I made a promise to my best friend Nate on the battlefield the day he died. I’d watch over his family if he didn’t make it home.
I didn’t expect keeping that promise would feel like betrayal.
Emily was Nate’s world. And now, she’s mine in every way I never saw coming.
I arrived in Harmony’s End to offer support, and quietly fade into the background. But Emily isn’t someone you forget. She’s smart, strong and impossible to ignore.
She's raising their son with grit and grace, and trying to carry it all alone. The more time I spend near her, the harder it gets to keep my distance. The guilt gnaws at me.
And yet, I can’t walk away.
While the town buzzes with gossip and a land developer threatens to bulldoze everything Nate fought for, I have to decide if honoring the past means shutting the door on the future.
Or, can love, even the kind you never saw coming, be its own kind of promise kept?
A Marine’s Promise is a heart-tugging story of second chances, forbidden feelings, and the quiet war between grief and healing.
This story had potential. I wish it had been a full length novel. Sometimes a short story is all you need but this needed more bulk.
The timeline was all over the place, and not in a good way - like the author forgot what she wrote just a page before. It was early evening, dusk, then before 5am in the same scene. Then it seemed like later that day, but it may have been weeks, only for them to reference the sunset. At the second town meeting it said six months had passed but also durning that same meeting an incident was mentioned that referenced the first time the MMC went into the hardware store, just a few days prior to the town meeting?? Then, after that meeting, the MMC and FMC were on the front porch and declared they loved each other. So, that made the story frustrating and very hard to follow.
As a reader, I’m left asking how much time passed between the death of the FMC’s husband and the MMC showing up to make good on a promise to take care of FMC and her son? The MMC was supposedly the late husband’s best friend (many years spent deployed together in the military) yet MMC and FMC never met before? And days later or maybe 6 months later (who knows?), FMC has moved on and is in love with MMC. Umm…
Like I said, the potential was there. With some editing and more length, this could be a great story. But as it stands, I had a hard time following it. Timeline and details are important.
A Marine's Promise: A Clean and Wholesome Small Town Romance Autumn Grace
The marine in question has just lost his best buddy and inherited a partnership in his home that comes with doctor wife and son Cody. And small town gossip is rife. This is a romantic short. The marine is tall, handsome, and looks like he could bench press a cow according to a member of the gossip mill.
That mill is already working on who will sit with Cody during the honeymoon.
One of those books that shifts back and forth between the marine and the doc chapter by chapter.
And the two bond to the dance of fireflies with Cody between them on the porch swing.
This is my second time to read and review this book. I enjoyed every part. The speed was right. Nothing rushed, but more good easy going. About a family that lost her marine husband while serving us in the USA.His best friend promised her husband, while dying, he would look after and take care of is, who was a country dr and their young son. But the Marine did so much more. He was quiet, gentle and listened. The soldier started with repairs that needed done. He stepped up for them and neighbors too
Although not a Christmas story per se, it is a story of bringing a town together in support of each other. Accepting a stranger sent by a promise to his friend. Emily and Cody were trying to continue with their life after Nate was KIA. Then Luke arrives and in the silence makes his mark by fixing things that need done. I received a copy and this is my honest and voluntary review. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Other reviewers have given the synopsis, so I’ll just say that I love this book. I love the way it shows the value of trust and patience; I love the way it emphasizes that family doesn’t necessarily mean blood relatives; and I love the way music is interwoven into the story, adding an added dimension that speaks straight from and to the heart. Music is a major part of my life, and Luke’s songs touch my soul. My only complaint is that the story isn’t long enough - I want more!
This short story is a sweet, clean and heartwarming read. First about grief, then honor and loyalty, finally love. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more by the talented author, Autumn Grace.
Disclaimer: I received this ebook from BookFunnel and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
Luke is a Marine who was best friends with Nate. When Nate is killed, Luke promises to look after his wife, Emily and son, Cody. Nate also has it in his will that Luke is part owner of the farm. Harmony's End is a small town where gossip runs rampant and strangers are judged, but Luke has a quiet strength and helps others around town and wins them over.
Fake-Engaged to My Off-Limits Bodyguard by C.C. Hollins
If you enjoy a swoony, protective hero and a romance that’s equal parts sweet, emotional, and a little bit spicy, this one is definitely a good pick. It pulled me in quickly, and I found myself smiling at the banter and rooting for the characters more than I expected. Such a fun, feel good read.
A war widow and a soldier returning from the battlefield, can they build a relationship built on trust and love? Great character development and a realist scenario make this book hard to put down.
