"Sunshine is the best disinfectant." U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis
A legal thriller at the confluence of law, banking, and cybercrime.
In a world where power no longer lies in armies or arsenals, but in algorithms and access, the next great war will be fought across digital frontiers.
When BostonFirst Bank implodes in a mysterious cyberattack, the financial aftershocks threaten to upend the global economy. The evidence leads to Helvex Financial, a Swiss banking giant—yet deeper still to Zhonghua Capital, a covert Chinese state holding company intent on reshaping the world’s financial order.
Enter LawForce, a task force of elite lawyers with full U.S. governmental support created to defend justice where traditional systems fail. At its helm stands Steve Shane, a lawyer driven by conscience, and Jonathan Hendrix, the U.S. Attorney General, whose vision for LawForce blurs the line between legality and warfare.
From Zurich war rooms to Washington boardrooms, from the shadowed servers of Helvex Financial to the mountain passes of Switzerland, The Cyber Sanction hurtles toward a reckoning where truth, technology, and justice collide.
Blending the tension of a legal thriller with the precision of a geopolitical espionage novel, The Cyber Sanction is a searing exploration of digital warfare, accountability, and the moral cost of justice in an interconnected cyber world.
The Cyber Sanction—where justice goes global, and every byte can kill.
Nick is a retired lawyer and engineer. He splits his time between Calgary, Canada; Wengen, Switzerland; and Maui, USA.
He can usually be found writing on a laptop somewhere, skiing down a piste, hiking up a mountain, or rafting down a river in canyon country.
He is convinced that if people read more, the world would be a better place. It doesn't always have to be heavy. Read something that will stretch your mind, then enjoy a beach read. Rinse and repeat.
The Cyber Sanction is a fast paced legal thriller. This is the second story involving LawForce, a group put together to redress the power balance in high stakes court room situations.
The story revolves around a Boston based family owned bank which recently partnered with a Swiss firm. However, a cyber attack on the bank caused a financial collapse. This sent waves of unrest through the Western banking world.
LawForce were brought in to investigate the initial bank’s collapse, where they discovered a cyber-attack trail which lead to Swiss banking and beyond.
Much of the story takes place in Switzerland and I enjoyed this setting. There’s a lot of detail about world finance and legal systems, which at times I found hard to take in; technology growth can be hard to keep up with. The tale had plenty of twists to keep the story flowing and an ending which might gives us all pause for thought.
I was first introduced to this author with his book Bending The Arc, where I ‘met’ the LawForce team. As their name would suggest, they are involved with the law – lawyers who go above and beyond to right the wrongs of the world. In Cyber Sanction, LawForce once again is called to action when Bobbi Sullivan finds herself faced with a force far greater than she could handle alone. Someone wanted to destroy the bank she diligently worked to build and protect. This tale takes the reader from Massachusetts to Washington, DC, to Switzerland where most of this tale transpires and where LawForce set up their shop for the duration of this trial. While this is quite a long read at 487 or so pages, I think it had to be to tie up all the loose ends. The reader finds out what happens to Bobbi and her bank and all the ‘bad guys’ involved. The other thing I like about this author’s writing is that he takes a deep dive, so to speak, into cyber crime with all the ins and outs and backstories of those involved in LawForce. With a few other crimes thrown in. It is also interesting to me how LawForce actually picks the cases they choose to work on. They like to fight for the underdogs of the world, to be the heroes, to win their cases. It will be interesting to see what case they pick next because I am certain there will be a next case that needs their attention. It is also interesting to me how Hendrix, the leader of LawForce, runs interference for his team even from miles away. I like reading about the power plays that sometimes happen between the good of LawForce and the ‘bad guys’ that are involved in these tales. If you like cyber crime stories, give this series a try.
A global financial cyber crime thriller at its best. A gripping story, beautiful landscapes, an enjoyable ending. The formatting on Kindle left something to be desired visually. Strange word splits and - where there were no page wraps; part of the print.
This was an interesting cyber crime thriller. It follows MPOV so you get to see the story unfold through different angels, something I enjoy in my books.
