In the mood for a book with a hook?
Boy oh boy… do I have a rec for you!
‘The Line Up’ is one of the latest debuts to sprout from Australian soil (or should I say, surf?) - and if, like me, you’re in your thriller era right now, you need to put this on your radar.
From the first chapter to the last, I was completely enthralled by this local(ish) murder mystery, and while I didn’t manage to solve the case before everything wrapped up… I couldn’t get enough of the real-time race to solve the crime.
Set in the stunning town of Byron Bay, the story follows Bo, a pro-surfer turned round-the-clock webcam watcher… and what happens after a livestream, when he witnesses a lot more than he ever logged in for.
Nobody likes a spoiler, and in this genre especially, knowing too much beforehand can ruin the entire experience, so I’m going to leave the synopsis at that. But if the premise alone hasn’t already sold you, let me say: the plot will impress you even more!

The Lineup is definitely a book you want to get your hands on, it's a gripping murder mystery set in the famous location of Byron Bay.
Bo Curren once a champion surfer can no longer bear to be near the ocean, it’s been five years and addictively he watches his favourite surf beach on the 24 hour surf webcam from his laptop and drinks too much whiskey. I liked Bo’s character so much and how he struggled with his demons is an integral part of the story.
When one day Bo catches a murder on the deserted Bryron Bay beach via the webcam the police don’t believe him and the body is missing. We follow Bo as he tries to get back into the world he hides from to track down the murderer.
The last part of the book is pure adrenaline and I loved it! A well paced story, what a brilliant debut for Nicholas Timms! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for his next publication.

Bo has avoided anything to do with his hometown for years, carrying scars from events connected to surfing, his once most loved pastime. He can’t even be near the ocean, let alone surf.
Once a champion surfer, now, hiding from the world and watching his favourite beach from behind his laptop via the 24 hour “surf webcam”
When he tries to alert the police after witnessing a murder happen live on webcam on the beach, no one believes him. He is the washed up surfer who isolates himself from everyone. It’s a crazy story.. especially as the footage is gone, and no body is found
But Bo can’t shake the images from his mind with the murderers surfboard baring very unique markings
He knows it’s up to him to find the murderer and bring them to justice, but can he face the haunting memories of his past to go back to the world that turned their backs on him
Strap in for a wild tidal wave of a ride! I couldn’t put this down, and was glued to the page.
Nicholas is a masterful story teller, and had me completely immersed in the setting and characters very quickly. Solidly paced through out while he balances the trauma and action perfectly
While the action had my heart racing, I was most drawn to Bo, and his journey as he came face to face with the past he was trying so hard to run from. His character development is the core to the book and you will be cheering for him throughout

The Lineup will hit you like a big wave at Teahupo'o and bring you back to shore with a thump.
Do not worry if you don't know or follow surfing as that will matter not when you get hooked on this storyline.
Bo Curren is a washed up surfer from Byron Bay who is carrying a lot of trauma from an incident years earlier. Spending his days holed up in a dark apartment up in Brisbane he spends his days watching live surfcams.
After witnessing what looks like a murder on a beach he knows only too well, Bo becomes determined to face his fears and find a killer. All he needs to do is find the distinctive surfboard he saw through the camera.
The ensuing story will have you on tenterhooks many times as Bo and an old school friend try to solve this crime. The unraveling of Bo's trauma and the anxiety he now suffers from was brought to the page with empathy and realism. I just wanted to give him a hug.
The rawness of the surfing community, the tribal nature, the unspoken laws and regulations gave the story a menacing feel. Surfers may not be outlaws but they have their own rules that are abided by, or else.
The build up to the conclusion was heart pounding and had me holding my breath. Thank goodness for the epilogue.
Another sensational debut from a new Aussie author who will have quite a few fans after this book.

This book shocked me in the very best way. I never thought a book about surfing would be of any interest to me but I was completely blown away by The Lineup once I started it I couldn’t stop reading it. The story got under my skin and refused to let me go. A fantastic debut from Nicholas Timms, I look forward to what he has in store for us next.
Bo Curran is a bit of a mess. A former surfing champion who can’t even step foot on the sand of a beach anymore. He moved away from his home in Byron Bay, away from everyone and everything that he loves after an incident at his last tournament. He hasn’t been in the water since. He can’t forgive himself for what happened this father and he now spends his days watching the surf cam from his studio apartment in Brisbane. That is until he witnesses a murder on the beach on his computer and the police don’t take him seriously. He knows if he can find that distinctive surfboard he can find the killer, but to do so will require him to be his old self again.
I really liked Bo. He was so broken, so traumatised but he had a good heart and sense of right and wrong. I could feel his fear, when he had panic attacks I was just crushed for him. I was cheering g him on, hoping he could overcome his anxiety.
I loved the Byron Bay setting. I felt like I was there. I have only the town once before but I could see the streets and the beaches in my mind as I was reading the author clearly loves it there. There is some language in this book that I usually cannot tolerate, but I know that this is probably the way people in the surfing community would speak so I managed to ignore my feelings about a certain word. It felt realistic to me that these men would talk in this manner.
A little thing for me, I loved the Michael Connelly and Harry Bosch references! Did make me laugh.

He seemed to just get completely shunned and didn't get the impression that those who knew him best could see how he was feeling. Then to be told you're pretty much crazy? Ahhh the feels of family.
I had theories, and the theories of my theories even had theories but I think I just look too deep into stories. Whilst I had a gut feeling, I felt like that was too easy an option and ended up being right. It doesn't detract from the overall story or my enjoyment of it but I do love to be completely shocked when it comes to thrillers.
I loved that this story was set in Australia. In particular Byron Bay's surf scene. Books that have the beach and ocean as a strong subplot really tend to draw me in.
I think the ending wrapped the book up well but I still do have lingering feelings wanting more answers!

As Bo teams up with reporter Jess to unravel the mystery, suspicion falls on just about everyone, and I was constantly second-guessing who I could trust. I never imagined I’d enjoy a novel so deeply rooted in surfing culture, but alongside a well crafted plot, it was the characters that really won me over. Firstly, I'll just say, I know nothing about surfing, I have never attempted to go surfing, and I doubt I ever will given I have zero balance skills.
But, that did not stop me getting totally invested in this upcoming new thriller that dives heavily into surfing culture.
Yes, there is a lot of surfing involved, but there is also an excellent mystery and characters with depth and substance.
Bo and reporter Jess, have both come back to their hometown of Byron Bay with a whole lot of trauma, and a whole lot to prove to both themselves and their community.
Together, they find someone who still believes in them, even when they don't believe in themselves.
This story also delves into grief, redemption, and forgiveness - all while giving the reader an absorbing crime to solve.
Definitely add this one to your wishlist if you love great Aussie crime novels.

What a great thriller debut! I was hooked from the start, eager to learn why champion surfer Bo Curren now has PTSD from the beach, no longer surfs and is holed up in his Brisbane apartment where he is reduced to watching the surf cam while intoxicated instead. That is, until he witnesses a murder through the webcam at his old local and is pulled back into the world he left behind.
I loved the familiar local settings, from Byron to Noosa, and the way the novel captures both the good and bad sides of surf culture. The stereotypes had me chuckling at times, and the contrast between the laid-back towns of the past and what they’ve become now is very real.
The twist at the end had me on the edge of my seat, I genuinely didn’t know which way it was going to go. What a ride! I can’t wait to see what else Nicholas Timms has in store for us.

Whilst not being able to get himself into the water, he still watches the beaches and surfing via a 24 hour surf webcam. Watching the cameras, he witnesses what he thinks is a murder. But no crime is reported, so he feels compelled to undertake amateur sleuthing to determine whether a crime did occur.
The story is addictive and an impressive debut. Will be keen to read more from this author.

Slowly the past is revealed and we understand why Bo feels this way.
I was really intrigued reading this story.
Things are slowly revealed which made me more and more curious. I was completely invested in this story and loved it.

Things are slowly revealed which made me more and more curious. I was completely invested in this story and loved it.

This year’s debut Australian authors have produced some truly remarkable stories and Nicholas Timms’ The Lineup is another fantastic addition to the debut list. It is a gritty and suspenseful murder mystery set in Byron Bay’s surfing community.
🏄♂️ The writing is fantastic in this book. Timm’s has crafted a tense layered and action packed narrative that’s gripping. I questioned the motives of all the characters wondering who I should and shouldn’t trust.
I liked Bo and was invested in his character, drawn to his struggles with trauma and grief and his determination to find answers to what happened on the beach that day.
If you’re looking for a thrilling read that gives Point Break vibes then I highly recommend The Lineup.

This is an excellent debut crime thriller! Bo Curren was once a champion surfer, but a tragedy has caused him to be unable to even set foot near the ocean. He spends his days watching the 24/7 livestream of surf beaches instead. One day though, he witnesses a murder but the Police dismiss him. He's convinced he must be imagining things until his old friend Jess gets in touch to say she knows what he saw was true. The murderer had a distinctive surfboard, and he knows if he can find its owner he'll find the killer. But he's going to have to face his fears if he's to solve the case.
This was such an addictive read! It was full of tension and the final couple of chapters were pure adrenaline that had my heart racing. You can tell that Nicholas is a surfer himself - his descriptions were spot on. Amateur detective novels are hit or miss for me, but I think because Bo knew the ins and outs of the surfing community this felt more realistic and I'm pleased to report he was pretty savvy for the most part! Jess was a great co-detective too - their banter was great and she was a rockstar when danger found them. I very much look forward to future novels by this author, hopefully featuring more of Bo and Jess! Highly recommend.

The Lineup was fantastic. For his first published book, Timms did an incredible job weaving a mystery that was as much driven by Bo as it was by the murder. The central mystery was obviously great, but the real heart to the story was Bo’s own journey. I was rooting for him as much in his personal life as I was in the case - also, the Byron surf culture was so fun to read about, it was handled so well.
All in all, a fantastic debut, and I’m excited to see what Timms comes out with next!

Cracking debut novel from Australia's next big author. Gripping tour de force, and does an incredible job painting a story about Byron Bay and it's surf culture. Highly recommend!!

I enjoyed Bo’s story and getting to know him. The character development was great and I feel like this added to the story and made it more enjoyable. The setting is also a character here, the surf is a huge part of Bo’s life but it also takes on a life of its own which also was enjoyable.
