Before the Streetlights Come On

Rate this book
Ellie, Sloan, Courtney, and Shy have been friends since they were teenage girls, and they have seen each other through many seasons of womanhood.

They are now entering their 40s, and they have experienced everything together. They have gossiped over their first kiss. They have jumped bi$%@$ and been jumped on. They’ve survived college. They’ve been each other’s bridesmaids. They’ve consoled each other through divorces. They’ve experienced childbirth together. They have even done drive-bys when trying to catch cheating boyfriends. The one thing they’ve learned over the years is that good friends will see you through the rain until the sun shines again.

As mothers, wives, and career women, it hasn’t been easy for them to stay connected, but when the holidays roll around it’s the perfect excuse for their foursome to reunite. Friendsmas, is the occasion and Ellie is returning home to celebrate. When the reunion opens old wounds, they are forced to face one another and to also look in the mirror and face themselves.

Before The Streetlights Come On, is a book of true friendship. When the men in their lives switch up. When their children act up. When their jobs are fucked up. When the universe seems like it’s cutting up; Ellie, Sloane, Courtney, and Shy tap into the power of their girl tribe to see them through when they feel like giving up.

Where do I start! I can’t think of a single thing that I didn’t like about this book. I loved seeing Ellie, Shy, Sloan & Courtney’s stories evolve throughout this book. It exuded true sisterhood, friendship, loyalty & love. Very lovable characters, with the exception of Cairo lol, but Cassidy & Loyal were the epitome of good men! It was nice to see these ladies’ vulnerability amongst each other & how they held each other up when someone was down. I hope there’s a book 2, to see more of these ladies. This is a book that I can read over & over again.

I haven't read a book by Ashley Antoinette in years but, when I saw the cover of this book I just had to read it. Before the Street Lights Come On was a really good read. It catapulted me back to 1992 and gave me all the Waiting To Exhale feels. I loved it. 🥰

“Friends were your secret keepers, your hitters, your moral advisors, your spirit lifters, your insecurity destroyer, your worry mitigator, and your intuition confirmer.“

I loved the loyalty and strength of Elliot’s friend group. One of the most heartfelt moments in the book was their prayer time.
They supported each other through several different types of losses and hard truths.

The book seemed to center around siblings, Cassidy and Elliot. The whirlwind romance in the book felt unrealistic at times but it also added to the magic of Christmas. Cassidy's character stood out to me, embodying qualities I admired. He was my favorite!!
I had some issues with Elliot having difficulties with starting a new relationship but having no qualms reaping the benefits.

The book had a lot of wise quotes and great steamy scenes that kept the pages turning.

This is my first Ashley Antoinette book in YEARS! I listened to the audiobook and it was pretty good. I’ll share the things I enjoyed:

❥The beautiful wintry cover
❥The lifelong bond of friendship/sisterhood between these women
❥Cassidy
❥Cassidy and Ellie’s dad
❥The scene where Sloan leaves right out without question to help Brooklyn
❥The concept behind “before the street lights come on” - looking out for your friends and making sure they are good and safe ❣︎

There was so much that happened within the span of 1-2 weeks that much of it was so unrealistic! This is a very well-loved urban fiction so definitely check it out for yourself!!

I don't know how I wasn't expecting to be wrecked by this, but here we are. This story was an amazing example of friendship, perseverance, love, loyalty, and strength. Each and every character showed how love truly conquers all. I can't say which of the friend group learned the most valuable lesson, because in each season that the friends were in, their lesson was valuable. I'm so glad to see Black women being loved out loud. And loving each other through all the ups and downs of life. This was an incredible journey and I'm excited to see where this friend/sister group goes. Lifetime, we need this on the screen for next Christmas season!

Ashley Antoinette delivers an emotional, unforgettable story about the kind of friendship that lasts decades. The bond between these characters is beautiful, 20 years of love, loyalty, and showing up for each other through every trial and triumph. Their support feels real, raw, and deeply moving.

The audiobook, narrated by Wesleigh Siobhan, takes it to another level. Her performance brings every emotion to life and pulls you even deeper into their world.

A powerful, heartfelt story that proves friendship can be the greatest love of all.

Before the Street Lights Come On is a breathtaking ode to friendship, sisterhood, and the unshakable bonds that carry us through life's challenges. This book effortlessly weaves the stories of four women whose connection transcends time and circumstance, creating a tapestry of love, resilience, and loyalty.

The title itself is a metaphorical reminder of the sacred duty we have to our loved ones: to always check in, to protect, and to ensure their well-being. Through the characters' journeys, the book is rich with hidden gems
- insightful life lessons tucked into moments of joy, pain, and laughter. From heartwarming confessions to soul-stirring confrontations, each chapter brims with authenticity and emotional depth.

The women's individual struggles are uniquely relatable, yet it's their collective strength and unwavering support for one another that leave a lasting impression. Whether they're pulling each other out of tough situations or celebrating milestones, their bond feels like a mirror of the friendships we cherish most.

This was not just a story; it's a love letter to sisterhood and a call to action to hold our loved ones close. It's a must-read for anyone who values the beauty of deep, genuine connections. Five stars just aren't enough for this gem of a book!

Soooo good! I loved everything about this book except for the timespan of when it took place. Like wait all this happened in 2 weeks nahhhhh. But despite that nothing can take away my love for these characters and the story line. I loved that the women were my age and going through real life situations that I could relate to in a sense. I connected with each and every character in some way. I loved how the friends really supported one another and came to the others side Always! The scene with Sloan coming to Brooklyn’s rescue was everything!! I loved how she checked Brooklyns father as only a true friend can. I loved how Sloan was vulnerable with Cassidy and called him before that surgery. That scene made me cry! I was too through! I loved the ups and downs of this book. I loved the male main characters. I even loved Loyal even though he seemed a little too rushed with his love. Cassidy was EVERYTHING!! Like EVERYTHING! Sloan was pissing me off even though I understood her tug of war in her heart. I love how their story played out. I love how once Courtney went with her friends she ultimately did what she needed to do for herself. Her friends really saved her and helped her take that first step. The only one I didn’t really connect with is Chi but still liked her.

And Ashley…..who is delivering diapers and formula to someone’s house unannounced after midnight?!? Some parts of the story were really fit in to meet the rushed timeframe.

I need and want more of these characters. I really love how Ashley incorporates the kids in to her stories to the point that they are just as essential to the story line. I loved how the trusted adults were there for the kids.

Loved this book down to the point that I was rubbing my feet together from excitement at some points. Please read this book for the holidays. It really gives you all the feels!

A round of applause for Before The Streetlights Come On! It was absolutely worth the extra Audible credit! The sheer joy I feel for this story is indescribable, and I find myself wishing I could be best friends with Shy, Sloan, Ellie, and Courtney! This tale is the ultimate blueprint for true friendship! And let’s not forget the beautiful romance woven throughout—it simply takes the experience to another level! Finishing this gem on Christmas Day gave me all the feels—such a bittersweet moment!

Side Note—Ashley Antoinette mentioned this might be her new fave book, and she even joked about not killing anyone in the story—well, I definitely had two people in mind who would’ve been perfect candidates!😇

Thank you, Ashley Antoinette, for this breath of fresh air. This story embodies friendship and love for the emotionally mature. I enjoyed healthy friendship, even when things were rocky, the loyalty was always there and that is something to hold on to. There was a mutual respect and adoration between the women that I just loved all around. The love and growth for each character was beautifully written. When friends become family, it’s everything!

The representation of Black family men being open and vulnerable, and deserving of real love was also a highlight for me.

I feel a book 2 coming!

4/5⭐️I didn’t really care for the character Ellie. She had her own issues but judged others just as harshly, which felt contradictory. However, I did like how the story revealed everyone’s secrets. The gradual revelations made the story engaging and well done overall.

Wow, just wow! This was such a phenomenal, heartwarming, and fabulous read! This book reminds me so much of Waiting to Exhale because it centers on four best friends navigating friendship, love, divorce, loss, domestic violence, identity, motherhood, career, and mental health. The story follows four women who grew up together in Flint, Michigan, as they reunite for Christmas. Each woman brings her own deeply personal story to the table.

Ellie is a mother of two who hasn’t returned to Michigan since her mother passed away. She was married to an awful man, Cairo, who left her and their children for another woman. Ellie and Cairo share one biological daughter and one adopted daughter, but Cairo never accepted the adopted child and treated her terribly. After four years of separation, Ellie returns home and falls in love with Loyal, a successful businessman who treats her like a queen. He moves fast—even buying her a house. While he was initially still involved with his child’s mother, which felt like a red flag to me, I was glad to see him eventually end that relationship and fully commit to Ellie.

Sloan is a successful OB-GYN who struggles when it comes to love. As a teenager, she had a crush on Ellie’s brother, Cassidy—and the feelings were mutual, which I thought was so sweet. Unfortunately, Cassidy got into trouble with the law and was convicted of killing an older man who had raped his mother. Sloan was devastated by his incarceration and fearful because of her own traumatic past—her mother was abused and ultimately killed by her boyfriend. When Sloan finally learns the truth about why Cassidy committed the crime, she becomes more understanding and forgiving, and more confident that they could build a healthy relationship together.

Cassidy, Ellie’s brother and Sloan’s love interest, spent 23 years in prison for killing his mother’s perpetrator. He acted in defense of his mother, but because she never shared her assault with anyone but him, the truth never came out in court. I truly wish the reason had been revealed sooner so he wouldn’t have lost half his life. Despite everything, Cassidy rebuilds his life and becomes a successful businessman.

Courtney’s story was heartbreaking. She is a domestic violence survivor who met James when she was in high school—he was ten years older and her first and only love. She dropped out of school, got pregnant, and later lost her son to violence. After their son’s death, James became even more controlling and abusive, blaming Courtney for the tragedy simply because she had gone out to celebrate her birthday. That was incredibly unfair. Courtney had every right to live her life. When she became pregnant again and lost her job, James’s insecurity and violence escalated. I was so relieved when she finally left him.

Shy, the fourth friend, is a content creator who presents a false image of wealth. In reality, she’s renting, stealing, and struggling with her identity and sexuality. She hasn’t fully figured out who she is yet, and her journey is about learning to live authentically.

At its core, this book is about love—romantic love, platonic love, and self-love. Before the Streetlights Come On was a phrase Ellie and Cassidy’s mother used to describe home. To her, home meant love, safety, and belonging. I absolutely loved that because it’s so true—home should always feel safe and secure.

In conclusion, this book is excellent. It covers so many important topics and feels perfect for the holiday season. Cozy, emotional, and full of heart—definitely Hallmark vibes. 10000/10.

“Friends were your secret keepers, your hitters, your moral advisors, your spirit lifters, your insecurity destroyers, your worry mitigators, and your intuition confirmers.”

Ashley Antoinette does it AGAIN! After reading so many books from her catalog, this one felt beautifully different... a breath of fresh air in the very best way. The way I devoured this book in a day and a half says everything. This feel-good holiday novel was exactly what my heart needed and gave me major Waiting to Exhale vibes.

The writing? Absolutely amazing.
The narration? Top-tier... the BEST.
From start to finish, I felt like I was watching a movie unfold in real time. It was real, raw, relatable, and a must-read for every woman who has ever relied on her circle of friends to keep her afloat.
Ellie, Sloane, Courtney, and Shy show us what true sisterhood looks like, when the men in their lives switch up, when their children act up, when their jobs are acting all the way up, and when life feels like it’s cutting up with no mercy. These women lean into the power of their girl tribe to hold them together when they feel like falling apart.

This book made me laugh, roll my eyes, shout, and cheer for each character. I felt deeply seen in this boo—in my own life experiences. It reminded me of how healing friendship can be and why the right circle of women can pull you through your darkest seasons.
This is one of those books I would re-read just to feel that magic again.
THIS! BOOK!
A serious celebration of friendship, sisterhood, and the love that lifts us when everything else is breaking.

This book was everything! 🤎 I love how we get to see different archetypes of Black women and relate to each of them. This book was a warm hug even though it took me through an emotional roller-coaster. Sloan was my favorite 😍! I love how she's the strong and bougie friend, who finally got her HEA. And Cassidy is my man , my man, my man!!!! Like my sweet man was holding onto to all of that trauma and still was being the best man he could be! 🥺 I hope that Courtney and Chi get their HEAs, especially Courtney! I was shocked to learn that Chi was living a false life, but my girl came clean🤣. Now Ellie got on my nerves, first with the Sloan & Cassidy situation, like she was doing too much🙄. Plus Sloan was the friend that was there for you through everything and you used her to pour out your problems. But couldn't be there for her during the one time she couldn't be strong. Like come on! Ain't nobody said nothing to you when you just met Loyal and buss it down for him 😭. And then speaking of Loyal, she almost took my Cairo over a BS apology 🙄😭. Loyal was my man, my man too and she played in his face. She kinda redeemed herself at the end, but she's still not my favorite. Anyway, I loved Papa Bishop throughout the whole story. Everyone deserves a father, grandfather, and father in law like him!🥰💓 I can't wait to see what's in store for this crew! Merry Christmas 🎅🏿

I bought the physical copy of this book last year around Christmas time. I don't know why I didn't read it then, but when I saw the audiobook come out this year I knew I had to listen to it because it was narrated by one of my favorite narrators Wesleigh Siobhan! I loved everything about this book, the sisterhood, the trials that they all experienced, the spice...literally everything! I can wait to re-listen to this book, and I see this will be on my list of comfort books!

And this has to be addressed...LOYAL!!!!! WHEW now that is a MAN!!!! He and Cassidy were good guys! I'm not going to lie - I wanted Courtney to circle back to Loyal's Brother...now the end of the book said 'The End...For Now" I would love to see Courtney and Shy to get their HEA! I want Shy to find a good woman that she can be herself with (maybe Loyal Baby Mama...LOL), AND Courtney needs someone good as well!

Sloan drove me crazy - because I understood what she went through with her mom but she was projecting that story on Cassidy and I didn't like it! And the nerve of you to think that you're just too good for someone is WILD!

I was about to be mad at Ellie as well letting Loyal get away! That man came in playing no games, and showing her how a real man moves!
