Three years of fourteen-hour days and flawless campaigns, and I'm still "the goalie's little sister who got lucky."
The marketing director title should be mine. I've earned it ten times over. But my shot at proving that depends on one impossible Garrett Sullivan.
The press calls him "The Iceman"—six-foot-four of shutdown defenseman who just rolled his eyes at our title sponsor on live television. Now fixing him is my problem—and my only shot at the promotion I've bled for.
He's also my brother's best friend. Professionally dangerous. Personally off-limits.
But the man who stonewalls cameras is someone else behind closed doors. He keeps his grandmother's snow globe collection displayed like sacred relics. He looks at me like I'm someone worth figuring out. And he argues with me like I might actually be right.
Our strategy sessions start running late. Then later. Then into territory where the line between work and want disappears completely.
My brother's ultimatum lands like a End it, or I tell Coach myself.
My boss is building a case to destroy me—and I'm running out of time to stop her.
Garrett wants to protect me. Fight for me. Burn down everything he's built if that's what it takes.
He doesn't see that saving me might cost us everything.
Brother's best friend. Forbidden attraction. Some risks are worth taking.

What I loved most about this book was that Sloane wasn’t just another suit working in marketing for a hockey team, she really knew and loved the game and she was passionate about what she did. I thought Garrett was Mr Moody at first as he and Sloane lock heads over his media persona, but a man who takes the time to care for a sourdough starter can’t be all bad. I enjoyed reading this book as these two clash heads while the tension between them sizzles. Sloane’s supervisor Vivian was a real snake, you can tell she was out for Sloane from the get go, women who sabotage other women are the worse. I liked these two but I thought Sloane was a bit hard on Garrett when everything went down. I really liked Sloane’s friend Brynn and I’m excited for her book next with Torres. I think this book was a very strong start to a new series and I really enjoyed it.
This was definitely a cute insta-love story. I loved Sloane’s determination and independence, and I really respected Garrett’s need to make things right. It is clear the author has a deep understanding of both hockey and business, because when these were discussed in depth, I was lost. I could identify that they were important aspects of the story, but what they meant was lost to me. It was kind of predictable, especially as they fell so early into the story. But the redemption in the last 20% more than made up for it.
Suits and Skates was a fun, fast-paced read that kept me engaged from start to finish thanks to its smooth writing and strong character voice.
While the best friend’s brother trope didn’t fully land for me — they felt more like teammates than close friends — it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
The romance develops quickly, but the pacing of the book makes it easy to stay invested. The story flows really well, making it a quick and enjoyable read despite the sudden escalation.
The third act felt a bit unnecessary in its execution, but I still appreciated the perspective it was meant to highlight and the emotional point the author wanted to make.
One of my favourite aspects of the book was Sloane. I loved her internal monologue and her strategic, analytical way of thinking, which added depth and balance to the romance.
Overall, this is a light and entertaining sports romance with great pacing, a compelling female lead, and an easy writing style that makes it very bingeable.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC and Sena Voss for giving me a chance to dive into this world.
This was a cute book, cute premise and I had a decent time reading it.
One thing that did feel a bit off with me was the corporate writing, it felt kind of machine like when the main character talked about business contexts... That might just be a me problem though.
Overall, it was a fast read and a good palette cleanser.
I am curious to see how her writing style develops with future books.
Suits and Skates by Sena Voss was a solid, enjoyable forbidden romance with a fun mix of corporate drama and pro hockey. I had the chance to read this prior to its release date, and I really liked the workplace angle and the heroine’s frustration with constantly being underestimated — that part felt very real and made her easy to root for.
Garrett worked well as a love interest. He’s not just the typical quiet hockey guy, and the contrast between his public persona and who he is in private added depth. Their banter during strategy sessions was easily the highlight. That said, the pacing slowed in the middle, and some of the same conflicts repeated without moving the story forward much. Once lines started blurring, a bit of the professional tension lost its punch.
Overall, it’s a good read with strong chemistry and familiar tropes done well, even if it didn’t completely wow me. If you like brother’s-best-friend romances with slow-burn tension, this is worth picking up.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice Level: 🌶️1.5 (Low heat, high emotional intimacy)
In a genre often saturated with "mighty hero" tropes and instant physical attraction, Sena Voss delivers a standout narrative in Suits and Skates. This isn't just another hockey romance; it’s a character study on professional boundaries, personal value, and the slow-burn beauty of falling in love with a person’s mind before their jersey number.
With a mild spice level of about 1.5 peppers, this book is perfect for readers who prefer "sweet and salty" over "steam." It prioritizes the emotional "click" between the leads and offers a satisfying look at a woman who knows her worth in a male-dominated industry.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily but that does not change my opinion of the book. I also cannot wait for book 2!
Key Takeaway: A must-read for fans of the "forced proximity" and "forbidden love" tropes who want to see a female lead take the driver's seat in her own life.
Thank you to Victory Editing and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this…..but……I didn’t love this. Let me be frank though, this had the POTENTIAL to be a 5 star read and honestly, I blame the beginning. So first, a small synopsis:
Sloane works for the Minnesota Mammoth in their Marketing Department and dreams of developing a brand that centers around community and the lifelong fan. She’s also the sister of Easton who is the goalie on the Mammoth. Garrett is the grumpy defenseman who can’t be bothered by much, especially the media who want a piece of him at every turn. Sloane is assigned to clean up Garrett’s media image and as she spends more time with him, she realizes there’s so much more behind the scowl. Unfortunately the Mammoth have a strict code of conduct prohibiting relationships between staff and players…. So naturally, you hide in supply closets and make longing looks at each other across rooms, hoping for the best. Well, we all know with the best laid plans…..
On to my review. I liked Sloane, I liked Garrett, I liked their dynamic and chemistry. What I didn’t like? There was NO development in the beginning. First, Garrett and Easton have been best friends for supposedly 15 years and yet, when Garrett sees Sloane, (who also works for the team, don’t forget that part), he says, “you’re Easton’s sister, right?” Umm…. Shouldn’t he be a bit more acquainted with her by that point?
Then, the insta-love. Ok, this was so insta-love, I literally MISSED it! Like, when did they fall in love? He was like holding her cheek, getting ready to kiss her, but…. Didn’t he just meet her? I felt like I missed a whole 30% of the book! Plus, once they’re in love or continuing the “falling”, I was genuinely thinking, “aww, these two are so cute”. So, I would have LOVED to see them actually develop those feelings instead of what we got. The BAM they’re all about each other and they’re willing to risk their livelihoods for each other….but you reader, you don’t get to experience that, you just have to take my word for it. You see the problem here?
If that had been there, if the beginning had been stronger, this easily would have been a 4 to 5 star read as I liked the characters, it was written well and I loved that he stood beside her versus on top of her, (saving her), as in most contemporary romances. The knight in shining armor is great, but it was refreshing that she was able to stand on her own, communicate that, and have a MMC who was able to recognize his failings and fix it because he loves and supports her.
Will I read the next one? Maybe, if I remember to pick it up when it releases. I do overall though, recommend this one for a quick, light hockey romance. It’s not life changing, but it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon.
Suits and Skates by Sena Voss was such a fun, enjoyable read! This book completely delivered on charm, banter, and heart, and it was one of those romances that just felt easy to sink into. From the very first chapters, I was smiling—between the witty dialogue and the clear chemistry, it pulled me right onto the ice (and into the feels). I love that it was also a pretty quick read and was face paced too.
I really enjoyed how the contrast between the characters drove the story. The push-and-pull dynamic was amazing, and watching their walls slowly come down was genuinely satisfying. The romance felt earned, not rushed, and the emotional beats hit in a way that made me root for them hard. There were moments that made me laugh and others that made me pause and go, “okay wow, that was sweet.”
I enjoyed that there was a business/marketing aspect to the story and it was not just a throw away part, there was detail and it was a focus within the book. I love that we get to see a career driven woman who is also still fun, bubbly and gets to have some romance too! Sena Voss knows how to lean into the tropes while still keeping things fresh and engaging.
Tropes you can expect:
💙 Ice Hockey/Workplace Romance 💙 Forbidden Romance 💙 He Falls First 💙 Grumpy/Sunshine
If you’re in the mood for a light, flirty romance with depth, heart, and just the right amount of swoon, this one is definitely worth the read. I flew through it and closed the book feeling happy, which is always a win in my eyes 💖 I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good ice hockey romance!
Suits and Skates was a strong start to the series and more than just a grumpy/sunshine romance.
I loved seeing the business and marketing side of hockey, especially with Sloane in charge. She genuinely knew and loved the game, which made her feel authentic and capable. The chemistry between Sloane and Garrett was undeniable, and the story had more depth than I expected.
I also loved Sloane’s support system toward the end, helping her stand up to her own “Goliath.” I’m definitely looking forward to book two, which will follow Brynn and hockey enforcer Zac Torres.
Thank you to Ms. Voss for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.
It is a cute slow burn hockey romance book. The characters grow not only individually trying to improve but also together.
This books had me intrigued as she was assigned to be his mentor with marketing and he was the grumpy hockey player. Grumpy x Sunshine vibes.
The story plot is highly entertaining with the climax making me want to read the book faster to figure out what the end will look like after learning so much about Garrett and Sloane both characters POV drew me in and made me want to read more.
Tropes : Hockey Star/PR Manager Work place romance Forbidden love Secret relationship Grumpy/Sunshine Hockey romance
Okay so imagine: ✨ grumpy hockey man ✨ workplace proximity ✨ suits, skates, and unresolved feelings ✨ me kicking my feet at 2am
Suits & Skates was a cute, easy, low-stress hockey romance that I absolutely zoomed through. Did it change my life? No. Did it entertain me? Yes. And sometimes that’s enough, besties.
The hockey vibes were solid without drowning me in stats (thank GOD), and the MMC had those soft-but-protective moments that make you go “sir??? excuse me???”. He was definitely the highlight for me. The FMC was likeable, but I did want a bit more depth and emotional ✨oomph✨ from her — I needed the yearning to YEARN harder.
The romance itself was sweet and smooth… maybe a little too smooth. I personally love a little chaos, miscommunication, or emotional damage™️, so I found myself wishing for more tension before we got the payoff.
Spice wise: 🌶️🌶️ Open door, present, polite, respectful. Not feral. Not illegal. Not ruining your sleep schedule. If you like your spice mild and vibes cozy, you’ll be happy. If you’re a “one more chapter until sunrise” girlie because of spice… this might not fully scratch that itch.
Overall, this is a comfort read hockey romance — perfect for when you want something light, cute, and low-angst without needing emotional recovery time after.
Would I reread? Maybe. Would I recommend? Yes — to the right reader. Did I still enjoy my time on the ice? Absolutely 🧊🏒
Read if you love: 🏒 Hockey romances without stat overload 💼 Workplace proximity 💙 Low drama, cozy vibes 🌶️ Mild spice with feelings
Lately, I have been on a serious sports romance kick, and hockey romances in particular seem to be my sweet spot. There is just something about the mix of intensity, vulnerability, and emotional stakes that always pulls me in. When I started this book, I could tell right away that it was going to be one of those stories that keeps you hooked and a little on edge in the best way.
From the very beginning, this story drew me in. I really loved that it is told in first person with alternating perspectives, which made it easy to understand both main characters and their motivations. It is one of those romances where you genuinely want both characters to get what they want, even though the path forward feels complicated and uncertain. That tension kept me turning pages because I truly did not know how everything was going to work out.
I also enjoyed the added layers this story brings to the table. There is a subtle sense of mystery woven throughout, along with a forbidden element that raises the emotional stakes even higher. Those aspects added depth to the romance and made the story feel richer and more engaging.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I loved how everything came together in a way I did not fully expect, and it left me feeling satisfied while still wanting more. Since this appears to be the first book in a series, I am definitely looking forward to picking up the next one and continuing this journey.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
🏒 Hockey Star x PR Manager 💖 Workplace Romance 🏒 Forbidden Love 💖 Secret Relationship 🏒 Brother’s Teammate 💖 Grumpy x Sunshine 🏒 Professional Hockey World
I want to start off by saying I really, really wanted to like this book. I loved the premise - hockey, brother’s teammate, they work together but she’s not just another suit. Grumpy & sunshine, forbidden workplace romance… I was ready for all the angst, the yearning, the whole should we shouldn’t we — but there was none of that.
Instead we get instant love (a trope I can’t stand - I need my romance to be realistic. You’re saying he’s willing to throw his entire professional career away just. like. that?) and no real plot or conflict. I don’t want to spoil too much but I feel like we spend most of the time following board meetings or hockey play by plays. I want good romance in a romance book, but instead we get “every time they touch it’s a spark of electricity.” That was repeated throughout the book, in one form or another. There’s a couple of cute dates sprinkled in but other than that the spice wasn’t even good, sad to say.
I just never connected with the characters, and I could never get invested into them or their story. And trust me - like I said, I really, really, wanted to.
Nevertheless, thank you to Netgalley for the ARC copy.
I wanted to love it but didn’t like it as much as I had hoped. I feel like the level of attraction happened too fast before they got to know each other. 20% of the way through the book they were already risking their jobs when they did not truly know who the other person was outside of her being Easton’s sister and him being a hot but frustrating hockey player. That made it a bit less enjoyable for me. Not bad by any means but not my favorite. I did enjoy the story however, and how they supported one another and learned from their mistakes. Another part that really bothered me is she talked about how protective her brother was all the time of her, but then he told her that she had to choose between him as a brother or her relationship because he would choose the team. And well, yes, he had an apology for her for that comment. It still doesn’t seem like something that he truly protective brother would say so. There were some discrepancies between the way the characters were described, and the way the characters acted in my opinion. That said, I did enjoy the storyline as a whole and would recommend it as a quick easy read for those that love hockey romance.
Also another review said this was a “clean romance” it is not. It’s not heavy in spice but it does have one open door scene. (Maybe a .5-1 on the chilli pepper scale).
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read Suits and Skates.
Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me. While the premise was promising, I finished the book wanting more—especially from the relationship between Sloane and Garrett.
Sloane works in marketing for the Mammoth Hockey Team and is tasked with rehabbing Garrett’s image, as he’s far from comfortable in front of the camera. Their romance is forbidden from the start, with strict rules prohibiting relationships between anyone connected to the Mammoths. The story is told in first person with a dual POV, and there are many well-written moments that give insight into both characters’ thoughts and emotions.
That said, the execution fell short. I struggled with the pacing and some continuity issues, and the emotional buildup to the relationship felt underdeveloped. The tension of sneaking around—a key element of the forbidden romance trope—had real potential but was largely glossed over. Instead of being fully explored, these plot points felt rushed, making the eventual fallout feel abrupt rather than earned.
Overall, a solid idea with some strong character groundwork, but the story didn’t dig deep enough where it mattered most for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I went into it expecting a hockey romance and was very surprised. In the end, the romance is frankly secondary, and it's more about character development, with a romantic subplot.
That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. Sloane is a badass corporate girl, and she's written as a woman who doesn't let herself be pushed around, no matter how many blows she takes. I liked the way she was portrayed. Garrett... I wanted to like him, and I think I would have if there had been more romance.
For me, what made the characters interesting was that they all had flaws. It made them feel very real, and I could picture them all in my head as I read, as clearly as if I were watching a movie. I think it's a story that aims to be “realistic” in its character development.
Don't go into it expecting a super passionate (there's no smut, by the way) and completely unrealistic story like most hockey romances (or even romances in general), but if you want to see Sloane break all the rules in the corporate world, this book is for you!
This was a fun, quick hockey romance with a solid forbidden setup that kept me turning the pages. The workplace tension was definitely the highlight—those stolen moments and quiet longing really worked for me, and the hockey atmosphere added a nice layer to the story.
The chemistry was there, especially in the early build-up, and I enjoyed the “we really shouldn’t but absolutely will” vibes. That said, some moments felt a bit rushed, and I wanted a little more depth in the emotional fallout once things were out in the open. A few conflicts wrapped up faster than I expected, which kept it from fully hitting that emotional punch I was hoping for.
Still, this is a great pick if you’re in the mood for a light, forbidden sports romance with workplace tension, hockey energy, and a satisfying escape.
Perfect for readers who love: 🏒 hockey romance 💼 workplace/forbidden vibes 🔥 slow-burn tension 💙 low-stress, bingeable reads
Would absolutely read more from this author! Thank you Netgalley for this ARC
Suits and Skates by Sena Voss is a solid, character-driven sports romance that leans more into emotional connection and professional tension than high heat. The writing is clean, engaging, and easy to sink into, with a strong focus on relationship dynamics and personal growth. The hockey setting adds a fun, immersive backdrop without overpowering the romance, making it approachable even for readers who aren’t huge sports fans. I especially appreciated the workplace angle and how the story explores ambition, reputation, and being underestimated—those elements gave the romance real stakes and helped ground the story. While the pacing dips slightly in the middle and some conflicts feel a bit repetitive, the banter, slow-burn chemistry, and “he falls first” dynamic kept me invested. Overall, this is an enjoyable, low-spice sports romance with heart, solid writing, and plenty of promise for the rest of the series. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Sena Voss for the ARC. All thoughts, words, and opinions are my own
Suits and Skates is a sweet, character-driven contemporary romance with a strong emotional build and a sporty backdrop.
Sloan is an ambitious, career-driven FMC, and the high stakes around her work felt very relatable. Paired with Sullivan, an elite athlete MMC, their workplace forced proximity leads to natural banter, steady chemistry, and a he falls first dynamic I really enjoyed. The relationship unfolds at a comfortable pace, allowing moments of vulnerability and connection to feel earned rather than rushed.
The sports element is well integrated without overpowering the romance, making this a great read even for those who aren’t big sports-romance readers. The spice level is low, with the focus firmly on emotional connection.
While the pacing dipped slightly in places, I was fully invested by the end and satisfied with their journey. A lovely pick for readers who enjoy contemporary romance with heart, slow emotional build, and a sporty edge.
*Received the ARC from Sena Voss. All opinions are my own. * 3.5 ⭐️
First off, I want to thank Sena for the opportunity to read and review this book early. I enjoyed the dynamic between Garrett and Sloane. There were many tropes in this book that I usually gravitate towards such as forbidden love, forced proximity, and workplace romance. The one thing that stands out to me about this book is the emotional maturity that the MCs have. Sloane knew exactly what she wanted for herself. She stood her ground and explained her thoughts to Garrett. There was no miscommunication or silent treatment with no resolution. Garrett took the time to listen and understand her explanation and in turn was able to support her the way she needed him to. Overall a great book and I would recommend it to those that love the tropes mentioned.
Read this if you like: □ forbidden romance □ workplace romance □ he falls first □ forced proximity □ grumpy x sunshine
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
One of my reading goals this year was to read more romance, especially sports romance.
I read the blurb on Netgalley and thought, well this sounds really good! And that cover is so pretty. I really enjoyed this story!
I love the main characters, Sloane and Garreth. Sloane is such an extraordinary business woman. And Garreth, sweet Garreth, the golden boy hockey player. I really liked their relationship and how they respect each other, be there for each other, even if they have to keep their relationship secret cause workplace romance is strictly forbidden. I could not put this book down!
Highly recommend this if you are a fan of sports romance!
This was an enjoyable read with a strong workplace romance angle and a heroine who was easy to root for. I especially liked that Sloane is knowledgeable about hockey and genuinely passionate about her career, which made her professional struggles feel realistic and engaging.
Garrett was a solid love interest, and the contrast between his public image and private personality added depth to their dynamic. Their interactions and gradual connection were the highlight of the story.
Overall, this is a strong start to a new series with good chemistry, relatable career tension, and a satisfying character-driven romance. I’m looking forward to continuing the series.
Thank you to the author for providing an advance copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.
This was a solid, easy read that I flew through in no time. The characters were likeable and easy to root for, and one thing that really stood out was how clearly the author knows hockey. The FMC actually sounded smart and knowledgeable about the sport, not like a walking marketing cliché, which was refreshing. The MMC hit that classic combo of broody but secretly sweet, and I enjoyed his dynamic with the FMC.
That said, the romance did lean a bit too hard into instalove for my taste, and the overall plot was fairly predictable. Nothing was bad, but there weren’t many surprises along the way either.
Overall, this was an enjoyable, low-effort hockey romance with good characters and authentic sports knowledge. Even with its predictable moments, it was still a fun ride and a nice pick if you’re in the mood for something light and comforting. 🏒💙
Sena Voss wrote an interesting, enjoyable romance, featuring strong women navigating a mans world, with a I can fix my own problems attitude. Sloane an independent, passionate and determined women. Garret “Tank” moody, grumpy, loyal teammate but hides a caring side. Suits and Skates is a sports romance with a forbidden love and brothers best friend troupe, though I didn’t really feel the best friend vibe, it was more a teammate, missing another layer to the forbidden aspect. At times, the story dragged and slowed, with a questionable insta-love element. The detailed marketing aspect was intriguing and the chemistry between Sloane and Garret was swoon worthy. A recommend novel for fans ice hockey romances. 3 stars I would like to thank the author, Maple and Mountain Publishing LLC and NetGalley for my copy of this novel, in exchange for my honest review. #SuitsandSkates #NetGalley
2026.3 I received this as an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for a review...
I had a hard time connecting to this couple, the MMC specifically. I didn’t feel the connection between the two, given that he is supposedly her brothers best friend of 15 years and all of a sudden they are madly in love out of nowhere and willing to risk it all… The writing because repetitive. The FMC was likeable enough but her reaction and outburst at the end didn’t seem to fit her character.
This one just wasn’t for me. It was a quick read and a good option for a palate cleanser.
Thank you NetGalley for this opportunity. Even though this wasn't my cup of tea, I do enjoy reading new to me authors. :)
I *love* hockey romances, so when I was given the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy of this, I was in! Also, the workplace angle added another angle to the story.
Enemies-to-Lovers is not my favorite trope, but it worked here. The addition of a forbidden romance angle (he’s her brother’s best friend) also added a new direction for the book to take.
This was a cute and sweet hockey/work romance. The MMC was particularly good with good character depth. I wanted a little more from the FMC, but definitely could relate to her feelings of unfair work practices.
Overall, I would recommend this book, especially if you like hockey men who love their women well.
Thanks to NetGalley & Maple & Mountain Publishing, LLC. For the Advanced reader copy.
This was very insta-attraction/insta-connection which is not my favorite. But then also felt like the romance was a sub-plot after about halfway through. Sloane is trying to clean up Garrett’s image and lock in her place in marketing for the team. Garrett just wants to be left alone. From their very first meeting they were about to kiss and it just felt weird. Like no connection or build at all. Her brother being immediately concerned that they’re gonna bone & fall in love was so strange. Like this is her literal job?? This story is more about Sloane overcoming being a woman in sports than anything else.
