"A smart, tense, and emotionally layered mystery with staying power."
- The San Francisco Book Review

Oakland defense attorney Joe Turner ventures to a small town in the Deep South to defend an autistic teenager accused of murdering the local high school football hero. The tense trial is seen through the eyes of the jury, a diverse group that struggles with their own preconceptions about autism and fractures under the weight of their decision. But is there a plant on the jury? And whose side are they on?

Desperate to shield his endearing client from a life sentence, Joe is assisted by his daring girlfriend and his colorful investigator. Together, the three urbanites navigate a world of Southern charm and hillbilly legend where secrets whisper through the hollers, just out of reach.

Written by a trial attorney, Holler Whispers captures the raw emotion of the courtroom and depicts a criminal justice system fraught with human frailty. Endorsed by the Autism Society, the story explores how society treats its most vulnerable and reveals how the truth can come from the most unexpected voices.

5 stars for Holler Whispers by T.L. Bequette! Thank you to NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for my ARC ebook. Holler Whispers is a southern noire crime thriller that follows a San Francisco defense attorney as he goes to a small town in Georgia to defend an autistic teenager that is accused of murdering the towns star football player. This story deals with sensitive themes of small town southern culture, flaws in the justice system, and the lack of knowledge about vulnerable individuals. I loved the defense attorney-Joe Turner’s determination to prove the innocence of Carl Ledbetter-a character I also really enjoyed. Turner is delicate with his client and takes time to learn about his autism and his unique personality. As the details of the case unfold nothing is revealed to the reader too soon. As the evidence is presented and the jurors deliberated, I felt real tension and the anxiety that Joe Turner, Carl Ledbetter, and his family surly felt in the story. I never once guessed who the real killer was and wasn’t even sure it wasn’t Carl! This book did a great job of giving the reader just enough to want to keep the pages turning and I could see this being a courtroom drama show or movie. For any crime thriller fans this was a great story! I highly recommend checking out T.L. Bequette’s Holler Whispers releasing 3/12/26! Holler Whispers is the 4th in T. L. Bequette’s Joe Turner Mysteries series. This read was an engrossing legal mystery filled with courtroom drama and attention to detail that only a true criminal defense attorney could do justice to. Holler Whispers is set in the Deep South in the small town of Barton, Georgia. It’s the type of place where Friday night lights are king, southern graces are expected, and lives can be made or broken by how much money one’s family has and where you rank on the social ladder.

When the town’s 17-year-old golden boy and quarterback, Justin Holt, is murdered at his home at a football season kickoff party, Joe Turner, a criminal defense attorney from Oakland, California is brought in by his friend and private investigator Chuck Argenal to represent the alleged murderer, Carl Ledbetter. Carl, who’s the football team manager, is on the Autism Spectrum.

In Holler Whispers, T.L. Bequette delves deftly into the role that football plays in this small town that seems to impact almost every facet of life there. With the help of Joe’s friend Chuck, a town legend in his own right, and his girlfriend, Eddy, they sort through the myriad of evidence, battle against and benefit from the small town connections and rumor mill, and search to find motive for murder in this twisting and turning journey to seek justice.

Many thanks to the author, T. L. Bequette, publisher, Black Rose Writing, and NetGalley for this ARC which has an expected publication date of 3/12/26.

Holler Whispers is a beautifully layered legal drama that carries the quiet weight of a Southern mystery and the emotional pull of a character‑driven story. From the moment Joe Turner steps into this small, secret‑laden town, the novel creates an atmosphere thick with tension and unspoken history. What struck me most was how tenderly the author handles the case at the centre of it all—an autistic teenager accused of an unthinkable crime—and how the narrative never loses sight of his humanity.

The shifting jury perspectives add a compelling texture, revealing the biases, fears, and fragile hopes that shape their deliberations. It’s a structure that feels both intimate and unsettling, and it gives the courtroom scenes a raw, lived‑in authenticity. The Southern setting hums in the background—full of charm, folklore, and whispers that seem to echo through the hollers themselves.

There’s a deep compassion running through this story, especially in the way it explores vulnerability and the flaws of a justice system built on human frailty. The mystery keeps its grip until the final pages, but it’s the emotional truth of the characters—their doubts, loyalties, and quiet courage—that lingers long after.

A thoughtful, atmospheric, and deeply engaging read.

Joe Turner returns in yet another engaging legal thriller accompanied again by his investigator, Chuck Argenal, who has an expanded role in this novel as the setting is his home town in the Deep South. Depictions of the local characters are spot on. Also returning is Joe’s charming and adventurous partner, Eddy Busier.

What sets Holler Whispers apart from Bequette’s three earlier mysteries is the young client who Turner defends on a murder charge. The eighteen-year-old is neurodivergent, specifically autistic, and as American as apple pie if you count the love of baseball, football, and pepperoni pizza as indicators.

Turner develops a heartfelt and sensitive fondness for his client. The level of compassion, respect, and understanding is obviously what caused the Autism Society to endorse this book. For this reader, it’s something I always want more of.

As always, Bequette keeps the reader on edge until the final chapter. Tough to put down!

This was a gripping and well constructed mystery that kept me engaged throughout. The tension builds steadily, and I appreciated how the story took its time to develop both the case and the characters. while there were a few slower moments, they didn't take away from the overall impact. The payoff toward the end made it worth the journey.

I liked the book and the characters overall. I didn’t like the fact that there were no hints as to “who really dunnit” until the last dozen pages or so. I think the story would have been better served by a few clues to the killer sprinkled about in the last half of the book. Just sayin’.
