Between The Lines is an enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity romance where a smart-mouthed, runaway bride and a by-the-book cop discover that some rules are meant to be broken - even if the stakes are high.

He didn't smile. He never did. Not even a twitch of those stern lips. Mueller was like one of those Buckingham Palace guards - I could probably dance naked in front of him and he'd maintain that stony expression.
Actually, that might be worth trying someday. Just for fun.

This is the first installment in The Redliner Series, however this book can be read as a standalone.
Natalie Halloran was born and raised in Minnesota, the frozen tundra she still calls home with her husband, two energetic boys, and their spunky dog, Toby. By day, she works in Supply Chain, traversing the world of spreadsheets and budgets, but at night, her pen takes to paper, letting her creativity and passion flow. Writing gives her a way to capture the chaos, humor, and spice that life has to offer, even if only in fictional characters.
When she’s not writing or preparing the 12th snack of the day for her children, Natalie can be found with a cup of coffee in hand, a book nearby, and her phone full of funny videos she swears she’ll stop sending to her friends (she won’t). She hopes her stories bring readers a small sliver of joy and act as a reminder that even in the chaos of life, there’s always something worth turning the page for.
This was a bit outside my usual reading lane, and it definitely felt like a shift for me. While it’s presented as enemies-to-lovers, I experienced it more as a story about two very different people learning how to coexist. The focus leans heavily on their relationship dynamic rather than external stakes, which made it feel more character-driven than plot-driven. As someone who lives in darker fantasy worlds, this ended up being a bit of a palette cleanser.
That said, I did struggle at times with the character dynamics, especially early on. The heroine’s behavior was difficult for me to connect with, and I tend to gravitate toward romances built on a clearer sense of mutual respect and understanding. Still, I can see how readers who enjoy messy, personality-driven relationships and emotional growth arcs would appreciate the book. I just wish the threat that was created at the beginning of the story would be carried through out of the book instead of just appearing in the last few chapters. It wasn’t quite my personal taste, though I’m glad I stepped outside my usual genre and gave it a try.
I started this debut novel with high hopes as it contains my favorite tropes of romantic suspense, slow burn, and grumpy MMC...and boy did it exceed my expectations!
Lucy and Nate are real and raw. Their chemistry explodes off the page with an emotional depth many authors fail to capture. Suspense is gently woven throughout that kept me hooked while the loveable German Shepherd and witty banter had me laughing and kicking my feet.
The writing is spectacular. Vivid imagery and impressive attention to detail allowed me to connect with these characters and feel like I was in their heads.
Thorough and deep in its entirety this debut novel made me forget I was reading.
4.5 ✨️ I loved this book. I absolutely could not put it down and it always had my attention. I truly can't wait to read the rest of the series as it releases.
Tropes: Forced Proximity, Grumpy x Sunshine, Enemies-to-Lovers, Runaway Bride, Officer/Protector, He Falls First (eventually!). _____________________________________________________ "I’d rather build a new life from nothing than live one more day in a designer cage."
I inhaled this book! If you love a heroine who rides a motorcycle like a pro and a grumpy, rule-following police officer who secretly has a heart of gold (and a tragic backstory), this is for you.
Lucy Martin has been hiding in the small town of Chesterfield for a year, escaping an abusive arranged marriage to a powerful crime boss in New York. She’s built a quiet life working testing motorcycle gear , until a plumbing disaster destroys her home. Enter Officer Nate Mueller, the uptight cop who has pulled her over five times but offers her his spare room because she has nowhere else to go. _____________________________________________________
What I Loved:
- The Chemistry: The "Grumpy vs. Chaos" dynamic is top-tier here. Nate creates order to manage his PTSD , while Lucy brings chaos (sometimes intentionally, just to annoy him). -The Banter: Their verbal sparring is excellent. Lucy refuses to be intimidated by his badge, and Nate is equal parts annoyed and fascinated by her. -The Spice: It takes a while to get there (slow burn tension!), but when the dam breaks... phew. The scene in the garage involving handcuffs and a motorcycle?. Unforgettable. -Clara & Henry: Clara, the 90-year-old neighbor, steals every scene she is in. Her "themed" dinner parties for watching reality TV had me laughing out loud. And Henry, Nate's loyal German Shepherd, is the best dog. -The Suspense: The looming threat of Lucy’s past finding her keeps the pacing tight. When the villain (Bruno) finally catches up to her at a masquerade ball, the shift from romance to high-stakes thriller is intense. I loved that Lucy isn't just a damsel in distress; she uses the skills Nate taught her to fight back. -The Verdict: Between The Lines balances humor, heat, and heavy topics (trauma, abuse) really well. It’s a story about finding safety in another person when you've spent your life running. _____________________________________________________

In Between the Lines by Natalie Halloran is a beautifully written, emotionally resonant story that relies on subtlety and quiet moments to leave a lasting impact. The writing is lyrical and intentional, and the characters feel authentic and deeply human. The emotional pacing is handled well overall, allowing the story to unfold naturally and giving the reader time to connect.
At times, I found myself wanting just a bit more depth in certain moments—either through extended emotional reflection or additional insight into the characters’ inner thoughts—but this never detracted from the overall experience. The story’s strength lies in what’s left unsaid, and that restraint is part of its charm.
A thoughtful, heartfelt read that will resonate with readers who appreciate emotionally driven stories and beautiful prose.
Between the Lines completely hooked me from the first chapter. Lucy's story hit hard a woman literally running from a life that wasn't hers, trying to rebuild herself from scratch. What I loved most is that she's not just hiding, she's living making friends, finding work, finally breathing. And then Nate walks in and turns everything upside down in the best way. The enemies-to-lovers tension is chef's kiss. Nate is so delightfully uptight and Lucy is chaos in human form, and watching them orbit each other was so entertaining. The forced proximity really delivers. By the end I was fully invested in both of them. A fun, emotional, and swoony read. Can't wait for the next book in the Redliner Series! 🖤
Who doesn't loved an opposites attract, forced proximity romance?
Lucy is a sassy, independent, motorcycle riding woman who does not take crap from anyone, and Nate is the uptight, rule following, orderly cop who likes everything a certain way. Watching them clash, circle each other, and slowly build that tension was so good. The banter? Epic.
And can we talk about Henry the dog for a second. I would read an entire book just from his POV honestly.
Also Clara. The outspoken pseudo grandma absolutely stole scenes for me. I loved her so much and she brought the perfect mix of humor and heart.
This book had romance, tension, action, and emotional backstory all working together perfectly. I cannot wait for book 2.
This book was so good! I love seeing a sporty/daredevil FMC who kept that fire even after her trauma. This book is the definition of a slow burn and the tension between the 2 MCs builds with every page. When they finally collide the spice is more cracked door but feels right for this story. I loved the banter between the 2 and how the FMC pushed the MMC's buttons. I applaud the author on the quality of her debut book and am excited to read the next 2 in the series!
I received this as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
This book was so good! I read the whole thing in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Lucy is on the run and starts fresh with a whole new life. But, how long can someone run before their past catches up to them? The relationship between Lucy and Nate is top tier and the forced proximity was written perfectly! I sincerely loved this book, loved the mature romance and spicy scenes, and left me feeling all warm and fuzzy when I was done!
Loved it, the banter between Lucy and Nate was on point! Lucy is a strong sassy woman who has been through so much and finally learnt to trust again. Nate is a control freak and learns that a little bit of chaos is ok sometimes. The Steve Irwin reference was the icing on the cake Couldn’t put it down
Where to even start? If you like a forced proximity romance, this one’s for you! A cop & a woman that loves to speed. What more could you ask for? The banter was bantering. There was even an adorable dog that made the story that much cuter. Oh and there’s action, suspense, and just a whole lot of fun. I am ready for book 2!!!
“Between the Lines” captivated me from the very first page. This debut novel is a beautifully written romance filled with emotional depth, vulnerability and palpable tension. The chemistry between the characters is both compelling and delightfully spicy, keeping me fully invested throughout. I’m already looking forward to Natalie Halloran’s next novel!
A spicy little romance between the least likely of companions. So incredibly well written and it kept me wondering what would happen next. I couldn’t put the book down and the characters felt so relatable. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!!!!!
I absolutely loved this book! I love a grumpy man and I'm going to need Fan Art ASAP! The sense of humor was perfect. Can I just say how obsessed I am with Clara?! This a must!!! I can't wait for the next book!
I absolutely LOOOOVVVEEEDDD! It had be sucked in from the beginning. I finished it in one sitting because I couldn’t not know what happened! The characters felt like family and when I finished, I was in such a slump because I genuinely did not want it to end!! :)
This is a great story with a snarky MFC and a grumpy MMC. Lucy comes into Nate’s life like a tornado. Just upheaving his OCD life to hell and back. It is funny and exciting and an easy read.
This book was so good! I loved watching Lucy and Nate get to know each other and found myself smiling and laughing along the way. Can’t wait for the next book!
