A couple of years ago some guy suggested I read Prison School the manga. I don’t know this guy personally so I just assumed he was telling me about another manga like Morning Glories. They are both about a boarding school and a secret society. However, Prison School is sort of like reading a teen boys wet dream. I received this manga as a gift from a friend and fellow YouTuber. She mentioned that is is actually considered erotica. So it sat on my shelves until I needed another book break.

Prison School like I said is about a boarding school and a secret society. It has been run for over 50 years. It has always been a girls only school, until this year. They’ve allowed 5 boys into the school of 1,016 girls. What the boys don’t know is that there is the Student Shadow Council that keeps the girls from talking to boys and now vice versa. Being boys... the 5 only have their sights on talking to these females. Unfortunately they get caught and sentenced to a month in prison. The prison is on campus snd they spend their after school hours beautifying the outside. Our main character Kiyoshi is trying to figure out a way to escape. We end there on a cliffhanger.

I have to say... I’m not really interested in the barely there clothes, the giant cartoonish boobs or the amount of panty I see on each page. However, I am actually interested in finding out if Kiyoshi escapes. If he does, does he get caught? Damn plot is actually interesting lol.

Prison school is one the dumbest Manga I've EVER read. It's also extremely funny.

So these 5 boys go to all girls school and then since they become known as peeping toms go into a prison created by the girls. This prison for them is guarded by sexy women who beat the shit out of them whenever they say or do something bad. This first volume really focuses on our main characters trying to adjust to school life, go out on a date, and escape from the prison.

This is so stupid. The story makes no sense. It would never happen.

We got that out of the way, right? Now talking about the humor. It's really funny. From physical humor to great dialogue. All the characters are over the top but really entertaining. Also the art is great, and of course if like Fan Service, you're about to see a ton of ass and tits.

Dumb as hell? Oh yes, very much so. Funny and entertaining throughout? Oh yes, very much so. A 4 out of 5.

Being an adult, one of the big things I have to say about this manga before jumping in to what it is about, is that the humor is added both visually and verbally, and I have choked out laughing multiple times per volume (there are four volumes current in North America which consist of two of the Japanese volumes each. Since there are 22 Japanese volumes, there will be 11 North American volumes. Volume 5 is scheduled for release in November, 2016). And it's not even that some of the imagery is vulgar, but just the way some of the facial expressions are drawn is enough for a tumult of laughter. Also, the scenarios that the boys are placed in are absolutely hilarious.

Disclaimer: While I would call this pornographic comedy, and there are definitely lots of pornographic images, there is no intercourse in the series (at least up through volume four, which is as far as I have read thus far in the North American release).

So what is this hyped up adult manga about? An all girls boarding school is finally allowing boys in! Only five boys are admitted-Kiyoshi, Takehito, Shingo, Joe, and Andre-and the girls are not thrilled! Any infraction of the school rules results in a stay at the school's prison. For this school, and kind of perversity is an infraction. When the five boys are caught in a plan of peeping, they are sent to the prison run by the Shadow Student Council. It is the goal of these women to sexually frustrate these boys, punish them with gross food and harsh manual labor, and eventually get them to do something that would be deemed bad enough for expulsion.

While for mature audiences, the scenarios that the author comes up with are ridiculous and well-positioned for a real laugh-out-loud moment while reading. The facial expressions add to the comedy, and it is the poor fates that these five boys suffer through that really gives this manga its humor.

I would highly recommend this manga for anyone who is not easily offended and who has their own crude sense of humor.

Oh.
My.
God.

I cannot believe this exists.

It's just your typical high school story about peeping, false imprisonment, forced labor, sadomasochism, water sports, pornography and homophobia.

It is purely tasteless and entirely wrong.

I cannot believe I sort of want to read the next one.

Wait, there have been 25 volumes of this released in Japan?!?!

Oh!

Well here we are. You start reading JoJos, you end up reading lewd femdom manga. I don't know what I have to say for myself, but I CAN say this book is pretty fucking funny. Just lots of absurd humor and endless (well illustrated!) femdom fanservice. It's pretty fun. I'm going to read more. You can't stop me. I mean, there's some real drama and tension here.

Prison School Vol. 1 is mostly a set up of the world in which the story takes place yet it keeps you engaged throughout. This is the best kind of fan service I've read because it has a narrative, dramatic and a comical effect. The art gives you everything you may hope for but what makes you read more are actually the characters and the hilarious scenarios. It's brilliantly writing. Rating: 4.5/5

Ever heard the phrase: Sex sells?

I’m sure you have, but I don’t think you’ll ever find a case more brazen than Prison School. Having spawned an anime adaption this past summer, Prison School is a manga that is just… something else and has left people very divided over its content. Lots of people love it, hate it, or are just downright fascinated. Let’s take a look and try to understand ourselves. Is it good?

To get the obvious out of the way, Prison School Vol. 1 is not for everyone. It’s one of the most crude and lewd books I have ever read (Sex Criminals had actual sex scenes in it and I feel this series, having no sex, is somehow even more inappropriate). This is the kind of manga that makes you wonder how it got licensed and translated in the first place. That being said, Prison School is also one of the most memorable books I’ve read in quite a while and if you get what the creator is going for and are not turned off by the content, this could be the manga for you.

Most of the setup in Prison School requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, such as the concept of the prison school itself and the shadow student council. These points either make no sense when you think about them, even when the creator tries justifying and explaining how they work, or are given very flimsy excuses for why everyone just goes along with the situation. For instance, the main reason the main characters end up in the titular prison school and are forced to do hard labor is because of they were peeping on the girls in their regular school. The forced labor and being locked up is a violation of their rights, like one of them points out, but they go along with it because they don’t want to be expelled or for their parents to find out. While I get them being fearful of what their parents would do to them, it’s a weak excuse and there’s many ways for them to get out of this situation. As such, regardless of the sexual and gross content, it may be too hard for someone to buy into what the series is selling.

Otherwise, the narrative itself is your typical prison escape story. It goes through a lot of the motions you see with the characters figuring out a plan of escaping, running into many kinks and problems along the way, and gathering the equipment they’ll need. However, writer Hiramoto brings plenty of clever twists and turns (especially the last chapter of the volume). How Kiyoshi and Gakuto, the two protagonists trying to plan their escape, solve a lot of their problems or how things just coincidentally work out often involves very crude and gross humor. For example, how do they remove the one girl who is put on charge of watching them where they happen to be carving a hole in a wall to escape? One of them ends up peeing on her (as weird as it sounds, it somehow makes sense in context). There are more moments like that as well and if there’s anything positive to say, everything is pretty unexpected and at the least, very memorable.

Now let’s get to elephant in the room: the fanservice. Like I said at the beginning, this is a very explicit and at times, graphic manga when it comes to sexuality. There’s never any sex or form of sex happening (though plenty of imagery that is reminiscent of sex), but almost everything else is fair game. It focuses a lot on the girls’ bodies, with close-ups of the crotch and breasts in tight to exposing outfits or even nudity (though the book seems inconsistent in terms of switching between regular nudity and Barbie-Doll nudity), with occasional focus on male’s bodies as well. Beyond that, there’s also a lot of fetishism going on with masochistic tendencies and bodily functions to name a few. It’s material that, even if you are pretty comfortable with sexuality and the human body, really gets uncomfortable, gross at times (especially if the artist draws the characters sweating), or just flat out embarrassing. It can be a big turnoff for most and I don’t blame people who end up being repulsed by what they are seeing.

On the other hand, that’s what the the mangaka is going for: all of the sexual content and imagery is usually played up in a silly and over the top manner. The fanservice and characters’ behaviour conflicts majorly with the tone, artwork, and most of the story — making this book feel utterly insane and odd — but in a way that ends up making things kind of funny and amusing. Ultimately, that’s Prison School — a manga that is intentionally made to have two tones that are diametrically opposed and constantly conflicting with one another, resulting in a very fresh, very unique comedy overall. Again, the approach is not going to work for everyone even if you understand the point the creator is trying to make, but it does help you to better understand the possible creative process at work here.

Moving on, let’s focus on the characters for a second. Almost everyone is a terrible human being besides Chiyo, who is probably the sweetest and most normal person, in the entire series. All of the guys are huge perverts, rather stupid, and not particularly pleasant to read about. Kiyoshi is probably the best of the bunch, since he acts the most normal and nicest of the group (though he has some questionable moments as well). All of the girls, besides Chiyo like mentioned, are very abusive and violent individuals, each detestable in their own ways. None of the cast are particularly fleshed out as well, besides maybe Mari, the shadowy student council president (most of the issues she exhibits daddy issues that possibly explain her hatred towards guys). Because of that, it makes it hard to really care about anyone or be invested in their character at this point.

Then there is the humour of the book. Like I said, Prison School contrasts its serious side against the weird, gross ridiculous fanservice side, and that’s where the majority of the humour comes from. Most of the time, for me at least, the humour misses the mark for many reasons. Sometimes it’s too forward and gross to work ( the peeing situation going on in the story); other times it’s too inappropriate and isn’t clever, especially when it comes to joking about serious topics (prison rape is not funny). The timing is off as well, or the jokes make no sense given the situation or the character (Meiko’s “riding” punishment for instance, since she should know better that it wouldn’t work very well as punishment given to other characters). However, there are moments where the humour does come together, like the Chairman’s attempts to hide his porn collection (while looking completely intense the entire time). Other instances of humour include the characters’ facial expressions, the physical comedy and the occasional goofiness (like when Gakuto tries explaining how he and three of the other guys are like a four-leaf clover to someone). So overall, some funny spots that are weighed down by the crudeness of others. (And some surprisingly violent female on male abuse that’s more unnerving than funny.)

Lastly, there is the artwork and frankly, it’s the best thing about this series. Akira Hiramoto’s art is incredible looking and really refined, with so much detail and skill put into every page and panel. The characters are very distinct and unique looking from one another, from their body types to their faces to even their movement and postures. The locations are drawn well and the layouts make the panels flow well from one to the next. The action, mostly physical comedy, always looks intense and brutal. Despite its content, it’s a gorgeous looking book and I do wish Hiramoto moves onto drawing books of a more serious nature in the future.

Prison School Vol. 1 is quite possibly one of the most unique mangas that has come out this year, but it is also one that is certainly destined to be a niche title. It’s not something for everyone due to its content and type of humour. Even beyond that, the characters and the amount of things you’ll just have to run with may make this even more unappealing for some. However, for those who like the sound of what they’ve read from this review or like this type of humour, there may be something here for them. Overall, it’s a series that knows exactly what it is and if you get it or like this type of content for other reasons, I recommend the manga. Otherwise, just stay away.

Prison School is available from Yen Press. An anime adaption of the series has just finished its run in Japan and is currently being dubbed by Funimation (though the quality of the dub is under scrutiny currently from fans and critics alike). Another series by Akira Hiramoto, Me and the Devil Blues, was translated and brought over by the now defunct Del Rey manga division. If you can track down a copy, the series is definitely worth a shot.

This story was just too funny. It's amazing how dramatic and ridiculous this story can be. The art is clever, although some of the digital shading is dull. The figures are rendered well and poses and expressions are used to an astounding effect. I especially love Gakuto and Hana. The Hana sub-plot is hilarious.

I was disappointed that the artist couldn't even draw a penis!!! what the hell is that bullshit, after all the main characters were the women in charge and the boys who find themselves at a girl school. I guess I know who the target market is for this graphic novel... immature penis phobic boys. bah💩

This one was not up to my expectations.

It made me giggle several times, I'll give it that, but it was not enough to make me enjoy it overall.

There is a specific character that talks in old English, which is annoying as hell.

Maybe I was not in the right mood for this manga but I kinda had to force myself to finish it.

The art is good though. Simple but on the spot.

This is a manga that I started with great interest but ended up hating it simply because the story has been a plain failure and many of its characters wasted.

The plot: It started off with an interesting setting and exciting story with lots of hilarious plot twists. Even though the plot is a bit extreme, the comical effect still draws readers in. However the story completely loses its focus after the end of Sports Day. It seems that the author has created multiple story lines but could not decide which one to focus on. This lingers until the very end, which the story stops abruptly, and resolve only ONE plot line in a very BAD way.

The characters: the author has created several unique characters. Some of them are arguably extreme, but it contributed to the comical effect of the story. But as the author lost control of the story, he has also lost control of his characters. Some of them (eg. Lisa, Andrew, Chiyo) became OOC, others simply lose their uniqueness. What's more, some of the new characters are redundant and annoying (eg. Bitch sempai).

The author has started off with an interesting story, but completely ruined it after 2/3 of the story. He further pissed me off with the ending, which has only completed one plotline and leave its main character OOC (because Chiyo's change in personality is not well-explained). This is the only time that I've ever regretted reading a book.

Prison School Volume 1 is an outrageous, unapologetically raunchy introduction to one of the more unique premises in manga. The story kicks off with five boys being enrolled in a previously all-girls school—and quickly getting themselves in trouble in the most absurd way possible. What follows is part prison drama, part ecchi comedy, with a heavy dose of exaggerated expressions and over-the-top punishments.

Akira Hiramoto's art is a highlight—highly detailed and expressive, often adding to the humor with perfectly timed visual gags. The pacing keeps the story engaging, and the cast is already showing signs of strong chemistry and potential for deeper character development (beneath all the insanity).

That said, Prison School is definitely not for everyone. The fanservice is intense and frequent, and the humor leans heavily into crude territory. But if you're prepared for that and enjoy dark, exaggerated comedy, Volume 1 sets the stage for an addictive ride.

Not perfect, but highly entertaining—this volume earns its four stars for boldness, laughs, and style.

Well,
There was a recurring plot about watching each other piss which culminated in being pissed on.

I’m not gonna write a full review for this but rest assured I am literally never trusting my friends Meshach’s recommendations again as long as I live.

To its credit it a few of the panels were sort of nicely drawn??? I guess??? But then they’d be followed by a detail panel of a sweating vagina so like I don’t think I’m the demographic for this creepy ass voyeurism comic. Gross. Retrospectively should not have purchased a second hand copy. Only takes one hand to hold a comic open, if y’all know what I’m saying.

Whilst I wouldn't say this was best series ever written, there is something strangely addictive when reading it and no that's not because of the fan service, though I'm sure that's what's going to bring a lot of people.

This is about a bunch of peeping toms, who get imprisoned in school. I wouldn't say anyone was likeable in this but there are some interesting characters. One of them is the main guy, who's main goal seems to be to get with a girl, seems romance instead lustrous like the rest of the guys. Also Hana one of the shadow committee, she's a little nuts, you don't quite know what she's going to do next.

I'm interested to see where this goes, the goal at the moment seems to be escape.

Not my taste. I was expecting a story not dudes oogling girls and fantasizing.

• A bunch of girls beating up on boys like they are beneath them.
•Students running the school, no adult presence.
•The one adult you see has porn he can’t stop looking at, tries to bury it to stop himself. Digs it up, then buries them in cement to reallyyyy stop himself.
•I mean the artwork is nice but I didn’t want to read porn and see women’s breasts and vagina every other page.

The story dragged on wayyy longer than it needed to.

This is one I’m okay not reading any more of and would have been a DNF if I weren’t trying to add the pages to my count for 2021.

The beginning of this book is very cliché to the echii genre of storylines. Some how/way one/few boys get entered into an all girls academy and the boys happen to be perverts - go.

The book is stupid, its funny, its what you expect in this genre. Not much to stimulate the mind just a quick read and toss for a good laugh. I think it consists of too much fan service and lack of story but this genre is pretty much like that I think. I did have a few deep guttural guffaws that found their way out of my soul and for that I say its a funny way to pass up 30 minutes, 4 star.
