On the one hand, Magical Girl Apocalypse isn't really all that good. It overuses a lot of typical anime tropes, it plays off the sexuality of one of the already overtly sexualized characters, and it feels a little light on story from the very beginning, neglecting the more important themes. However...

This story is still a crap ton of fun. I think I love this manga series thus far because it feels like a B horror movie. Everything I mentioned above, the overuse of tropes, the sexuality, the light story, are all elements of "bad horror" movies, and I actually really love that. This is by no means a great book. All of the problems that I mentioned above do exist. But hell, I loved this book when the action picked up. Seriously, this is a bloody, action packed series that, while definitely not perfect, should excite fans of the more silly, over-the-top horror movies of the eighties and nineties. I'm talking Sharknado levels of blood and sass. And the monster designs.... Seriously, I'm a sucker for character design and though the main characters themsleves are pretty boring, Kentaro Sato nailed the designs of the enemies in this book.
This series is definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoy stupid, hilarious horror, this might be the one for you.
