I thought speed dating would be a harmless way to kill an evening. Five minutes of small talk, a couple of polite smiles, and I’d go home with a funny story.
Then he sat down in front of me.
Theo. Dark eyes, cocky grin, broad shoulders that did terrible things to his shirt. He didn’t bother with small talk. He leaned in, looked me up and down, and said in a voice like smoke, “I already know how this is going to end. You, flat on your back, begging me for more.”
Not exactly subtle. Definitely not boring.
I laughed it off, but he kept showing up after the bell, brushing past me with that infuriating smile, and making comments that should’ve sounded ridiculous—except he backed them up with a gaze that promised he meant every word.
It wasn’t until later I found out why he came on so Theo isn’t just bold, he’s a werewolf. And apparently when a wolf decides you’re his, no five-minute timer in the world is going to stop him.
I went in expecting a few awkward chats and maybe a drink or two. I left with a man who swears he’s going to devour me… and God help me, I think I’m going to let him.
In addition to the fact that this book switches up what werewolf lore is used again, there are a few things in it that don't make a lot of sense. For instance, in most of the books in the series, the werewolf MC waits at least a month before revealing to their human partner that they're a werewolf. This MC tells the other before their second date but after they've slept together, so it seems not only soon but a bit disingenuous. After that, the entire relationship seems to move at the speed of light, and the human MC only has a few doubts about it that are gotten over extremely fast. The other part that I found strange is that when Theo takes Caleb to meet his pack for the first time, at the full moon run, the Elder's mate, Luna, tells Theo that the moon fever is hitting him really badly this time around. Theo tells Caleb that for werewolves, his pheromones would be absolutely reeking, which seems to be why Caleb thinks he looks fine but other werewolves notice otherwise. Later that same night though, Luna tells Caleb that she's human. So, if she's human, how would she able to tell anything about Theo's moonfever? If it's a pheromone thing that involves a werewolf's sense of smell, then how would a human be able to gauge anything about it even with all the years she's been mated to a werewolf? Anyhow, I also felt like the character development was really lacking in this very fast-paced story, so it's a 3 star read for me.
It felt very hoax-y and fast moving but in an awkward way. The way that werewolves were portrayed and the pack worked wasn't like other shifter books that I've read and their dynamic felt stilted and weird. They spoke in a very ominous way about the two MMC's relationship to the human in the relationship and I'm not sure that I would have stayed around if I were him. They spoke to him almost in a kind of warning or telling him off. The spice also didn't counteract how awkward the whole dynamic was, I would rate it like a 1.5/5 peppers on the spice scale. Liked how quickly the story moved along, but it wasn't an easy read necessarily as I had to kind of force myself to make it through, despite the story only being less than 200 pages. I do like how the author tried to put a kind of new and unique spin on shifters, I appreciate the desire to be different, how it was done just fell a little flat for me.
The story itself is simple and cute. Solid 3.5/5 stars, but putting 4 stars since I can't do 1/2 stars
There are a few inconsistencies- like humans can't become werewolves (even though one of the earlier books said they could take a bite, but it was very painful, they get a fever, and the humans didn't always survive), and that transforming doesn't ruin clothes (though other books of the series indicated them getting undressed specifically to not ruin their clothes)
Incredibly cute and the humour is top notch. Not your typical wolfy romance and a bit repetitive in places BUT an enjoyable read nonetheless! Theo is a man who knows what he wants and I eat that sh*t up 😌
I liked this book. 3.5 stars for eating, 2.5 for spice. Theo was definitely persistent and direct. The pack characters were nice and I liked that there were other humans Caleb could talk to.
