Ryan Carter has spent his entire life living in the shadows, partially by choice, but also by necessity. At least, that’s what he tells himself.
As a shadow manipulator who’s reluctant to use his powers too openly, Ryan is scraping by delivering pizzas in New Avalon’s industrial underbelly. He’s seen what happens to people with relatively minor powers like him who get noticed by the teams, corporations, or criminal factions. They end up owned, imprisoned, or dead.
But when a mysterious woman with her own abilities and seemingly unlimited resources makes him an offer he can’t refuse…
Nadia Cerná sees connections where others don’t, especially in transactions, profit margins, and potential hostile takeovers. She says she needs someone who can move unseen. Someone who can be her eyes and ears, and maybe even a little more. She says she needs Ryan, and she insists her activities and ambitions don’t stray too far into the gray for his comfort, but he’s not so sure.
The deeper and more involved Ryan gets, the less his concern is about doing something that might get him locked up though, and more about making sure he doesn’t fall for someone way out of his league. That is until he meets Amy, Nadia’s sharp-tongued business partner, who is immediately hostile, openly doubts his value to their organization, and threatens to derail everything.
From black-tie galas to underground punk shows, from penthouse seductions to street fights, Ryan must navigate a world where enemies wear capes, allies share beds, and the cost of justice might be way too high to pay.
For mature readers who like their heroes flawed, their action intense, and their relationships complicated. This novel contains graphic violence, explicit sexual content, and a polyamorous relationship.
I read a lot of books, like a lot. Over 300 last year and over 330 the year before. Many hundreds in years prior. This book from a J. Scott is in my top 25 of all time. This a simple story done so well and proves a point I make in many reviews that you don't need crazy convoluted stories or gimmicks to have a great book, just passion and words. The characters in this story are amazing they incredibly flushed out and have amazing synergy. Amy in particular is a home run of a character, her energy comes through so well and brings everything up a notch. The spice in this book is on another level. It works so perfectly with the story and the romance feels intimate and real. I certainly hope we get at least a few more books in this series.
Found a whole page repeated and Nadia called Amy in another place that needs an edit, but I really enjoyed the story. It does have explicit scenes which were well written but skippable if you don’t want to read that stuff. The storyline was interesting as were the characters, more complex than most put into their story so I enjoyed the emotional baggage the characters displayed.
3.5 close four. I liked large parts of this, but the way the mc is passive or just a little spineless or at times grating. He has a ton of plot armor, and it's hard to ignore at times. The poly was decent, existing f/f relationship the mc joins trope. The MC is dense af about people around him, kinda autistic. I'd read the next one at least and go from there.
Really enjoyed this one. The character writing was especially good, but the prose and the plot were extremely competent as well. Took a star off because far too many pages were spent on sex scenes I just skipped over.
Note: - 1 star = I disliked it - 2 star = It was okay - 3 star = I liked it - 4 star = I really liked it - 5 star = It was a favorite
I wasn’t sure about this read when I saw it, but decided to try. I could not have been more surprised and pleased. The writing is very good, and the plot was not to be figured out quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and am looking forward to the follow-up(s).
The characters had little to no depth. In the first 2 sentences of a character description you got most of the depth of their back story and personality. The plot was obvious with little nuance.
