Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.

She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.

In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.

According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.

After reading volume 11 this volume was rather uneventful and not all too challenging. Then again not every volume can be as intense as vol. 11 so *lol*, I’ll just see it as a short break before everything goes to hell. XD

Highlights of this volume:

”I do love you, Kyo-chan. I LOVE YOU! BELIEVE ME!”
“Thank you… thank you.”

Aww Kagura really loves Kyo. It was sad to find out that she also was afraid of him and ran away when he showed her his true form and it was even sadder to see that she loved him, but obviously not enough to accept him the way he is. =((( Poor Kyo-kun…

”Rin… Did I not understand something? I thought I understood everything about you, Rin. But maybe I got so complacent that I failed to hear you calling out to me when you needed me most?”

I love Hatsu and Rin, they are such a perfect couple!!! But damn does it kill me that Hatsu doesn’t know why Rin apparently hates him right now. He’s so sweet and caring; he deserves to know the truth!!! T_T

”You all are so lucky to live in the ignorance of youth. You always struggle frantically to keep yourself from drowning when if you’d just relax, you’d find out that you float.”

Shigure is so wise it’s uncanny! And *lol* I just realized that he’s 28 and as a teen he was always one of the wise three men for me but now I’m even older than he is. Which is kind of weird… That’s what you get for taking a break from a manga. You get old while all those characters stay young. *lol*

”Adults have no right to deprive children of their free will, do they? But I think they do have a right to worry over them. Keep thinking about it. I don’t mind if you take twice as long as other people because I want to know the answer YOU give.”

Shishou-San is the best and I’ll forever be thankful he decided to be Kyo-kun’s father!!! <333 Gosh, I love Shishou so much, I can’t even!!! <3333

"It's strange, isn't it? Summer comes every year... but the same summer never comes twice."

🐒 This volume is Ri-chan! 🐒

With summer vacation over, Tohru and the Sohma's return to the school, with Yuki finally beginning his duties as student council president. We see him struggle to find common ground with a group of such strong and yet differing personalities. Tohru begins her long struggle to see if there really is a way to break the curse and stop the lives of those she has come to care about being restricted and lonely. And Kyo decides it is time to put an end to a prolonged chapter of his life, and to once and for all tell Kagura that her feelings are one sided and will not be reciprocated.

I loved seeing each of the trio have their own stories this volume, and see them overcome their own challenges. To finally understand the intense one sided love of Kagura's, to see it for all its love and yet selfishness, was heartbreaking and yet relieving. Through this interaction, we truly see the change Kyo has made, and how he is in charge of his emotions and behaviours, which is such a fantastic character development, considering we began the series with him being so hateful and miserable that he could barely get through any interaction without screaming. It is through Kyo's change that we see the change begin in Kagura, to accept the selfish feelings she has kept secret for all these years, and use this closure to move on. And Tohru, bless her heart, tries her hardest to ensure that the Sohma's no longer have the bear the emotional baggage that comes with being cursed by the zodiac. Her selflessness and bravery will never not hit me hard. I love her more than I love most things in this world, and it is crazy!

🐎 Next volume is my love Rin! 🐎

In this volume, Yuki is further annoyed by the members of the student council, who seem determined to leave him with all the work. But everyone says that it is good for Yuki to break out of his shell and interact with normal people, so he endures. Poor Yuki!

Tohru makes a resolution to find out how to break the curse, and seeks advice from Kyo's Shishou, but doesn't get many specific answers. I'm so proud of Tohru for taking this on, even though she knows it will make Akito attack her.

Kagura and Kyo go on a date, and resolve their true relationship. Kagura admits how she truly feels about Kyo beyond all her suffocating love, and I think she finally accepts that Kyo will never be in love with her because he's in love with Tohru. It's so touching and sweet, and I'm so impressed with Kagura for finally being honest about her feelings. And I'm impressed with Kyo for responding with kindness and calm.

Yuki reaches out to his parents to come to a parent-teacher conference at school, but is disappointed in his mother. That poor guy has so much crap to deal with. I felt bad for him.

Haru tries to reach out to Rin again, but she continues to push him away. They had a very touching and beautiful scene! There's something very mysterious going on between Rin and Shigure, and I don't like it. That Shigure has something up his sleeve and he's manipulating everyone.

Tohru's grandfather hurt his back, and when Tohru goes to visit him, she is overwhelmed by the fear that he will die, despite the fact that his injury is not severe. Poor Tohru, she has already lost so many people, and she can't stand any more loss!

I seriously just love this manga series so much! The gang is back in school from summer and parent teacher conferences are just around the corner! I love Shigure's parental figureness that takes on. Looking forward to more adventures with the crew!

Side note: I just started watching the anime during this volume and WOW was I pronouncing their names wrong in my head.

Tohru and the Sohma's return from their summer vacation. When a student-teacher conference is called the characters contemplate their futures after school. Kagura and Kyo have a heart-to-heart, while Rin and Hatsuharu's relationship is in turmoil. Tohru's grandfather injuries his back, unsettling memories from Tohru's tragic past.

My favourite part of this volume was the interaction between Kyo and Kagura. Kagura takes Kyo to the place they used to play as children, where Kagura once saw Kyo's true form. We finally understand Kagura's feelings for Kyo: her love is based on pity. How she acts toward Kyo makes sense upon this revelation and the development of these two characters is lovely to see unfold. Kyo himself seems to be maturing into someone who is more in control of his emotions and actions. His developing relationship with Tohru is so endearing.

We also see Yuki interacting with other members of the student council, all who have very loud personalities. And Tohru tries her best to look after the Sohma family members, wanting to protect them from the trauma that comes along with the zodiac curse.

This volume contrasts the tone of the previous, for while the other was full of heavy drama, this volume centres around the everyday drama of high-school life, of characters trying to decide what to do with their futures. It was by far a more peaceful read and I enjoyed the almost mundane-ness of it (though nothing is ever really mundane in Fruits Basket). I'm currently in the process of moving house and reading this was a nice break in-between my current tasks :)

AH~ This volume was actually kind of peaceful. It wasn't as intense as the one before this. Well, if you don't count the part with Rin... that was pretty intense... and the parts with Kyo. XP But other than that, it only involved things happening at school, future worries, and Shigure being a devious little monster like always! (I must say, I love how evil he can get. It pleases me~ *Smirks*) I wasn't as "ROAR!!! DIE!!!" in this volume, which is good because... man, I thought I was going to lose it for a while. Do you know what it's like wanting to destroy something because everything you're reading is just pissing you off? Ugh! It's not fun. So I like that this volume was a lot more calm. Balances things nice and easy. *Nods*

Sensei! You are love! That's what you are. Thank you for not making this particular volume full of drama. I needed to rest after my outburst! XD Although... that part with Rin? EPIC~~~!!! I flipped out~ (More on that later.) You are aware that I am so hooked to what you write? What you create? You do realize I'm going to be stalking you for the rest of time, ne? As soon as I'm done with this series, I am definitely going to look into more works created by Takaya-sensei because she just has a very natural story-telling talent. Her designs are just so beautiful! I love the clothes she makes Rin wear especially. They are just sooooo sexy! Rin is sexy. It was nice seeing Sensei talk about herself again, too! She hasn't done that in a while. Of course, it's talking more about video games but I don't care! I happen to like video games and I like it more when she talks about them. Really gets animated! XD Maybe I should buy headphones, too... it might enhance the experience! XD

Favorite part of this book: RIN!!! Wah! How awesome! She's so tough, strong, kind (in her own way), and beautiful! Her hair! Her clothes! Her everything! Just completely fell in love with her... AND WITH HARU! ALL OVER AGAIN! XD The chemistry between these two people... well, in a word: HOT! I swear! These two are so good together you just squee to death! I know I did! I don't want to get too much into detail but know that it is awesome and you will freak and you will jump to the moon because it is THAT sexy! There's still a lot that we don't know about them yet. For example, Rin seems to be hurting in more ways then one. I wonder what could be bothering her... also, Haru is going through a lot of pain as well. *Flails* THEY SHOULDN'T BE!!! THEY ARE TOO GREAT!!! (Yet another review with not a lot of explaining, too much flailing, and just plain blahness) Sorry this is another one of those but... I seem to be hitting a snag because of just how much I love these two. It seems that the more I love something the more I suck at giving it a proper review... probably because I can't find anything to point out the bad... what? Whatever. HARU AND RIN ARE THE PERFECT COUPLE! There. That's done.

As for the other characters, not much happened really. However, with Kyo, BIG STUFF! Really big stuff! His relationship with Kagura was finally revealed. You know, the start of it all. And... it's disgusting... on Kagura's part. It leaves you feeling dirty and just not... happy. You really start to question Kagura's character back in volume six when you see Kyo's true form for the first time and in volume 12, you know why. Man, it's horrible. I still like her, in a way, but... just... no. *Sighs* I let you see for yourself. *Smiles faintly* It was kind of Kyo to still be there for her, in a sense. I love that boy. <3 Tohru is working so hard to help him and Yuki and everyone else in the Chinese Zodiac. I love how she went to Shishou for advice. Oh! And Hanajima has a crush on him! It's sooooo cute! XD That's not really a spoiler because it's not part of the main plot or anything. Just a crush. What else...? *Cracks up* Shigure and Mayu... my God! They are so hilarious! I loved how he started cheering when she put on that sour face! Priceless! I have a warm little place in my heart for them~ <3

This was such a cute volume. Even though some intense things happened, like for Haru, Rin, and Kyo, it felt a lot calmer than others. I like the pacing of this series. It doesn't through so much at you all at once. You don't get the feeling of being overwhelmed by it. I like that a lot. So, I say again, READ FURUBA! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!! I know I am soooooo glad that I decided to listen and pick up this manga! Because it is truly one of the great ones. *Flails* I'm so excited to see where this goes from here! I don't know what else is going to happen... and I'm nervous as hell because I want happy ending but damn it!!! I am sooooooo going to continue reading this! In fact, I'll start right now! Come! Come! Join me! *Flails*

I finished this book several weeks ago... whoops.

Anyways, I am very glad we finally got Kagura and Kyo to somewhat tell each other what was really going on in their relationship. That was for sure the highlight of this volume for me. Other than that there was nothing too noteworthy off the top of my head from this one that I could tell you right now as I am trying to remember all of he events that happened in this volume.

Tohru Honda’s got guts. I have to hand it to her to go through such measures just so she can play the hero to everyone’s eyes. Although, Tohru’s gesture can be seen as selfish but to me, it’s more of going by her motherly instinct to protect the people she loves, including and most especially Kyo.

Despite not getting much appearances on the series itself, Kagura Sohma isn’t just getting to me. While I can sympathize with her struggle on unrequited love towards Kyo, her acts of desperation is quite pathetic to see.

Kagura already knows that no matter how hard she tries to be the loving and caring partner to Kyo, he could never reciprocate it. As pitiful Kagura is from her current state, she needs to let him go and learn to accept that finding a new love is a better priority than chasing someone to no avail.

The Pig from the Sohma clan may not be aware of it, but the cause behind why she and Kyo’s relationship to adrift is due to her aggressive nature. Both couples may have temper issues, but Kagura is far worse compared to Kyo.

Compared to the younger Sohma relative, Kagura uses this trait to her advantage. With that, Kagura becomes manipulative and (physically) abusive to have the situation under her control, as seen in the previous volumes.

Other than Kagura, Hatsuharu’s getting some spotlight for this volume too. We’re shown another side of Haru that’s not often presented on this series until now. Who would’ve thought he could have a soft spot on the other members of the Zodiac too?

Another outstanding Fruits Basket volume! I was surprised to see Ritsu so happy when he gets up in the morning, and it makes me wish we got to see more of that side of him. On the first page of the first chapter of this volume, even though he wasn’t shown yet I was still able to guess that it was Ayame at their house by his lime and their reaction. That goes to show how distinct the personalities of the characters are, or at least Ayame’s personality. It’s a great detail that Tohru still has the bandage on from volume 11. Wounds take time to heal, but many stories seem to forget or ignore that. Kagura’s confession is so well done! It adds a lot to the character of both her and Kyo, and what other romance story has a character saying I don’t love you? Tohru’s lid is still on, and I wonder if/when she’ll be able to open it. All in all this volume is the usual mix of heartfelt with touches of funny.

Probably my favourite volume so far. Kagura's confession to Kyo and looking at their history was really good, and Kyo having calmed down so much really started to show in this volume. That said, the clouds are still well gathered, with Shigure positioned as a manipulator (what do people see in him?!) And both Tohru and Rin trying to break the curse. Still plenty of mysteries, but with the tone moving more serious and away from wacky comedy, the series is improving. Tohru accepting she also has things locked away was good too. Curious to know what happens from here, the halfway point!

Overall Rating: A to the cute power
Synopsis: Fruits Basket is a shōjo manga series created by Natsuki Takaya that follows the life of Tohru Honda. When the series begins, Tohru is living in a tent in the woods after being recently orphaned when her mother died in a car accident. Somehow, Tohru is able to remain optimistic despite all the shit she has had to go through.

While wandering through the forest she's living in, she runs across the house of the Sohma family. As it happens, Tohru goes to school with Yuki Sohma, who is known as the Prince, because of how fucking hot he is. Yuki and his cousin Shigure take pity on Tohru and invite her to live with them in exchange for doing the cleaning and cooking for them. Soon, Tohru learns that the Sohmas are hiding a terrible secret...they turn into cute animal versions of the zodiac if they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex that isn't also a Sohma. Things just get crazier when she meets more of the family.

Fruits Basket is the best kind of romance series, the kind with lots of crushes, but nothing overt, and interesting relationships (not necessarily the romantic kind). Take, for instance, when Kyo Sohma shows up. As I mentioned in the summary, the Sohmas all turn into cute versions of the zodiac when hugged by a member of the opposite sex. Yuki is the rat, Shigure is the dog, and Kyo is the cat. You may be thinking that there is no cat in the zodiac, and you would be right. However, there is a legend that says the cat would have would have been in the zodiac, if it had not been tricked by the rat into missing the induction feast. As a result, Kyo hates Yuki, and constantly tries to fight him. Unfortunately, for Kyo, he can't even land a decent hit on Yuki, let alone beat him up.

It's easy to love this series. The back story on the various members of the Sohma family is interesting (why does Kyo hate Yuki so much?) and trying to figure out which member of the zodiac new characters are is lots of fun (I love the Dragon's zodiac form). If you're looking for something light and fun to read, Fruits Basket is a good choice. Beware though, the series is 23 volumes long!

I'm reviewing this volume in the midst of falling asleep on my keyboard. And my first review nonetheless. This is my second or third time reading this volume. I just needed a little refresher, since I'm actually reading volume 14.

Typically, I don't like heroines who are overly kind and incredibly selfless. They annoy me since they never seem to have any flaws, making them seem less realistic. But that's not the case with Tohru. I like her and I find her simply adorable. But I also like her because, in this volume, we get to see she suffers as everyone else does. While visiting her grandfather, he says he'd like to see Kyoko and Katsuya, Tohru's parents, once again. Tohru remembers how her mother said something similar to that. From what I can infer of Tohru's memory, her father recently died and her mother absolutely distraught goes out, leaving Tohru by herself. I'm sure there's more to that memory and why it brings Tohru to tears.

Finding out Kagura's real feelings for Kyo finally cleared things up. Then there's Shigure. I think someone once called him an enigma. His family and his ex-girlfriend seem to know what a bad person he is. Even Uotani and Hanajima don't like him. I believe if your friends get a bad feeling about a guy, they're most likely right. I really do hope he is helping out Kyo, Yuki and Tohru. And finally, we won't know about Kyo's future until graduation.

All in all, I think this volume could've been a bit better and more exciting. I do, however, enjoy the little moments between Kyo and Tohru. They better end up together, or I'll most likely throw away all the volumes...NAH! I spent way too much time AND money collecting them to just waste them.

* contains spoilers *

Love this installment mainly because of what we find out between Kagura and Kyo. I totally didn't expect it, but now, upon reading it, it makes complete sense.

Kagura had always annoyed me a bit because she seemed two-dimensional, forever loving Kyo to the point it got really old and annoying. And then... we learn the reasons behind it, and everything turns around. NATSUKI TAKAYA I LOVE YOU. Kyo and Kagura playing together were cute... I loved learning about their childhood. My jaw dropped when I read Kagura say, "Compared to [you Kyo] I wasn't so bad after all. That's why I was with you. I was always looking down on you, Kyo-Kun." That quote, and when she said, "I was only chasing after you for myself," were the two best lines in the book.

And then Kyo thanked her for the times she played with him during their childhood. And he stayed by her and held her until she stopped crying. I love it.

Right from the start this manga had me hooked. How can you not like Tohru? She has to be one of the sweetest people on the planet. All the hopes of breaking the Sohma curse fall on her head. It was interesting to see the relationships grow and change throughout this series. Not only are the characters great, but the storylines were fantastic, although somewhat depressing at times. This is the one series that everyone should read. It was outstanding.

So the saga continues. I love the little details that tell so much. That is what works so well, the author clearly knows her characters and that comes out in really great interactions.

Love the pages between Kyo and Kagura. Sometimes we have friends like these - they aren't bad, simply flawed.

BOTTOM LINE: Love Kyo!
