His Secret Child

Rate this book
She walked away with my child inside her, something I didn't know. And now she's back asking for my help. I wanted to hate her, keep her at arm's length, but there's just one problem. In order to save my little girl's life, we need a child with my DNA, and there's no time for in vitro. Though I tried to keep our time together impersonal it wasn't long before the old feelings that I'd thought long dead came roaring back and I found myself in the unenviable position of losing my heart to her once again.

I' m not fond of Silver's writing skills but her storylines always intrigue me, they are indeed my guilty pleasure. It's an experience where you know from the first moment, that the book you reading is trashy and filled with plot holes and errors and in spite of all that you can't stop yourself.

I' ve read worse, really, really worse, than that. Yes i hate the abusive hero and the TSTL heroine, but still for me, this one was much better than her previous works. The editing issues were far less than usually and the plot had some very good points, mostly the sex.

Cord Helmsworth was an asshole, plain and simple. But at least he loved his daughter with his whole heart and was quite straightforward when his mother strarted her little tricks. Otherwise, i couldn't stand the uncontrollable usage on the word "Fuck" and all its variations, the juvenile idiosyncrasies and of course the justification of his actions.

I don't have much to say about Zania, she was almost absent from the book, absolutely blant and tedious. I didn't really care for her, but i liked little Mia, she is a real princess..

So the story is about a couple that get's seperated by some malevolent forces -aka the hero's mother- and after six years they meet again. Zania has a terrible secret that Cord will soon find out. He is still in love with her but can't forgive the way she treated him and his heart in the past. But not everything is as it seems to be..

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK

- I liked his father.
- Too many editing issues.
- The sex in some parts is very hot.
- I can't stress enough how awful Cord is mostly at the beginning.

Man, I hate it when this happens. I don't know if it's because my tastes have changed over the years or maybe it's my age, but this wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it being. I still enjoyed the story part of this. The story was great. The sex though, ugh. Don't get me wrong. I like sex scenes in stories when they are done right and when they aren't more of the story than the actual story. This story would have been at least 50% shorter without ALL the sex scenes. And the majority of them were not hot, they were pretty much straight up porn and a turn off. Jordan's sex scenes feel like they were written by a horny frat boy, all rutting with no feeling, and I ended up skimming through them. It got very annoying because there were so many that I had to skim every few pages. I'm really sad. This story would have been so good without the massive overdose of tasteless sex scenes.

***FOUR STARS***
Whew, what a story! Cord was an OTT scathingly hateful asshole, and Zania was an absolute doormat, who never once fought Cord back. And in reality, this story was totally unbelievable as well. I'm not sure exactly why I enjoyed it as much as I did.

THAT being said though, I savored every page of this story. Cord was insanely mean and hurtful, but I enjoyed this story being told from his POV. Most of these types of stories are told through the eyes of the heroine, and while Cord was a total dick through 90% of this story, I also felt his pain from a betrayal he perceived done to him in the past. It was fun experiencing him finally thawing out and warming up to Zania after hating her for so long. Not sure what my sickness is, but I LOVE these kinds of stories. I was happy to finally find another one of these asshole hero stories that sucked me in from the very first page and kept me glued through the entire story, to the HEA ending. Definitely going to check out more by this author.

Heads up though, this one is definitely not for the easily triggered. They should avoid at all cost.

DNF 82% Spoilers!

What did I like about this book? Well, it had marginally less mistakes in spelling and grammar. Oh, and the editing was considerably less horrible than it usually is with a Jordan Silver book (and by considerably I mean it's still there, just less god-awful than usual).

What didn't I like? The plot or the characters.

The male MC, Cord, is an abusive rapist asshole, basically. Though it's explained away in "he was so hurt at her leaving him five years ago and it destroyed the happy, loving man he'd been!" bullshit.

The female MC, Zania, is just too stupid to live. She ran from their "loving" relationship 5 years ago when pregnant - and though I DNFed, I would bet money it was because Cord's mother threatened her - because that's the kind of shitty plot this book has - and has only returned because their daughter is sick.

When Cord doesn't prove to be a donor match, the doctor tells him their best bet is to get pregnant and have another child to pull marrow, etc. from. So Cord goes home and forces Zania to fuck him again, and again, and again until she's pregnant. But we're supposed to be okay with it because he gives her a little clit action. So, she's enjoying it, right? It's not rape that way!

Here's a little lesson for you:

To be an "Alpha male" in the traditional sense simply meant the most dominant, strongest, or the most confident in a group.

I have absolutely no idea how or when "Alpha Male" became synonymous with abusive, vain, arrogant, conceited, harmful, stalking sociopaths.

But it needs to stop!

For God's sake, people - it's NOT romantic, or sweet, or special to be abused. It's just not.

This was like a soap opera, because it was full of angst, evil OW, evil mother in law, plots, plans and all sorts of nasty shit that got in between the hero and heroine. It was a hard story to read because the hero really made the heroine suffer for leaving him but his vengeance against those that had wronged them, made up for the suffering. I love how Jordan Silver's heroes always make sure that the evil doers suffer a lot ! Justice is served at the end and it was well served too.

I've read this author's books before and have enjoyed them. I was looking forward to the story, unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. The male lead Cord suddenly discovers he has a child, when Zania his ex who just disappeared years before, returns asking for his help as the little girl is very ill.
It's difficult to write this review without giving spoilers. But I found it distasteful that he strikes Zania, and on another occasion he tries to choke her. The story is written from his POV which grated on my nerves. As he was consumed with anger and wanted revenge on Zania. This was supposed to be a romance, but it certainly didn't feel like one. As for Zania she had far too many TSTL moments for me. Why she didn't tell him why she packed up and left was beyond me. There were other elements of the plot that didn't sit well with me either. All in all this tale was too depressing in the way it was written.

I’m not going to rate this because I skimmed and wasn’t really committed to the journey. 😊 I knew going in it wasn’t great, and that the H was horrible, but was curious. So, I went into this disconnected, and never really engaged. This is going to be a bare bones review.

Your enjoyment will probably depend on your mood, and what you’re looking for. If you’re hankering for an overbearing bossy alphahole, buckets of drama & misery, evil family/OW meddling that receive comeuppance…then you might like it. If you have zero tolerance for abuse, (mental, physical, emotional) including all mentioned above...then I'd skip.

Bottom Line- This isn’t serious…like at all. The plot/actions/reactions are VERY OTT , VERY dramatic, and VERY unrealistic. (soap opera on steroids) It’s a fairly quick easy read free on KU.

*OTT- over the top. BBS-betraying body syndrome

I think I could have liked this one. It had elements I liked. I admit to liking the overdone plot of: alpha hero taking revenge on the misunderstood mother of his secret baby.

But the writing just wasn't strong enough for me even if the sex was kinda hot at times (if you like it rough and dirty). I'm also not a huge fan of the first person POV.

I never got why the heroine didn't just tell the H why she left him. What was preventing her from doing that once she came back? Maybe he wouldn't have believed her, but she could have tried.

Also, there was NO apology from the H for the way he acted toward her before learning the truth. Of course, she was tstl for keeping it from him, but he turned around and blamed her with everything once it all came to light. No matter how stupid her actions were, it doesn't excuse abusive behavior. He slapped her and treated her horribly. He could have at least apologized. The whole secret was a very artificial and poorly explained way of keeping tensions high on the author's part.

Also, I'm not a prude. I don't care if the word 'fuck' is used, sometimes I use it if my level of frustration is at an extreme high. But, it loses it's impact and makes you sound like a moron if you use it 5 times per sentence - even in your own head (shit was used almost as much). It was very distracting. According to my word search it was used 434 times. Fucking seriously, 434 fucking times. Fuck.

2.5 ABUSIVE STARS

I started reading this book expecting nothing!
So when I got the hero hitting the heroine...I thought to myself, "what the hell did I miss?"
Well this is one story I would have liked to have more back story before he hits her because I was ready to say "that is too f*cked up for me".
But like any curious human being, I had to know.
I was eventually glad I did.
The hero was an asshole but shit was the heroine was STUPID! I mean come on. That was such a weak ass reason to leave the love of your life!!! I was all really!?????
That's just DUMB.

It's not an easy read with him almost raping her every night for a baby (to save his kid). I was very very uncomfortable with that!
She was just such a doormat.
I could not really feel sorry for her after I found out why she left him. I was thinking it was because she caught him in bed with another woman but nope it was so lame I will not spoil it for you.
Read this one the WTFness.
It is worth the read but not a reread unless I feel like this kind HOT mess.

This book reminds me of Telenovelas I used to watch with my sisters growing up! It's also a valid reason as to way drugs should be illegal! The Hero is definitely on Cocaine, there is no other explanation for his behavior! But me liking this book would testify to my cavewoman tendencies anyway.

Of course, checking the square of "Secret baby" in my Bingo Challenge of 2025.

3.5 stars - Friends, I don’t know why it took a ridiculous Jordan Silver book (in all it’s Jordan Silver-y glory 🤡) to break my 3-week, 10-book DNF streak, but these are the facts, fam. 🤷🏼‍♀️

JS writes in about 3 modes - this one fell under the raging fugue state hero and the mute bobble-headed downtrodden and wronged heroine category. I feel like a terrible excuse for a woman that this is probably my favorite JS mode. 😬😅🤣 🫣

Yes it was OTT in all the ways JS is OTT and yes it had all the same editing errors, but for some reason it hit the spot. Your guess is as good as mine. 👀🤣

This plot intrigued me but unfortunately, it had holes and problems. We have a weak h in love with the H but she decided to disappear from H's life because his mother threatened her. After 6 years, she comes back because she had a child with the H and the child's life is in danger, needing a bone marrow transplant. The H behaves as an as#$%le but the h takes it all without saying a word, knowing that her child custody is in danger and she could lose her baby.
Also, I had a problem with the idea of making a new baby for saving the life of the one that you already have.

In reality, this was a 2.5 read for me. I kept changing the rating back and forth many times as I was just not sure what rating I wanted to give this book. But after seeing the relatively low ratings this book has generated from my goodread pals, i decided to be abit generous.

The story follows as Zania, after disappearing on him 5/6 years ago without any note as to why, comes to Cord for help as their child (who he did not know exsisted **eyeroll**) is sick and needs his help medically. The plot in itself was not bad but was not original. There was too much of his internal monologue and for some reason, authors tend to color Male POV's with profanity and macho-istic internal chatter. I was almost getting tired of the number of times *FUCK* was used that I was almost close to hitting my head on the wall.

I thought the Hero went way overboard with his anger at the Heroine. There was very less communication or dialogues of Zania therefore didn't feel the angst it required and I felt that Cord could have done abit more groveling considering that he was a mean sonofabitch to her.

However, having said that, i would not mind exploring other books of this author.

Well, another hot, twisted, Jordan Silver story... this one is like an upgraded edition on Deception. It is not the best quality and you and me both know this is a smutfest, so no one is being kidded here -- haha.
Still, this one had actually well written, very disturbing, dark and complex intimate scenes of hate/lies/sex/punishment mixtures that just added an extra star. The plot was formulaic, hero and heroine very predictable, side characters cartoonish and villanous as expected... and still, in my opinion, this one had a little something interesting thrown in there...!
If you've never read this author maybe pick a different one as an introduction, but if you are a Jordan Silver fan, please, pick it up and let me know what you think 👍🏼

I haven't even got a third into the novel when I needed to stop and say the way this male character is acting, is utter bullshit. It'd be a cold day in hell before I let a man treat me like he is. Why would any woman take that shit?

Okay, all done reading. Cord was a fucking asshole. I disliked the novel and found it absolutely pointless. Normally I love Jordan Silver books but this one was nothing but a huge disappointment for me.

Wasn't a bad story however I hate a female that is complacent. When he slapped her I sat up in my chair expecting her to go Xena Warrior Princess on his ass instead her bottom lip quivered and tears filled her eyes. He basically forces himself on her which I understand they needed to make a baby, but damn if a man treated me that way no matter the circumstances I can guarantee the book would have ended a lot differently. I didn't understand the point of not telling Cord the truth about his mother and Camille after he learned about Mia. It was very obvious that he doted on her. I'm all for curse words (mf) is my favorite go to, yet he said fuck so many times, I thought that was the only word he knew.

The story line was good, but the excessive use of the word "Fuck" and all of its form is annoying and does take away from the actual story. The parental & ex revenge part of the book felt over rushed to me, lacking some depth to it and maybe also to the overall of the story. I maybe shouldn't be saying this but, I caught myself on more then one occasion questioning the actual age of writer, to which honestly is really none of my business, but I felt I was reading something from someone that's quite young.

This is my first book by this author. This is not an interracial story.

I almost want to say that this is a dark romance story because Cord the male lead is so angry and negative regarding his girlfriend who left him and he did not now why and then she turns up again in his life. This story is told from Cord's POV. He uses lots of colourful language too!!

A good read but this book will not be everyone's cup of tea!

Second chance 💗 love

This is a second chance love with a sweet twist. Zaina was strong and determined, which I loved. Cord was the typical jerk alpha to the female who continues to be a jerk face. Which I begin to like.

I'll start with the problematic parts of the book:

⨷ Writing gets confusing at times because of long sentences and no punctuation. I had to read a few sentences several times to understand what's being said.
⨷ ML uses too many f***s and a** in his conversations and inner monologues.
⨷ Either it should've been a dual POV or ML POV only. The 2-page FL POV was not necessary. It somewhat alienated me from her character to be suddenly exposed to her thought process like that.

Despite all the issues I mentioned, I still rated this book 5 stars because it has a different vibe to the usual rich/alpha ML and poor/naïve FL stories. What I found unique in this story are:

🌹 The story relies heavily on a misunderstanding but this one did not annoy me. They both could've sorted their situation in the first chapter itself but where's the fun in that. We wouldn't have this book if that happened.😁

🌹 This book may seem toxic & abusive, but I found MCs actions/reactions quite realistic. I don't support slapping, choking or verbally abusing anyone, but I've seen people do it irl, so I'm judging the characters likewise. Their actions/reactions were a consequence of the situation they were dealing with and were pushed into by others in the first place.😠

🌹 ML is a good guy, a mama's boy and not a man-ho. He falls head over heels in love with FL and treats her with respect right from the beginning. He waits 3 months before they start having sex. Their relationship lasts for about 4 months before FL abruptly leaves him without any explanation. I found ML's character unique because he was not afraid to fall in love or make a commitment.🥰

🌹 ML becomes bitter and hateful after FL leaves him 6 years ago. He is what I call a 'situational a-hole'. He does not indulge in self-destructive behaviors to deal with his broken heart.👍

🌹 Smut was good, but I did not feel like enjoying it because they were having sex to conceive a baby that can save their oldest child. ML's dirty talk or FL's BBS came out of lust for sure but mostly out of desperation.😢 They do start enjoying it eventually.

🌹 Some reviews called FL a doormat. I did not find her as one though. In my view, a doormat is someone who has the resources like money & people to help them but still choose to be a victim. I can understand if one's base personality is docile or non-confrontational, but I still prefer they take the time to build courage and stand up for themselves.💪
However, I don't expect a character that is at a disadvantage/has no one to suddenly become feisty and take on fights that will result in a loss & invite more problems. I would rather they put up with the situation and make a safe escape. So I understood why FL fled when she was blackmailed. I also understood her reasons for not contacting ML - they were newly dating and she did not want to risk losing her child if ML or the blackmailers knew about it. She was young (around 18/19 years old then) to understand the severity of her decisions.

***I'm open to discuss, learn and educate myself if my understanding of 'what a doormat is' is incorrect. Please feel free to leave your comments😀***

🌹 Even the villains in this book can be empathized with. They thought their actions served everyones' best interests and did not know about the secret child either. I did feel bad for OW. She was not involved when FL was around and neither FL when OW was around. There was no overlapping as such but ideally ML should've broken up with her upfront. He realizes it and takes the blame. I'll give him a pass because of the dire situation he was in.

🌹 ML & FL discuss about their past, their disappointments/insecurities/feelings and put a closure to all the bad events that took place between them. They cut ties with toxic people in their life. This made me believe in their HEA.

Overall this was a fulfilling read for me. My first book from Jordan Silver and I'll check out her other books for sure.

I only picked this up because my friends were saying how awful it was. Of course, I had to check it out for myself. I've read better fan fiction. The dialogue and internal monologues were so juvenile and so over the top, it was laughable. The author turned her characters into caricatures of people.

I get that she had to stay so they could make a child to save Mia, but when he slapped her, he wouldn't have gotten up off the floor again cause that's where I'd have laid him out. Completely unforgivable. The Zero was so butthurt because she left him that he slaps her across the face and rapes her over and over. The author must have been smoking some good stuff when she came up with this story.
