The Jam Sandwich Detectives by Clare Thompson

Thoughts
Been a while since I've picked up a cosy mystery and this one didn't disappoint! If you love witty, humorous, school run chaos with murder mystery, look no further! I thoroughly enjoyed this, well paced and easy to follow, I had my guesses after certain scenes but it definitely keeps you invested till the very end

Plot Summary
Rachel Walker’s life isn’t what it used to be, and joining the school’s chaotic parent WhatsApp group feels like her chance to find a new sense of purpose. But when a fellow mum is found dead after a PTA bake-off—and Rachel was the last to message the group—she suddenly finds herself at the centre of suspicion.
With gossip spreading fast, Rachel teams up with her friend Jane and a new ally, Frankie, to figure out what really happened. As they dig deeper into the tight-knit school community, they realise the truth behind the bake-off is far more dangerous than it first seemed—and uncovering it could come at a cost.

There are two things I know for absolute certain about school parent WhatsApp groups. One, someone will always reply “Thanks!” to a message that did not require a response. Two, if a murder ever happens in that social circle, the killer will absolutely expose themselves through an overly enthusiastic thumbs-up emoji at 2:13 a.m. And The Jam Sandwich Detectives by Clare Thompson leans into that exact flavor of chaotic suburban drama like it knows the group chat receipts are coming.

Rachel Walker is living in that deeply weird life phase where your identity quietly evaporates and gets replaced with “someone’s mum.” She used to have a career, a life, a sense of self. Now she has school runs, cold tea, and the quiet realization that the most socially powerful institution in her world is a Parent WhatsApp thread that can destroy reputations faster than a season finale of The Real Housewives.

So when the new term starts and Rachel gets pulled deeper into the PTA orbit, she’s already feeling a little unmoored. Then the bake-off happens. A fellow mum drops dead after the event, poisoned, which honestly feels like the natural end point of competitive parenting culture. First it's homemade cupcakes. Then it's passive aggressive fundraising emails. Eventually someone escalates to weaponized Victoria sponge.

Unfortunately for Rachel, she was the last person to message the group chat before everything went sideways. Which means the playground rumor mill kicks into high gear and suddenly she’s one suspicious emoji away from being publicly tried in the court of Mum Chat.

Enter the detective squad that absolutely should not be solving crimes but is going to do it anyway. Rachel teams up with her friend Jane and their new ally Frankie, forming the kind of slightly chaotic amateur sleuth trio that feels less like True Detective and more like Motherland accidentally wandering into a murder investigation.

Their dynamic is genuinely the best part of the story. These women are juggling parenting, insecurity, gossip, and the general exhaustion of adult life while trying to untangle who might have slipped poison into a bake-off dessert. They’re messy in the most relatable way. Nobody is dramatically kicking down doors here. They’re investigating between school pickups, awkward conversations, and the quiet realization that half the parents at the school are a little suspicious if you stare at them long enough.

And underneath the humor, there’s actually a surprisingly real thread about identity and purpose. Rachel’s struggle with feeling like she lost herself in motherhood sneaks up on you in the middle of all the gossip and sleuthing. Cozy mysteries don’t always slow down long enough to look at that emotional layer, but here it adds a little depth to the chaos. You’re rooting for her not just to solve the murder, but to reclaim some part of herself in the process.

Now the audiobook narration by Rachel Atkins deserves its own little applause moment. She absolutely understands the tone of this story. The voices feel distinct without being cartoonish, and she leans into the humor in a way that makes the school gate drama feel like you're overhearing the most entertaining gossip session of your life. The comedic timing really lands in audio form, especially during the moments where the mums are circling each other socially like very polite but extremely judgmental sharks.

That said, this is firmly a cozy mystery, which means the pacing occasionally wanders through everyday life a bit longer than the mystery technically needs. There are stretches where we’re hanging out in the world of school runs and social politics while the murder investigation gently taps the brakes. If you love the slice-of-life chaos of parenting culture, it works. If you're here purely for fast paced sleuthing, you might occasionally find yourself whispering, “Okay but also… who poisoned the cake?”

Still, the charm carries the whole thing. The humor is sharp, the playground politics are hilariously petty, and the trio of Rachel, Jane, and Frankie feels like a group of friends you’d absolutely want investigating your murder. Preferably after they’ve had a glass of wine and a good gossip.

For me this lands at a very comfortable 3.5 stars, which is the exact rating of a book that made me laugh, kept me entertained, and also convinced me that joining a PTA is statistically more dangerous than skydiving.

Whodunity Award: Most Likely to Solve a Murder Using Only Playground Gossip, Emotional Support Tea, and an Extremely Messy WhatsApp Thread

And a big thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the ALC, which I happily devoured while side-eyeing every PTA bake sale I’ve ever attended.

This was such a cute and cosy crime! As a mom I know very well that we put so much pressure on ourself to fit into that horrible click with all the PTA angels and here @clarethompsonbooks gave us a hilarious (yet serious!) Look into that world. When a PTA bake-off turns into murder - a group of moms decide to do some sleuthing of their own to find the Killer. Well Jane, Rachel and Frankie made the perfect trio and I enjoyed their investigation so much! There narration by Rachel Atkins was perfect, her voice gave the story some extra depth. This was not straight forward with many surprises and twists. I honestly was disappointed at the end - I really did not see that coming and I actually felt very sad about it. Fantastic read for the amateur sleuth in us all, would highly recommend!

This was hilariously clever with such dark humor and sarcasm, which I enjoyed most about this book. After a PTA bake off ends with a mom dead, the mystery circles whether it was due to an accidental nut allergy in one of the cakes or someone with a motive who’s had enough? The neighborhood group chat works together to solve a murder within their local moms. Filled with plenty of gossip and secrets making this the perfect book club pick or a cozy read to keep you laughing.

I loved this cosy crime novel. Well-paced, humorous read with a wicked twist. One of the school run mums is murdered, and a few of her friends decide they’re the ones to solve it! Between the chaos of the WhatsApp groups, drop off drama, and some laugh out loud moments, their amateur sleuthing is relatable and hilarious. Light, funny, and full of school-run energy. Would definitely like to read more from this author.

3.6 rounded up. This is a light, cozy mystery about who killed the demanding Queen Bee of the PTA.
In the audiobook version, I sometimes had difficulty telling apart the two main female characters, Lucy and Rachel. They seemed to depend on each other yet didn’t yet feel like very close friends. They both had a lot to say about the Yummy Mummy group of perfectly polished mums who dressed for school drop-off then went day drinking. The mystery itself was good, with many red herrings and misdirection. I enjoyed the mystery even though the people didn’t pull me in.
The narration was fine, though the voices were not distinctive. Less voicing the characters and more simply reading the book.

Loved this book and could not put it down.
It perfectly captures the playground mafia and the cliques that emerge especially with the PTA.
Good to see the messaging app included so you can see the group dynamics.
Amazed that this is their first book and proud to live near the author.

Murder's on the menu, and no one is safe from playground gossip…
From cocktails to cold tea, and swanky dinners to school-gate antics, Rachel Walker has lost her old life — and her identity. But when the new term begins, and she's swept into the Parent WhatsApp group chat, she's determined to find her purpose again.

Then a fellow mum turns up dead after the PTA Bake-Off party… and Rachel was the last person to message the group.

I really loved this book, which was fast paced, humorous and was told from several points of view. The characters were well developed; with some I liked and others had traits that I didn’t like. The author did a good job of some of the characters displaying some of the anxieties and confidence issues that can be felt when you are part of a group of people.

This was a cozy thriller to me, well written and kept me engaged from the start. There were elements of humour incorporated throughout. The plot wasn’t overly complex, and it made it quick to read. Whilst I enjoyed this book it wasn’t quite 5 stars for me, as after the main plot reveal there were a few further chapters that didn’t really reveal anything new. I would recommend this book.
My thanks to Bloodhound books for the copy of this book.

Overall a good read, with lots of fun snippets inserted throughout.
But, also a bunch of characters… mostly school moms, that were hard to keep track of…

We have Victoria, who has obviously established her place in the school chain.
She seems to be equally liked and disliked by the community.
And, she decides to host a bake off to see who she will ALLOW to bake for the school bake events… you know…the ones that get all the baked goods donated… (I found this oddly hysterical… but it’s probably right on the money for many schools! 😳🤔🤣)

BUT, during the hosted bake-off event, Victoria drops dead! Right here in the middle of everyone…

And so the police are called to investigate. And they do… but seem to get nowhere..

Soooo… some of the Moms decide to take on their own investigation… and that’s when it starts to get very interesting… and funny!

And so we go with these Moms/investigators as they trifle through all the ‘suspects’… on and on.

Funny. Scary. Enlightening. Sad…. But, oddly unrealistic and yet… relatable!

3 1/2 stars for me, founded up to 4!

If Thursday Murder Club and Motherland had a baby… it would be The Jam Sandwich Detectives 🫖🔍

If you love your mysteries cosy, clever, and packed with gossip-fuelled tension, you need this on your TBR.

💥Synopsis💥

We follow Rachel Walker, who’s trying to rebuild her sense of self after life takes a turn, when a fellow mum turns up dead after the PTA Bake-Off party... and Rachel was the last person to message the group.

With rumours flying and trial-by-mum-chat in full swing, Rachel joins forces with her closest friend Jane and their new ally Frankie. Together, the trio swap the playground for playing detectives, and soon uncover that at this Bake-Off, poison was very much on the menu.

But when Rachel stumbles on the juiciest secret of all, she must ask herself: how far will she go to clear her name?

My thoughts 💭

✨ The perfect balance of school playground parent politics (it’s brutal, honestly)
✨ A mystery that keeps twisting right to the very end
✨ Rachel is a relatable main character - she’s messy, human, and easy to root for
✨ Loved the detective trio energy of Rachel, Jane & Frankie
✨ “just one more chapter” vibes
✨ Perfectly paced
✨ Every character felt suspicious at some point (in the best way)
✨ If you love Thursday Murder Club vibes with Motherland-style chaos… this is IT 😍📚

★★★☆☆

The Jam Sandwich Detectives ended up being a pretty fun, easy read. We follow a group of school moms who get pulled into solving a murder within their own circle, which leads to a lot of drama and chaos right from the start.

The whole PTA mom group dynamic was probably my favorite part. It felt a little messy in a way that kept things entertaining, and there were definitely some funny moments mixed in. It’s very much a light mystery you can fly through without thinking too hard.

That said, there are a lot of characters to keep track of, and at times I found myself getting a bit mixed up. I also saw some of the twists coming pretty early, and I didn’t really connect with the characters enough to feel invested.

Overall, it was a quick, slightly chaotic cozy mystery that I had a decent time with, even if it didn’t completely stand out.

The Jam Sandwich Detectives is one of those cozy, charming little mysteries that sneaks up on you with how heartwarming it is. It has that perfect blend of small‑town sweetness, quirky characters, and light mystery vibes that make you want to curl up with a cup of tea and just vibe your way through the chapters. It feels like a warm blanket kind of book ... nothing too high stakes, just genuinely delightful storytelling.
I loved the community feel, the gentle humor, and the way the mystery unfolds without ever taking itself too seriously. It’s wholesome but not boring, cute without being saccharine, and just… joyful. Honestly, a great palate‑cleanser read.

I enjoyed the audiobook! The British accent was adorable. It totally added to the cozy charm and made the setting feel even more vivid. But I’ll be honest, I would’ve appreciated duet narration or at least multiple narrators. With only one narrator doing both Rachel and Jane, I kept getting confused about whose head I was in, especially when scenes shifted quickly. It wasn’t enough to take away from the story, though!

Still, if you’re in the mood for a cute, comforting mystery with British coziness baked right in, this one is a sweet treat.

Thanks to Dreamscape Media for an early listen in exchange for honest feedback!

This was SO FUN! I really enjoyed the drama - real and imagined - of the women's daily lives and interactions, with each other and with their families. It was melodramatic and overblown and all-too-real all at the same time, which made it very representative of what it feels like to be a mom! While I must admit I did see the Big Reveal coming, there were so many smaller but still high-impact revelations along the way that I did NOT see at all, that the overall read was still a fun and surprising one.

The writing was engaging, as was the narration. I think the various women's personalities were a great mix and allowed the author to play them off one another to keep things witty and snarky. It was fun(ny) but had heart too, and the balance was well-managed - never devolving into sappy but also allowing for genuine emotional relatability. I enjoyed this and will definitely look for more from Clare Thompson!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.

"Murder's on the menu, and no one is safe from playground gossip..."

The Jam Sandwich Detectives is cosy crime at its best! The PTA chair is murdered at her own bake off party and one of the mums attending stands accused of killing her. In order to clear the name of their friend, the mums band together to solve the murder.

I loved the multi POVs and the mixed media inclusion with the WhatsApp group messages. The characters felt real and relatable and the writing was witty.

This was the comfort read I needed and I highly recommend giving it a go if cosy crime is your jam! 🍓

3 ⭐️ - Cosy little mystery. Being a school parent myself I loved all the little ‘mum chat’ text exchanges and the info on the PTA, so true to real life! Although I had figured out the ending by about 42% I still found this enjoyable, read in one sitting and would still read another about these characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I haven't read any previous work by this author but am looking forward to any future books.

Victoria Sandwich is head of PTA and dies at the bake off competition held by herself. All the mum's start looking at each other and a What'App group is blaming a particular mother. 3 of the less cliquey mum's get together and form the Jam Sandwich Detectives and investigate the murder.

It's really good fun to read and highly recommend it

This was such a fun one to read! A cozy little mystery with housewives as the main characters. I enjoyed the storyline and while I had my suspicions, I was surprised by the ending of this one. The chapters were quick which I loved! Easy to stay engaged and follow along. There were multiple POVs that were easy to follow as well. There was humor in this one that really did make me laugh throughout. Definitely a fun read!

This was a fun read involving some mothers who decide to start their own investigation when one of them is the main suspect in the murder of another mother who hosts a bake-ff party at her home.

I liked the main characters, especially Rachel and Frankie, and the whole school run side of things felt quite real, as was the perceived need to keep up appearances and the stress and anxiety that this must induce. There was plenty of humour throughout. The actual culprit did take me by surprise.

I guess this will be a standalone but I'd definitely read more by this author.

I really enjoyed this book. When the chair of the school PTA is murdered at a baking party, everyone assumes it's death by cake and all the other mums present are under suspicion. Three of them get together and start a bit of amateur investigating, asking questions, comparing notes, uncovering clues and secrets along the way. A nice cosy mystery with no blood and gore, and using playground gossip and chat group messages to show just how cliquey and bitchy some of the mums can be. The ending is a little drawn out, perhaps going on too long after the puzzle is solved, leading me to expect some final unexpected twist, but generally a gentle, easy to read and sometimes funny story.

I got the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Clare Thompson, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. All thoughts are my own.

Let me start by commenting on the audiobook. The narrator actually did a pretty good job with this one. She was a great storyteller, did an amazing job with the acting (especially differentiating character voices). However, I feel like most audiobooks have the same tone they are trying to set which makes the narration feel robotic. I don't think every word, every sound needs to sounds perfect. But overall, it was an easy listen.

── ⋆⋅𖤓⋅⋆ ──

In this book, a mom from the PTA bake-off group gets murdered. Prime suspect is Rachel. Rachel, Jane and the new addition to the friend group Frankie decide to play detective to clear her name. Sounds pretty interesting, right? Things get even more interesting when Rachel gets too much into other people's businesses. She finds out a verrryyy juicy secret and things start to resolve after that is revealed.

For the plot, all I can say is that much didn't happen. Yes, they were trying to play detective and they did find out some stuff but there was no big plot-twist imo. The ending (the juicy secret) was cliché and happened way too late into the book but the writing of some parts did make the book more intense and exciting. Overall, I'd say the plot was a bit weak, or at least not interesting enough (for me).

The pacing with the writing was pretty fast-paced. The English was pretty easy to understand. I did have to speed the audiobook to 1.15x because I was getting bored.

The other reviews say that this book is really cosy. In a way, I can understand why. It's not slow-paced, the plot has some interesting hooks, it is not a scary thriller book. However, it didn't have that small town coastal setting cosiness, or a cute little place setting. The setting was a bit weak: When I read cosy mysteries I want to feel like I'm a part of that setting, or the book itself. Not enough descriptions of the surroundings to make it cosy imo.

It definitely wasn't a bad read. My rating is unfortunately pretty low, but that is because I don't think I'd lose anything if I didn't read this book.

p.s. the cover is soo pretty! love it ♡

All thoughts are my own. Thank you for the ARC!

I enjoyed this book, even if it did get annoying with all the hashtag speak or the fact that the only way they could communicate with each other seemed to be by group texts but I guess it's a sign of the times and the world we live in. Otherwise it was a good mystery and the group chats did drop of slightly as the main character became a suspect. The story is told by multiple characters, which works well as it gives you an all round picture of the investigation and from different perspectives. It didn't help me solve the murder but meant there was a number of suspects to follow up on. I liked the characters and think it had the feel of the tv series The Marlow Murder Club, just with younger and hipper characters
It seems lately I am claiming to have no clue who the killer was in my reviews a lot but this book certainly took the biscuit and I was shocked with who it turned out to be. Well done to the author for keeping that one up her sleeve.
The Jam Sandwich Detectives sounded a funny name to call themselves but I liked the circumstance of how it came about. I hope there are more books planned for the series because I will be joining them again, maybe not for cake though.

Rachel with a second child just starting school, she vowels to do better and he more involved, even if it does mean being added to the school group chat. So when volunteers are asked to bake a cake, she jumps at the chance. Well not exactly, as she can't bake but she asks fellow playground mum Jane to make her one. Good job Jane is up to the task and doesn't let Rachel turn up with a coffee and walnut cake, as the host is allergic to nuts. Some how she ends up dead anyway and everybody blames Rachel. Being snubbed or dissed by the yummy mummies was not in the plan and neither was being arrested for murder. So Rachel forms her own group The Jam Sandwich Detectives, can they clear her name and find the real killer?
I liked the narrator. She was a real treat to listen too and she made providing the characters there own voice a piece of cake.

I cannot believe The Jam Sandwich Detectives is Clare Thompson’s debut because WOW, what a way to make an entrance!
Let’s be honest for a second… the title? The cover? Completely irresistible. I went in expecting something light and quirky, and while it absolutely delivered on the fun, it also gave me a twisty, gossip-filled mystery that I could not stop listening to.
From the very first moment, I was pulled into Rachel Walker’s world...a world that feels all too real with school runs, PTA drama, and the chaos of trying to figure out who you are after life shifts in ways you didn’t plan. But then… you add in a murder at a Bake-Off party?! I mean, come on - that’s the kind of chaos I’m here for.
And let’s talk about that Parent WhatsApp group.
Because if you know, you KNOW. The gossip, the judgment, the side-eyes hidden behind “friendly” messages… it was equal parts hilarious and terrifying. Honestly, that alone made this book feel so relatable and sharp.
The trio, Rachel, Jane, and Frankie, were such a fun dynamic. They felt like real women you’d meet at school pickup, just… you know… solving a murder on the side. Their friendship brought humor and heart, which balanced perfectly with the suspense building underneath all the chatter and secrets.
And speaking of secrets, this book has layers. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, it shifts. The tension sneaks up on you in the best way, and suddenly you’re fully invested in uncovering who’s lying, who’s hiding something, and who might be next.
I also listened to the audiobook, and Rachel Atkins absolutely nailed it. She brought each character to life so distinctly that it made the story even more immersive. It felt like I was right there in the middle of the group chat chaos.
There’s just something about this book, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it had me hooked from start to finish. It’s witty, addictive, a little messy (in the best way), and packed with drama, secrets, and just enough danger to keep you glued.
I’ll be watching Clare Thompson VERY closely after this one because if this is her debut, I can only imagine what she does next 👏💜

If you’ve ever stood at the school gate wondering how other parents seem to have their lives perfectly together (while you’re just hoping you remembered spirit day), The Jam Sandwich Detectives will feel hilariously familiar.
Set in the chaotic world of London school mums, the story follows Rachel Walker, a woman trying to rediscover herself after losing the identity she once had before motherhood took over. When the new school term begins, Rachel gets pulled into the dreaded Parent WhatsApp group — a place where PTA bake-offs, gossip, and subtle competitive parenting thrive. But things take a dark turn when a fellow mum dies after the PTA Bake-Off party… and Rachel was the last person to message the group.
What follows is a cozy mystery full of playground politics, mom drama, and amateur sleuthing. Rachel teams up with her friend Jane and their new ally Frankie to figure out what really happened — all while navigating school pick-ups, rumors, and the ever-present judgment of other parents.
What makes this book especially fun is how relatable it is. The author captures the Instagram vs. reality version of motherhood perfectly. The mom guilt, the pressure to appear perfect, and the absurd lengths some parents go to for school events are both outrageous and painfully recognizable. Rachel herself is a bit of a mess — but in the most realistic way. Honestly, what mom isn’t?
This was a quick, enjoyable read that I finished in a single day while doing everyday chores. It’s light, funny, and exactly the kind of book that puts you in a good mood. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with humor, relatable characters, and a bit of school-gate chaos, The Jam Sandwich Detectives is a delightful treat.

The book was provided for my enjoyment from NetGalley.

🎧 listened as an audiobook - narration 4/5 The audiobook is decent overall, but I did find some of the character voices quite similar, which occasionally made it difficult to distinguish between perspectives especially given the multiple first person narrators.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nothing says suburban chaos quite like a PTA baking competition ending in a suspected nut induced murder. The Jam Sandwich Detectives follows three mums whose lives become entangled when Victoria Sandwich, a notoriously demanding host with a severe nut allergy, dies after tasting the competition entries in her own home.

While suspicion initially falls on Rachel, who had joked about killing Victoria and may not have even baked her own cake, she's far from the only suspect. With a house full of competitive bakers and simmering tensions, it quickly becomes clear that almost everyone had a reason to want Victoria gone.

The book is engaging from the outset, with a fast pace that makes it easy to get through in one or two sittings. The three mums feel believable, and I particularly enjoyed the subtle exploration of identity and motherhood woven into the story it added a bit more depth than I initially expected from a cosy mystery.

That said, while the plot is entertaining, it’s not especially unpredictable. Around the halfway mark, I began to suspect who the culprit was, partly due to the structure of the narrative. The use of first person perspectives works well for pacing and character insight, but it also makes certain absences noticeable, which slightly reduces the impact of the final reveal. I did enjoy however the motives for the character who had done it.

Overall, it’s a cosy, easy read with a strong premise, even if the mystery itself doesn’t fully surprise.

Review of ALC received from NetGalley
(Rounding up to 4 from 3.5)

Who would think a PTA bake off can become a murder scene?

I got this book expecting a cozy mystery and that's what I got. It is a lighthearted murder mystery with a bit of humor and drama that is entertaining. If you're looking for something deep and multilayered, with complex characters, this is not it . It is light, fun, easy and witty read with a bit of twists.

We follow Rachel Walker, a London school mom trying to rediscover herself. She gets pulled into a group of moms, full of gossip, messy group chats, and secrets. When a fellow mom drops dead at a bake-off, Rachel teams up with her friends Jane and Frankie to solve the mystery.

The plot was predictable for the most part but I still really enjoyed it. Sometimes you just need something light that doesn't require much thinking, something you can just sit back and enjoy. There are lots of characters and sometimes it's hard to keep up at times. It's a story of motherhood, PTA life, playground politics, friendships, messy life, insecurities, Mom Sleuths and chaos.
If you like British cozy reads this is for you. For the fans of The Thursday murder club.

A big Thank you to NetGallery and Dreamscape Media and the author for the gifted ALC. All opinions are mine.

The Jam Sandwich Detectives
By Clare Thompson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a fun listen.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel when I first started it. The narrator has a very distinct voice, but after a few chapters, I realized it was actually perfect for Rachel - slightly brash, a little frazzled, but still very relatable. A mom in every sense of the word, doing her best and loving her family. That said … there were definitely a handful of moments where I wanted to reach through the pages and shake her 😅

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Rachel and the rest of the trio, Jane and Frankie. Frankie especially stood out to me. I feel like she brought something the group needed. She’s trying so hard to fit in, a little unaware of social norms, and constantly putting her foot in her mouth … which made her both cringey and endearing.

The mom chat moments felt very real. I’ve absolutely been in those situations where a conversation is flowing, you chime in, and suddenly … silence. Then comes the spiral: What did I say? Did I offend someone? Do they just not like me? So that piece hit a little too close to home.

The amateur sleuthing was clever, and while the culprit (no spoilers) felt a bit expected, it also … wasn’t? I liked that the story took us in several different directions before getting there.

Overall, I’d definitely check out more from this author.

The Jam Sandwich Detectives was such a fun, easy mystery that I ended up flying through in just a couple of days.

The story kicks off when a member of a local mom group is murdered at a party—someone who, to be honest, wasn’t exactly beloved. In response, three women from the group form their own unofficial investigation team (the “Jam Sandwich Detectives”) and start digging into everyone who was there that night. What follows is a mix of amateur sleuthing, small-town dynamics, and a lot of personality-driven moments as they try to piece together what really happened.

This book leans more toward a cozy, humorous mystery than a dark thriller, which I really appreciated. It’s definitely on the lower end of the trigger spectrum and feels like a lighter, more approachable take on the genre. If you’re someone who likes mysteries but doesn’t want anything too heavy or intense, this is a great pick.

For me, this was a solid 3-star read, which on my scale means I genuinely enjoyed it and would recommend it to others—it just didn’t quite stick with me long after finishing. It’s the kind of book that’s perfect for when you want something engaging, quick, and entertaining without a huge emotional investment.

Overall, I had a really good time with this one. It’s a charming, satisfying mystery with a strong sense of fun, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a lighter crime read.

The Jam Sandwich Detectives by Clare Thompson was such a fun and entertaining listen! The playground politics and school gate humor were spot on and had me laughing throughout. Anyone who has ever been added to a parent WhatsApp group will find this hilariously relatable.

Rachel is such a messy, human, easy to root for character and her detective trio with Jane and Frankie was an absolute delight. The WhatsApp group chat elements woven into the story were a brilliant touch that added so much personality and chaos to the whole thing. The mystery itself kept me engaged with plenty of twists along the way.

The narrator did a fantastic job bringing all the different mum personalities to life and really leaned into the humor in a way that made everything land perfectly in audio format.

My only nitpicks are that the twist became a little predictable early on, the pacing does slow down in the middle, and some of the characters could have used a little more development. None of that took away from how much fun this was, though!

A perfect light and entertaining listen for anyone who loves cozy mysteries with a side of chaotic parenting energy!
