She lives in my den. Drinks my tea. Moans when I feed from her. Elira says she’s human—but she smells like something I’d burn kingdoms to keep.
I warned her to stay inside. Told her not to speak to the others. She went anyway.
And now I taste the the enemy’s close. Watching. Hunting bonded pairs like us and carving out their hearts.
Let them come.
I don’t run. I don’t beg. I kill. And I’ll gut every Waira that calls my love a weakness before I let her go cold in the snow.
But she’s changing, too.
The girl who once cried under furs just used herself as bait to lure me prey.
She doesn’t flinch anymore. She whispers “harder” when I pound her, and “again” when I mark her spine in blood.
She let the monster in… And now she’s becoming one.
Read on for obsessive monster possessiveness, survival sisterhoods, mating-bond corruption, and a skeletal war daddy who doesn’t beg—he hunts. HEA Guaranteed!
This started off fine. Just as well as any other monster romance. The waira give a kind of duskwalker vibe. Everything was progressing well until about half way through. Some sentences repeated themselves in the same chapter. And I do mean this literally. Back to back almost verbatim. One sentence was doubled accidentally. Like something went wrong in an editing program.
It gets so repetitive that I was jumping entire paragraphs and sometimes half a page at a time. I just wanted it to be over quicker.
Then after all this building to a climax, it sputters out like the final season of GOT. Just giving nothing. Not even bare minimum. No explanation. No tidy ending. Nothing. Just done. Writers ran out of steam and said "Screw it. Good enough" and then quit.
I honestly don't know who is rating this 5 stars because that's crazy work.
4 1/2 stars - This joint dark Protheka story is about Elira our human and Kaerith our Waira who are a mated pair. Kaerith goes on patrol on his property and sees another waira hunting close by. He senses that he is also mated. He doesn't tell Elira what he discovered. Elira knows she well protected and safe but is lonely for human contact. She goes foraging for herbs she needs and meets another woman, Vicky, across the stream. They start talking and make plans to meet there again. She keeps this hidden from Kaerith, but he smells the other woman on her. What occurs afterwards was an engaging story that kept me entertained. I'd volunteer to read and review this copy I'd received.
There was a lot and then not a lot happening in this book. I could see different ways the story could have gone but did not expect how it ended. I'm not entirely sure what the book was about? There wasn't much world building, there was a little bit of a build up towards the end and then it falls flat. No resolution, no HEA. It just stops and it felt unfinished.
This story was entertaining, exciting and interesting!!. I still am not sure what these beings were??. But they loved their humans and took care of them to keep them safe. What more could you ask for!!.
