The Games You Play

Rate this book
They say when one door closes, another opens.

So make sure you end things with a bang.

My last night in LA before moving across the country, I met a tall, blond god of a man. I wanted one evening of no-strings-attached fun, and he was happy to play along.

All we shared were first names and a few hours of scorching pleasure.

So when I show up at my new job and come face to face with my one-night stand? I’m so shocked, I pretend I don’t remember him.

It feels like the worst kind of cosmic joke. But Logan?

Logan doesn’t think it’s funny at all.

He’s convinced I planned the whole thing. That I’m some scheming puck bunny trying to manipulate my way into his life.

But I have custody of my thirteen-year-old brother, and Reed depends on me. So it doesn’t matter how hot my night with Logan was, how our arguments turn into flirting, or how thick the tension grows between us. I can’t risk this job for anyone or anything.

I have serious responsibilities, and Logan is a typical playboy.

Love may be a game to him, but it’s one I can’t afford to play.

Piper Hale is a Midwestern girl who loves golden-retriever heroes, imperfect heroines, and some coffee with her sugar. She lives with her two crazy (but amazing) kids in the middle-of-the-map USA.

Piper grew up listening to her dad’s silly stories at bedtime, became a voracious reader as a child, and never forgot her high school creative writing teacher, who told her she had what it took to write romance. Even if she didn’t give it a go until the pandemic.

These days, you’ll find Piper writing contemporary romance that’s sassy, sexy, and chock-full of cinnamon rolls.

The Games You Play absolutely stole my heart.

The Rogues’ perpetual playboy, Logan, has finally met his match and she is nothing like he expected.

Blair is fiercely independent, resilient, and wholly devoted to her younger brother, Reed. After a tragic accident takes their parents, Blair puts her own dreams on hold to build a stable life for the two of them. She doesn’t rely on anyone. She doesn’t need anyone. And she definitely doesn’t need a broody, infuriatingly hot hockey player accusing her of following him across the country.

What starts as a one night stand turns into a deliciously awkward, coincidental re-introduction when Blair relocates for a new job only to discover Logan is very much part of her new world. Watching these two collide again was quirky, authentic, and completely addictive.

Logan may have the reputation of a confident playboy, but beneath the surface he’s layered with self-doubt and shaped by a lifetime of letdowns. His vulnerability made him so much more than the typical hockey heartthrob. Seeing him slowly unravel, question his beliefs, and fall hard for Blair was everything. His character growth? Absolutely chef’s kiss.

The chemistry between Blair and Logan is electric. Their banter sparkles, their tension simmers, and every interaction feels charged with emotion. But what truly makes this story shine are the quieter, poignant moments the exploration of grief, healing, and learning to let others in.

I adored the sibling bond between Blair and Reed. Their relationship felt raw and real, grounding the romance in something deeply meaningful. The wider friendship group adds warmth and humor, and watching Blair slowly find her place among Logan’s world forming connections with his friends and their wives was beautiful.

And just when you think you’re settled into a swoony romance? Enter a real stalker and the perfect dose of drama. The balance of emotional depth, tension, and steam kept me completely hooked.

At its core, this story is about redefining family. Logan and Blair both learn that family isn’t about blood it’s about love, loyalty, and choosing each other.

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. I am beyond ready for Sebastian’s story next!

Blair is about to move across the country to Minnesota and start life over with her little brother, Reed. On her last night in California, the place she grew up, she finds herself alone and not wanting to be. So for her last hurrah, she decides to go out to this much talked about club, see what the fuss is about, and let loose for once.

While out and nearly regretting it, she runs into a rude bartender and someone possibly worth spending a frivolous, no strings night with, Mr. Hotty McHot Viking. After a hot night, Blair sneaks out while her nameless Viking sleeps and gets home so she can grab a little rest before the drive to her and Reed’s new home, where a crazy coincidence awaits.

I really enjoy how Piper Hale writes her characters. They are flawed and products of their lives, but contemplative about their situations when it matters. They try to do better, to understand their traumas and how to navigate them. It feels refreshing when you meet so many characters who are so wishy washy and unable to see past their noses. It makes me crazy being in their heads. I have enough of my own crazy for a few lifetimes.

As someone not really into contemporary settings, I found myself enjoying this as much as the previous book in the series. It was not so much the setting, but seeing these characters bond and grow together.

I absolutely loved this story about a strong, loving and independent woman named Blair who's had to deal with so mush since her and her brother lost there parents in a fire and desided to move for a fresh start to Minneapolis with a new job working for the Rogues. When she comes face to face with her one night stand Logan. He's a hockey player and one of the Rogues. So when Logan who's been a no strings attached kind of guy see's Blair again there's definitely going to be peanly of heat, drama and Logan will learn there's more to Blair than just a one night stand. It's heart warming and has Lovable characters from the Rogues who are there for them every step of the way. With new and guest appearance from the series that made me smile. And Reed bless him was such a sweet kid who I thought did amazingly well with the thanks to his sister and the love she had for him with the little nick names of Blair-Bear." and Reedy." which was so lovely. And I loved how Logan showed a new side of him which I'm so glad about. I'd definitely love to have a Viking like Logan to keep me safe. Especially since there's a stalker on the loss which kept me on my toes. Which made me wonder if they'd get to have there happily ever after which I'm so glad they did. And I cant wait to read the next book in the series and meet the characters all over again.

Another winner!

Another great addition to this m/f hockey romance series. The Games You Play is the fourth book and it's Logan's turn.

Blair is using her last night in L.A. to let loose. A handsome stranger, a mind-blowing night, and no-strings is not her style, but she's moving across the country in a few hours so she goes for it. Not realizing who he is.

Logan was planning on sneaking out but she beats him to it. And he doesn't know why it bothers him so much. He puts it aside until he gets back home and back on the ice, but then he runs into Blair.

What game is she playing?

I was hooked. I already loved this series but when I read just the first few chapters I knew I was going to really loved Blair. She put her life on hold to raise her younger brother. She is great at riding the line between sister and guardian. Reed being such an important part of this story added in so many ways. Not just with Blair but with Logan.

And watching Logan come to terms that Blair's not a puck bunny was so good. And realizing that he needs to deal with his father and his past was another great moment.

Having a stalker just made things scary for all of them. Blair fears, not only for herself, but for Reed, and she's scared she could lose her job. It's a lot!

I look forward to the next book and seeing what the author does next.

His Angel…

After losing her parents in a fire Blair became the guardian of her little brother. Five years later and Blair wants a one last hurrah before she and her brother move to Minnesota from California for a better job opportunity and fresh start for them.

Blair meets Logan in California and has a one night stand with him, just first names and no other information. She sneaks out in the middle of the night and Logan is butthurt because usually he’s the one sneaking out.

Blair shows up for her new job at the Rogues arena and gets introduced to the team and shockingly her one night stand.

Logan was in California for only a game but his home is in Minnesota. He thinks she’s got nefarious motives and is a jerk towards at first. He learns more about Blair and her brother and eases up on his attitude.

They start to get closer and Logan soon realizes that he actually would like to date Blair. He never wanted that before but Blair and her brother make him want to be a family.

There was an issue with a stalker that made you keep turning the pages to find out what was going to happen.

I really got into this book and I really love this series. I hope Sebastian gets a book next!

I really enjoyed this next instalment of this series, I've loved them all so far. It was such an emotional ride, and I found myself rooting for Blair right from the start. She is incredibly strong and independent, she's had to be after losing her parents and taking on being a parent to her brother, Reed She moves across the country to start a fresh job.

The story gets complicated when Blair realises her "no-strings" one-night stand is actually Logan, a star hockey player for the very team she just started working for. Logan is convinced Blair is a "puck bunny" who planned their encounter just to get close to his fame. He’s definitely a typical playboy, but as the story goes on, you see he’s actually hiding a lot of self-doubt and past hurt. Watching him realise he was wrong and seeing him finally grow up was really heartwarming.

There was so much to like, especially the electric chemistry and the fun banter between them. I also loved the "found family" feel between all the guys, I love their conversations.

It's a great mix of sweet and spicy that handles themes of grief in a really touching way.

The Games You Play is book four in the Going Rogue series. The stories are standalones but have crossover characters. I recommend reading them in order for maximum enjoyment.

Blair is an overwhelmed 25 year old. She’s guardian of her little brother after her parents’ unexpected demise. She decides to have one last hurrah after starting a new job across the country. Of course, as fate would have it, her one night stand is a hockey player with the Minnesota Rogues’ organization, she now works for.

Logan doesn’t do over nights. He doesn’t do romance. He doesn’t do relationships. Period.
Then he spends the night with Blair, runs into her again at work, and his world (and views) are turned upside down. Will a relationship succeed or will he get in his own way?

This was an epically cute romance with a great grovel and redemption arc. The characters are real and extremely relatable and have great witty banter. A wonderful hockey romance with a well deserved HEA.

Okay, this has to be my favourite book of the year so far!
Both the storyline and the characters were fantastic.
The story follows Blair and Logan. Blair is the legal guardian of her brother Reed after their parents passed away. Reed stops at his friends the night so Blair decides to go to a club and have a one night stand with someone she’s never going to see again as they are leaving LA!
She takes a new job for the Rogues hockey team not knowing that the one night stand just happens to be one of the players, in shock she pretends she doesn’t know Logan. Logan to start with doesn’t treat her the best as he thinks she knew who he was and is tricking him!
Logan doesn’t do relationships but something about Blair changes him, so when he finds out she’s the guardian to Reed he falls for her abit more! Blair is also trying to hide her feelings as she doesn’t want to loose her job or do anything that could affect Reed.
They eventually give in to one another! And it’s the cutest hottest thing!
There is obviously some drama along the way but they get there HEA eventually and it’s such a good one!

Well, this story is an incredible, from a chance encounter with a handsome man on her last night in town before Blair leaves with her brother to a new job across country. Laughing out loud what is the chance at her new job she runs into him and he is a famous hockey player. Logan is just positive she was trying to get to him and his money like so many women have in the past. Blair is welcomed into the hockey team family along with her brother. Amazedly she and Logan start dating and it looks like it might work into something long term with the commitment phobia Logan. The one night an older man tries to pick her up and it turns out to be Logan’s father, things are said that makes Blair think that maybe Logan is not all in like she thought. Then want of the messages Logan is receiving, really strange ones. The comradery among the hockey team and their wives, the jokes, and how they do things like one big family really makes this a grab your fluffy blanket, a good drink snuggle down and you will be lost in no time to the complex relationships but how it all still works.

Two people that hook up, expecting never to see each other again, find themselves working closely together - I love this trope. How do they navigate what happened, when they went into things expecting one and done, but now find themselves catching - gasp - feelings!

The guys from the Rogues team are wonderful, and this is Logan's time to shine. He has baggage that means he never wants to settle down. Blair, on the other hand, had too much responsibility thrust on her at an early age.

Watching them go from hook up, to avoidance to falling in love was a rollercoaster, and I loved it. I'm not usually a fan of kids in these stories, but Blair's teenage brother, Reed, is awesome, and the perfect foil to his sister, and to Logan.

As always, the course of true love isn't allowed to run smoothly, but I love how they navigated the bumps in the road.

There's still one book planned in this series, Bash's story, and I can't wait to see what he's hiding! I love this series and will be sad to see it end.

"The Games You Play" by Piper Hale is an absolute triumph! As my first foray into Hale's work, and as a standalone read within a series, it completely captivated me. The author's writing is superb, crafting a narrative that's both engaging and rich in detail.

What truly sets this book apart are the characters and their intricately woven backgrounds. Each character feels real, with their own unique struggles and triumphs, making it easy to become invested in their journeys. The moments of levity sprinkled throughout the story were a delightful bonus, providing much-needed laughter amidst the drama.

From start to finish, I was hooked, eagerly turning pages to uncover the next twist and turn. Piper Hale has gained a new fan, and I'm already planning my next dive into her collection. If you're looking for a book that will leave you feeling satisfied and eager for more, look no further than "The Games You Play.”

When your ONS doesn't stay in the city you found them in....

Oh we go from lovers to enemies to lovers in this one. Okay enemies is probably a bit strong, but after Blair and Logan had a ONS in LA - and then she shows up at his work in Minnesota, what's he supposed to think? I loved Blair's sassiness showing through her character and the little jibes she made throughout the dialoge. And her little brother Reed, once he settles into their new home, is pretty hilarious too. Logan's got some work today because after the rage he feels toward Blair, and the comments he makes, finalliy realizing that maybe she didn't plan it all - he's got to figure out what he's going to do with that information. Loved how his buddies dragged him the whole time about being head over heels for a girl before he even admitted it himself. And the locker room where Blair meets the players for the first time and they hear her name - GOLD!

I adored this latest installment of the Going Rogue series! Blair is an amazingly strong and independent woman who is used to relying on only herself, and puts her younger brother first, and her life on good after a tragic accident with their parents.

This story of a one night stand turned coincidental re-introduction was quirky and authentic! Logan never is an outwardly confident hockey player but he’s still riddled with self doubt from a lifetime of letdowns.

There was everything you want in a contemporary sports romance: action packed game play, real world problems, mild drama and peril, and lots of sweet and spicy moments!

Check this one out if you enjoy:

🏒 one night stands and coincidental reintroductions

I loved this book. Brilliant combination of comedy, romance, spice, storyline, characters, it all just came together perfectly for me. Love the hockey team characters in this series and it’s nice to see more of them develop as the series goes on while the books still maintaining the ability to be read as a standalone too.
The FMC in this book Blair is great, independent because she’s had to be, let down by the world and wants nothing more than that one person she can count on. Pair that with our MMC Logan who never sees a woman more than once, sets an alarm so can sneak out before morning and you’d think it could never work but sometimes we never realise fate puts what we need right in our path.
Highly recommend even if you’re not usually a sports romance reader as I rarely do but I make exception for this series as they are so good and not too sports heavy.

Oh I absolutely love Logan and Blair! Leave it to the commitment phobic Logan to be the absolute biggest cinnamon roll in the series! He’s just such an incredible guy, and I love the way he cares for Blair long before he realizes how much he loves her as well!
The found family dynamics are what make this series so special, getting to see the other happy couples from previous books, and getting to see how those dynamics play out as each person finds their happily after. This whole series is like a warm hug!
This book has been my favorite one so far, with just the right balance of heat and emotion, plot and action. I absolutely loved every minute!
I would absolutely recommend this one, even if you don’t want to read the rest of the series. It would work just fine as a stand alone, but you definitely get to enjoy the story more if you’ve read the series!

I am absolutely loving this hockey romance series and this story might be the best one yet. Logan, is the team play boy who is so used to being seen for his fame and fortune that he doesn't think anyone would want him just because. He is determined to never wake up to with a woman or to settle down ever, that is until he meets Blair who supposedly doesn't know who he is and leaves before he has a chance to do so...something which has him baffled. Surprise, turns out she's the new employee for the teams non profit PR and things go crazy from there. The push and pull between these two along with the real heart breaking emotional back story makes for such a wonderful read. I could not put it down.

Let’s head back to Minnesota and the Rogues! But first, leaving Los Angeles. Blair was looking for a blast of a last night in town before leaving all she knew for a new job. In tow she’s got her 13-year old brother.

Logan was doing what he always did with the guys. And it paid off in spades. Until he woke up and she was gone.

In a hilarious tale of mixed signals, fierce independence, getting molly-whopped by Cupid, and some intense creepiness, come a sweet story of how fierce love is and how it can up end and complete a life all in one shot. I’ve enjoyed this series, and this book is no different. Give me more of Griffin’s ridiculousness, Maddox’s intensity, Ryder’s insecure sincerity, and please, please, please let Bash find his HEA too!

my fave so far

This book brought so much emotion out of me. As a single mom, I know how hard it is to hold someone else’s entire universe together.

I’m so thankful you didn’t make me hate Logan for long. But jeeze, I HATED him for a small chunk of that. Idc what you SUSPECT. I would be MORTIFIED if I started a new job, and realized I’d had a one-nighter with a new coworker and that guy was treating me like crap. On top of that, he told all his friends. And I cried for Blair in those early chapters, and it’s a supremely and objectively awful thing to make someone feel unwelcome in a new job.

Thanks for waking him up early so I didn’t hold a grudge. Also thanks for making that 3rd act breakup only about thirty seconds long. I appreciated that.

Once I began reading Blair and Logan's story, I became committed!
A one night stand, turns into a second chance meeting, and something more and unexpected.
It was filled with some drama, humor, lots of emotions, tension, spicy goodness, and healing.

I loved Blair. She was smart, hardworking, independent, and so protective of her brother.
It might have taken me just a bit longer to love Logan, but I definitely did. The more I learned about him and seeing his character growth made me happy.
The tension, banter, and back & forth between Blair and Logan was done perfectly. Seeing their relationship evolve was the best.

Once I started this book I struggled to put it down. This is book 4 in the series but a complete standalone, I have only read one other in the series so far but Piper writes amazing characters that really get you invested in how the story plays out. The growth with both the main characters in this book was brilliant and really had me rooting for it to all work out as they both deserve a happy ending with everything in their past, they have to go o a journey to get there though. Looking forward to the next book to read Bash's story, as the little bots you see of the other characters in the books makes you want to know more about them. Great read 100% recommend

Blair and Logan meet and have a one night stand on her last night before moving across the country with her little brother. They didn’t exchange many details about each other, but that didn’t stop Logan from deciding she knew who he was and chased him to Minnesota from LA. They have some run ins at their work place, but Blair doesn’t want to do anything to jeopardize her new job. Logan meets her brother and becomes kind of a mentor to him, all without realizing who he is. Logan eventually gets over himself, and he and Blair rekindle their attraction to one another. Spicy but with some unexpected suspense and danger. Once Logan was all in, he was all in! The found family aspect for Blair and Logan both was so great. Loved it!!!

Cute story! Enjoy hockey romances; don’t fully love how Blair and Logan initially meet, but they do have good chemistry. It’s a fun scenario of Blair and Logan having what they think was a one night thing, but end up in the same place when Blair moves unknowingly to where Logan is. Blair lost her parents, so she is now the guardian of her younger brother; good sibling dynamic between Blair and her brother, Reed. Blair and Logan have a bit of a feisty connection, but soon, deeper emotions begin to emerge. There’s also a bit of danger going on too! Enjoy that aspect! Overall, an entertaining romance!

I've loved reading every Rogue book in this series so far and this book was no exception. Blair (FMC) found herself the guardian of her brother - Reed after the death if her parents. Moving to a new town for a better job Blair gives herself one night of fun which happens to be with Hockey Player - Logan. Only for her life to become complicated shen she starts her new job and finds out which Logan really is. This is a heartwarming, heartbreaking but endearing read about rebuilding a life after loss, learning to trust and finding people you can rely on. I loved this book and I can't wait to get my hands on Bash's book now.

Piper gives us the absolutely brilliant standalone installment in the Going Rogue series! This story is about Blair and Logan and Blair's brother, Reed. Their initial meeting is meant to be a one and done thing which becomes complicated when she begins her new job and runs into Logan and pretends to not know him. He slowly gets to like her when he finds out about her taking care of her brother, Reed. Toss in a stalker and things get nutty! Dive into this beautifully written book with complex characters and plot twists that keep you guessing and turning pages throughout! I loved reading this story and highly recommend the series! Don't miss out on this book!!

Logan and Blair are one of the best couples of the series! They certainly met in a spicy way, but what comes from it is a heated tension that is undeniable for either of them, as much as they try to fight it. The bantering between them really set the stage for The Games You Play for me. Blair's brother Reed was also an adorable element to this book. Her role as the sister turned guardian adds a unique take that further develops the FMC and the interactions that take place with Logan and Reed. This book was a great addition to the Going Rogue series, and I look forward to more of the hockey players finding their HEA.

I couldn’t put this down, really well written with complex well developed characters. Blair and Logan have incredible chemistry. Their banter and interactions were chefs kiss. Logan’s character growth is fab and watching him fall for Blair and question his beliefs were amazing. Loved the sibling interactions between Blair and Reed and the wider friendship groups too:

I loved all the quiet and poignant moments in this book which has themes of grief and loss and acceptance. Definitely one I’ll read over and over again

When I first stated this series there was something about Logan that just drew me in. Starting his book was everything I hoped for for him. It absolutely grabbed my heart and didn’t let go from start to finish. Logan and Blair were such a perfect match. And of course watching the way Logan fell for Reed as well was just *chefs kiss*. I haven’t been disappointed with any of this series, but watching Logan go from playboy to settled down with love and a family was perfection.

This is book 4 of the Going Rogue series, a M/F hockey romance.

Spicy, sweet and all the feels!

A truly addicting story! I couldn't stop reading and read it all in one sitting! I loved Logan and Blair. From the moment they meet, they have instant chemistry. They're both only for one night, but neither can forget one another. Their story is like a fated mates romance, or like serendipity! They both have issues they have to work through, but they work through them together. My favorite part is the entire found family and support system Blair and Reed find. We also get more of our favorite characters from the past books. I love this world!

Blair & Logan
This fun and wonderfully crafted stand alone, was a true delight for me. I love that she sneaked out instead of him. He really did not take ti well, because she got the jump on him with that plan. Little does he know, that Blair is moving to the team's home town for a new start, and a new job. This is a good steamy standalone with more to this story, I refrain from spoilers. I loved it and do recommend as a good story!!!

This was such a good read! I was so happy that Logan got a book, and got to experience what most of his friends/brothers/teammates have! Blair really tugged at my heart strings with everything she, and her brother have been through. Logan and Reed's connection was wonderful to read, and I love how Logan immediately wanted to mentor him, and they developed such a great, brotherly relationship, and Logan became a male figure he really needed. Love that this can be read as a standalone, but also shows characters in previous books, so we get little snippets of their lives and updates.
