The war is over, but Bruce Carter, now home and struggling to adapt to life as a normal citizen and husband after five years as a soldier, is easily persuaded to step back into the fight when the man he fought alongside asks for his help. However, when Bruce aids Daniel Best in the rescue of an injured soldier, he uncovers political secrets and lies that force him to question his role in the war, and whether he should believe the man with whom he trusted his life.
Questioning Orders was a unique look into the past, I’d have to guess in the 1940’s. It’s a really quick read featuring two men Bruce and Danny who find comfort with each other in harrowing times. There's quite a bit of action and political espionage. Overall, a good story, very enjoyable read. Well written, kept me engaged within the story.
This is a quick, immersive read— it works well as a short story, but I desperately want to read a longer version to spend more time with Bruce and his world and experiences. The storytelling is compelling: the narrative is woven through with suspense, chemistry, and just enough detail to keep things intriguing (a bit more world building would have been lovely, however). Bruce is a fascinating character who’s been through a lot and is clearly shaped by, and working through, his experiences. The dynamic with Danny is electric and fraught and easy to get caught up in. All in all, well worth checking out. 4.5 stars.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I really enjoyed the characters in this story and found the portrayal of Bruce's PTSD well done. His relationship with Daniel was compelling and I loved seeing them together. I love a good story of political machinations where characters are forced to figure out what is going on and who they can trust and I really hope the short taste of this we've gotten here from this author gets expanded into a longer book. I'd grab that in a second.
Very interesting rather short story. It seems to be set in an alternate universe around the time of WW2. The most interesting thing to me is that we often don't talk about m/m romance from that time, when it obviously existed. In spite if not really normally reading historical fiction, I really enjoyed this book.
A very unique well written short story of the effects of war and PTSD on the minds of those who have experienced it. The reality that MM relationships in all forms existed in the past and is nothing new. This story I imagine took place around World War 2. I received this short story as an Advanced Reader's Copy.
This is the story of Bruce and Daniel. Please read the trigger warnings. This is a very short story and I would have liked it to be much longer. The characters are well developed. The action makes this a fast paced read. Recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.
Minus one star because I wished it was longer. It could've been an amazing story. I wish there was a little more back story. The heat was low but it was great when it did happen. The action was high. The storyline was really good too. I really wish it had been longer because the story really was that good.
He is now out of the army and with his boyfriend but he is struggling to be a normal citizens. He will be asked for help and he is about to find out things he never expected to find out. What will he find out? What will he do? Can he get used to being out of the army? See where they will take you
This author did an amazing job establishing the characters and situation quickly. I enjoyed the political intrigue and action. Bruce and Danny are very relatable and engaging. The only fault is that it was too short!
