Mated to the Alpha Squad

Rate this book
I thought I was giving a spa day to three very large, very grumpy stray dogs. Turns out, I was accidentally claiming the city’s most dangerous Alpha pack.

My name is Penny, and I’m the best dog groomer in the tri-state area. I can tame a biting Chihuahua with a look and turn a matted mess into a show pony in under an hour. So, when three massive, majestic wolves wandered into my shop looking like they’d been dragged through a sewer, I didn’t call Animal Control.

I called for the premium blueberry shampoo.

I scrubbed them. I blow-dried them. I may have put a jaunty little bandana on the biggest one. And then… I found The Spot. You know the one. That magic little nerve ending behind the ear that makes a dog’s leg kick?

Well, apparently, when you hit that spot on a shifter stuck in wolf form, it doesn’t just make their leg kick. It accidentally triggers a soul-deep mating bond. Whoops.

Now, three gorgeous, intense, and terrifyingly familiar men are stalking my shop.

Rowan: The brooding Alpha who glares at me like he wants to devour me (and is definitely hiding the fact that I put a pink bow on him yesterday).
Knox: The stoic Enforcer who keeps "accidentally" breaking things just so I have to come close to fix them.
Jax: The chaotic wild card who looks at me with puppy-dog eyes and practically begs for head scratches in the middle of the waiting room.

They’re undercover agents who should be focusing on a drug bust, but all they can focus on is me. They need to break the bond before they lose their badges, but their inner wolves have other ideas. They don’t just want a groomer. They want a mate.

And they’re willing to get down and dirty to prove they can be very good boys.

Mated to the Alpha Squad is a MMMF Reverse Harem romance featuring a heroine who takes no nonsense, three possessive wolves who are really just oversized puppies, and a guaranteed HEA with plenty of purring... er, growling.

The cover is a little deceiving. The men portrayed do not shift into that but actual wolves and since people do judge a book by its cover I think that’s actually an important distinction for those looking for monster romance.

This was insta mate which I’m usually not a fan of but I knew going into it that’s what I was reading and I didn’t mind it in this. The guys were fun and the FMC was as spunky but I also found her slightly irritating. I get wanting independence but to be fighting for that as your life is in danger made me question her intelligence. It was a light, easy read. The ending however felt so damned rushed and fell flat. I get it’s a cozy read but damn. We get all this, your life is in danger and action scenes all for a- “the bad guy was caught” type epilogue. The ending just needed to be more fleshed out.

There were actually a few instances in this book where I think a second look would have been helpful. I had to read several areas twice because logistically they just didn’t make sense. Like one scene where Jax is getting his hair washed in the sink and she’s worried because water is dripping onto his Henley so of course he takes his Henley off to expose his bare chest. Soooo you’re saying a few drops of water getting on his shirt was worse than pulling it off over soaking wet hair? And the way it was written it doesn’t even sound like the author thought of it that way. More like he was removing a zip up hoodie or something. It was worded weird and logistically made absolutely no sense. And that wasn’t the only time to have a book so short have several of these instances honestly makes me leery to read more by the author.

If you’re going into this for the sex bc it’s advertised as MMMF, you may be disappointed. There are 2 sexual scenes with separate guys and 1 scene with all of them but nothing more than a kiss between 2 guys. As why choose goes it was extremely mild. I didn’t mind it, I don’t need a ton of sex but since it was advertised as MMMF I was expecting to see more of the relationship between the men who have been together for years. Overall though I enjoyed the cozy read.

The story was cute, but felt a bit hurried in places. It could do with more editing, too. Almost in every chapter, Rowan sighed or did something with fondness, and Penny thought something should alarm her, but it made her feel safe and protected.
Also, the cover is so cute, it was a bit disappointing that the guys were normal humans or normal wolves.
Penny insisted that she wanted to be independent and think things through before making a decision when she was in danger, and the only smart thing to do would be to accept the offer of safety, which made her feel a bit unintelligent at times. Then we had some action, but the big bad never appeared in the book; we only learn from the epilogue that he was caught and everything is great again.
Another thing, I liked the guys; they were all distinct and sweet in their own ways, but there should be more of them together. They were supposedly in a relationship for years, and we only saw two of them kiss once. Then the smut wasn't very reverse harem-y, we got Penny with Knox once (not even full intercourse), and with Jax (that at least was a sex scene), and when they were finalizing their bond, she only had sex with Rowan. I've never before read a reverse harem novel with only one-on-one encounters, especially one where the boyfriends are boyfriends too.
So it could be better, but I liked the premise and the guys ;)

This was my first Ella Hartwell book. It was a really good palate cleanser as I tend to read pretty dark books. Penny is a caring and very popular groomer. When she finds three wolves muddy outside why wouldn't she decide to wash them and put a pretty pink bandana on the biggest one? Apparently scratching behind their ears, however, starts a journey she wasn't expecting, but was very much needing whether she knew it or not.
Those 3 wolves? Shifters that work for the government. Rowan, Knox, and Jax are a pack in their own, but they have finally found their fourth. Penny rounds out this group where everyone has their place but also such different personalities that perfectly work with one another.
I love the new lore of how mating bonds can form in this book and it was a new way to see it for me. This was low angst, which I very appreciate, and no OW or OM drama. Penny added the loving touch these guys needed, but also they had that themselves as well. That's what I like is that they're all written as complements of one another, not that anything was truly lacking, but instead completed. This was refreshing and well-written.

EDIT TO ADD
Having just reread the book preview/overview... I want it stated that one, the overview is more interesting to read than the actual book itself, and two, a bunch of crap in the overview didn't even happen in the book! And because of that, I'm changing my review to 2 freaking stars. What reader wants to pick up a book, excited by the premise and preview, only for it to be completely different than the actual book?? Do better, authors.

Ehh 🤷‍♀️ 3 stars because I didn't hate it... I was just bored. Less than 200 pages and I actually felt my eyes drifting close not even halfway through.
Nothing really happened. The ending felt rushed, the characters felt very flat, there was a lot of repeating similar diologue, the little spice there was wasn't anything to blush at, there were a couple of continuity errors... Idk it was just a book, ya know? Was it "Wattpad" bad? No. Will I ever read this book or anything from this author again? No.
If you're looking for a quick read, light hearted, fluffy, RH shifter romance with with no angst and no danger (and really no meaty storyline), then sure, have a go with this one.

First of all, and I know this has no bearing on the writing, but why are there wolf anthropomorphs on the cover if the MMCs only shift between full wolves (barking, four legged) and human? I liked the cover and the blurb seemed like my cup of tea. I really wanted to love this more but I just couldn't. It was very fast paced and the world building was extremely minimal. The main bad guy didn't even appear and the threat just "disappeared," some small plot points were dropped, and I just didn't like Penny. I did like how she accepted they're shifters almost right away, but she was incredibly frustrating. She wanted her independence and didn't like being bossed around but that resulted in her almost compromising her own security. It was a cute story, but it just didn't hit for me.

Cute and funny short read

Great intro to this author for me. I thought the book had enough danger and suspense to add to the plot but the main story is focussed on the romance. There's some spice and it's not closed door but it isn't explicit either if that matters for you. The characters all had their own defined personalities and smiled a lot. The fact that she had to come to terms with things she said to them in their wolf firms, not knowing shifters even existed let alone she was talking to some, like how knox has the most boopable nose was my fav. The shifters in this world are either wolf or human in form, tho, not like the cover has.

Penny, Rowen, Knox, and Jax

This is a very good, well written, Wolf Shifters/Human RH romance. Penny owns her dog grooming shop and finds three very muddy, very large ‘dogs’ outside when she arrives for the day and decides to give them baths. The next day, she has three very good looking men tell her they were wolves not dogs. They are with the supernatural FBI. This story is ‘filled with danger overcome, bonds forged, and love discovered in the most unlikely of circumstances’. Read and enjoy.

The premise of the story was cute. A groomer, Penny, comes across three large dogs, in fact wolves not dogs, and somehow ends up accidentally mated them 🐺 🫧 🧼

The story overall is cute and has some funny moments but I wanted more. The story moves fast and I did not get enough of all three of the main guys with Penny. I was also confused how the guys communicated with Penny in their wolf forms.

This short story would be good for readers that want a very quick introduction to alphas and harems. Also, the spicy level of this book is on the lower end. I'd rate it 2/5 in spice 🌶️

wish it was longer

wolf shifters , cozy romance , insta mate , insta lust , portrayed as mmmf but there was only one scene and it was a kiss so no actual mm in this book , especially since the males were together for awhile before they met her how was explained , i actually expected to be scenes with just the males like most books but there was not, wish it was longer like the story was just getting good then epilogue , read 4 starts cause i did laugh a couple times and actually enjoyed the book

Dog Groomer for the Alpha Squad

What a cute meet. She is met at the door by 3 very dirty large "dogs", so she allows them in, cleans them up and even puts a scarf around the neck of the largest. Then finds out the next day they are wolf shifters and she is their fated mate. I enjoyed the storyline as she became aware of the bond, excepted it and the three of them. After a dangerous scare they got their HEA.

Well Styled

Big dirty dogs? No problems here.

Tropes

- Shifter
- Insta-mate/love
- Why Choose

The bravest dog groomer gets a shock of her lifetime when three big dogs turn out to be three wolf shifters. Truly a grooming session of a lifetime since she accidentally starts the bonding process. BY PETTING ONE. I found that to be hilarious. The story is short, sweet, and not too spicy. Can easily consume this is one sitting.

This was a super cute over the top fated mate story. I love the distinct traits and personalities of each of the men. I believe it’s supposed to be a MMMF group but besides one kiss between two of the men it was MFMM the entire time. I’d like to see more of them in the future, maybe a small holiday novella that shows more of the overall pack dynamic.

Short and Sweet

Loved, loved, loved the vibe of this book. It was such a fun and engaging read, and the dynamic between the characters really pulled me in. The concept had so much potential and kept me interested the whole time.
My only wish is that there had been more story and development to fully explore everything that was set up. It felt like there was so much more that could have been expanded on.
Overall, a great read that I genuinely enjoyed—I just wanted more.

Even wolves like ear scratches

Dog groomer Penny, finds 3 very large muddy dogs outside her shop one morning. She brings them in from the rain and bathes them. After their grooming she loves them up with pets and ear scratches. Those ear scratches mean something different to wolves. She finds out what the next morning.

Sweet as can be

This is a low spice reverse harem romance, but it was a nice palette cleanser after reading some darker romance. A dog groomer meeting her mates unknowingly and giving them a bath and a pink bandanna? So cute. The story progresses quickly and avoids too much angst or ugliness and it’s a sweet love story.

Drugs, Murders, Slight Romance

Am not sure I want to follow this Author because of violence and drug cartel ring. Lack of romance and relationships development. Honestly, this is not a story of meaningful romance. The intimate scene was pretty lacking of reverse harem passion and creative heat.

This book was a short and easy read. The storyline was good but not the main focus of the book, and I think that’s exactly what I needed. I was able to finish this book in a couple of hours, and it didn’t feel like it dragged on. I loved all of the characters, and genuinely enjoyed reading this book.

Lighthearted and swoon worthy

So this is my first book by Ella and I read ALOT of smut. This was light on the smut but heavy on the laughs and I couldn’t get enough. It was short and to the point and you know what I fell in love with it. Can’t wait to read more from Ella especially if I’m going to be smiling the whole time like I was reading this one.

I knew going into this book that it was a fast burn/insta-love story. I prefer the fast burn/insta-love stories that don't feel like thats' what I'm reading. This book was so fast that to me all the intimacy felt not only extremely rushed but also forced.

it was a cute story. It lacked depth, there was some continuity errors (ie: someone was a "civilian art teacher" then later was said to have worked in "the bureau records department". that was the biggest one. but there plenty.

This was cute

It was a cute, quick read. The characters are cute. The story is good. I was prepared for it to be full length and not a novella. I wish we had gotten to see the bad guy brought to justice or their time in seclusion.

Short but sweet.

I liked how although it was a short read, it still delivered in making me feel good about their love story. All the happiness rolled into an animal groomer and three protective werewolves.

Nice Story / Needs More

I loved the concept and characters but some parts didn’t make sense. And the ending felt rushed. Everything wraps up in the Epilog. I would have also liked a longer into with more time during the grooming/meet cute. Solid 3/5.

Nice short one to begin the year. Though I would have preferred more action scenes evolving around them & Dimitri. Still an ok story to ring in 2026.
