2023 Review the setup… New Washington DC Detective Samantha (Sam) Holland reluctantly accompanies her sister Angela to a party she has less than zero interest in going. Per chance, she meets a man, Nick Cappuano, who seems to want to be there even less than she does. They immediately hit it off, surprising them both.
the heart of the story… I read this almost eight years ago after I’d already gotten up to date in the series and Sam and Nick’s encounter was always referenced without any details. Left to my imagination, it didn’t even come close to the reality in this story!
the narration… I love Eva Kaminsky’s voice for Sam and she did justice to her more youthful version. I’m glad I chose to listen to this story the second time around because it made a difference.
the bottom line… Since I’m rereading the series, it all feels new as it’s been over ten years since I first started. I like that it also feels like a clean slate and have this anticipation of what’s next for Sam and Nick. The encounter? They broke the thermometer.
2015 Review Until now, we've only imagined that infamous first encounter between Sam Holland and Nick Cappuano. The real story far surpassed my imagination. The younger Sam is no less brash than who we know today and Nick was just as charismatic then as he is now. Their chance meeting was set up nicely, with banter and steam worthy of these two. I loved it and am glad to have finally seen the start of their wonderful romance.
Now I understand why Sam didn't have a chance of keeping her distance from Nick in Fatal Affair. It puts a whole new flavor on that story.
"Nicholas Domenic Cappuano at your service, but I go by Nick." "So, you're Irish, huh?" Even his laughter was sexy.
Ha Ha, Sam, always the smart-ass.
OK, I love Sam and Nick. I love Sam. She is a real tomboy. Hates dressing up. Doesn't really do relationships. Loved seeing Skip, prior to Book 1. I really must get back to this series. Will get back to proper reviews in a day or two ... if the jet lag doesn't hit me.
Now, I want to re-read the first book to remember what happened when they re-meet.
Hot and steamy! I can't wait to read the first book in the series. These two had an instant connection and that never bodes well for the future in romance land.
The night that started it all for Nick and Samantha! Of course, if you are a devoted follower of the "Fatal Series," you know just how far their relationship has grown and all the changes that have taken place in their lives, along with all the many good times (and bad) that readers have shared with them.
Another fab installment (even though a short one) to this addictive series. Hey - I'll take a page at a time if that's all I can get!
One Night With You by Marie Force Fatal series #0.5. Romantic suspense novella, police procedural. Detective Sam Holland is used to meeting her father at O’Leary’s Bar after a long day at work and discussing cases but this particular night she has to keep it to one beer. She’s agreed to go with her sister to a party although it’s really not something she wants to do. But she puts on a short skirt, heels and finds a corner to occupy. After getting doused accidentally by a beer, a starched white handkerchief appears and she meets Nick Cappuano. Sparks fly and steam follows.
A sexy and steamy story that fans of the Fatal series have been clamoring for. 🎧 I have a copy of this included in the paperback of Fatal Affair (2016) but I also purchased an audiobook version and listened to the performance by Eva Kaminsky who does a phenomenal performance. Whew. Hot and spicy! You can’t help sweating along. Fans of the series will especially love this novella but it can be read as a stand-alone as well. With hints of the job and recurring characters, it’s a back ground filler that shouldn’t be missed. 4.5
Really liked finally getting the deets on Nick/Sam's first meet ;-). Even finding out Peter was creepy (according to Sam's sisters) from the very beginning. A super sexy fast read. Now I'm more than ready for Fatal Frenzy bk 9 after reading the free chapter at the end of the the novella. Anxious for the September release date and more Nick/Sam. =)
This novella is a prequel to the Fatal series. It is about the infamous first encounter of Detective Sam Holland and Nick Cappuano. Though it is very short, this is a must read for fans of the Fatal series.
2023 Re-read: I'm reading series again with a Goodreads group. This time we're reading this novella at the beginning of the series instead of in the middle (when the book was originally written). It's still a good story, but if I hadn't known what was going to eventually happen between Sam and Nick, I don't think I would have been as interested in this story. Still, I enjoyed getting back into Sam and Nick's world. My rating: 4 Stars.
3.5 stars Both Nick and Sam were less intense, which I liked. We meet Peter and see the seeds of his later behavior and we see Skip before he was injured on the job. Lots of humor and sexy times, a pleasant story.

I don´t think this one was meant to be read the first in the series. Definitely not. My mistake, because now I have my doubts about going on with the series. I´m not sure it will be worthy. Because, let´s be realistic, the only way I can buy that they don´t saw each other after that AMAZING night is that a devastation of inconceivable proportions (you know, one of these in which the only survivors are the roaches) took place or that one of them got into Witness Protection Program (and I´m sure I could find a fault to the latter, I´m like that…) So now, I´ll have to wait until I forget about their off-the-charts connection and see if I can believe their second chance. And don´t get me started with Peter. It has left me dumbstruck. Ahh… How I dislike intelligent heroines who can´t see what they have before their eyes. So, to whom it may concern, I wouldn´t read this story the first in the series.
It was really wonderful to read about the night that started it all for Sam and Nick. i loved seeing them meet and develop a great rapport so quickly. Their night together was spectacular, and I understand why they had such memories of it! It was great to see their younger selves, and I really enjoyed the look at their lives at that point. These two wonderful characters were amazing, as usual! I loved seeing Skip before the shooting, and witnessing how much he and Sam enjoyed one another's company. This was a great novella!
This is a very short introduction to the Fatal series. Having read some of the author's other works, this felt grittier...edgier than those other stories. I was intrigued by both main characters, and the secondary characters in the story, wanting to know more about them. I even kept thinking of the TV series Castle as I read it. It was the perfect teaser for the main series, and I can't wait to dive in and see where it goes!
Short, but it fills in the gap. Tells the fans of the series just what we wanted to know about what happened on that first night. The chemistry between Sam and Nick is just as explosive as it in the rest of the series. It makes me want to go back and read book one again to experience that magic of when they first reunite.
Short, wonderful backstory of how Nick and Sam met. It is talked about in the first book in the series and this was a view into the that night. Love the characters, writing and every thing else about this series!
Talk about explosive chemistry! This novella proves they've had it since the beginning. It also proves Sam's ex-husband is an a-hole, but for those that have read the series...we knew that already.
First, in interest of full disclosure I've read the entire series. So coming back to the prequel of Sam and Nick's first encounter I found it to be as sexy, hot and full of chemistry as you'd have expected. Nick is seriously hot, smart and really has a thing for Sam. Which is fortunate for Sam because she definitely has a thing for him.
So for what it was intended to be it totally worked, but there were a few moments that I had an ahh-really moment. Some foreshadowing was included, but there was also moments where her internal dialog was running exactly opposite of what really happens as Fatal Affair will show. Yes excuse me while I enjoy a good eye roll, but I put it all down to hubris on Sam's part, the confidence of being young. Once you read Fatal Affair, you'll get it.... she's a lot more jaded and smarter as the series continues.
This review is not loaded with spoilers, but I did hint at a few things.
Now I was asked would this spoil Fatal Affair having read this first, the answer is slightly. The opening would be spoiled as well as the hints at their one night stand would slowly be revealed in Fatal Affair spoiling reader suspense of those moments. But if you're one to read the ending but still read the book this won't bother you one single bit. Even if you aren't it shouldn't ruin anything, plenty of their first encounter and what followed is part of the charm of Fatal Affair.
Felicity Munroe's narration took a few minutes to adjust to, but I grew to like it. She warmed up to her material as she went along which showed. The series is narrated by the following and I've posted my preferred narrators in order: Eva Kaminsky, Felicity Munroe & Katie Sparer
Finally in my opinion this is a great series for fans of Eve and Rourke of In Death fame. It's what drew me in, it's not quite the same. It feels less heavy than In Death, but it's definitely two professionals very successful with their lives that are draw to each other regardless of how they got there. Both Sam & Nick/Eve & Rourke share incredible chemistry. The cast of both series have you coming back for more. I found In Death to be far more brutal graphically, but it's edgier as well.
Both this series and In Death are worth your attentions. FYI - In Death is narrated by an A++++ narrator Susan Ericksen. So if you give it a try be sure to try a narration.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In brief: It doesn't get much better in novella-land, y'all
Why did I wait so long to start this series?! While I know most fans of the Fatal series started with book 1, I was glad I had the chance to read the prequel that Force wrote many years later before I dove headfirst into Fatal Affair (which, of course, I did after reading this tease!).
For me as a reader, novellas/prequels in general are hard to hit the mark because it is difficult to develop characters and a relationship in such a short time period. This one, however totally worked. I wanted so much more after finishing this "quickie" with Sam and Nick! Thankfully, I had book 1 to open immediately after I finished this :)
If you aren't sure about whether you would like this series, read this before you commit -- you'll be invested and wanting to read on!
Story/Plot --- 5/5 Main Characters --- 5/5 Supporting Characters --- 5/5 Steam Level --- 4/5 Language --- not egregious Violence --- nada POV --- 3rd
I read this after Fatal Affair, and am glad I did. There are comments that make a lot of sense one you know future events, that are questionable foreshadowing here. I thought the two had great chemistry, but decided to hookup incredibly quickly. And they didn't talk or get to know each other enough to justify Nick's carrying a torch for so long or Sam's disappointment in not hearing from him.
I liked her family dynamics, although I think her father was putting on the affection a bit much. After all, she sees him all the time, and it wasn't a special occasion. However, I got a good feeling for the dynamics between Sam and her father and sister. The relationships were full of life and believable.
This is a weird one for me, as we know there's no HEA for Sam and Nick for another six years and a lot of bad stuff happened in between. On the other hand, it's good to hear what happened all those years ago but it does seem a bit strange that they didn't connect after Nick's European trip, especially since he knows where she works and she knows where he lives...
Love this series. Nice to see how Sam and Nick met and that night they spent together. And part where Sam and Skip are talking and joking... Good, short read.
Yes! All kinds of yes! The language, the attitude, the romance, absolutely loved it!
This amazing, entertaining novella features Sam who's a hard working cop for the Metropolitan Police Department. She loves her job especially since she gets to work with her dad who is the chief of police and has taught her everything she knows. Her sister, Angela, decides she wants to go to a party to meet with "the one that got away" and Sam caves to her sister's will because she hasn't seen her happy since a bad breakup before. Sam's expectations of the party are quick. Go in, wing-woman a little, and get out because she works the next day. Through an unexpected encounter she ends up leaving with Nick and having the most exciting night of her life.
This is quite a quick read but I promise it's very, VERY satisfying. Sam is a no nonsense type of girl who tells it how it is but also isn't afraid to be spontaneous because she knows she can take care of herself. Nick comes off as your average, dark mystery man but surprised me as much as he surprised Sam.
This is one novella you could read over and over again because it's just so good! I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series after this small, delicious appetizer.
This is the prequel to Marie Force's series, Fatal. This SS really has nothing to do with the series, other than the two MC's of the series meet one another and get intimately acquainted when they have a one night stand.
They want to know each other more but doubt themselves and move on, leaving the story unresolved. I can assure you though, that these two will meet again in book 01 and be a HUGE part of the series.
So you don't have to read this if ya don't want, or you may decide to read it down the road as a "when they first meet" light read. It's a Smoking Hot story for sure but not much else as far as the series goes.
Overlooked quite a few cheesy expressions used in this novella to give it five stars, but with all the terrible writing in the market these days, One Night With You was a pleasant surprise. Can’t wait to read this entire series.
YES. I so needed a good romance novel with some crime in it, and now I'm in the mood to purchase the rest of this series because you know me- I can't quit a series. It's a mental disorder, I'm sure of it. I also have to tell you that if you are a long time reader here, you know that one of my favorite authors of all time is Linda Howard. I know, sometimes I get an eye roll and sometimes I get an appreciative nod of the head, but she is. I would fan girl in her bushes in her front lawn if I could. But I have to tell you that Marie Force? She's kind of like my new Linda Howard.
I know.
It's a big thing to say but I really liked her writing style and how she crafted the story because it was so reminiscent of what you get with a great Linda Howard book. The bonus is that Linda gives you one, maybe two stories with characters, and Marie is giving us an entire series and I have very little self control so you know these are going to be on my shopping list soon.
Anyways.
The book was SO good. Immediately it begins with the murder of Senator John O'Connor, who was found by his life long friend and assistant, Nick Cappuano. Obviously Nick calls the police and who comes along but Samantha Holland, his one night stand from six years previous that he still thinks about as the one who got away. Sam, who is fresh off of leave from duty after a child was shot under her command and the mental anguish of that, is taken aback at seeing Nick again and it's clear that whatever flame they had that one night, it didn't go away.
So throughout the book we have their simmering sexual tension but we also have this really interesting murder to solve and Marie Force keeps you on the EDGE the entire time. Was it a woman scorned? Political rivals? Jealous family member? Or did John lead a totally secret life and perhaps that's what has happened? Just as things start coming together, Sam's life is threatened by the mother of the deceased child from her previous case but are the threats really from her, or from someone trying to get Sam off the Senator's case?
I flew through this book, I loved the who Law & Order SVU feel of the book, I loved the sexual tension between Sam and Nick, and I am absolutely in love with the fact that this is the start of a SERIES, you guys. A series. You know I love a good series. I'm so excited to read the rest!
The evidence is irrefutable. Thirty and reasonably good looking, decent job, yet still unmarried and unattached... You're either still living with your mother or you've got a weird and disgusting habit like collecting all the belly button lint from your whole life into a baggie or something.
All in all, he'd blown her away, and that wasn't easy to do. Her friends teased her about being "the guy" in every relationship.
Oh, she liked this guy. She liked him a whole lot. As a rule, she didn't really like anyone. She put up with people, especially guys who were usually all talk and no action. This one had the goods to go along with the words. And he was sweet and funny and sexy as hell.
God, he knew what he was doing. He played her like a maestro trained to please her and only her. And wasn't that a terrifying thought? This was supposed to be a one-night thing, and now she was beginning to wonder if he was the guy she'd been meant to find after years of dating all the wrong men. If this one was wrong, she didn't want to be right.
My Review:
My first Marie Force read - so now I see what all the fuss is about. The story was engaging, amusing, and sexy. I am hooked, reel me in!
