Rate this book
Twenty year old Melody is hiding out at her sister's house in California, along with her six month old son, Jake, until a private investigator finds them. She immediately packs up again and moves back to her home town of Clovis, New Mexico, where her mother and grandmother push her to leave town again and go to Logan, New Mexico and her grandmother's house at Ute Lake.
Melody is aware that the Clovis Police are looking for her and Jake so when a young, handsome deputy takes an interest in her, she runs from him.
When Deputy Ryan Baylor sees a beautiful blond and her baby coming out of the store he's staking out, he notices the fear in her eyes as she looks around her and wants to know what or who she's afraid of. Before he can get to her and ask her what's wrong, his older brother, Sheriff Wayne Baylor calls him on the radio to release him from stakeout duty. By the time he gets Wayne off the radio the blond has disappeared so he sets about trying to find her. When he sees her walking in his rear view mirror he starts to do a u-turn, but his middle brother, Deputy Tylor Baylor, asks him for help with an accident.
The next time Ryan sees the woman at the store he is determined to talk to her, but before he can walk from his patrol car to her truck, she gets scared and takes off, leaving him in posession of her cart of groceries. Frustrated, he starts asking at the store to see if anyone knows where the woman lives. He is told the general direction by the delivery boy and calls his off duty brother, Tylor, for help in locating the right house because she has hidden her truck away from the casual looker. Once they find her location, Tylor delivers her groceries and finds out her first name.
Now all Ryan has to do is find a way to talk to Melody, without her running away again, find out who she is hiding from, convince his pig-headed brother, Wayne, that she isn't just another pretty face and try to save her and her son from a madman out to take her son away and get rid of her. All of this, plus his regular deputy duties and getting ready for the fourth of July crowd at the popular state park, Ute Lake.
