I have really enjoyed the series up to now but this one really fell flat for me. I got to 20% (which is quite a bit for a book this long) but couldn't go on. So far the story had not really progressed at all. Also, it seems that the authors style had gotten so much more verbose, overly describing everything with very flowery language.

The story is still good and I will continue reading the series but this book felt like a big step back. Author randomly decided to write like he had to fill a word count and input every descriptive word he could think of. Many, many unnecessary descriptions in every imaginable way. Makes reading feel much more like a chore than the first 4 books.

VERBOSE. FLOWERY. DISAPPOINTING.

Seemingly every character action, every character thought, any item, or description of the setting—whether minor or major, crucial or inconsequential—all had to delay the purpose of the scene, or the point of a conversation, in order to “bely the author’s verbose verbosity, like a flowery garden, rustling in the evening winds amidst a summer solstice whose comforting rays of setting sunshine bathed them as a descending legion of celestial angels from the ocean-blue sky.”

This is where I may check out of the series—which is a damn shame. I don’t know what happened, Wisehart seems to have become a different author. I enjoyed the first four books in the series and even one or two of the Street Rats of Aramoor, but this one felt way off. It was slow and distracting. Not necessarily due to a slow story and slow progression (which still was slow but granted I couldn’t finish), but largely due to an insane amount of ridiculous descriptions on just about everything, making scenes—or even the smallest of actions—last unnecessarily long.

I got about 40% through and it couldn’t keep my attention. The moment I tried to immerse myself in the scene, I was thrust out of it, trying to piece together an onslaught of flowery descriptors.

Good series

Lots of rich character development, some unexpected love stories, and a few strong dark forces that seem indomitable. Recommended read

Of the 788 pages of book 5 of this series, ~300 of them could’ve been edited out. I’ve never read a book with SO MANY SIMILES. I enjoyed the first 4 books and was excited for this one but I can’t say I enjoyed it. It dragged with retelling the storyline, recounting characters, and superfluous descriptions. How many times did he write about so and so’s breath catching in their throat! I actually laughed at reading that so frequently. It also didn’t finish the story. Nothing wrapped up. I was disappointed in that especially if I have to endure another long winded book by the simile king.

The Verdict: A Bloated Bridge to the Next book

After thoroughly enjoying the first four books in this series, I found this latest book quite flat. What should have been an exciting progression felt like 70% setup and "filler" and only 30% plot progression. The author leaned heavily into flowery, overly descriptive prose that didn't add value to the story, making the pace feel sluggish and unnecessarily dense.

POV Problems and Pacing
The book suffered from having too many perspectives, many of which felt irrelevant. For example, Amarysia’s chapters didn't offer any new growth or information; her plotline could have easily been condensed into a single chapter from Dakaran’s point of view. Similarly, Ty’s plotline felt like pure filler until the meetup with Ferrin.
The most interesting arcs were of Ayrion and Adarra which suffered from poor pacing:
Ayrion: His segments were far too short.
Adarra: Her story felt rushed and forced. Specifically, the forced marriage plot for Aiden felt like a missed opportunity. Instead of exploring Adarra’s internal conflict, the author used it for shallow levity and comedy, which felt out of place.
Character Dynamics
I was particularly disappointed in the lack of development regarding the relationship between Narendi, Ty, and Lyessa. After the kidnapping and rescue in Book 4, I expected a deep dive into their relationship dynamics. Instead, it was glossed over. Lyessa feels particularly "plain" and underdeveloped compared to Narendi in my opinion.
Furthermore, the subplot of Ty teaching battle magic to a Council of Magic—people who have been practicing since before he was born felt jarring and logically odd, even if they lacked specific combat knowledge i don't see learning new magic easily.

Final Thoughts
For a book titled Blood of the Mountain, the actual "Blood Magic" plot was pushed to the very end and felt incredibly rushed. If the author had cut the unnecessary POVs, trimmed the descriptive fluff, and focused on the core magic system rather than forced comedic subplots, this could have been a 3 or 4-star read.

I love this series, but this specific book just didn't have the momentum to earn more than two stars.

A little disappointed...

I had really enjoyed everything written by this author until now. I felt like there were far too many similes and metaphors used to describe the details of the scenes, especially in the first half of the book. It was to the point that the story felt slow and tedious.
The book did get better in the second half. However, at about 90% through, one of the main characters gave a full (and some what lengthy) recap of his story that would have been better suited to the beginning of the book. Having it in the middle of the climax just felt jarring.
Overall, I really like the story. I just hope the next book does a better job telling it.

Disappointing

This author is an excellent writer. I pre-ordered this because the first books were excellent. But this isn't a story, it's a summary.
The first 2/3 are nothing but flowery prose to remind you of what happened in the earlier books. The only portions where anything happens, serve to move one group across the map, link up two other groups, just to have them sit down reminiscing for 20 pages.
The only portions that actually tell a story should have been included in the last book. I doubt it would have been more than 100-150 pages. The othe 600 odd pages were a waste of time.

So I'm about 80% into the book but it looks like it's a DNF.

I have read every single book by this author and the first 4 books of the aldoran now for the 2nd time. I'm invested as can be which makes this even harder .

I have no idea what happened but it reads like a completely different author. The language is beyond flowery to the point that it's unreadable. (Or unlistenable in my case) I swear there isn't a single straight forward sentence in the entire book. Every single action is stretched to about half a page of descriptives and similes.

Instead of "Tye woke up" you get this :
"Tye erupted from the tangled shroud of his bedding with the fervor of an apprentice wielder, snared by the siren call of forbidden lore rather than cradled by the restorative balm of slumber's gentle embrace. A cavernous yawn tore from his throat, a testament to the overnight hours, powered not by the peace of dreams, but by the relentless unraveling of mysteries locked within the weathered pages of his newly discovered grimoire."

Perrin ?

"Perrin rose from a slumber so profound it had left his limbs stiff as weathered Oak, the ache, born not of battlefield but of rare, unyielding rest that had tethered him to it's depths. His sleep had been a Chasm unmarred by dreams, its seamless Embrace, a Marvel that left him feeling somewhat revived.
A cavernous yawn cracked his jaw as he cast aside the heavy quilts, their warmth reluctance to release him"

I've been listening at double speed to get through but still. It's just too much , I can't find the story in all the useless fluff.

I hope the next book is "normal". I want to know the end. Just please go back to writing a good story. There is no need to make it into a shekspirian poetry novel !!!

I’m annoyed. I rarely DNF a book, but I just hit chapter 33, and I can’t move past a trope that the author has already used once, for the same character. The book was already stagnating, and now I’m expected to believe that the character didn’t learn from the same mistake the first time, and that his companions ALL (except one) went along with it, in spite of distrusting the entire situation. It’s absurd, and I haven’t hated a character choice in a book in decades!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the series thus far, and this was my second time reading through the whole series (just to refresh my memory). This really colors my opinion of the series, and
I can count on one hand the amount of books I’ve DNF’d in the past ten years, and this will be the third in the past twelve months. The other two were AI written books that I didn’t catch when I bought them. I might try to finish it, but completely ignore that character’s POV. The other characters haven’t completely been overcome by inane choices. Sure, they all benefit from plot armor, and I’m fine with that. I’m just not okay with a lack of character growth to further the story. It’s okay once, but not more than that!

Ive been really looking forward to this book since I've enjoyed all of the series so far.. but this one was my least favourite. It was quite uneventful on the whole. Felt like a filler. But I had one major grouse.
It would be really amazing if Michael just assumed we all have been reading these books. I've had to read a very detailed explanation of Ferrins journey at least 3 times now. It's absolutely annoying. There I was very excited to see the meeting of these 2 groups and hear Azreal's message finally delivered when I was forestalled by having to sit through another retelling.
Please just tell us Ferrin details his journey and we'll get . We'll understand. We were there for the whole journey. Its like the teacher said the essay should be 10,000 words or you'd fail. Sheeesh.

Ok looking at the other reviews I see it wasn't just me..other people have noticed.

Additionally, it seemed like the author wanted Adarra to explore her relationship with Jonas without her appearing to be an unlikeable bitch. So he made Aiden revert to being an awful coward despite his character growth in the previous books. Then randomly marrying him off. At least that's how it appeared.

More Invested With Each Book

To say that I'm more invested with each book sounds obvious right? Of course it does. The more you read; the more you learn...The more time you "invest". I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is the kind of story towards which I'm willing to devote more time than I have to. While reading Blood Of The Mountains before bedtime I'd often find myself thinking, "If I read for an hour more I can still get a solid six hours of sleep." For me, sleep is a precious commodity. Not easily sacrificed for any but the most worthy of endeavors.

I've also invested a lot of time into highlighting and noting points of interest on my kindle. Sometimes it is for a particularly witty or wonderfully descriptive turn of phrase. Sometimes to make a prediction or to wonder whether a decision made by one of the characters will influence a decision they must make in the future. It's a lot of fun actually. I recommend doing the same if you want a more immersive experience. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

The issue with any mid-epic-story book is that a LOT of storytelling needs to happen to get to "the good stuff" as you head towards a climax. It's why people tend to like The Fellowship Of The Ring and The Return Of The King but not The Two Towers. This is book 5 of a very long story and has moving pieces whose stories need to be advanced but aren't going to be completed by the end of 788 pages. So while it won't be my favorite Aldoran novel, it is still very good and worth reading as someone takes the tale in its entirety. It is NOT standalone by any stretch of the imagination, and it would be folly to approach it as such. While we do have a partial "series recap" as Ferrin is telling his tale later on in the book, it isn't nearly enough for a new reader to get the context behind the storylines and relationships as they have developed. So... start from the beginning and work your way through, but if you're the sort who doesn't want to read a series until it's done, then be patient a bit longer :-)

It was difficult to give this a 4-star rating. The story is very good, but I just can't stand the character Ty. He is not someone that I feel is the "hero" that the storyline portrays him to be. Sorry -- He really doesn't seem to move the story along at all. He is immature and (to me) drags things along.
At times, this book #5 seems to drag on and on, with lots of repeated narrative that just drags things along with no clear purpose.
Near the end of the book (not a spoiler -- just an opinion), some of the storylines were brought to a conclusion way too fast without a lot of development or reasoning -- they "just happened" and we moved on.
I would have liked to have more material provided about Ayrion and even Adarra. Hopefully, Book #6 (yes, there must be one in the future as the story has too many loose threads to be a complete saga will tie things up a bit more, and a lot have so many storylines and narratives going on.

Love the series, characters and their development, parallel running stories and am still very much invested on how this will all turn out. However, out of the entire series, plus street rats, this was the toughest one for me to get through. The author in their zeal for world building descriptions and capturing character thoughts and feelings - long parts of the book felt overly stretched out. Made me think more than once “get to the point! Let’s move on!”. For example, there was one chapter totally dedicated to Ty getting out of bed and trying to figure out how he was going to handle his day. Hopefully next one will have focused more on editing to not over do this again so we can quicken the pace of storytelling. The very last few chapters of course sucked me back in and got me wishing for more as soon as possible!

I would give the storyline a solid B. My issue with the book is that the author took every opportunity to provide a detailed recap on things that happened in previous books. This resulted in a lot of redundancy as each retelling was given by different characters. The result being a summary recapture of each storyline from beginning to end. While I can appreciate the author wanting to bring others up to speed, it makes for a very boring reading for those of us who have faithfully read every book up to this point. I estimate the retelling to be roughly 20% of the book. That's a lot of filler. My only other caveat is that due to this, the story lines moved along very slowly until the end of the book. The cliffhanger are intriguing and it's still worth a read. I do hope the next book is better or I may consider dropping the series.

Ancient powers awaken as fragile alliances begin to fracture across Aldoran.
On the Isle of Tallos, Adarra faces rising monsters and deadly feuds, forcing her to protect both allies and enemies. Ayrion, burdened by his heritage, struggles to secure peace as winter pushes his people toward desperate choices. In Easthaven, Ty uncovers forbidden magic that could either save his friends or destroy them, while Ferrin journeys east to honor a promise, finding danger and unexpected refuge along the way.
Blood of the Mountains continues the epic fantasy saga with high stakes, ancient magic, and lives shaped by impossible decisions.

Blood of the Mountains is a powerful continuation of The Aldoran Chronicles, raising both the emotional and epic stakes of the series. With multiple storylines unfolding across war, politics, and forbidden magic, the novel delivers rich world-building, high tension, and deeply human choices. Each character’s journey feels urgent and meaningful, blending action with moral complexity. This installment rewards longtime readers while showcasing the series’ growing depth, making it a must-read for fans of immersive, character-driven epic fantasy.

Riveting continuation of excellent series

Had a lot of problems putting this book down. Great characters dealing with challenging storylines. Loved the book, but almost rated it 4 stars due to so much dark times(depressing) with very little light times( happy) in the story. I guess I am someone who just need a break from all that darkness. It did get better towards the end.
One other thing… might be nice for the author to include a synopsis of the previous storylines/ characters to help the reader recall previous books in the series…

Did someone else actually write this book? I loved the rest of the books, but this one sounds like a totally different author and not in a good way. Almost like they were trying to write a cheesy Victorian novel. Way too many flowery words. There were a few times where they sounded out of context. It's like a pre-teenager who just discovered a thesaurus. How many descriptors do you need to say 'he slept later than he normally would?' Hopefully he'll go back to his own style in the next one.

So many great stories in one.

Wiseheart has done it again with his great storytelling.

It took me some time to get caught back up to date from the other novels in this series. Once that happened, I could not put this book down.

Wiseheart did not disappoint at all. His storytelling is always superb and this was no different.

Can't wait for book 6 when I can return back to this grand world of fantasy.

I really love this series and this book was amazing BUT holy cow the long winded descriptions were a little bit much.

There were times where I would look down and realize he had been describing how something looked or a situation setting for the last 5-10 minutes.

Still will finish the series but I felt like he was trying to get to a certain word count vs just telling the story. I get that some settings needed to be described but holy cow.

A Great Read, Just a Bit Too Descriptive

I really enjoyed this book. The plot is incredibly engaging, the characters are well-developed, and the overall story is fantastic. It truly kept me hooked from beginning to end.
My only critique is that the author tends to overdo the descriptions. At times, the lengthy details about the scenery and surroundings slowed down the pacing of an otherwise excellent story.

Michael I really liked this book, and I know what you are doing by bringing all the characters together, but at times your descriptions are overly expansive. But I am so looking forward to the next one, so much going on and about to explode.can’t wait for you to bring it all together

The plot is intricate, but the author overdoes it on descriptions and recounting the story. And I’m unsure how 700 pages later half the main characters are right where they were at the beginning. The redeeming quality is that the political intrigue mixed with unique magical gifts makes for just enough to make me want to keep reading.

Full of wonder

This book has unlocked many secrets yet leaving the reader to more mysterious wonder and questions. Full of adventure and suspense that the reader could not put down. One recommendation for the author is to complete the series in the next book otherwise it will become too long as a series and loose interest as a whole.

I'm about 15% into the book, and I'll already rating it a 2. Regardless of how the story turns out, the writing style has changed drastically, it's absolutely painful to read which for me, has ruined the book, regardless of how the storyline goes. I'm not sure I'll even be able to finish it to be honest.

I absolutely loved the first 4 books in this series (I read them a second time, just to be ready for this book). I also loved the Street Rats series by the same author. The change in writing style ruined this book for me. I am 25% in and am seriously considering not finishing it (almost never do). Horrible disappointment!

Such a great story! Feels like coming home after the three-ish year wait. I’ve enjoyed the world that Michael Wisehart has created from book one. I am along for the journey, and though I don’t cherish the wait, it will definitely be worth it!
