I just finished Hearts At Turn One by Danielle Brooks and I’m sitting here trying to gather my thoughts because this one… it lingers.

This story pulled me in quietly at first, and then before I knew it, I was fully invested, not just in the romance, but in the people. Because that’s what this book does so well. It gives you characters who feel real. Flawed. Pressured. Searching.

Adrian is the kind of character you don’t just read about, you feel him. The pressure he carries, the expectations tied to his name, the way he’s constantly chasing something bigger than himself… it’s heavy. And you can tell he’s been living in that weight for a long time.

And Paloma? Whew. I connected with her in a way that surprised me. That desire to be known for you and not what you’re connected to, not what people assume about you… that hit deep. Her journey felt personal, like watching someone fight to hold onto their identity in a world that keeps trying to rewrite it.

What I really loved is how this story explores identity alongside love. It’s not just boy meets girl. It’s who am I outside of everything people expect me to be? And then… can someone love me for that version of me?

The romance is definitely a slow burn, but not the kind that drags, the kind that builds. It’s filled with tension, hesitation, and longing. Those moments where you can feel something shifting before anything even happens. The chemistry is there, but it’s layered with real stakes and real consequences, and that made every interaction feel meaningful.

And the emotional depth really stood out. This isn’t just a light read. It touches on pressure, legacy, privacy, vulnerability, and what it means to let someone truly see you. There’s a softness to certain moments that balances the intensity so well.

The setting adds so much too. The racing world, the fast pace, the spotlight. Everything around them is moving quickly, but emotionally, things take time to unfold. I loved that contrast.

If I had to describe this book in one feeling, it would be this. It’s about wanting to be chosen, not because of what you come with, but because of who you are at your core.

Overall, this was a heartfelt, character driven romance that gave me tension, emotion, and something real to hold onto. It’s the kind of story that reminds you that love and self discovery can exist at the same time, and sometimes, they have to.

And yes… I’d definitely recommend it.

No brakes 🚫 Just feelings ❤️

You’ve got the “poster boy” for perfection stuck in a relationship he doesn’t want, suffocating under expectations. Then there’s Paloma, a woman hiding who she really is while rejecting everything she was born into—this was bound to be messy.

The way they kept dancing around each other had me hooked. I loved that they were both obviously into each other but waiting on the other to make the first move (so relatable 🙄). Add in the pressure from family, image, and secrets, and it’s the kind of build-up that keeps you locked in.

I was so caught up in the story that when I got to the last page and realized it ended on a cliffhanger, my jaw was on the floor 😲 Danielle, why would you do that to me?!?! 😭😭

It’s got that perfect mix of romance and chaos, making it a compelling read for anyone who loves stories with depth, drama, and undeniable chemistry.

Love that this is a F1 series. It’s nice getting characters with different careers.

This is a slow burn and in a good way. The cliffhanger i didn’t care for because i wanted to know happened. That way we can start book 2 with the next sibling/couple. Anyways, Paloma and Adrian are nice together. Their start was a little rocky but things turned around. They both are fighting things in the personal life. One trying to escape their family name and the other having the weight of their family in their back. They became what each other needed. Especially how Paloma took the stress off that man and he realized life was worth breathing with her in it.

The mess of fake dating, blackmail and family added a good balance and pace to the story. Ready for book 2 please.

Omg, who knew I’d be this obsessed with F1?! 🏎️💨 This book totally pulled me in—I loved the slow-burn romance and that irresistible grumpy x sunshine dynamic. The drama? Chef’s kiss. The tension and spice? Absolute perfection. 🔥

Such a cute, addictive love story that I couldn’t put down. I’m already counting down the days until book two!

Huge thanks for the advance copy—I’m officially hooked! 💖

ARC Review

This was a 3.5 for me.

I liked the idea of having a romance surrounding a F1 race car driver because we do not see much of those types of black romance books but I would have liked to see more of the actual racing written on page in the book. As I read the book, I felt a little bad for Adrian because he really had to be this polished guy that couldn't even live his own life for fear of bad press all because of his brother and what he had going on. It also didn't seem like his brother really took heed to what was being told to him and purposely wanted to ruffle Adrian's feathers.

When Paloma became Adrian's assistant I was happy that she didn't let his rudeness run her off and stood her ground to let him known he could not speak to her any kind of way. Once they got a better routine going and he became more chill around her that is when they started seeing each other in a different light but they knew it was kind of forbidden since she worked for him and they didn't want any rumors in the press especially once he found out who she really was.

I didn't really like the whole Lyra situation with him because he was just doing things to appease her and her image but he wasn't really benefitting from it on his end so I felt like with all these good PR people he had around him there was a better way to get rid of her. Same goes for his relationship with Paloma. There could have been a way for them to "announce" their relationship that wouldn't have had a negative effect on either of them. The situation with Paloma's father seemed more like a positive thing than how it was portrayed to be.

I enjoyed this book but the ending lowkey had me like no, why would you do that because I wanted more and it seemed liked Paloma and Adrian were finally getting somewhere and then this drama appears. I can't wat to see where they go in the next book.

Thank you to Danielle Brooks for the e-ARC.
First I am so happy for authors like Danielle, who see that there is not enough romance books with representations in certain areas, and decide to write their own. This is a F1 sports romance and that alone made me excited.
This is the introduction to her new series, Checkered Harts, book 1 follows the Adrian Hart, He is a f1 driver and considered the golden Hart. He is reserved, doesn't like drama, and just wants to win and honor his father's legacy. His brother who is also on his team, is more of an extrovert and lose cannon. With the pressure and everything on his plate, his PR manager who is also his sister decides to get him an assistant for the season, and that person was the FMC Paloma. Paloma has a secret identity; she is the daughter of the owner of the team. She has always been rebellious to the fame that comes with her last name and has been trying to carve a path for herself outside of the public eye.

When Adrian and Paloma meet, they got off on the wrong foot immediately, as Adrian doesn't feel like he needs a babysitter. It took some time but with Paloma doing a great job taking care of Adrian's needs, keeping him on track, always being in close proximity, their walls start to come down. This is a slow burn that feels realistic as it takes you through months of them being around each other, travelling, sports on page. The yearning and tension of them fighting their attraction to each other. There is a little bit of drama, and family dynamics, backgrounds and how it affects both characters. I really enjoyed the story; it does end in a cliffhanger which is not my favorite but also I can't wait for book 2.

ARC review
Danielle Brooks has a gift for writing characters who are still figuring out who they are underneath everything the world has projected onto them, and Adrian and Paloma are no exception.

These were two strong-willed people dropped into each other's orbit in the most unexpected way, and what made their dynamic so compelling was that they saw each other. Not the version everyone else needed them to be, not the role they'd been assigned — the real thing. And that kind of recognition is rare, especially when you're surrounded by people who've known you forever and still somehow missed the point entirely.

Adrian's family situation genuinely had me frustrated in the best and worst ways. The older sibling dynamic is real, I get it, but at some point you have to ask — where is the accountability? Where are the boundaries? It started to feel like everyone in his corner had their hand out in some form, and that weight on him was heavy to sit with as a reader. But it also made watching him find his footing that much more meaningful.

What I found quietly brilliant was the pacing. You're reading a book wrapped around the high-octane world of F1, all speed and precision and pressure, and yet Brooks deliberately slows everything down for Adrian and Paloma. Their relationship breathes. It builds. It earns itself. That contrast wasn't accidental and it worked beautifully.

Slow start, but stay in it. These characters will pull you through.

Danielle Brooks’ Hearts at Turn One surprised me in a way I wasn’t fully expecting. At first glance, it feels like a story about taking risks and stepping into something new—but it ends up digging a lot deeper into identity, vulnerability, and what it actually means to let people see you as you are.

The pacing at the beginning is a little slow, but once the characters start opening up, the emotional core really kicks in. What stood out most to me was how real the relationships felt—not overly dramatic, but not unrealistically perfect either. There’s a messy, honest quality to the way people connect and misunderstand each other that made it easy to stay invested.

Brooks does a great job showing growth without making it feel forced. The main character’s journey isn’t some huge, overnight transformation—it’s gradual, sometimes frustrating, and very human. That made the payoff feel earned rather than predictable.

If I had one critique, it’s that a few moments felt like they could’ve gone even deeper, especially when the stakes were highest. Still, the overall message lands: taking a chance on yourself (and others) is scary, but necessary.

Overall, Hearts at Turn One is a thoughtful, character-driven read that sticks with you more than you might expect. Definitely worth picking up if you like stories about personal growth, relationships, and figuring things out as you go.

Thank you Danielle Brooks for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC and provide my honest feedback.

I love a sweet and slow love story where the lovers are equally smitten, but waiting for the other one to say something first. Especially when they are in constant close contact. The tension!! This story gives all of that and more.

Paloma is trying to find her own identity other than heiress, so she rebels whenever she can. This time her carefree rebellion put her closer to the family business than she ever wanted to be. She gets to be an assistant to the star driver in her father's racing empire.

Adrian, like Paloma, is living in the shadows of legacy. He has fallen right into his father's footsteps, but he has to make sure he isn't crushed by the weight of expectations and pretence.

Fire burns between these two in this will-they-won't-they contemporary romance. This medium-paced, character-driven novel gives soft love, but drama always finds a way to creep in. We get to see Paloma pull Adrian out of his reserved and guarded shell. She still has room for growth before she's able to realize the true independence she so desperately wants. This story gives us the foundation of Paloma and Adrian and leaves you wanting more.

Initial thoughts:
Another unforgettable sport romance.
Didn’t know, I would like a F1 storyline, but it was juicy with drama, entertaining with the suppose love triangle and reflective based on the family dynamics and issues. A highly recommended read!

Book overview:
We are following the heart brothers Axel and Adrian and Paloma.
Paloma is the daughter of the race car owner and boss of the heart brother “Armand Duvall”
Adrian and brother Axel are F1 racers with the prospects to becoming champions within this year championships.
Paloma want to crave her own career path outside of her father and family fortune.
She didn’t know that taking the job as Adrian personal assistant would not only throw her into a love triangle but also work for her father which she was avoiding.
Adrian is current in a fake dating relationship with the most spoken about influencer Lyra whilst heavily carrying the responsibility of making his late father proud by winning this year’s F1 champion.

Read this page turner to find out whether Adrian and Paloma will become an item and whether Adrian become this year champion putting all his family drama and fake dating relationship behind.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO… this book really did me dirty with that cliffhanger! I was locked in to the drama from start to finish. The buildup was intense, and even when I realized I only had a few pages left, I kept hoping—begging—for some kind of resolution. I knew it would’ve been rushed and probably unfair to the story, but I still wasn’t ready to be left hanging… and yet, here we are.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this read because it felt different. I don’t know much about racing, but you can tell the author did her research. Even as someone unfamiliar with that world, I felt grounded enough to follow along and stay engaged.

Now let’s talk about the main characters… whew, The simmering tension between them had me waiting for that moment when they’d finally break and when they did, it delivered. But it wasn’t just about that… the story kept pushing forward, and now that we’ve crossed that line without a happily ever after?? Yeah… I’m invested.

I’ll definitely be waiting (impatiently) for book two because you can’t leave me like this!

This was my first F1 book. Not knowing much about the sport going in didn't stop me because Danielle Brooks knows how to lure you in with her writing. Enough info was given without taking away from the romance.

This definitely was a slow burn! The chemistry between Adrian & Paloma was there from the beginning for me. I loved how they complimented each other where Adrian needed someone to keep him on track, Paloma was there. For Paloma to be her true self, Adrian was there, no judgement.

One of my favorite things about this book was the amount of travel. I didn't realize that in F1, you are constantly traveling all around the world to participate in races. That alone had me jealous of Paloma & Adrian 🤭. The setting for each stop was so descriptive, I felt like I was there too!

The amount of drama was just enough! Between family members of both Adrian and Paloma, and THE insufferable Lyra (🙄), I had to know what happened next!

That cliffhanger for a ending - what is going on!?! I need book 2 NOW!

Cliffhanger

I cannot stand when stories end on a cliffhanger without warning. The story was cute enough, but predictable and not interesting enough for me to remember to read part 2. I read avout 6-7 books per week, so it's hard to remember to read the next part of something that wasn't a standout. Having said that, I dont know if either character is interesting enough for me to care about what happens next. Palamo gave off "poor little rich girl" vibes. She doesn't want anyone to know her last name because she claims she wants to make it on her own, but she lives in her parent's pool house, gets chauffeured around by their driver and shops on their dime. I'm not sure what to think about Adrian. He's supposed to have a "golden heart" and, I guess, is supposed to appear as selfless, but he really just seems like he has no backbone. Lastly, I'm confused about Paloma's sister. I believe Paloma said her sister is only a year younger than her, but she also says that her mother met her (step)dad when Paloma was 5, so that doesn't add up.

ARC review … If fast cars, high stakes, and “I’m not supposed to want you” tension is your lane… this one launches.

Adrian Hart is the polished golden boy of F1 carrying his team, his family, and his image on his back. Paloma Epps-Duvall? She said no thanks to privilege and chose her own path … quietly stepping into his world while hiding exactly who she is. And when their paths cross… yeah, sparks don’t just fly, they threaten to crash.

The tension here is so good … slow burn but charged. You can feel them resisting each other while inching closer to impact, and I was locked in the entire time. The F1 backdrop added a fresh layer of pressure and glam without taking away from the romance, and the family dynamics actually matter.

The pacing mirrors the adrenaline of the track. Final verdict: a strong, addictive series opener that had me hooked from the first lap. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️

📕Book: 🏁🏎️Hearts at Turn One🏎️🏁
🖊️Author:

This romance had me hooked from the start! She’s trying to figure out who she really is outside of her father’s shadow, while he’s stuck in a relationship he clearly doesn’t want to be in. Their first interactions definitely aren’t sweet and soft, but the tension and chemistry between them are impossible to ignore.
I absolutely loved the racing element because it gave the story something fresh and exciting compared to the usual romance tropes. The MMC is the perfect grumpy-but-loveable character, and I found myself rooting for him the entire time.
The slow burn romance was done so well, and Danielle’s writing style made everything flow effortlessly. It’s smooth, engaging, and so easy to get lost in.
If you love slow burns, undeniable chemistry, and a unique sports romance vibe, you need this on your TBR immediately!

Danielle has done it again!! I really loved reading Paloma and Adrian’s journey—both individually and together. I definitely understood where Adrian was coming from as the oldest, carrying the weight of being the “golden child.” And I loved that Paloma really saw him—not just the amazing F1 driver, the golden heart, but truly Adrian.

Now granted…that is her boss 🫣 but listen, I was rooting for them BAD because we love a slow burn over here!!

Paloma girl, my heart goes out to you. Trying to make it on your own and find your own path without leaning on your namesake? Whew. I hated seeing her shrink around her family, but I understood it too.

And Lyra…yeah no. I don’t like her. I was ready to jump in the book and fight 💀

But overall, this book was sooo good. I love a good boss/assistant trope because the YEARNING?? Top tier.

But Danielle girlie pop…why would you leave us on a cliffhanger like that?! 😭 Patiently waiting on book 2!!

Thanks for these advance copy such an amazing read!

A vulnerable, high-stakes slow burn!

If you think you’ve read every type of F1 romance, think again. This story moves beyond the glitz and glamour to explore what happens when "having it all" isn't enough.

What I loved:

The Depth: Adrian and Paloma aren’t just "rich kids." They are complex characters fighting to be seen for who they are, not just their family names.

The MMC: Adrian’s internal struggle with family expectations is so relatable. You feel every bit of his pressure.

The FMC: Paloma’s independence is inspiring. Watching her take a chance on a new life—and eventually, on love—was so rewarding.

The Pace: A perfect slow-burn that builds genuine vulnerability and heat.

This book is a must-read for sports romance fans who want a story with a soul. Definitely grab this one on Kindle Unlimited!

This was my first F1 book, and honestly, I enjoyed the ride.

The story follows Paloma as she tries to figure out who she is outside of her family’s expectations and the life that’s already been mapped out for her. She has that rebellious side and doesn’t like being put in a box, which ends up leading her into a situation she definitely didn’t plan for. That’s where Adrian comes in. Adrian is dealing with a lot of pressure from his family and everything expected of him.

It’s a slow burn with just a hint of spice, which felt right for their story. It definitely gives grumpy/sunshine vibes without feeling forced....except for Lyra. Whew! She got on my nerves!

At this point, who knows… F1 romances might be my new thing.

Thank you for this ARC.

OK I may be bias because this is one of my favorite authors but I absolutely loved this book. First I don’t know anything about F1 racing but this book has made me a fan ( where are all the sexy black racers)!!!

So this is book one in this series and it follows the Hart Brothers & the Duvalls.
The MMC is Adrian Hart and the FMC is Pasha Epps-Duvall. This novel highlights the struggles of working with family, trying to make a name for yourself by hiding your true identity, fake relationships, and forced proximity between boss and assistant.

The banter between the main characters, sibling rivalry, and the media attention the brothers had made this feel like a Netflix series!!!
Then the cliffhanger at the end!!! In true Danielle Brooks writing style she is making me wait for more!!!

10/10 highly recommend

Book one of the checkered Harts series.
We meet Paloma who is out to make a name for herself beyond her family name; and gets a job as an assistant for F1 driver Adrian Hart. Adrian is the golden boy out of he and his teammate brother which means he bares the weight of it all. Adrian and Paloma start off Rocky but slowly but surely the sparks start to fly.

This is definitely a slow burn where you feel the tension building between Adrian and Paloma who are both hold secrets that if found out can and will cause problems.

This was so good but spoiler alert we are left on a cliffhanger . . . Just dangling on the edge. Safe to say I anticipating part two of this series.

This book was a fast slow burn 🤭, engaging read that kept me hooked from start to finish—I definitely wasn’t ready for it to end.

Paloma is determined to build a life outside of her powerful family, while Adrian is weighed down by the expectations of his. Their first meeting is anything but smooth, but what starts as tension turns into understanding, friendship, and eventually something deeper.

I really appreciated that their relationship felt natural and earned—nothing rushed or forced. This story balances romance with real themes of identity, pressure, and choosing yourself while loving someone else.

Overall, a solid sports romance with both heart and substance.

Adrian is carrying the weight of everything while trying to keep up appearances, and Pasha is running from a life she doesn’t even want. The setup alone had me locked in, and their chemistry kept building in a way that held my attention.

I will say, I wanted a little more racing between the brothers. I would’ve loved to see more of Adrian and Axle’s dynamic. Still, the tension and relationships carried the story. I’m definitely hoping for more Axle (and whatever is going on with Amberleigh 👀) in the next book. And that cliffhanger???? Yeah… I was not ready 😳

This is book one in the Checkered Hart Series, and my first time reading an F1-themed romance. I have to say, I liked it!

The story follows Adrian, an F1 driver, and Paloma, a woman determined to make a name for herself. The pacing felt a bit slow at the start, but once things picked up, I was hooked.

As with the last book I read from this author, I really enjoy her writing style. And that ending?? Definitely left me on a cliffhanger, lol.

I’m excited to continue the rest of the series!

My first F1 romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Paloma's trying to find herself beyond just being an heiress. Her carefree attitude leads her to work as an assistant to a star driver in her father's racing empire. Adrian also struggles with his legacy. He follows his father's path but wants to avoid being overwhelmed by expectations.

This was definitely a slow burn, a sweet and steady love story where both lovers are equally smitten but hesitant to act. The story delivers all the tension, drama, and more. I can't wait for book 2! That cliffhanger!!
