Ridin' with My Best Friend: A Dark Holiday Romance

Rate this book
Travel Grays has faced many hardships in life, including migrating from Haiti with her parents to America. Now, at thirty-three, that same pain is reinforced when her lover, and the father of her child, puts her and her son in danger. With only one place in mind to go, she turns to the one man who has always had her back, her best friend, Trek.

Trek Mounts is a thirty-three-year-old father and transporter of many things. His days in the streets are far in the past, but he's in the balance, having his hands in both legal and illegal moves. Though cautious and content with his life, he is left desiring a piece of something that seems to be missing.

After agreeing to help his best friend during her time of need, a simple favor evolves into a meaningful and passionate act. As Trek helps Travel carry the heavy load of rebuilding her foundation, she aids him in discovering the more he's been searching for.

While under the same roof, Trek begins to see Travel in a whole new light, and the idea of having it all starts to feel attainable. There's just one problem... They each have a co-parent refusing to let them go. When a recipe for disaster is set in motion, will Travel and Trek rise above the chaos—or find themselves choking on a cold dish of revenge?

I’m still not sure where the “dark romance” part was supposed to kick in, but okay. This was an entertaining idea in theory, but the execution had me side-eyeing these characters like… really? They were in love for YEARS and never spoke up because they were scared, and somehow that led to whole families with other people. The math was not mathing.
The MMC definitely gaslit his child’s mother a little too confidently, which made a few scenes more awkward than emotional. The school plotline popped in, waved hello, and disappeared. Mook got a sprinkle of karma, but honestly one straightforward conversation could’ve saved everyone the drama.
The romance felt lukewarm and the “dark” elements didn’t really darken. And while it technically took place around Christmas, the holiday vibes were giving more “background prop” than festive.

What a wonderful story. I loved everything about this story.

The love that Travel and Trek shared since childhood was amazing.

I learned that people tend to hold on to dead relationships even when they both know its been over for years. Rather its ego or just wishful thinking, let go and move on.

In some cases it might cause you your life.

Comfortability

Feelings are meant to be explored not hidden be open on what you want trusting your friend will not hurt or ruin your relationship with muddled water. Especially if the feelings are mutual of exploring a monogamous partner.

Enjoyed it!

I did not get the dark romance in the book, but there was definitely some romance in it. Travel and Trek were best friends turned lovers and I enjoyed the interactions and chemistry between them.

Good!

Loved the way Trek loved and stood in the gap to be whatever Travel needed at the moment. That kind of thoughtful care is rare. Nice to see a man with that of awareness and maturity.

Great quick read. But long enough to enjoy the plot. Travel and Treks story was really cute. Best friends from childhood. I love the romantic gestures Trek made to Travel. She was in a traumatic relationship previously. It was a typical love story but with a different plot so I loved it.
