An Inheritance of Faeries

Rate this book
All’s faerie in love and war.

Ravencroft Hall has stood empty for twenty years—empty of mortals, at least.

After the dark wizards who owned the manor departed in a hurry, the estate was left to run wild. Now Ravencroft is famous as the most faerie-infested place in England.

Kitty Boot grew up in the nearby village of Little Groating. Fascinated by the Fair Folk since a chance encounter with a fae prince as a child, she leads walking tours for tourists on the weekends. Kitty doesn’t consider it trespassing. The owners are gone (rumored to be exiled in Romania), so where’s the harm?

Everything is going swimmingly until the heir of those same dark wizards shows up out of the blue to lay claim to his estate.

But Richard Ravencroft is nothing like his parents. He despises all things magical and intends to sell the property to hotel developers—once he locates a dangerous family heirloom and gets rid of the pesky boggart in residence.

With the future of both her village and the Fair Folk at stake, Kitty worms her way into Richard’s confidence while secretly doing all she can to thwart his plans. Luckily, her best friends Layla and Briar run the local bakery Sugar & Sprites—and who can resist a basket of warm cinnamon scones?

Lord Ravencroft would be easier to hate if he weren’t so nice—not to mention irritatingly attractive. But he’s also stubborn and headstrong, and Kitty will have to steal Richard’s heart if she hopes to save them both.

Escape to a magical England where every home has a brownie to polish the silver, tea and cakes abound, and romance sneaks up like a gentle enchantment. Perfect for fans of Emily Wilde, A Witches’ Guide to Magical Innkeeping, and the Myrtlewood Crones!

If you love your fantasy cozy, romantic, and gently enchanted, An Inheritance of Faeries feels like curling up with a cup of tea in a village where faeries are very real—and very opinionated.

Kat Ross opens the Ravencroft Hall series with a story that leans into classic fae folklore while keeping the stakes personal and the tone charmingly light. This is not a sweeping epic full of battles and bloodshed. Instead, it’s a story about home, inheritance, and believing in magic even when the modern world wants to pave it over.

A Village Where Faeries Linger

Kitty Boot has always believed in the Fair Folk—ever since a childhood encounter with a fae prince changed the course of her life. Now grown, she spends her weekends leading curious tourists through the grounds of Ravencroft Hall, an estate long rumored to be crawling with faeries, boggarts, and other magical nuisances. While on a tour, Richard Ravencroft, the long-lost heir, appears out of nowhere. Kitty’s quiet, magical corner of the world is suddenly at risk.

Enter Richard Ravencroft, determined to clear the land, locate a valuable heirloom, and sell the estate for development. Practical, skeptical, and uninterested in faerie legends, Richard is everything Kitty fears—and precisely the kind of person fate enjoys meddling with.

Cozy Fantasy with Romantic Charm

What An Inheritance of Faeries does best is atmosphere. The English countryside setting feels alive with magic, from mischievous fae creatures to the comforting routines of village life. Ross clearly delights in the more minor details: baked goods, folklore, eccentric locals, and magical beings who are more troublesome than terrifying.

The romance unfolds slowly and naturally, built on banter, reluctant teamwork, and the gradual realization that not everything necessary can be measured in profit or logic. Kitty’s belief in faeries contrasts beautifully with Richard’s grounded worldview, creating a satisfying emotional arc as the two are forced to confront what they truly value.

A Gentle, Whimsical Read

This book leans firmly into cozy fantasy territory, favoring heart and charm over high drama. Readers looking for intricate magic systems or dark fae politics may find it too soft, but for fans of comforting fantasy with romantic undertones, it’s precisely the point.

There’s an underlying theme of preservation—of magic, community, and history—that adds quiet depth to the story without weighing it down. It’s the kind of book that reminds you why fairytales endure: not because they’re grand, but because they make ordinary lives feel magical.

Final Thoughts

An Inheritance of Faeries is a delightful start to a new series, perfect for readers who enjoy:
* Cozy fantasy with faerie folklore
* Small-village settings and magical estates
* Romantic tension rooted in opposing worldviews
* Stories about protecting what makes a place—and a life—special

If you’re in the mood for a gentle, whimsical escape filled with fae mischief and slow-burn romance, this one is well worth adding to your TBR.

'Im rather partial to Kat Ross's Fantasy. Im somewhat more frightened about here inate ability to mould such literature from her mind with, apparently minimum effort.!!!
But therein lies the rub. Book 1, is a much lighter & refreshing run through a magical kingdom which might be more familiar to many more of us /you and as such,
I do think you'll be hooked & more than ready to top up on the second book because the cards are alread dealt in B1

Is magic a dark curse or a brilliant legacy? Can one refuse to inherit it?

Kitty Boot was born and raised right outside the intimidating Ravencroft Hall (former home of a prestigious line of wizards now in exile for treason) and the Wild Wood (a dangerous forest teeming with the Fair Folk) in Little Groating, a village frozen in an older age. After a powerful experience with a faerie in her youth, Kitty developed a fascination with the Fair Folk which led to her current occupation: Fantastical Tour Guide of Ravencroft Hall. Unfortunately for Kitty (and her whole community), the son of the exiled wizards, Lord Richard Ravencroft, has returned to sell the manor to resort developers–which will break the ancient pact with the fae Court of Silver Shadows which protects Kitty’s sleepy village from both dangerous unseelie fae and the encroaching modern world. Can Kitty convince Richard to preserve the very legacy he’s spent his whole life running away from before it’s too late? Or will he abandon their fledgling romance for the anonymity of metropolitan London?

In this first novel in the Ravencroft Hall series, Kat Ross weaves the beginning of a magical adventure in An Inheritance of Faeries: A whimsical romantic fantasy with magic and fae; introducing us to Little Groating, an idyllic British village still firmly planted in ye olden days of yore where encounters with the Fair Folk are an everyday reality. While most of the story revolves around passionate “fae ambassador” Kitty Boot and the brooding Lord Richard Ravencroft, reluctant heir to a dark legacy who just wants to be a doctor, the supporting cast is delightful: my favorite being the hilariously melodramatic talking bird Sir Francis Drake and the mysterious dryad Nyx. In a nod to much earlier European folklore, the Fair Folk here are properly tricky and dangerous: I’d give it an “ooky-spooky” level of scary, like a “grown-up” Series of Unfortunate Events.

Throughout the book a battle is being waged between tradition and the wheels of change; the legacies our parents leave us, whether or not we want them; fighting for the good of the community versus for the individual; and the difference between doing what is right and what is easy. Despite the almost existential philosophical undertone, An Inheritance of Faeries is a witty, light-but-tense romp through the world of magic and unexpected romance with a finish-it-in-one-sitting page-turning urgency (I might have stayed up past my bedtime reading this) and I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series!

My only critique of this wonderful book is that some of the modern references felt a bit too pointed: we’ve already had our “what do you mean, there’s no wi-fi here?” moment which clearly establishes the contemporary setting, did we really need to specifically mention Netflix? IMHO, these namedrops don’t serve the setting of the story and will in fact, cause the book to age poorly in the long run.

Inheritances can be tricky, especially when you're a member of a family of dark wizards who wants nothing to do with their magical past and whose parents have been exiled such as Richard Ravencroft. Richard returns to Ravencroft Hall with every intention of ridding himself of the burdens of his childhood. Kitty Boot has a different end goal in mind for the manor that she has a special connection to. Richard and Kitty are pulled together by their differing end goals. This leads to uncovering secrets, discovering heirlooms, and navigating the complications of living in the world of the Fair Folk. In the end, which path with Richard choose?

Kat Ross is typically pretty dark as an author and this story is more on the lighter side. When it comes to fantasy series, the characteristic that is key for me as a reader is to not have everything thrown at you at once such as complex, multi-layered world building and a laundry list of characters with little to no connections. Kat Ross handled this very well. The only part for me that was a bit odd was when the outside world would enter the scene. I was hoping there would be more of an explanation of how the people/aspects of the outside world interact with the fae. This book is the first installment of a series that has a lot of promise. I am looking forward to future visits to the village of Little Groating and Ravencroft Hall.

Kitty Boot grew up in the tiny village of Little Groating and leads walking tours of Ravencroft Hall on the weekends for tourists eager to catch a glimpse of the Fair Folk who inhabit an area known as the most fairy infested place left in England. Richard Ravencroft was just a child when his parents were sent in exile to Romania, he is back after twenty years and is determined to rid himself of his parent's dark magical legacy. Unfortunately, his search for the dangerous magic family heirloom is foiled at every turn by the boggart now inhabiting Ravencroft Hall. Kitty will soon discover that the developers he wants to sell the old estate too will be the end of the fairies and the magical forest where they live, so she will do everything in her power to convince him not to sell.
These characters are all highly entertaining with fun, sometime laugh out loud funny personality quirks that kept me engaged from the start. Magic, mayhem, faeries, and some surprising twists and turns in the plot make this a wonderful must-read series starter and have left me eager to read more.

I received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, Thank you Kat. Usually Kat's book tend to be a little dark but this one was quite the exception. We meet Kitty Boot, lover of all things Faerie driven and who loves giving tours if only some of her clients would behave. And the biggest thing to look at is the Ravencroft mansion now empty and in it's own way a keeper of secrets. The family were exiled but one day the son returns. His goal is to sell the place, Kitty's goal is to make him keep it. What are the chances that she will get her wish? Richard Ravencroft wants nothing to do with this inheritance, but before he can sell he has to find a family heirloom, and let's not forget that pesky boggart. As Kitty and Richard work at cross purposes, they start to learn about the other and will things take off??? I suggest reading this book. When it is described as whimsical, it is. We have a wonderful village with all sorts of lovely residents. Will Richard sell? Or will Kitty win? And what happened to that Faerie boy who found Kitty when she was just a girl?

A new type of series from Kat Ross and it is labelled 'Young adult'.
I started reading fantasy in the 80's and a lot of books that are nowadays labelled 'Young adult' (or re-labelled when new editions hit the shelves) are for me more traditional fantasy books.

A lighter tone, a more fairytale and 'smaller' setting. A blend of fairies, brownies and other fae elements with a bit of Arthurian legends blended into the story.

Being (way) over 50 it is sometimes a question whether the book is intended for my age-range, but I really enjoyed this title. A fun storyline, relatable characters and a nice set-up for a new series. Yes, the world is less complicated than other series written by Kat Ross, but has a lot of potential for new stories.

The story leaves a lot of openings to other story arcs and I will certainly pick up the next title in this series.

This was the most amazing hidden gem of a 5 star read! Even though it’s in more of the young adult realm, I had so much fun reading the story and meeting the eccentric but lovable characters. It was reminiscent of Diana Wynne Jones to me and that is the highest praise! The storytelling and character development are superb! There is magic and humor and everything you could want from a whimsical romantic fantasy. I would love to read more stories from this series! Like saving Mr. Deen, the bargain, or just more antics from Ravenscroft Hall! I am also excited to read more by this author. A truly great read and so much fun! One note: Richard does reveal Kitty’s name to the fae King and Queen and then later makes it clear he doesn’t want to reveal names. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

I loved reading An Inheritance of Faeries. This is the first book I've read by the author, but I'll definitely be looking for more. The style of writing is a pleasure to read. It's fluid and gentle, and perfectly suited to the cozy tone of the book. The characters are all distinct and very well developed, both the human and non-human ones. I loved the village and surrounding area the story is set in. It's the type of place I could dream of living. The story itself is engrossing, in a wonderfully relaxing way. It's a perfect story to read when you want to feel hopeful. I can't wait to read future books in the series! I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy cozy fantasy with romance and fae.

I really enjoyed reading An Inheritance of Faeries. This was my first book by Kat Ross, and I’ll definitely be looking for more.

The writing style is gentle and easy to settle into, perfectly suited to the cozy tone of the story.

The setting was a standout for me. The village and surrounding area felt warm, whimsical, and full of charm. It’s the kind of place you wish you could visit. The story isn’t overly complicated or fast-paced, but that’s part of what made it so enjoyable. It’s engaging in a calm, comforting way.

This is a lighter, fairytale-style fantasy with fae and romance, and I found it to be a really pleasant, hopeful read. I’m looking forward to continuing the series.

‘If you leave, the Wild Wood withers. The faerie roads close. The magic fades’

Banished dark wizards, an abandoned Hall, mischievous brownies and the quest to save the world as she knows it suddenly becomes the reason mortal Kitty Boot gets up every day. When the Richard, the only son of two wizards that tried to overthrow the queen years before, returns intent on selling his birthright without knowing the far reaching consequences of such actions, it’s up to Kitty to set him on the right path no matter what the cost. A highly enjoyable tale with a fantastic setting, this one leaves you waiting hopefully for the promised next adventure.

If you love tales of magic and faeries in a gem of an English village, of brave heroines who will do anything to save the place they love and stop it being sold to money grabbing developers with nefarious intentions, and reluctant (but very handsome) heirs who don't value their heritage, then this book is for you. I couldn't put it down and simply cannot wait for the next installment.
Kat Ross is one of my favourite fantasy authors. Ever since I first read The Fourth Element trilogy, I have been entranced by her writing. This series looks to be right up there and book 2 cannot come soon enough.

This was an excellent first installment in a series. Kitty Boot, our plucky protagonist, lives in the village of Little Groating which is an isolated piece of land that is intertwined with the Wild Wood and the land of Faerie. Kitty runs a sort of unsanctioned tourism business where she takes folks on faerie tours where you can occasionally spot the real thing. On one such tour, she notices that Richard Ravencroft, the lord of the manor, has returned to the Hall which has sat empty since his parents' exile. His goal is to divest himself of the luxurious manor as quickly as possible, but the unscrupulous buyers are hoping to turn it into a fairy theme park. Even worse, if Richard sells the Hall, he renounces his magic and the door to Faerie will close, meaning that everything that makes Little Groating so whimsical and special will disappear. Kitty is determined to save Little Groating, and, as she spends more time with Richard, his magical inheritance. This was a cute little fantasy tale, and, while their adventure may be wrapped up for this story, there are still many magical hijinks to come, and readers will be wanting to hear more!

I really enjoyed this book by Kat Ross. It was easy to read, fast-paced, and genuinely fun from start to finish. The world-building was engaging without being overwhelming, with lots of different types of fairies and magic that kept things interesting. I also liked that the romance was there but not over the top, it added to the story without taking it over. Overall, it was a great, enjoyable read and perfect if you’re looking for a light fantasy with charm, adventure, and just the right touch of love.

Firstly, thank you Kat Ross for allowing me to be part of your ARC team.

This book was a perfect little gift palate cleanser before I get back into some long series. With roughly 300 pages, it was a nice quick and easy read.

I’ll be honest, the first chapter or so I wasn’t too sure about it but I wanted to give it an honest go and I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed it, the characters were cute and I could picture the look of the village in my head.

And can we talk about how adorable Nan & Dr. Singer are?! 😍

Again, thank you Kat Ross for having me as part of your ARC team!

If you didn’t believe in faeries before, you may change your mind by the time you get to the end of this book.

Being raised in a Wizard family is sometimes not easy. When your parents betray the laws of the mortal world where they live, growing up without them to become a good and sane adult is an extreme challenge. Now the Ravencroft heir is of age to inherit the family property. Does he sell to get out from beneath the family curse or does he embrace his heritage? If he sells, what happens to the faeries? Can Master Ravencroft find his way back to his heritage and embrace it?

I enjoyed this cozy so very much. The character voices are so clear and the setting is gorgeous. The magical old English countryside can be breathed in, even if the setup is contemporary. A story that can be read in layers, too -- a cry against unscrupulous land speculation and an encouragement to overcome our fears. A satisfying read.

A very sweet and cozy read, with a fun cast of quirky characters. It was enjoyable, if rather predictable. It's pretty low-stakes, with the fae being either adorable or, at worst, pesky. It's certainly not my favourite of this author's works - she does high-stakes drama better, in my opinion - but it's a perfect feel-good winter warmer.

An magical tale of faries, a lonely wizard that dont want his inheritance and the girl that is in love with a faerie prince since her childhood. I did like the comunity, all willing to save their twon but also accept Richard as the kind man that he is. Kitty not be the typical damsel need to be save and to be her to save Richard. All the faeries, brownies and fae court were just amazing.
