Bolivar Solution
Someone at the White House agrees in principle to devastate the lives of a couple and their son. The purpose is to keep a horrible secret for the man nominated to head the National Security Agency. He murdered an American journalist 34 years ago. Now, assassins are dispatched to kill an entire family.
Nathan Arthur, a good natured 52-year old Latin America expert and government consultant, works hard with his wife, Ana, supporting 19-year old Thomas, who dreams of going to law school and entering politics, an ordinary family struggling to live the American dream.
In the middle of the night, assassins kill the young man Chicago Police confirmed as Thomas Arthur on his way back to his university dorm. Within one hour, Nathan Arthur is attacked, his wife kidnapped. Her ransom is an encrypted package Nathan’s father sent to him. Nathan is unaware of its whereabouts. His father is a US. Naval Commander that the government claims was killed by Hezbollah in Iran. Nathan is warned he has only 48 hours to save Ana.
Before leaving Boston for Caracas, Nathan learns that the strange microorganisms he’d helped Argonne Laboratory discover were also found on a NASA satellite buried deep in a gorge not far from the village. The race is on to save his wife and son, and the village targeted for internationally sanctioned firebombing to contain the deadly outbreak, a so-called Bolivar Solution.
Steeped in intrigue, unexplained phenomena, and assassins determined to wipe out his family, Nathan is in a desperate race to untangle the web of intrigue, which goes all the way up to the White House, before time runs out.

An excellent read with plenty of turns and twists. Nathan Arthur has to think and act quickly to save the life of his kidnapped wife. His father sent something to him. His enemies want it. He can't figure out why. It turns out a clueless president appointed a murderer to National Security Advisor. The bad guys want to kill Nathan and wipe out his family before the federal investigators working on the background check reach him.
