As someone currently learning French, this graded reader was a fantastic way to dive into classic literature without feeling overwhelmed. It is incredibly satisfying to be able to say I’ve read Jules Verne, even if it is an abridged version!
The Good:
• Accessibility: The A2 level feels accurate. The sentence structures are simplified enough to keep the reading flow going without constant dictionary breaks.
• Confidence Builder: It’s a great bridge between textbook dialogues and native-level novels. It really helped improve my reading endurance.
The Critique:
• Loss of Detail: Because it is heavily simplified, you do lose a lot of Verne’s signature descriptive style. The story moves very fast, and sometimes the transitions between scenes feel a bit abrupt compared to a full novel.
• Vocabulary: While mostly simplified, the nautical/underwater vocabulary is unavoidable. You will learn words like "submarine" and various sea creatures, which are fun but perhaps not immediately useful for daily conversation.
Overall, I highly recommend this for beginners looking for a challenge that feels like "real" reading.
