Sabrina always dreamed of becoming a professional musician alongside her twin brother Alex – until his sudden death shattered everything. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, she seizes her last chance to attend the prestigious Boston Music College, even if it means severing ties with her parents and charting her own path in life.
Struggling to move forward without Alex, Sabrina navigates her first semester, where she meets River, a famous singer-songwriter teaching one of her courses as a visiting artist. What begins as an unlikely friendship quickly deepens into something more, but Sabrina isn’t the only one carrying the weight of the past.
River knows all too well that love is not to be trusted. He already has everything he thought he recognition, wealth, and the power to have any woman he desires. But is that really enough?
As ambition and old wounds collide, Sabrina and River must confront their pasts and decide whether love is worth the risk or if some scars run too deep.
Laura Lo Sapio is a Czech-Italian author and music producer. Based in Spain, she co-founded Yamaha Music School Valencia and Sound Vanguard, a music-for-film studio behind projects for Netflix and Amazon. Her debut novel, Nothing Left but Silence, blends her love of music and literature. Fluent in four languages, Laura brings her international background into contemporary romance that explores trauma, healing, and the blurred lines of morality.
This was such a romantic and cute read — but the grief storyline is what really got me.
I loved how Sabrina gets all the good things — love, music, connection — and then out of nowhere her brother’s voice cuts in. It’s gutting, but in a very real way. Grief doesn’t disappear, it just sits alongside the joy, and the book handled that balance so well.
River is basically my perfect MMC — tortured, music star, teacher, emotionally layered, fully realised. You honestly get more of his backstory than hers, which worked for me. The international cast (Prague / Spain / Boston) was a big win, and the found family at uni was lovely.
The second half was a bit rushed and the writing occasionally clunky, but the emotional payoff was worth it. And Sabrina’s arc? Loved it. No tantrums, no dramatic spirals — just a woman recognising her limits, taking the good she’s been given, and choosing herself with maturity and clarity.
Also. The Alanis Morissette Thank You video reference? Elite behaviour.
For the music girlies, the millennial grunge lovers, and anyone who likes their romance with heart, spice, and emotional intelligence.
Thanks to The Book Guild, NetGalley and Laura Lo Sapio for the ARC!
So happy i got selected to read the ARC ✨ The author's words captured both the essence and magic of music, creating a truly magical story. I really enjoyed the love story of Sabrina and River, the way he helped her rediscover herself and encouraged her to chase her dream and supported her all the way through. The characters were well written. Love it SO MUCH 💜🎶🎤
I usually don’t pick up books that revolve around music/singers or music schools, because a lot of them end up feeling unrealistic. But before requesting this one, I read a bit about the author and realized she actually knows what she’s talking about when it comes to music. That convinced me to step out of my comfort zone, and I’m glad I did.
I really, really liked Sabrina. She’s dealing with so much; grief, survivor’s guilt, family issues, confidence struggles, but she grows beautifully throughout the story. She starts in pure survival mode and slowly blossoms into someone strong, self-assured and ready to live her life the way she deserves.
Now,about River… I loved how supportive he was of Sabrina, how he helped her heal and find her confidence again. I liked how he called her Violet, like this was a little secret just between them. And while all this was awesome, and despite their age gap (him being older) most times I felt like Sabrina was the more mature one aaand I clapped when she called River out or handed him his ass a few times. I'm very glad he caught up by the end though. We started with "man-boy-ish" River that had no clue what to do with all his feelings, and we ended up with real man River who had no problem to tell Sabrina everything he's feeling. Yay :D ^^
The music school setting added a great layer to the story. It wasn’t overwhelming or overly technical, but it grounded the book in a believable way. Spice level: around a 3/5 (there was one scene that made me cringe a tiny bit, I mean... it’s 2025, but oh well). Pacing-wise, everything flowed naturally.
Overall, I think this was a very strong debut. Emotional and beautifully written. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5★)
I've just finished reading an ARC of Nothing Left But Silence and enjoyed it a lot. I really felt for Sabrina as she was falling in love while dealing with the feelings of loss and guilt.
I would recommend this book to anyone and sill definitely be rereading many times.
Nothing Left but Silence by Laura Lo Sapio is an emotional and engaging read that really drew me in. I especially loved the setting, Boston and New York were both vividly described and added so much atmosphere to the story.
I found myself completely rooting for the couple, invested in their journey and growth. What stood out most was how they faced their pasts without letting old pain define their future, which made their story feel hopeful and satisfying. A heartfelt novel that I would highly recommend.
Thank you to The Book Guild for my ARC copy of this book.
Nothing Left but Silence by Laura Lo Sapio is a novel dealing with loss and grief, the drive to accomplish ones dreams, and personal growth, all topics that are heavy when coinciding with one another. However, I didn't personally click with this story like I thought I would.
As someone who has experienced familial loss through the same way as the FMC experiences, someone who has abandonment issues, and a partner who is a producer and composer, I felt this book lacked a lot of the emotional depth that I expected and craved.
The characters fell a little flat for me as I felt there was a lot to be desired from their personal growth through hardships that did or could have happened. Generally, aside from a few moments, both main characters felt surface-level to me, if that makes sense. I found them kind of dull, especially River, who is a celebrity.
River is someone with a generalized reputation that I felt wasn't really capitalized on. We discovered the situation he came from, but didn't receive much else. It was understood that he had commitment issues, but I didn't feel this was utilized enough to be impactful. Out of all the characters, his was the one I felt the least attached to.
Sabrina had a lot of potential as a FMC with her history and trauma, plus the issue with her parents, but again, most of these issues were briefly talked about but not really developed to a point where it made her character feel relatable. I felt she was grieving, as she should have, for most of the book but nothing ever came from it which was a bit disappointing.
Compared to what I'm use to reading, this felt very short and rushed in some areas. While the book's general timeline consists over the course of a four to five months, the main catalyst of the book and the solution were smashed into two chapters at the very end, which felt very unfulfilling and sudden. I felt there were too many loose ends or shortened plotlines that could have definitely served better as a dual POV with more development and turmoil between the characters and both of their circumstances.
Overall, it wasn't for me, but people who may have not experienced these direct things may enjoy it a bit more! Thank you NetGalley and Laura Lo Sapio for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I devoured this book in one sitting and I have zero regrets. ZERO! Sabrina is still reeling from the loss of her twin brother 2yrs ago, and even after intense therapy she is struggling to actually live life knowing that he's gone while she's doing what they had always dreamed of doing together. She doesn't feel worthy of her chance because she thinks she's not good enough without him, and without the support of her parents, she lacks the confidence to give her all.
River Evans is a famous singer-songwriter, and as an alum of BMC, he's spending the semester teaching a few master classes and guest teaching in a few others. He initially meets Sabrina outside the emergency exit door after his concert when she's trying to calm down a panic attack after his concert. After he calms her down, he's instantly intrigued, and they soon find themselves running into each other more and more, while they're friendship turns to.. something else. However, River has his own demons after growing up in the foster care system, and never lets anyone too close. What follows is a deeply personal, emotional look at the inner struggles of grief, loss, and moving on.
I loved this book. The grief storyline is so well written, and seeing the personal growth Sabrina makes by the end of the book gives a feeling of palpable relief. And River?? He may seem calm and collected on the outside, unreadable and maybe even stoic to some, but he melts for Sabrina every time. You discover his soft side, his unwavering support for those he cares about, his humility and gratitude for everything he has. "It occurs to me that, in the end, even though River has accomplished all his dreams, he is still that broken little boy. A boy who is now celebrated by millions but continues to wander the world alone." that hurt my heart so bad. He was frustrating at times--in a way that I admittedly can completely relate to--but he had my whole heart. 10/10 recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, Beyond The Books PR, and the author for allowing me to read and review this wonderful book.
She’s chasing a dream haunted by loss. He’s built a life where feelings don’t get in the way…
Our FMC, Sabrina, moves from Prague to America to pursue what was meant to be her and her twin brother’s lifelong dream: studying at BMC. What sets this story in motion is the heartbreaking reality that Alex is no longer here, and she must face this journey alone. From the beginning, you feel the weight of self-doubt and the toll grief can take.
Enter MMC, River Evans, the million dollar selling tortured artist. River carries his own secrets and a troubled past that has shaped many of his choices. Naturally, the two connect, bonding over shared trauma and unspoken pain.
At its core, this story is a testament to the power of music and finding your place with the right people (hello, found family, which I absolutely loved). Those who truly understand you can offer light at the end of even the darkest tunnel.
This is a deeply character-driven story, with both MCs feeling well-rounded, authentic, and relatable. Despite everything they’ve endured, their compassion, care, and capacity for love remain stronger than their trauma. This isn’t a simple boy meets girl romance, it’s so much more. A slow burn handled tastefully, focusing on self-growth, mutual respect, and appreciating one another as people and artists.
Grief is one of the most powerful elements of this story. Its exploration - the guilt, sadness, fleeting happiness - felt raw and honest. Grief doesn’t disappear; you learn to live alongside it, not run from it, even in moments of joy. What matters most is how you heal and how it reshapes you.
For a debut novel, Laura’s writing is notably confident. Tender, bittersweet, deeply emotional, and fast-paced, you’ll fly through it. Her background in the music industry and Boston shines through beautifully.
Ultimately, this is a story about love, loss, and the realization that silence is far more powerful than it seems.
Thank you so much to Laura, InstaBookTours & The Book Guild for sending me a copy.
My Review: Nothing Left but Silence by Laura Lo Sapio is a contemporary romance novel. It was released on 1/28/26.
About the Book: "Sabrina always dreamed of becoming a professional musician alongside her twin brother Alex – until his sudden death shattered everything.
River knows all too well that love is not to be trusted. He already has everything he thought he needed: recognition, wealth, and the power to have any woman he desires. But is that really enough?
As ambition and old wounds collide, Sabrina and River must confront their pasts and decide whether love is worth the risk "
In My Own Words: Life, loss, and love merge, allowing two people to find a new rhythm together.
My Final Say: This novel has earned a golden heart rating.
The story went deep for me on the emotional side of things. The echoes of Alex's voice and his influential presence are what did it for me. I loved the very real way the author addressed grief and how each person in the family dealt with it. There was a rawness present that I understood.
River and Sabrina had a connection from the beginning. Watching their relationship unfold was so easy. The growth of both leads and the direction of movement that needed to happen came in a way that allowed real actualization.
I liked the supporting cast of characters. They were colorful and interesting.
I will revisit this story often. The notes still linger.
Other: Readers who enjoy music-themed, slow burn romances that get real will love this book.

Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (The Book Guild), and to NetGalley. Thank you for providing access to a digital ARC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. It was a pleasure to review this work of fiction. I look forward to reading more from this writer.
Laura Lo Sapio has absolutely altered my brain chemistry with some of the quotes from this book! I LOVED Nothing Left but Silence. It was truly such a complex and deep romance story that dove into love beyond just the standard romantic love. It highlighted what it means to love a sibling and the pain left behind when you lose the place to put that love.
The book opens with Sabrina bickering with her twin brother Alex, only for the author to reveal that Alex died several years ago. Sabrina is leaving the Czech Republic and her stable job as a music teacher to go to the US and study music against her family’s wishes, but that was her and Alex’s dream–the original plan before he died.
Sabrina was the songwriter, and Alex was the performer, so when she got to school, she was struggling to write and perform, and hiding the loss of her brother because she couldn’t bear to talk about him. That is, until River waltzes in.
River, the famous singer-songwriter and guest teacher at the university, who also happens to be the person who calmed her down after a song-induced panic attack at his show, pushes her out of her comfort zone, forcing her to embrace her own talent and face the loss of her brother.
As River and Sabrina get to know each other, the romance between them blossoms, but both of them have complicated histories, and he is still a professor, so can this even go anywhere, or are they doomed to remain student and teacher?
The romance between River and Sabrina was a tasteful slow burn, and I really appreciated how much they both cared for each other as people, outside of their romantic relationship, they prioritized making sure the other person felt validated and appreciated.
Overall, a wonderful story with beautiful writing. Thank you to Netgalley and The Book Guild for giving me an eARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
This is an impressive debut from Laura Lo Sapio, a love story set at a prestigious Boston music college.
Sabrina and her twin brother Alex shared the same dream of becoming professional musicians. After her brother’s shocking death, she battles her feelings of grief and guilt as she makes the move from Prague to America that the twins hoped to do together.
At a concert in Boston, she meets the famous musician River Evans, who then starts teaching on Sabrina’s songwriting course. They connect over their love of music and their shared trauma in their pasts.
Whilst Sabrina can’t help herself falling in love even if she gets hurt, River insists on keeping a distance to protect himself. (Which was extremely annoying at times with his mixed signals - I felt for Sabrina! 🤣)
Against the really cool backdrop of the music college campus (maybe based on Berklee?), Nothing Left But Silence is a very character-driven story of grief and overcoming self-doubt in a tough industry. Sabrina finds strength in River to work through her grief and feelings of not being good enough without her brother, and finish the song they were writing together.
And the love story was absolutely 🔥 (even though River annoyed me and was a bit cringe but I kept reminding myself that this is what boys in their 20s are like 🤣)
I loved that Laura herself is a music producer as well as a writer, and she did go to music college in Boston. This really shone through in the descriptions of the campus, with its practice spaces, party/jams and the cosy coffee shop and bookstore. I really felt like I was immersed in the college life!
Music was everything to Sabrina and her brother Alex. They wrote songs together, performed together, and although their parents weren’t the most supportive, they dreamed of having a music career.
All of this ends when Alex dies. After losing her other half, Sabrina doesn’t know how to continue chasing their shared dream or write songs without Alex by her side, and she almost gives up. But when she’s accepted for a music degree at a university her and Alex have always hoped of going to, she decides to give music one last chance. And it’s there that she meets the very successful and popular musician River Evans, and the two make an unlikely connection.
The thing I liked most about this book was Sabrina’s development throughout the story. Her grief wasn’t something the author mentioned one time and forgot about, it kept coming back to her constantly and felt very real. It was easy to connect to Sabrina’s personal thoughts and challenges, and seeing her overcome her fears to chase what she wanted was really uplifting.
I did feel like the romance plot and River’s character could have been developed a little more, though: I didn’t feel the same connection to their story as I did about Sabrina’s personal journey. The author did great in trying to make River more than a stereotypical, one-dimensional character, but I would have loved him even more if his character had a little bit more depth.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book! It has a good pace that makes it feel easy and relaxed to read. And while I thought the romance could have been improved, it’s still a good read and the main character and her story is awesome.
This book had my attention from the first chapters. Meeting Sabrina at her most vulnerable moment of life from the first chapter. We see her taking a decision to attend the most prestigious college for musicians in Boston (BMC) in an attempt to fulfil her promise to her twin brother after he is gone and to prove to her parents that this is not just a hobby but an actual career.
Alex passed away in a tragic way and this leads Sabrina to Boston. New life, new friends, new adventures and potentially a love story to unfold. She is determined to go through her life without her parents' help, not that she really had it in the first place.
In this new life she meets some good friends who pull her slowly out of her bubble and bring her to see her own self. In her first days in BMC she was pushed to attend a party by one of her friends. That’s when she meets the male character of the book River Evans. He is famous, successful, handsome and her music teacher.
River has his own struggles and story to tell, we read about it further into the book. He is complex and swears that he doesn’t do relationships. However, the Sabrina or as nicknamed by him Violet is different. Sabrina and her magical voice find the way into his heart.
I enjoyed it a lot, it only took me a week to finish it which as a slow reader says a lot about the book. I highly recommend it as it is heartbreaking with Alex’s fate and Sabrina’s life going on without her brother but yet is hopeful because she finds meaning in her music with the help of her friends and River.
This book was the one I think I was looking for so long. I loved this book so freaking much and I can't believe that it finished so soon. I loved each and every part of the book. The way I have smiled, cried, giggled in some of the scenes.
River Evans this guy the MMC I fell in love with him so freaking much. I just couldn't stop smiling whenever he called her Violet. This nickname made me cry so much(in happiness). How do I find someone like him, he took care of her so much, even when there was an argument sort of thing. The way he helped her during her breakdown and always be there for her whenever she needs him. This guy is love and I loved him so muchh.
Sabrina Fialová this girl has my heart. She stood for her dreams, struggling through everything but yet did not give up even after all the problems. Her love for River was something which I adored so freaking much. Her passion for music, every time she did something always remembering her brother. I love this girl so much in the book, her maturity, her belief in River, her trust, her love everything was written so well.
There were so many scenes in the book which made me love this story so much. Their chemistry, their love for music, their care for each other. Being in love yet denying it so many times. Also the side characters were also so good in the book they were always there for Sabrina and tried to cheer her up whenever she was over doing everything. I wish that I could just read this book for the first time again and experience all the emotions once again
This was such a cute romance read for me. The story follows Sabrina, who has always wanted to be a musician alongside her brother Alex until his sudden death. She's completely shattered until she gets a full scholarship to attend Boston Music College.
Our FMC, Sabrina is dealing with loss, guilt, grief and family issues. It felt like a personal win to see her achieve her and her brother's dream! I was always worried about this girl not eating and fainting😣 but so glad River, our MMC was there for her. River Evans is just so perfect🤌🏻 Despite being a renowned musician and often labelled as "rude", he was really sweet to Sabrina. He was supportive and always taking care of her. He pushed her to be the best version of herself. Although I am not a huge of age gap romance, I liked the chemistry between these two. Their age gap is 8 years btw. Both the main characters' backstory was really well-done. The writing was simple & easy. The first half of the book was slow but the second half felt too rushed. Nevertheless, this is a very strong and impressive debut for the author.
Overall, if you are looking for a simple cute music romance, this is the one
💜what to expect/tropes: 🎶music romance 🎙celebrity × non celebrity 🎼visiting artist teacher × student 💟age gap ✨️found family
This is a beautiful and emotional story about love, loss, and finding yourself again. Sabrina’s dream of becoming a musician, grief, guilt, growth and the brave decision to attend Boston Music College on her own already makes this story special. At the beginning, she is broken and unsure, but chapter by chapter, we see her slowly rediscover her voice, her strength, and her purpose. Her journey feels honest and relatable. River, artist and famous singer-songwriter in the story. He may seem confident and successful, but he carries his own pain and trust issues. Watching him slowly open up to Sabrina is both gentle and heart-touching.
The story flows smoothly and keeps you engaged without feeling rushed. The backstories on both sides are emotional and well written, making the connection between Sabrina and River feel natural.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the book is the music, the singing scenes and included lyrics add so much depth and emotion, making the story feel alive.
Overall, this is a sweet, comforting, and slightly emotional read. It has a familiar, cute, slightly cliché romance vibe, but it’s done with heart. I truly enjoyed every bit of it and felt happy and satisfied by the ending.
So grateful to have been a part of the ARC team. This story wrapped itself around my heart and refused to let go, I genuinely couldn’t put it down and ended up finishing it in just two days.
Nothing Left but Silence is an emotional exploration of grief, healing, and finding the courage to move forward when your heart is still anchored in the past. Sabrina’s journey felt incredibly real. Watching her step outside her comfort zone, take a leap she never thought she could, and still carry the weight of missing Alex was both heartbreaking and beautiful. Her grief wasn’t rushed or romanticized, it was quiet, heavy, and honest.
And River Evans… truly the kind of character you don’t forget. Gentle, patient, and endlessly kind, he becomes a safe place for Sabrina, a mentor who helps her rediscover her strength and believe in herself again when she can’t. Their connection felt healing in the most tender way.❤️🩹
I’m so happy I got to meet Sabrina and River through these pages, and I’m incredibly proud of Laura Lo Sapio for such a moving debut. This is a story about love, loss, and the silence that follows, and how sometimes, healing begins right there.🕊️
Nothing Left but Silence by Laura Lo Sapio ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What an absolute gem of a read! Laura Lo Sapio has crafted a beautifully lyrical story that perfectly balances the heavy weight of grief with the uplifting power of music. I was completely swept away by Sabrina’s journey as she navigates her first semester at Boston Music College while honoring the memory of her twin brother, Alex. The emotional depth in this book is staggering—it manages to be both heart-wrenching and hopeful all at once, making it impossible to put down. The highlight for me was the captivating student/teacher dynamic between Sabrina and River. River is such a complex, multi-layered character; as a famous singer-songwriter and visiting artist, he initially seems to have it all, but his own past wounds make his connection with Sabrina feel so raw and authentic. Their "unlikely friendship" blossoms into a palpable, high-tension romance that had me rooting for them from the very first chapter. If you love character-driven stories with a touch of spice and a lot of heart, this is a must-read for 2026!
10/10 Would recommend this book to all family and friends.
Nothing Left But Silence was a good read. It's a popstar × aspiring singer-songwriter romance. It follows Sabrina and River. River is a popstar assisting classes at Boston Music College. Sabrina is a wannabe songwriter trying to find her place since her twin brother died. She wasn't going to go to college but when she got a last chance to attend Boston Music College, she goes. She meets River after attending one of his concerts. He helps her calm down during her panic attack.
Sabrina and River have something special and it's up to them to go after it. She is dealing with her grief and he encourages her every step of the way to keep going. He believes in her and her talent. It's a cute romance with a heavy theme.
For me, the writing style was too dense. There were long paragraphs and long chapters. I feel like it could've been broken up a bit. A good chunk of the book was Sabrina doubting herself and his feelings. Sabrina reminds me of myself, so I was able to connect with her but it just dragged on and on. I'm glad River was her constant encouragement and helped her achieve her dreams.
The amount of times I happy squealed in my head while reading this is absolutely insane. I also found myself getting so mad when the characters couldn’t see what was right in front of them! But I fell in love with this story and the characters so quickly. When I initially started reading, I was getting major Raise Your Voice vibes, and as a Hilary Duff fanned millennial, I was more than thrilled!
Sabrina and River have to be one of my favorite romance couples (at this point in time… I’m only human and a romance nerd 😉). They make you believe anything is possible. I couldn’t get enough, and honestly? I was really sad when I hit the last pages. I wanted more. Their story didn’t feel “done” to me, and I think that’s because I could read about their lives forever.
I think the author left the story in a place to be picked up on later, but also in a place where it could be done. I’d LOVE a whole BMC series with stories from everyone. I could definitely get sucked into Bela, Rodrigo, Conner, and Nyra’s storylines. Just maybe pepper in some updates on my favorite couple. 😏
So tell me it was all worth it in the end You say “yes of course it was” And I wish I could say the same But there is nothing left but silence
Oh, there is nothing left but silence Nothing left but silence
A beautiful combination of music, grief, love & finding yourself.
The story is character driven as 'Violet' battles her grief for the loss of her twin brother whilst trying to go after their dream of a life in music. Grief appears when we least expect it & in many different forms, the author portrayed this so well within Violet. The writing was almost lyrical, I could truly feel every emotion that Violet was feeling.
River is the perfect MMC. He's faced such hardtimes however his strength & determination shine through. River had many layers to his personality which Violet managed to break through so we got to see the tenderness within his hard exterior.
I think violet & River were really good for each other, helping each other heal & see different perspectives so there was no doubt in my mind that a romance wouldn't blossom.
The tension between the two MCS was Palpable, steam was literally coming off the pages 😳 it was cute, sweet but also quite spicy which levelled out the playing field.
I adored this story & wish there was more from Violet & River.
Thank you to InstaBookTours the author & publisher for a copy of the book.
I love books when they revolve around college, music and consuming ambition. The unexpected death of Sabrina's twin brother, Alex, wrecks her hopes of becoming a professional musician. Crushed by loss and regret, she decides to give it a final try at the famous Boston Music College, cutting her relationship with her parents in order to follow her own path. She meets River there, a well known singer and songwriter who is a visiting artist and instructor. They both have troubled pasts, yet their unexpected bond develops into something more meaningful. The setting of the book was my favorite feature 🥰 I liked how the environment surrounding both the leads was so creative. I loved how Sabrina's development both as a person and as a musician was shaped by the academic setting. Both the leads, Sabrina and River very likable. Although their relationship felt a bit rushed, it felt emotional because of their shared love of music and parallel healing journeys!✨
Thank you Beyond the Books PR and Laura Lo Sapio for the ARC <3
🥀Have you ever read a book that felt like home? Like a journey you feel so close maybe your sacrifices healing journey might be different but still you feel everything in your heart...that is the kind of book this is... from all the tragic things Alex went through to healing journey of Sabrina his twin sister from the collapse of their dreams to her choosing to go to Boston all by herself just to make her brother's dream come true a dream to become a musician..and there she finds people who heal her takes her out from that trauma slowly and gradually and life then gifts her with River - a superstar....who has his own traumas and together they build a life...River who was always in delusion that he will never fall in love falls in love with his "Violet" yes that's what he calls her "Violet". The story shows how slowly we heal from wounds and yet still we the people who have left us live somewhere in our hearts....it's all about a journey we take and people we meet which decides our healing path.
Twins Sabrina and Alex Fialova had dreams from the age of eight of making music, Alex singing and Sabrina songwriting. Both wanted to move from the Czech Republic to attend the Boston Music college with a scholarship. But at 21 Sabrina goes there alone. Here she meets River Evans, a player of music and, to some extent, life. Tall, dark brown and handsome he is both musical and desirable.
This is a great debut novel, that had me engaged from the start. I loved the sentence “Songs can bear so much more weight than real life.” Music is important in so many people’s lives and relationships and this is portrayed well in this book, through the twins, the college, the music students and of course River. It is a book about pursing your dreams, never giving up, trusting and believing in others and yourself. It also shines a light on childhoods - care givers who step up and those who don’t. I loved the cover - the colour and the shiny violets (read the book to discover their significance). Look closely to see the guitar. A very enjoyable read.
What an absolute gem of a read! Laura Lo Sapio has crafted a beautifully lyrical story that perfectly balances the heavy weight of grief with the uplifting power of music. I wasn't sure what I expected for this book but wow!
It centres around a young woman who lost her brother whilst they were working towards their dream of being musicians. She would write the songs and her brother would sing. And then her world crumbled.
Sabrina decided to take the full scholarship her and her brorher secured before the offer ran out. This left her with an overful schedule and a really difficult time where she didn't know how she was going to get through it. But slowly she met people along the way. She even found a love interest! Someone who may change her whole life, if she let him.
Whilst this book broke my heart, it also made it so full whilst seeing Sabrina grow into the Violet she was meant to be.
If you want a book that will make you laugh and cry and everything in-between, this is for you. I hit a reading slump before picking this book up and I am so glad I did! Totally different to my usual reads so I really was surprised just how much I liked it! 3am came around a bit too quickly a couple nights though hehe
Some dreams don’t die, they just learn how to hurt quietly. 🎶💔
This story shattered me in the softest way possible.🌫️🤍 Sabrina’s grief feels raw, real, and deeply personal. Losing her twin brother wasn’t just losing family it was losing the other half of her dream, her music, her anchor.🖤🎼 Watching her choose herself, even when it meant walking away from everything familiar, was heartbreaking and empowering at the same time.🌱✨
River, on the other hand, is the definition of emotionally unavailable but intriguing.🕶️🔥 Fame, talent, and success built his walls brick by brick, and yet…Sabrina slips through the cracks without even trying.🎤💔 Their connection grows slowly woven with shared silence, late-night music, and unspoken pain and that made it hit even harder. 🌙🎶
What I loved most is how this book doesn’t rush healing or romance.
If you love: 🎶 music-filled stories 💔 grief that feels real 🔥 slow-burn emotional romance 🖤 broken characters finding each other
This one will stay with you long after the last page.📖🌌
| "You don't need anyone else to believe in you. You only need to believe in yourself."
Nothing Left but Silence is a deeply moving and engaging story about two broken souls who find solace in each other through their shared love for music. Their connection doesn’t feel rushed or artificial—it grows quietly, shaped by loss, longing, and unspoken pain. What truly stands out is how real the grief feels. It is raw, heavy, and lingering, just like grief in real life. The author captures the way silence can ache, how music can become a refuge, and how love can slowly stitch together what loss has torn apart.
This book doesn’t just tell a love story—it makes you feel it. It sits with you, hums softly in your chest, and reminds you that sometimes healing begins not with words, but with understanding and shared silence. It’s hard to believe this is a debut—the storytelling is confident, immersive, and beautifully handled.
In Nothing Left but Silence, Laura Lo Sapio delivers a deeply emotional music romance centered on grief, ambition, and the fragile hope of loving again. The story follows Sabrina, a gifted musician devastated by the sudden death of her twin brother, Alex. Determined to honor their shared dream, she enrolls at a prestigious Boston music college, even if it means breaking away from her family. What unfolds is a slow-burn college romance layered with loss, survivor’s guilt, and artistic pressure. When she meets River, a famous singer-songwriter and visiting professor, their connection grows from shared musical understanding into something more intimate. But this is not a typical celebrity romance trope. River carries his own emotional scars, making this story as much about healing as it is about love. Readers looking for a grief-centered romance novel, a musician love story, or an emotional contemporary romance will find Nothing Left but Silence especially compelling.
ARC Reading Review ✨ First 3 chapters I genuinely didn't expect much because the pace was okay and I wasn't that connected but throughout the book there is such a development with the characters!
I'm so invested in characters like Connor, Bela, Rodrigues and want to know more from their perspective! Would definitely look forward to their stories as well
River is so Book Boyfriend Coded. I love the chemistry between Sabrina and River, like how they went to being each other's healing spaces. Honestly the last few chapters had me tear up 🥹
So much Sabrina felt after Alexa's death and so much she held within and woosh came River, healing her little by little and making her realize what matters is her goal and growth. Love how she went from I can't sing I'm not good enough to confidently opening shows with River in his tour.
