A deliciously steamy, suspenseful, and darker contemporary royalty Beauty and the Beast retelling about a grumpy single dad and the woman who brings him to his knees. Welcome to the cursed kingdom of Messalina…

When my sick father wanders into the off-limits palace where the widowed king of Messalina lives with his three children, I know we're in trouble.

Locked away since the tragic death of his wife, the whispers of an ancient royal curse are more alive than ever.

And when my father is taken prisoner and I accidentally break a priceless statue, I learn first hand that the rumors of the callous beast king with his gorgeous face and frosty disposition are true.

Especially when he gives me an ultimatum: become the nanny for his children or my father goes to prison.

It isn't until I move into the palace that I see there's life in the walls, passion lurking beneath smoldering glances and forbidden moments, and endless love for three beautiful children--the king's one soft spot.

The longer I stay, the more in love I fall with the children and the man who does all he can to keep his distance. Until one night he shatters my innocence and shows me exactly what it means to be owned by the king.

But this is no fairy tale, and no matter how we feel, we can never be together.

On top of that, there's a darkness we can't escape. A danger lurking, waiting to kill again.

And when it comes for us, there will be no stopping it until it succeeds.

CURSED KING is a STEAMY contemporary (NOT romantasy or paranormal) fairy tale retelling. It is the beginning of a series of four fairy tale retellings with a heavily interconnected plot and should be read in order. Cursed King ends on a CLIFFHANGER with the resolution in Cursed Queen. The remaining books in the series will be standalone couples. This book was previously published through Yonder as The King's Forbidden Nanny.

Cursed King (Once Upon Ever After, #1) by Julie Saman

4/5 stars

Cursed King is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much. It is the story of the King of Messalina. King Sebastian, who is waiting for his wife with his three young children, sees his wife's helicopter fly in and it suddenly crashes. Killing everyone inside. He never believed that his family was cursed but suddenly he starts believing in that dreaded curse.

The curse was created by Emperor Claudius who loved Queen Messalina so much that he gave her her own piece of land and kingdom. But when she conspired against him he cursed her royal blood and damned the descendants. Death and misery follows the bloodline to this day.

Sebastian takes his children and moves to a highly fortified castle and hasn't left it in three years. All in order to keep his children safe and away from the curse. But three years have passed and the children experience mental health problems due to being confined to the castle. Sebastian is harsh and not as kind as he should be to some of his personnel. He has driven away a lot of nannies and the last one just quit.

We learn that Sebastian never truly loved his wife. He chose her because she was a good match. They had a kind and joyful marriage. But he didn't love with his heart nor soul. But he treated her with the respect and kindness she deserved.

Meanwhile Bellamy gets a call from her father. Telling her he invented something and is going to MIT to present his idea. But her father has dementia and lost a huge part of his memories after a car accident that killed her mother and hurt her father. She gets a call from the care facility that takes care of him that he left and they are tracking him down. Bellamy opens the app she installed on her father's phone and sees he is in the palace. She goes there as quickly as she can to pick him up. But when she arrives and she informs about him she hears that he has been arrested for stealing. She convinces the guard to let her in. And he leaves her in a room while he is searching for more information about her father. She accidentally breaks a priceless bust and suddenly two girls run into the room. Princes Phaedra and Sabrina instantly steal her heart and they form a tight bond within minutes.

Sebastian is so angry. Angry that two people got into his palace without the proper protocol. His housekeeper Emily asks him to hire her as the new nanny and he flatout refuses. Until they meet and he instantly feels a strong connection to her. She taunts him and isn't afraid to speak up. He loves how feisty she is. And after his daughters beg him to hire her he agrees. As payment for the broken bust. He will pay her royally but also forces her to accept the position.

If he's going to keep me here, give me this bullshit ultimatum, the least I can do is have some fun with him.

And that is what this beautiful book is about. Is about children who are hurt en mentally scared by their mothers death and being locked up. They are scared that they are cursed and they miss the outside world so much. Bellamy does everything in her power to make them happy and she slowly nudges Sebestian in the right direction to open up the world for his three children.

At first Sebastian keeps his distance. But they are intricately drawn to one another and they bask in their banter and their push and pull.

It's a good thing you didn't ask me to tell you all the dirty thoughts I have about you. Because not only would I have told you, I would have shown you."

Every word and every interaction brings them closer together until they clash and the passion cannot be ignored any longer.

"What are you doing?"
He pockets my underwear. "I want to smell you later when I no longer can. When you're fast asleep tonight in your bed, I want your p**** on my face while I jerk off."
"W-what?"

I love how their love ignites and how fiercely it burns. I also love how rather sweet and kind and open it is. But the prime minister is watching in the shadow and he wants to own Bellamy all to himself. And suddenly things go off the rails and it all explodes in a big bright burst of flames.

The book ends on a huuuuge cliffhanger! So be prepared for that if you read this beauty of a book. But I don't really mind it all that much. I am super excited for the sequel.

I really love how much beauty and the beast elements this story has. I love how the greatest storylines follow the fairytale and that made it a true joy to read. I also loved immensely how big the presence of the children was. You could really feel them grow closer to Bellamy and I could easily feel the love grow and expand really organically and truthfully.

And the way Sebastian supports Bellamy with the help her father needs had my heart bursting with love with how much he truly sees what is going on inside her heart and soul.

4 huge stars from me for Cursed King! I can't wait to read Cursed Queen. ♥

P.S:
Thank you to everyone who responds and comments on my reviews. This last week I have been unable to post comments to reviews. I can post like one or two and then Goodreads gives an error. I am not sure if it is a block of some kind. But know that I am not ignoring you. And that I will catch up as soon as Goodreads allows me to respond again. My sincere apologies!

I was so interested to see how this author would take a story for a darker turn. I really enjoy her Boston Billionaires, and there have been hints at what she could do if she really let loose. While I don't think that this book went heavily dark, I do think it started to tiptoe in and it won't be too jarring for any fans of previous works from J. Saman.

We have here a classic set up for a B&B retelling, but make him a grumpy King Sebastian, who is a single dad who needs a nanny and believes he has a curse on his family. Add in lovely Bellamy, who is just trying to take care of her ailing father and follows after him onto the castle grounds, only to stumble onto a job opportunity... well, it works!

The dark elements seemed to be in the BDSM that the king likes to indulge in but has pushed down in until now. With Bellamy, he finds an outlet for that, as she's only too eager to try hinges with him, once they give into their desires of course. Otherwise... this didn't really read too dark at all.

I also think it went from lust to love in a single sex scene. Which never feels the best really, but there were other things in the story I loved and their chemistry WAS really good. It also is a fairy tale retelling, so I did glaze a bit of that as well.

I am intrigued to see where the story still has to go, since this had a cliffhanger but it also felt like it was wrapping up before things took this turn, so I am confused. But I liked it enough to continue and since we only have a month between parts 1 and 2, I don't think I'll forget anything.

Dual Narrated ALC Sean Masters & Desiree Ketchum and they did a fine job on it.

4.5🌟, 3.5🌶️

From the very first chapter, this story wrapped itself around me and didn’t let go.

Cursed King is a Beauty and the Beast retelling filled with royalty, a single dad and nanny romance, grumpy sunshine tension, and a lingering curse that hangs over everything. King Sebastian is a fiercely protective father who has shut himself and his children away from the world after tragedy strikes, believing his bloodline is doomed. When Bellamy arrives at the palace searching for her ailing father, she never expects to become the king’s newest nanny or the one to disrupt his carefully guarded life.

Bellamy quickly becomes the heart of the story. Her bond with Sebastian’s children was incredibly touching and added so much warmth and hope to an otherwise heavy setting. You can feel how much Sebastian’s grief controls him and how deeply he loves his kids, even when his fear leads him to make painful choices. Watching Bellamy slowly soften him, challenge his walls, and bring light back into the palace was one of my favorite parts of the book.

The romance builds beautifully alongside the darker elements of the curse and the quiet sense of danger lurking in the background. Some characters immediately made my skin crawl, which only added to the tension. And then there’s the ending.

That cliffhanger should honestly come with a warning, and I loved every second of it. This was an easy 4.5🌟 read and a fantastic start to what promises to be an addictive series.

With every single book she writes, Julie Saman captures my heart all over again. I’ve read more than ten of her books, spanning so many different tropes, and she never misses—this author truly knows how to make every story feel special and unforgettable.

This Beauty and the Beast retelling completely owned my heart and is easily one of my favorites. The story follows Bellamy and Sebastian. After receiving a call that her sick father has run away and is now hiding in the palace of the King of Messalina, Bellamy doesn’t hesitate—she’s ready to do anything to bring him back, no matter the cost. While waiting for her father’s release, she forms a bond with Sebastian’s children and, in a moment of chaos, accidentally destroys a priceless sculpture. Expecting cruelty from the cursed king, Bellamy instead finds herself blackmailed into becoming his children’s nanny as punishment for the mistake she made.

Sebastian is exactly as everyone paints him to be—cold, cruel, and closed off from the world, with his entire heart belonging only to his three children: Phaedra, Sabrina, and Zayer. After losing his wife three years ago, he locked himself and his children away inside the palace, convinced that their curse defines their fate. But slowly, page by page, Bellamy breaks through his walls. She makes him see that cursed or not, they deserve to live. That his children deserve laughter, warmth, love, and a world beyond the palace walls.

The connection between Bellamy and Sebastian was such a joy to read—funny, emotional, and incredibly satisfying. I loved every single moment of watching their relationship grow. And Bellamy’s love for Sebastian’s children? That completely melted my heart. Seeing her care for them so fiercely and selflessly made this story even more special.

That ending left me shattered in the best way, and I cannot wait for the second book. The cliffhanger has been living rent-free in my mind.

If you’re an audiobook lover like me, you absolutely need to experience this story in audio format. Sean Masters and Desiree Ketchum brought these characters to life beautifully.

Thank you so much to Julie Saman for the ARC and ALC 🤍✨

A dark, seductive Beauty and the Beast retelling where curses bite, passion burns, and happily-ever-after is anything but guaranteed.

I love a dark, suspense-filled romance retelling of a classic fairytale—and when you add a tortured, cursed king, three utterly delightful children, a sassy, headstrong nanny, and scorching heat, I am completely hooked. Wrapped around the familiar bones of Beauty and the Beast, Cursed King by Julie Saman delivers a modern, darker fairytale that sinks its claws in from page one and refuses to let go.

Over the past few years, fairytale retellings have exploded, especially those reimagined as darker, more intense romances. Some hit the mark beautifully… others miss entirely. I can say with absolute honesty that Julie Saman’s take is one of the best I’ve read—bold, emotionally rich, and dangerously addictive. Just be warned: this story ends on a jaw-clenching, heart-wrenching, perfectly cruel cliffhanger.

Cursed King, book one in the Once Upon Ever After series, introduces us to King Sebastian—a man burdened by shadows, secrets, and something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface. When Bellamy is hired as nanny to his three children, neither of them could possibly predict what’s about to unfold. Watching Bellamy form an instant, heartfelt bond with the children is pure joy—junk food feasts, cosy movie nights, and the quiet magic she weaves into their lives soften even the hardest edges of this story.

Sebastian may try to keep his distance, but the chemistry between him and Bellamy is undeniable. With every page, the tension tightens and the passion ignites, simmering and sizzling until it’s impossible to ignore. Yet beneath the warmth of found family and growing desire, something darker pulses relentlessly in the background. Is it a curse… or something far more dangerous?

I was completely hooked from start to finish and immediately desperate to dive into the second and final instalment, Cursed Queen. If you love dark fairytale retellings, brooding heroes, fierce heroines, and stories that balance heart, heat, and high-stakes suspense—this one is unmissable.

A Curse That Cuts Deeper Than Magic

In this contemporary retelling of Beauty and the Beast, ‘Cursed King’, King Sebastian lives a secluded and sheltered life with his three children. His family is cursed, and Sebastian does everything in his power to protect his children from the inevitable harm he believes awaits them. When Bellamy enters the castle, the carefully controlled world he has built begins to unravel.

Julie Saman writes in smooth, clear sentences that draw the reader in quickly, making the book difficult to put down. She avoids unnecessary embellishments while still painting scenes sharply and vividly. At the same time, the plot can feel somewhat predictable, especially for readers familiar with the genre and its common tropes. The themes of loss, grief, and the instinct to protect family give the story emotional depth, though some moments could have been developed further.

The story is told from both Bellamy’s and Sebastian’s perspectives, which strengthens the chemistry between the main characters and makes their tension more palpable. Yet, this intensity is occasionally overshadowed by repetition in emotions and thoughts. Sebastian’s children, on the other hand, are a valuable addition: they add depth and make the family dynamic believable and warm.

The castle setting strongly contributes to the oppressive atmosphere: grand and impressive, yet simultaneously cold and isolated from the outside world. This reinforces the feeling that Sebastian is trapped not only by a curse but also by his own convictions.

‘Cursed King’ is a compelling and accessible romance with a dark fairytale atmosphere. Despite some reservations, Julie Saman delivers a story that reads smoothly and evokes emotion, although it leaves the impression that this first installment primarily serves as a prelude to what is yet to come.

Thanks to Valentine PR for this eARC!

This story follows Bellamy, who has put her dreams on hold to care for her father. One day, she is caught on the palace grounds while desperately searching for him. That’s when she comes face to face with the cursed king an infamous ruler with a dark reputation who presents her with an ultimatum she can’t refuse in exchange for her father’s freedom.

I’m a sucker for retellings, so when I saw this was a Beauty and the Beast reimagining, I had to get my hands on the ALC. The audiobook is brilliantly done in dual narration, and Sean and Desiree always deliver a fantastic performance, so I highly recommend picking it up in this format.

I loved Bellamy as a character she stands up for herself and isn’t afraid to call the grumpy king out on his behaviour. She’s been through so much while caring for her father and has made countless sacrifices along the way. I also loved how deeply she connects with the children through shared loss, showing so much compassion despite never having been a nanny before.

Sebastian is captivated by her from the very beginning but resists his feelings. He pushes her away, yet her bratty antics, warmth, compassion, and the light she brings into the palace slowly tugs at his dark heart. Watching their story unfold and seeing the king finally give in to temptation was incredibly satisfying.

I really enjoy Julie’s work and can’t wait to read more from her in the future.

First of all, a huge thank you to Julie Saman and Valentine PR for providing me with an early copy of this book! I feel so lucky to have stepped into this incredible story before anyone else, and honestly? I’m never leaving.

Wow. Just wow. I went into this expecting a cute Beauty and the Beast retelling, but Julie Saman gave me a dark, modern masterpiece that I couldn't put down.

What I loved most was the emotional setup. Bellamy isn't just a random girl; her devotion to her father broke my heart. And the way she enters the palace—not by choice but to save him—made the stakes feel so real. Then we have Sebastian. He is the ultimate "brooding king," but seeing the pain behind his "curse" and how much he loves his three kids made me fall for him instantly.

The chemistry? OFF THE CHARTS. The slow burn was agonizing in the best way possible. When they finally gave in, it wasn't just spicy; it was explosive and possessive. I loved that Bellamy didn’t back down from his dominant nature—she’s exactly the "sunshine" this grumpy beast needed.

The twist at the end? I actually gasped. I was NOT expecting that flip! Now I’m just sitting here staring at the wall, waiting for Cursed Queen.

If you love:
* Forced Proximity / Nanny Trope
* Grumpy/Sunshine & Age Gap
* Royal drama with a dark twist
* Intense, soul-searing spice

then stop what you’re doing and read this. Just be ready for that cliffhanger!

Cursed King by Julie Saman hooked me from the very first pages, because I was instantly excited by the premise. It’s no surprise that every time I put the book down, I couldn’t wait to pick it up again and read just a little more.

The female main character? The spotlight instantly fell on Bellamy! Sweet and caring when needed, especially in her role as a nanny, but also strong and self-assured, Bellamy draws attention not only from the reader, but from those at the palace as well, especially a certain cold, ruthless, and lonely king. I loved being inside Sebastian’s head when he first met Bellamy, his reaction perfectly highlighting the chemistry between them.

“Because there is nothing more powerful than being smart and educated. Especially for a woman. Learn as much as you can, and you’ll be the best queen there is.”

I loved that we don’t get a shy FMC, intimidated by the grumpy king. Not at all. She constantly tests his patience, flirting with him and pushing him to lose control. Their interactions are an absolute delight. The forbidden romance makes the tension explosive, especially since Sebastian has no intention of ever letting love into his life. A cliché, some might say, but one I will never get tired of.

Even though some things weren’t hard to anticipate, the story kept me completely captivated with every page, and the ending was truly the cherry on top. I read it with my heart pounding, and now I can’t wait to pick up the next book.

A spicy, gripping retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I hate a cliffhanger, but this one’s conclusion has, thankfully, already been published. Bellamy stumbles her way into being the nanny to the three royal children of Messalina— which brings her into the unrelenting presence of King Sebastian. Despite all the reasons they shouldn’t, they, of course, fall in love. Cursed King also has a touch of The Sound of Music; Bellamy brightens the whole palace with her infectious personality, and she falls as hard for the adorable children as she does their father. Nice characterization of both children and adults; nothing feels gratuitous. Well edited. Grumpy/Sunshine, age gap, virgin FMC, mild kink.🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This is my first fairytale retelling, and I absolutely loved it.

This book features a single dad and nanny romance, a virgin FMC, close proximity, grumpy sunshine dynamics, royalty, and a Beauty and the Beast retelling.

The story follows Bellamy and Sebastian. Bellamy enters the palace to save her father, who unknowingly wandered onto palace grounds, but ends up becoming the king’s children’s nanny instead.

I loved how the author showed Bellamy slowly wearing Sebastian down and how she loved his children so wholeheartedly. That bond was beautifully written.

I also appreciated how the author explored Sebastian’s grief after losing his wife and his decision to hide his children because of the curse. It really highlighted how deeply protective he is as a father.

I don’t usually dislike characters, but I disliked Samil from the moment he appeared.

Sebastian’s children were absolutely adorable and added so much warmth to the story.

This book ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the second part

This is a 5-star read, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to the author and Valentine PR for this ARC.

4.5 ⭐️/2 🌶️

I was really craving a fairytale retelling when I came across this book and honestly, it hit the spot perfectly. This story has everything I wanted, suspense, angst and just enough spice to keep things fun 🙌🏼

If you love a Beauty and the Beast style retelling, especially one with cute, adorable kids woven into the story, this is such a good pick. The chemistry between Sebastian and Bellamy was chef’s kiss. A grumpy, broody royal king paired with a sweet sunshine heroine? That combo never fails, and it worked so well here. Their dynamic felt natural, emotional, and completely addictive.💕

My only gripe is that this is a duet. I did not mentally prepare myself for that and now I’m stuck waiting for book two because I NEED answers.😅

Thank you Valentine PR & Literary Management for this ARC

This book is a modern day Beauty and the Beast retelling that delivers a swoony single dad/nanny romance packed with tension and spice.

The slow burn buildup between the main characters, Bellamy and Sebastian was definitely my favourite part of the book. The flirty banter and the l9ve to hate each other atmosphere was amazing. The chemistry was undeniable, and the spice was spicing, the scenes were incredibly well written and definitely a standout for me.

My only issue was after such a long and delicious buildup, the romance escalated very quickly once they crossed that line. For me, it felt like the emotional shift went from 1 to 100 almost overnight. I would have loved a bit more time sitting in that transition before everything moved full speed ahead.

The ending though, the cliffhanger completely caught me off guard, and I NEED to know what happens next. It left me frustrated in the best way and absolutely guarantees I’ll be picking up the next book.

Overall, Cursed King is a sexy, emotionally charged romance with great tension, great spice, and an ending that will leave you desperate for more. If you love single dad/nanny romances or modern fairytale retellings, this one is definitely worth checking out

I knew that I would love this book even before it came out. Just the fact that Julie wrote a Beauty and the Beast retelling in modern times, told me that the story would be so beautiful.

Sebastian is a widowed king of Messalina. He lives with his three children away from the world after the death of his wife. Bellamy is a beautiful young girl who is trying to live her life properly and takes care of her father, who has dementia. One day he leaves the facility and wanders in the king's castle. Sadly, the king is not happy about that and in order to let him leave, he makes a deal with Bellamy. She has to become the children's nanny so he can let her father go.

Neither of them is pleased with the presence of the other, but they don't have a choice. And here is where their real story begins.

From the moment he saw her, Sebastian was mesmerized by Bellamy. He wanted her for himself straight away, but knew that he couldn't do anything about it because of his children and the fact that he is the king. But that didn't stop his fantasies. He was trying really hard to stay away from her, but that was simply impossible. Bellamy felt the same way, but she knew she had responsibilities and told herself that she was not here to lust after the king. But she couldn't stop poking and teasing him constantly. The banter between those two was so beautiful. It was like an invisible magnet was pulling them towards each other. Their interactions were like a cat and mouse and the attraction was getting bigger and bigger. Until one day, they decided to let go. I loved watching Sebastian being with her. Most of the time he was rough around the edges, but when it came to her, he was soft like a jello. It was just impossible for him not to fall in love.

You know, I always love when Julie Saman writes spicy scenes. Sebastian was very dominating in the bedroom and I can say for sure that Bellamy was his match. He was worried that he was a bit rough sometimes, but she accepted this side of him with a matching desire of her own. There was so much spice and passion in those scenes that made me blush. There was definitely some kink happening and it was so damn hot. I was there for all of it 🥵.

As a part of a duology, the story did end on a cliffhanger, but there won't be much of a waiting for the second book, because it comes out on the 26th of January.

Cursed King is my first “start-the-year” read of 2026, and honestly? I couldn’t have picked a better book. This was everything I wanted and more dark, emotional, swoony, and completely addictive.

Julie Saman delivers a modern Beauty and the Beast retelling that feels fresh, seductive, and layered with real emotional weight. With tropes like single dad/nanny romance, forced proximity, grumpy x sunshine, virgin FMC, royalty, and a brooding cursed king, this story hooked me from the very first chapter and never let go.

The story follows Bellamy, a devoted daughter caring for her father who suffers from dementia. When he unknowingly wanders onto palace grounds, Bellamy is forced into an impossible position one that lands her inside the palace as nanny to the king’s three children. Enter Sebastian, the widowed King of Messalina: cold, guarded, grief-stricken, and fiercely protective of the children he has hidden away from the world.

What truly made this book shine was the emotional depth. Bellamy isn’t just “sunshine” she’s strong, selfless, and endlessly kind. Watching her form such a beautiful, genuine bond with Sebastian’s children absolutely melted my heart. The way she loves them, protects them, and brings warmth back into their lives was written so tenderly and felt incredibly real.

Sebastian, on the other hand, is the perfect tortured king. His grief over his wife, his fear surrounding the curse, and his desperate need to protect his children make him a deeply compelling MMC. Beneath his gruff exterior is a man unraveling and Bellamy slowly, patiently wears him down in the most satisfying way. Seeing him soften for her, while still remaining dominant and intense, was chef’s kiss.

And the chemistry? Unreal. The slow burn was deliciously agonizing, full of banter, teasing, and restrained desire. When they finally give in, the spice is intense, passionate, and unapologetically hot. Sebastian is dominant, Bellamy meets him beat for beat, and their dynamic is powerful, sensual, and emotionally charged. Julie Saman never misses when it comes to writing spice.

I also have to mention Sebastian’s children were absolutely adorable and added so much heart and warmth to the story. They made the found-family element truly special. On the flip side, I knew I didn’t trust Samil the moment he appeared… and let’s just say that instinct paid off.

The ending? I gasped. This book ends on a brutal, perfectly executed cliffhanger that left me staring at the wall, completely wrecked and desperate for book two. Thankfully, the wait won’t be long but wow, that twist hit hard.

If you love:
• Dark fairytale retellings
• Single dad + nanny romance
• Grumpy beast x sunshine heroine
• Royal drama, curses, and secrets
• High heat with emotional depth

…then Cursed King is an absolute must-read. Julie Saman has crafted one of the best modern fairytale retellings I’ve read bold, seductive, emotionally rich, and dangerously addictive.

Five stars without hesitation. I cannot wait for Cursed Queen. 👑🔥

I really had no idea what to expect going in on this one, but let me tell you, I was GOBSMACKED. This is so different than her other series, but it was still so good, and filled with the spice and emotion you're used to getting from Julie, but this was darker. angrier. grittier. And had a lot of angst. Plus that action packed finale and that cliffy?!? WHAT THE WHAT. Make sure you read closely because shit was popping off everywhere!

This is for the women who watched Beauty and the Beast as a kid and was disappointed immediately when he transferred back into the prince. I SAID WHAT I SAID.

Go one click now!!!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **

I am unwell with how much I loved this book. I seriously listened to it in ONE SITTING! I don't blurbs but she had me in a chokehold at "beauty and the beast retelling".

What you'll get:
- Dark romance
- Beauty and Beast retelling
- SPICY
- She's the nanny and he falls hard
- Cliffy

The way that I will be on pins and needles waiting for the next book in this series! If you need me, I'll just be begging for it! Thank you Julie and MLA for the audio! It was chefskiss!

i’m giving it 4 stars!

this was such a good read! especially for your 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗱, 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 and 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 girlies! and you add on 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 *chefs kiss* ✨🤌🏼 aaaaaa this was so cute and sinful at the same time—the spicy level in this is phew ❤️‍🔥 OFF THE CHARTS (,,>﹏<,,)

𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙮 or 𝙨𝙚𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙣 SIR THE MOUTH ON THIS MAN 🔥 the way his 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 comes out in close quarters 🫣 but on the other hand he’s also so sweet and dedicated to his kids and bellamy 🫶🏻 we do love ourselves a 𝗴𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗱 ( ͈ര ̫ര ͈) ⊹`𓈒

𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙢𝙮 is such a sweet girl that takes on too much on her own 🥲 she has been handling everything on her own for so long, she struggles to let anyone help her—this is so relatable (。•́︿•̀。) but i do love her 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 and her 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 😫

a huge thank you to valentine pr for this arc in exchange for a honest review 🤍

Guess I'm the minority for the moment, but I was immediately put off that at their first meeting it goes into passages of insta lust for him just fantasizing about all the ways he can "take her and her giving him a bl0w jib.

Maybe it cooled off from that later (based on all these other reviews?), but the element romance of Beauty and the Beast, it definitely doesn't start off as.

5 stars!

I loved this book! A contemporary, non-fantasy or paranormal retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this is a dramatic, fun, sexy, swoony, suspenseful and intense story with the most beautiful romance. With fantastic tropes of royalty, enemies-to-lovers, single parent, boss/nanny, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity and a 15-year age gap, there’s so much to enjoy about this book, and it’s such a great read!

King Sebastian of Messalina (a fictional European country) is a 36-year old widowed father of three who lives an isolated life, locked away with his young children and his staff. His family is long-rumoured to be living under a curse, and after the tragic deaths of a number of family members, and his late wife (even if it was only an arranged marriage), he is determined to keep his children safe and has removed them and himself from public life to do just that.

Bellamy is a 21 year old American woman who has been living abroad with her father since she was a young teenager. When he gets into trouble, she winds up at the royal palace where the staff recognise her as the breath of fresh air needed to take on the role of the children’s nanny. Both Sebastian and Bellamy require convincing, and there may be a bit of coercion to get her to take the job, but she is immediately taken with the children, who adore her in return, and she quickly comes to love her new role.

The big problem with Bellamy moving into the palace is the raging attraction between her and the king. She knows he is wildly out of her league, and given the curse on his family, Sebastian is determined to never get involved with anybody ever again. But from the first moment they meet they are lusting wildly after each other, living together, becoming a part of the children’s lives, and she is snarking back at the king and inappropriately flirting to keep him on his toes, and they are powerless to resist what is building between them.

“I’d like very much to stay. I adore your children, and despite the odd circumstances around me being their nanny, I’ve had an incredible first week with them.”
I believe her. And that’s what’s fucking me up.
“I need to hate you.” I confess.
A soft grin. “So I’ve gathered. How is that working out for you?”
“Depends on the moment.”

It's a fast-moving story, and it doesn’t seem too long before Sebastian and Bellamy are giving into their wild passion for each other and Oh. Holy. Wow. Sebastian is dark and dirty, controlling in the bedroom, he’s a dirty talker and he likes things rough and kinda dirty. The sexy time is intense and wildly hot, and it’s a reflection of the mad passion that these two have for each other.

“It's a good thing you didn't ask me to tell you all the dirty thoughts I have about you. Because not only would I have told you, I would have shown you."

They can’t keep away from each other, and wild sex soon turns into so much more as they find themselves falling hopelessly, and I God, I loved watching them come together! I was effortlessly swept up in all that they feel for each other. It’s sexy and hot with so many sweet moments with the children, and seeing Bellamy break through Sebastians walls and get him to smile again is so heartwarming.

He takes my hand and places it on his chest over his pounding heart.
“It hasn’t beat like this in years. I’m not sure it ever has. What you’re doing to me, Bellamy. Cannot be undone.”

Their love for each other is all-consuming and the swoon is glorious as Sebastian holds nothing back, coming out with grand declarations and filthy talk, and I loved these characters and their deepening relationship so much.

“Everything I am is going to become yours. My mind, my body, my heart. All yours.”

There are obstacles that they need to overcome, but they’re a functional couple. They are open and honest with each other, and I loved seeing them work through their challenges together. But the curse still terrifies Sebastian, and when danger comes for the only woman he has ever truly loved, he is prepared to put everything on the line to protect her.

I felt a whole rollercoaster of emotion with this book. I laughed, I teared up, I fanned myself and I swooned, I felt the suspense, and those final few chapters had my heart pounding. The book does end on a cliffhanger, but J. Saman has been so kind to us and the next book is only a few weeks away.

This is the first book in a duet, and the start of a longer series, Once Upon Ever After which will branch out with more fairytale retellings for other characters, and I cannot wait to continue on with this series.

Such a great read, I loved this one!

5 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Sean Masters and Desireé Ketchum, and I loved this audio! They do a great job with the story, bringing so much heart and heat, and I definitely recommend this one.

SUMMARY: Bellamy’s sick father (dementia) wanders into King Sebastian’s palace uninvited. When Bellamy also enters the palace against the King’s wishes, then accidentally breaks a priceless heirloom, she is caught and given an ultimatum — be the new nanny to the King’s three precious children or her sick father will go to prison.

REVIEW: Cursed King by Julie Saman is book one of a duet. It is a beautiful, steamy, sweet, and modern day, fairy tale-esqe retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Tropes include single dad/nanny, boss/employee, forced proximity, OTT MMC and v1rgin FMC.

The book had medium to semi fast pacing. The plot was highly engaging and entertaining. I wanted to read more to figure out how things would unfold. It’s definitely a “just one more chapter” book that you cannot put down and that ending…… whoa! WHOA! W-H-O-A!!! The cliffhanger had me holding my breath until book two, Cursed Queen, is published in late January 2026. I cannot wait!!!!!

The characters are beautifully written and, despite being royalty, are still oddly relatable. King Sebastian is just a father obsessed with protecting his children. He sequesters himself and the children to keep danger at bay. His life is dedicated to their safety and his responsibilities to his kingdom.

The three children are humble and precocious with an adorable amount of attitude. Each one is endearing in their own way and you can’t help but instantly love them.

Bellamy is a feisty and independent FMC who is used to taking care of business on her own. She hasn’t had anyone to rely on for a long time. When she meets the King, she refuses to put up with his grumpy demeanor. She calls him out on his bad behavior and gives him sass right back.

Bellamy immediately feels a connection with the children and fights for what she feels is best for their emotional well-being. This leads to heated discussions between her and the King.

Sean Masters and Desire Ketchum are fantastic voice actors who did a phenomenal job on the Cursed King. They are able to add emotional nuances to their performances that add depth and personality to the characters. Both narrators are top of my list as faves.

This was my first book authored by Julie Saman and it won’t be my last. I cannot wait to delve head first into her back catalog.

Overall I highly recommend Cursed King by Julie Saman. I give the book 4.5 stars (out of 5) and 3 peppers (out of 5) on the spicy scale. This read is perfect for those who enjoy modern day, fairy tale retelling with a contemporary twist (not a paranormal or romantasy story).

A huge thank you to Julie Saman and Valentine PR for the ALC. All opinions are my own.

ARC Review of Cursed King Book 1 in the Once Upon Ever After Series by Julie Saman This is a 5 star read for me. I absolutely loved this book I couldn’t put it down it had me hooked from the very beginning. I love darker fairytale retellings especially beauty and the beast ones they are my favorite and this one did not disappoint it was so good. I loved all the suspense, emotion, and passion in this book. This is a contemporary fairytale retelling of beauty and the beast it is not a romantasy. This book is part of a duet and does end on a cliffhanger, I can’t wait for the next book. This is a widowed single dad x nanny, 15 yr age gap, spicy, slow burn, royalty, forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine, virgin fmc, beauty and the beast fairytale retelling, darker suspenseful forbidden romance. This is Bellamy and Sebastian’s story. This story is set in the fictional country of Messalina where Sebastian who is 36 is the king, he lost his wife 3 years ago in an accident and is now a single father to his 3 young children who he loves more than anything. There is said to be a curse on the royal family Sebastian never believed in it until his wife’s death but now he does and he will do anything to protect his children from it. He has shut himself and his children away from the world in his palace and has become a recluse, it has made him angry, bitter and resentful. He needs a new nanny for his children since the ones he hires keep quitting. Bellamy is 21 and lives in Messalina her father is unwell and she dropped out of school to work to pay for his care. Bellamy’s father gets in trouble at the palace and she breaks a priceless heirloom when she’s there to get him, because of these things she has no choice but to become the new nanny of Sebastian’s children to keep her father out of jail. I love Bellamy and love relationship with the kids, I also love how she stands up to and challenges Sebastian even if he is the king. He wants to hate her but cant stop lusting after her and she wants him just as much she can’t stop flirting with him and pushing him. Those spicy scenes are extremely hot its like a 5 alarm fire over here with the dirty mouth the king has on him and all his filthy fantasies and I love it. I love that its also more than spice and that Bellamy helps heal the kids and Sebastian she’s their missing piece. I am absolutely feral for this book I read it in 2 days the twists, surprises, the spice, the love story, and that cliffhanger ending had be going crazy thank goodness it’s only a month wait for the 2nd book and conclusion Cursed Queen to come out. I highly recommend this book. I also listened to the audiobook and it was fantastic the narrators were so good theu definitely brought the emotion and passion and made me feel immersed in the story

ALC from valentine PR

he wasn't in love with his queen, but they had an understanding and had friendship in each other after her death. He went through so many nannies, never stayed long . He didn't believe in the curse til that day he lost his queen and his children lost their mother

Bellamy father was forgetting a lot of things and how things work and thought her mother was alive. Still, it was sad he had no memory of it all. She died 8 years ago he had broken down after his wife's death, but it was truly sad for Bellamy to lose her mother.

She put him in the facility, and he seemed happy there. She works long hours and sees him at 21, her life is different from others .

Her father eloped, which means he left without permission. Bellamy  he was found the palace where he wasnt suppose be.

She met the children before finding her father.

Bellamy is American but speaks French. The girls take a liking to her .

The moment he saw Bellamy, he wanted her, which frustrated him deeply. Everyone liked her in his palace, but he was hesitant and unsure why he felt this way towards her .

She was given the choice of being his children nanny or her father go to prison .

She could not deny her attraction towards him, but she as well didnt understand it all, yet she couldn't help how she felt, especially towards his children .

Sebastian (the king)  still tries to dislike Bellamy, but the way he feels about her is hard for him, especially his lust for her .the things he says is 🔥🔥🌶🌶  that man loves it rough .

his oldest daughter truly loves Bellamy so much the way she loves her back all the children she has grown to love and care about.

The tension between them is chefs kiss cause it has me smiling even when he would act as if there isn't something, but deep down, he knows he feels it as much as she does.

Why is it so sexy when he was worried about her not returning after she was done visiting her father in the facility.  The king left the palace to find her, which is a huge thing .

The children never want her leave, especially the girls . Oh, my heart.

This has to be my favorite fairytale retelling of beauty and the beast. The right amount of tension and how Bellamy has fire in her. The way children were drawn to her right away and everyone could see the light in the children . Even Sebastian.

It was truly beautiful yet heartbreaking, showing the grief of everyone he lost Sebastian felt . He was such an amazing father but very protective with the curse. Even though the children didn't understand that. They wanted more freedom .

Samil, i definitely hated his character. I never liked him from the moment he appeared cause he just wanted to hurt Sebastian.
I have been a huge fan of beauty and the beast since the Disney movie  so to have retelling of it , the author did it beautifully and exactly perfect written i was not disappointed at all

Chapter 16 was so deliciously good

It was left cliffhanger, which makes me excited for book 2 to find out what happens next

"Don't touch me again."
"Even if you liked it?"

Bellamy outsmarted me.
She got me to smile. She got me to laugh. She filled my heart with the sweetest of pains to the point where my chest pinched.

“I need to hate you.”
“Love me or hate me, both are in my favor. Love me and I'll be in your heart. Hate me and I'll be on your mind."

“One taste of you won't be enough. Because I will need you constantly. Because I'm not sure I will ever have the power to stop wanting you now that you're mine."

I stole her. I captured her and made her my own. A woman who is lovelier than any I've ever encountered.

I am the only one who has touched her. I am the only one who has given her pleasure.
I am the one.

She is all I want. All I will ever want.
My heart, I reluctantly admit, she owns, as she does the rest of me.

He'll ruin me for eternity.

“You're infectious. I realized I'm going to lose."
“Lose?”
"Yes. Lose. Everything I am is going to become yours. My mind. My body. My heart. All yours. Then what?"

She wants the beast. I can give her that.

Je t'aime. C'est pour tou- jours. Tu m'as libéré

she has set me free. She has forced me to face a world and a life I would have intentionally ignored forever.

“I'm wild for you, Bellamy. You've turned my world upside down and righted it at the same time."

"Mine, Bellamy. This cunt, this body, this heart, this mouth, this mind. All fucking mine."
I love his beautiful heart, but I'm obsessed with his brutal possession.

“I love you. God, how I love you. I don't deserve you.”
“I know who you are, and you don't scare me. Give it all to me, Sebastian. All of you. Never hold back."
"You'll always have all of me, Bellamy. Always."

I want the world to know and acknowledge you as my queen. I want a life with you, Bellamy.

I am a man who has found his other half. A man who will love and cherish you without limits. A king who is hoping to make you his queen.

Cursed King is the first part of the Once Upon Ever After duet. This is a dark Beauty and the Beast contemporary romance. This also delivers one of my favorite tropes, single dad & nanny.

Bellamy has been trying to take care of her father, who suffers with dementia, while working as a teacher in the kingdom of Messalina. Her father sneaks into the palace of the cursed king, Sebastian. He has been living a secluded life with his three children after the death of their mother. He is convinced he is cursed and keeps his children protected and secured, cut off from the world. He forces Bellamy to be their nanny in exchange for her father's release and things heat up fast once she moves in.

Bellamy and Sebastian have a strong attraction, and he is very tempted by her sassy mouth and flirty behavior. She also steps up to try and help his children get more freedom while she formed a close relationship with them. This draws them closer together and he can't deny their connection for long.

I enjoyed this first part of the duet, but I did think it felt more instalust and focused on the sexual attraction. That was fine until they also were declaring their love for each other way too quickly with not a lot of time to form those kind of feelings. I wanted it to have a slower burn.

There was some exciting suspense elements at the end and I am definitely interested in continuing.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
🎤Dual narration by Sean Masters & Desiree Ketchum

This had dual narration by Sean Masters & Desiree Ketchum. They did a great job with the banter, spice, and suspense elements. I did think Sean Masters went in and out of a slight accent for his character, but Desiree's accent for Sebastian was more pronounced so that kind of threw me off for a bit.

Thank you to Valentine PR & Must Love Audio for providing the ALC.

Bellamy is an English teacher in the small kingdom of Messalina, trying to care for her father. When he wanders away from his nursing home, and makes his way into the royal palace, she heads over there to try to negotiate his release. There, she is given two choices, become the nanny for the King’s three children, or she and her father can face imprisonment for trespassing. As she immerses herself into palace life, she falls in love with the children, but also realizes that there is more to the King than his brooding stares and standoffish demeanor.

Sebastian became King at a young age, forced into the role by what is known as his family curse. Following the death of his wife in front of him and his children in a tragic helicopter crash, he has secluded himself and his children, for their safety, refusing to leave the palace for three years. After losing yet another nanny, he finds himself trying to find someone different, when a beautiful american teacher wanders into the palace, and he his convinced by others to bring her on in the role. As the weeks turn into months, he realizes that she not only brings life to the palace, but to his children, and reluctantly, to himself as well. Unable to resist his attraction, they collide in fiery passion, embarking in what may become a doomed love affair.

I received an early copy of this audiobook from Valentine PR and absolutely adored it. I loved the modern-day spin on Beauty and the Beast, and the belief that only love may be able to lift an age-old curse. While Bellamy may be inexperienced when it comes to relationship, her heart and passion are quickly able to break down the walls that Sebastian has never let down for anyone before. As we fall in love right along with Bellamy and Sebastian, we learn that there may be more to the story than was initially thought.Warning, this does have a cliffhanger ending, but Cursed Queen is coming out soon so buckle up for this wild ride.
