Now her family wants him dead, his MC wants him loyal, and the only thing that matters is what happens when she meets him at midnight, whisperin’ his name like a prayer.

J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.
After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.
So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.
She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.
I wasn't sure what to think about this book at first, especially since I heard it had a cliffhanger. Knowing how much I dislike cliffhangers, I decided to wait until the author wrapped up the series before diving in. Just wanted to get that off my chest!
The story revolves around Legion Kane and Savannah Ashby, set in a small Montana town. They come from completely different worlds—Savannah is privileged, while Legion has a rough background with little hope for a better future. Their dynamic is intriguing; she represents the angelic side of life, while he embodies the darker aspects. Their first Private encounter happened when Legion was fourteen and Savannah was twelve, both drawn to an old grain silo that marked the boundary between their vastly different lives.
Let’s just say, It was about twenty acres of Kane land and about three hundred of Ashby land between the two parcels.
Legion just got out of a three-year prison stint, but the reasons behind it are still a mystery. I hope the author doesn't take too long to reveal that. I'm also really intrigued by Savannah and her mother's obsession with Legion; I can't wait to learn more about that dynamic.
There are five books in this series, and while they could have been combined into one, I'm really looking forward to what the next installment has in store.
❀⋆.ೃ࿔* DUST & FLOWERS ❀⋆.ೃ࿔* Is the first dark romance book within the (BADLANDS MC) series by author J.A. Huss.
The cover on Amazon got me one clicking this faster than a blink of an eye, then throw in 'Sons of Anarchy and Yellowstone' in the same sentence, I was sold...Plus it's a no brainer when it comes to this author..
Tropes: Outlaw Biker Romance Rich Girl / Poor Boy Property Of Morally Gray/Anti-Hero MMC Obsessed/Possessive MMC Forbidden Love Childhood Sweethearts Touch Her and Die Secret Relationship
I didn’t hate this, but I also didn’t love this, I kind of expected more, but to be fair, maybe it’s coming. It’s definitely not dark, not even a teeny tiny bit, I guess that’s what’s left me a wee bit deflated. This is definitely a quick read and does end on a cliffy which I’m keen to see where it leads us going into the next book. They were totally on opposite ends of the spectrum, she was born with a silver spoon between her lips, he was trailer trash, with no prospects of a future other than where he ended up, taking the fall for the club. Secrecy surrounds us with their story, stolen moments etched on camera, snap shots lead us to questions unanswered, a mother’s request that these two do not get involved and are to remain at arms length with no prospect of marriage or she’ll lose her inheritance and safety net.
Do I wish it was all one book instead of 5? In a way yes BUT! I'm also glad she didn't do that. This has all the appearance of being an EPIC read. Savannah and Legion are great characters. Complicated and layered. There are so many elements to their characters and questions that need answers there is no way one book could really give us what we're going to want. This was fast paced and a fantastic read. I'm really looking forward to the next.
I’m so sorry if you liked this book but I just did not care about any of the characters and I didn’t really like the fact that they just hooked up until she was about to get married because that’s what she was supposed to do, and then she decided hey I don’t want to live like this. I just didn’t care🥲
WOWZA!! 😳🔥 This was dark, disturbing, gritty, and straight-up uncomfortable—in the best way. Definitely not your cookie-cutter MC read.
I’m usually not a novella fan, but this is book one of five, and together they essentially form a full-length story. That I can get behind 🙌 I held off until the final book released (because patience is not my virtue 😅), and after finishing this first installment… yeah, I’m already hooked and desperate for more.
Legion Kane (seriously, what a sexy bad-boy biker name 😮🔥) just did three years for a crime he didn’t commit—all for the MC. He walks out of prison with nothing but an expired driver’s license and $27 to his name. He’s picked up by Cash Ashby—older brother to Savannah, aka the girl who’s always owned Legion’s heart 💔—and immediately warned to stay away. Savannah is now engaged to a senator’s son, and her future is very much not her own.
The contrast between these families is stark. The Ashbys are old-money Montana royalty, sitting on tens of thousands of acres, while the Kanes are barely scraping by in a rusted-out trailer. Same town, completely different worlds.
Legion and Savannah’s history runs deep. They met as kids, became each other’s first everything, and shared this quiet, intense bond that never needed labels. Their abandoned silo hideaway? 🥺 Ugh, I loved that. It felt like their space in a world that never really gave them a chance.
They haven’t seen each other in three years, but the connection hasn’t faded—if just somehow heavier, more complicated. And now Savannah is expected to marry Marcus, not for love, but obligation. Duty. Control. All tied up in family expectations and money 💰⛓️
For just over 100 pages, this packs a punch. The author does an incredible job laying the groundwork for what feels like a very dark, messy, addictive ride ahead. There are so many threads already in motion, and I’m fully invested 🖤
My one gripe? Savannah being an IG influencer 🙄 I just couldn't get into the whole internal hashtag/headline thing. But honestly? Everything else hit 🔥
And that ending?! Massive cliffhanger 😱 I barely had the self-control not to immediately jump into book two.
This romance is well written, but note that there's a cliffhanger, and it the first of five installments in this couple's story. I probably won't pick up the others, as I'm just not interested enough at the moment to know what happens. Maybe if it had been in one book, then yes.
Wow, what an introduction to the Book of Legion – Badlands MC series!
Legion has just finished his 3 year long prison sentence (that he did not commit) and finds out his ex-fling Savannah is engaged to the Senator’s son. With Legion being caught up in the MC world, Savannah is stuck in an engagement that is all for show, and traditions that only old money brings. Sprinkle in some family drama, and you will be drawn into Legion and Savannah’s story immediately.
Since this is a novella in a five part series, I’m excited to see what the next book brings. Book 1 was very much setting up the background to Legion and Savannah’s complicated and naive history with each other, so it was a bit slow but I’m interested to see how their story plays out. Warning that book 1 ends in a cliffhanger.
Thank you J.A. Huss for providing this e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
Loved this fast paced suspenseful start to the Book of Legion!
Readers are advised that each book will end in a cliffy, which I read as JA Huss is going to keep me on the edge of my seat wondering which direction the next book will head in.
This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to read on!
This novella kept me on my toes and flipping pages, luckily I didn’t throw my phone when I got to the end (iykyk) I love the end of book stuff ! Gotta go read the next one so sorry for the short review!
First off, this is not my type of *tea* if you know what I mean. I don't read biker romances. Just something I could find with a leather jacket to meet a criteria for tbd towers competition. The writing is really well done for a free kindle book, a few notes though. I think knowing that this is a book is a series of the same characters, would help people understand the time line. I thought this was one of those book series which each book is one couple and their story but it literally ends on a cliff hanger and continues straight away in the next book. I think she may have broke it down in chunks for download #'s because I can't understand why a book would be 166 pages otherwise if it continues to another book right away.
I wanted to note that while this one isn't very dark - the next one is. There is also underage smash scene in this one that really bothered me. I don't want to read about teenagers have s3x, so maybe just innuendo about it next time, especially in a time of Epstein.
This is the first book. We're introduced to Legion and Savannah. We learn their story and see them come together, but Savannah's family creates quite a ruckus which ends in a cliffhanger. Loved Legion, but when we meet his little sister Mercy she steals our hearts! Can't wait to follow the storyline off Legion and Savannah and to see what Mercy is up to in the next installment!
Dust and Flowers is the first novella in the Book of Legion which introduces us to Legion Kane aka Demon and Savannah Ashby. These two are drawn to each other yet the Ashby family will do anything and everything to keep them apart.
Legion is the bad boy, the member of an MC which is known for no good yet he's always wanted the one thing he knew he shouldn't.... Savannah Ashby. Savannah is the Ashby Princess, the heir to the Ashby fortune, yet she's unhappy with how her life has been planned out for her and the one person she wants but shouldn't have, left her 3 years ago telling her it's over.
This novella packed a punch with secrets, lies, longing, and a forbidden love that led to an addicting, suspenseful, page turner that ended with me yelling WTF and desperately needing book 2!
Two neighbours who are as far on the opposite side of the tracks as is possible.
An impossible love.
This novella, the first in a five-part serial really sets the pace.
Legion and Savannah have been friends since they were 14 and 12 years old. Their families' properties adjoin. Where one is 20 acres of scrubland housing a delapidated trailer, the other is a 47,000 acre ranch.
The book begins when Legion is released from prison after three years for a crime he did not commit. Meanwhile Savannah is engaged to the son of a senator.
"One way or the other, every choice we make writes itself on someone else's skin."
Julie Huss has painted so much depth into these characters. Legion is as rough as they come - and he's had it really rough - but he has the soul of a poet. There is an obvious duality in him. Savannah has everything money can buy, but she's tortured by her love for Legion and the fact that a lot of people have so little.
Additionally, there is a lot going on from steamy moments to conniving and violence. It ends on a cliffhanger insidious enough to ensure that I will definitely be continuing this serial.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and am leaving a completely honest review.
My rating: 4.5 stars. Very nice read! 😍 Short & sweet, in a gritty way. Initially, the covers were what made me check out these books! 🥰 Continuing straight away with the next part!
The stage is set.. two people from opposite worlds. She is from fame and fortune, he's from hell. They call him demon, and his own mother never denied it. Her mother loved to capture his essence, even though she knew he wasn't good enough for her daughter. As children, they grew attached, in secret. Now, she's engaged to another and he's fresh out of prison trying to figure out his future. This is a series of novellas and ends with a cliffhanger. We are just getting to know the characters, a little of their background, and a taste of what's to come. It is edgy and has a slightly darker vibe. There is some sexual content. It alternates POVs.
I received an ARC from the author for my honest review and it's below.
This is part of series and ends in a cliffhanger so be warned. I promise you though if you love all books by JA Huss then you won't go wrong with this one and all the others in the series.
This is the story of Legion & Savannah who were childhood lovers and ones that have a history for many years until he gets locked up in prison for something he didn't do. Savannah comes from money and has been in the spotlight for a long time by her dead mother's cameras. These two are opposite from each other but can't seem to stay away. When Legion gets out of prison he expects his brothers from the MC to pick him up but instead he has Savannah's brother Cash and with him comes a warning that Legion doesn't like nor want to obey.
In this book, you get to learn about Legion and Savannah along with some of their past. You get to see how it all started with this book. It's a book that you won't want to put down and wanting to read the next one.
OMG This book. It’s a serial novel which I knew going in but I really didn’t let that sink in so that ending was a bit surprising. I was expecting more book and it ended before I was ready. On the other hand, it was amazing and I can’t wait to start book two tomorrow. I’ve found another new to me author.
With a new JA Huss book, I know I am going to be drawn into an intense, deep, emotional read with vividly realised characters and settings. From the start, I could feel the heat, the weight of the past, the complex relationships, and my inevitable immersion into the world that Julie has summoned from her imagination. As always, with any book from JA Huss, the book is tightly plotted, written with great style and skill, taking us on a complex journey with hazardous twists and unexpected curves. Characters are complicated, not the least of which is the amazing Legion himself. There is Mercy brave, so young, determined, strong, fascinating. Savannah, trying to avoid the machinations of others. And above all, a meticulously executed story that has left me breathless! Absolutely brilliant 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Unbelievable. This is an absolutely original story. “Yellowstone and SOA had a feral baby raised by the devil himself…” and it’s so true. When the richest girl in town falls in love with the MCs bad boy you expect drama. Well this is that x’s 1000. Epic drama and forbidden love that can’t be tamed by anyone or anything. I absolutely love every word. Every heartbreak. Every dramatic and tragic moment. Every secret and lie. Every dark nook and cranny!!!!
This is the first novella in a five part serial and I can’t wait for whatever comes next. I’m ready for all the intense emotions she will have me feeling.
A great start for this series. I’m intrigued by the serial style of writing, but like the author said, you gotta try something new sometimes. I enjoyed the small glimpse into this new world. Legion is already going to be a favorite! My heart hurts for him and his family but I’m sure EVENTUALLY he will get his HEA. I liked the book but truly appreciate the insight from the author in the EOBS. I love Julie’s books. Some more so than others. And that’s life. But Julie as a person has me on a fish hook and I’ll always come back to see what new story she’s cooking up! I’m excited for this series!
Great characters. It’s hard not to like Legion and Savannah, Mercy and Colt. Marcus and Cash can go just away for their selfishness.
Opposite sides of the tracks. Her the heiress, raised in the public eye by famous parents. Him, on release from prison. No one cares he did not commit the crime, he’s part of a MC crime gang.
The line has been drawn regardless of feelings that developed as they were young children. And there are people who will make sure they never cross the line again…
Whole series review. Wow. This series was phenomenal, but I’m completely broken. The writing was so intelligent and the story multifaceted. Although the ending does leave things unfinished so I’m glad to see there is a second series coming. Each book was short so a fast read and the story moved quickly. My only negative is the FBI book club bit at the end. I just did t get it, (but that’s on me) and reading it kind of then spoiled the aftermath of the book. Will definitely be reading other works by JA Hausa though, her writing style is a breath of fresh air.
I haven't picked up a book from this author in a long while so figured let's try some new books. I didn't realize this book was so short until I later realized its novella series.
It's a good read. Opposite attracts. I have some questions especially regarding the mom hoping that gets answered later on. I'm rooting for this couple hoping they both will want more than just hookups bc they think their upbringing will not allow them to have a real relationship. Can someone stomp out Marcus and Cash and Wyatt please because they're complete douche canoe. Colt is cool he can stay.
Dust and Roses felt like an emotional whiplash. It was dark, messy, obsessive, and somehow still hit me right in the chest. One of those books that leaves you staring in the dirt afterward trying to recover a little.
We're back in the land of JA Huss and I am loving it!!!
This is Legion Kane and Savannah Ashbys story, two people from opposite sides of the track, he's just out of prison, 3 years in a concrete cell and she's still stuck in her prison made of fancy diamonds, expensive horses and being a focal point in social media.
They've had a connection since they were kids, it's a special sort of connection that people can only dream off but their lives just don't mix and this is their story...
I am so beyond excited for this serial! This world of Badlands MC, Savannah and Legion. Mercy and her BB g*n. This is a new world Julie has created and it is amazing. Everyone wants to talk about a "cliffhanger"... instead let's talk about the anticipation between these short releases. It just makes me want to devour them more. As always, Julie's writing is phenomenal. The setup perfection. The build up something you can't stop thinking about!
A great start to this series of 5 novellas. If you enjoy MC books then this is for you. This is a dark gritty story of two worlds colliding, one party where privilege is a given, one where everything is hard fought and not always the right side of the law. But the heart wants what the heart wants and Legion and Savannah have been drawn together like magnets since childhood. As always a cleverly written plot and well developed characters. Really enjoying this.
Savannah is an heiress, Legion is getting out of prison. They are “neighbors” but from different worlds. He would ride his bike to the silo, she would ride her horse. Their bond was epic.
Now she wears another man’s ring. A raw and gritty introduction which will get under your skin, and keep you fascinated.
***** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book *****
This was my first JA Huss book and since finishing it I have met her in person and purchased every book in the series. First off.. she is the sweetest!! This is not your cookie cutter story and I love that. The ups and downs, character development, trauma, I could go on and on. There are 5 books total, all very short. The auther said that she wrote them as a "mini series" and I am here for it. If you liked Sons of Anarchy then this is your jam!
Legion Kane comes from nothing. He’s trouble on a motorcycle. Savannah Ashby has everything she could ever want, except being able to liver her own life. With her future planned out, she can’t help running back to her true love and he can’t say no to her. True love doesn’t always win when money and family are involved.
