an outcast, a shifter not accepted by the pack.

So many twists and turns, moments where you think you’ve found the killer, then … nope…. think again.

Grayson and Michelle together were amazing. I loved seeing them come together build something out of a horrible situation. I loved how Michelle found her power, a connection to her grandfather and a new connection to the pack.

The Inner Circle - if a writer is going to give you a group of characters to loathe, you’ll want it to be this lot. They are irredeemable, extremely unlikable, and an absolute mess.

I liked the ending, and even though it’s listed as a standalone, this could be a great start to a series.

I think this falls somewhere between a cozy mystery and heavy mystery. There were a few times my stomach was... not roiling, but my anxiety kicked in a bit. I don't consider that bad by the way, I think it's good that the writing had me anxious for the character despite the rational voice in the back of my head saying that it would all work out fine.

I also liked the balance between we as the audience having clues and inklings about certain matters, and the characters not having the same suspicions or predictions, but without you wanting to smack the heel of your head and wonder if the characters are just stupid.

This is a very good book, I recommend it without reservation, just make sure to check the trigger warnings and note that this is open door/explicit.

I loved this book so much! I haven't read a mystery book in quite a while and this was the perfect read to get me back into the genre. Murder mystery with locked-door whodunit theme, secret identity, found family, power struggles, intrigue, and an unexpected romance. I kinda want more from this world because it was so good and has intriguing shifter dynamics outside the norm. Plus I want either a sequel continuing from where it left off or even a prequel of the early days of Arthur's reign as Alpha, both during the dark days and when he finally morphed into a better man. But this as a standalone is still top tier!! 🩶🫶🏽.

I really enjoyed Michelle and Grayson's story. It's a murder mystery with romance splashed it. Nothing is as it seems in the beginning, and that really grabbed my attention and kept me entertained to the end. I suspected who the murderer was a about halfway through, and I was right!!I liked the mysterious elements and clues that Michelle and Grayson had to decipher. They grew closer and closer as the story went on which was sweet to read. Another part that heartwarming was how Michelle's opinion of her grandfather had change as the plot progressed as she learned how much he changed over the years. Hindsight can do that. Overall, this was a great read I'd highly recommend.

I'd recommend this if you are in the mood for a spicy mystery story that takes place in a mansion, involves shifters, and reminds me of Clue.

Overall, I rate it 3.75⭐out of 5 based on the following: 🤩Enjoyment - 3.5; 👥Characters - 4; 📖Plot - 3.5; 🗺️Atmosphere - 3;.5 and🖋️Writing - 4 with the first 3 categories being most important.

What worked for me:
• Grayson's dedication to taking care of his nephew and how he supported Michelle
• Michelle realizing her inner strength and taking risks for the good of the pack

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book through BookSprout; however, all opinions are my own.

twists and turns from your usual shifter books

HEA
Shifter
Violence
Not too many triggers
2/5 spice

This isn’t a super spicy book but I love the story line. It’s so different from other shifter books I’ve read and created a great story line. It doesn’t rely on spice to make things interesting. There are some odd spots in the book where there might’ve been something edited out and it suddenly jumps to an idea not previously mentioned but as the reader you know what they’re talking about still.

Howl if your Guilty

Michelle received an invitation to her moms, fathers funeral. Intrigued because she loves a good mystery but also because she'd never met the man! Upon arriving at the manor she's really surprised to find its not he's funeral but his birthday. Until it wasnt!
With the help of clues left by her grandfather she finds out all about him, the inner circle and herself with some very surprising outcomes.

Brilliant read, loved it
Off to download another of Devins titles now it was that easy flowing, Hot n sexy n very naughty in places

Mystery, romance and action

Michelle is stuck in a dead end job, living with her widowed dad and wondering where her life was bound. When she gets a letter from her estranged grandfather inviting her to his wolf pack's estate she throws caution to the wind and visits him. What awaits her is bizarre, unexpected and mysterious. When she meets head grounds keeper Grayson and her world tilts. And the hits just keep coming, both mentally and physically. This story does an excellent job of keeping you invested, guessing and hoping for the best.

Loved this, a kinda murder, mystery, where all are in lockdown as the shifter guards have the job of finding out who did it. Around this is Michelle, half human and lacks the night sight and a need to keep safe. Grayson is the grumpy property keeper, who manages to keep Michelle out of trouble.
I wasn't sure what I'd feel with this but did really enjoy the dynamic of the characters.

I really enjoyed reading Howl if You're Guilty. Michelle is a fun character, and I appreciated how competent she was as a sleuth. Grayson was a perfect match for her, and I loved their chemistry. The mystery was really well written. It's one of the few I've read in a while that actually managed to surprise me sometimes. If you enjoy shifter cozy mysteries with spice, I highly recommend this one.

This is a wonderfully well written story that I loved everything about it! I love Darius's protective nature towards Michelle, that says a lot about him. part of that is him being Alpha and another is feelings he will not admit to himself. This story was a great surprise, and I Loved It!!! I Highly Recommend!! No Spoilers!.

good

I thought this book wasn’t too bad. The FMC and the MMC seemed to jump into bed with each other pretty quickly though. I did like the mystery behind the FMC‘s grandfather‘s murder. Especially since the mail that she received told her to come out there because he was dead and then she gets out there and finds out that he’s not dead. There’s definitely a lot of twists and turns in this book before the murder is solved, which makes it fun.

4.5🌟

I really loved this! Such a unique story and GREAT world building for a standalone! The writing was super solid and the only reason I’m giving it 4.5 instead of 5 is because I really feel like it needed to be split into two books. Or maybe that’s just because I wanted to stay in this story longer😅 but the ending felt a bit rushed to me, I would’ve loved to have more time with the characters and their stories. Overall, definitely a great book and I’m sure I’ll be rereading it!

Action, suspense, romance…and a dead guy. This was really good. I loved the mystery of this and the position that Michelle was put in. Bend in a room full of shifters when she isn’t able to shift. Things aren’t looking so great. So went detective on everyone. I had the best time with this story. It was fun, sweet. Loved the banter and the characters.

Entertaining!

The depth of the characters was well done. Even though we get to know one of them posthumously.
The story is engaging with just the right addition of a surprise, or unexpected twist to keep things moving forward.
I enjoyed it.

Note: It is definitely recommended for adults!
