Evolution A200: A Bubonic Apocalypse

Rate this book
Centuries ago, a forbidden plague was sealed beneath Rome—
not cured, not conquered, merely silenced.
Time buried the truth. Faith guarded the secret. But hunger never dies.

When the tomb is disturbed, the sickness that wakes is older than empires and far less mortal.
It spreads like a whispered curse, raising the dead in its passing—yet not mindlessly.
Some infected learn.
Others remember.
And one mutation rises with the patience of a wolf wearing human skin.

In the ashes of the outbreak, one thing becomes
Someone wanted the plague freed.
Someone prepared for this.
And someone is still watching.

But the plague is evolving.
And what it becomes next may spell the end of humanity.

I really enjoyed this one. I love a zombie story be it book or tv, there were aspects that were cliche and crop up in every zombie story ever, but there were also unique parts that I really really enjoyed. The characters were slightly predictable (a sheriff, a farmer, a diner worker) but were explored in enough detail that I cared about (some) of them. A quick read that I'd recommend.

Evolution A200 is a very fast-starting zombie story that had some interesting and unusual turns to it.

It starts out with a group of mostly well-intentioned archeologists excavating the tomb of Romulus, the founder of Rome. Four months later, all of Europe has gone dark and there are rumors of the outbreak being seen on the eastern shores of the United States. A small town in Maine becomes the epicenter for a group of survivors that has to start figuring out what happened and what, if anything, can be done to save humanity. The questions just keep piling up...

Did someone know that there might be something bad in the tomb of Romulus?
How did the plague spread to the United States?
Is there someone that has a cure for this?

This was a decent, albeit short, zombie story that comes on quick and, unfortunately, ends just as quick. There are a lot of different takes on traditional zombie stories in this book: zombies that remember slights from their original life, a zombie virus that is not always fatal, and zombies that aren't mindless killing machines.

My biggest issue with the entire story is that it just ends. I understand that this is going to be a part of a larger arc, but this doesn't really clear up much that was brought up during the story. It really just felt like the first half of a story.

I will keep my eyes open for the next installment in this story; if anything just to finish up what I started.

Thank you to Nathaniel Connors, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

I really loved the fast paced of the book in the first few chapters. It really sets up the flow of the story as is a fast spreading disease. I like that it’s more than a zombie story and I hope see what happens next in this story, I really want them to survive. I’m expecting the next book to be not so much of a fast pace because it really is a good story, and we have so much to find out about how this story ends.
I would like to give thanks to the author for allowing this amazing opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion on it.

Thank you to the author for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Evolution A200: A Bubonic Apocalypse brings us to the end of the world brought on by an expedition gone wrong. When this story opens we start with our basic main characters. You have the guy who notices something is wrong and doesn't care because he wants the payout, the sidekick that follows him and the Doctor who wants to stop digging because she also knows something is wrong. In this case these explorers end up bringing on the end of life as we know it when they unleash a virus that turns people into zombies.

I thought this book was just fine. The writing was fine. The pacing wasn't too bad. It was a little slow, which isn't bad for a zombie novel, it was just missing the creepiness factor. I found the characters to be pretty average, I didn't have strong feelings towards any of them one way or the other.

The biggest disappoint with this book for me was the lack of zombie gore. I would have loved to have some more violent zombie action. Don't get me wrong, there were some good scenes in here. However, being a zombie story I would have enjoyed it a lot more if there had of been more gore.

The creepiest part of this book was how intelligent the zombies were. While I prefer my zombies brainless there is some merit to what intelligent zombies bring to the table. The thought of someone turning into a monster that is twisted enough to want to eat you raw while still being smart enough to organize an undead army is enough to keep you awake at night.

I received this book in return for an honest review.
A group of treasure hunters breach an ancient Roman tomb. Instead of treasure, they unleash a plague on Europe, then the world. A small town braces for the attack, unaware that the virus has mutated and that survival is almost impossible.

A different approach on Zombies. I received the book free in exchange for a honest review. Though I think the way the author has the start of the infection starting is different and unique, the story takes twists that could use a bit more explanation than was given.

A zombie novel with an actual plot AND mysteries?!

Firstly, I'm not usually into zombie novels. They tend to follow the same basic premise and offer few fresh perspectives. This is definitely the exception. It starts off with some archeologists digging up the tomb of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome.
To avoid spoilers, I won't say anything else. The mystery, the characters and the action are so well done that you won't see what happens next (even if it seems painfully obvious, this book will surprise you). The only complaint I had was I wish it were longer (especially with those shocking developments at the end!).
Still, this is the first of a planned series, so hopefully we'll get to find out more soon.
Either way, you should definitely give this a try!
