What a great ride! i really enjoyed it and it really feels like a Dungeons and Dragons kind of story! Or when you're a gamer you will probably feel the same feeling of recognition. The "levelling up" , learning new things, dungeons. But don't worry, you don't have to be a gamer or a DnD fan to enjoy this story and the way it is told!

I love how it is focussed on friendship, overcoming hardships together and of course trying to save the world. It really is an "old fashioned" fantasy story! And I mean that in the best way possible. It really feels refreshing and you don't have to be a YA to enjoy this ;)

We still follow our 4 heroes on their journey in a whole new world. I love how more of the underlying story is divulged here; like there is a bigger story here than "we have to kill monsters" and I cannot wait to see where it takes us in the next book.

Sometimes the book leans a bit more towards the telling instead of the showing part, but it didn't bother me that much. Also the beginning is a bit slower than the rest of the book, but stick with it, because it is worth it.

Can't wait for the next book 🤭

Thank you Brady for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC and again, for using my name in this story. 🩷

Oh my nerdy, fantasy loving heart! This book was so great. It's the perfect mix of epic fantasy meets D&D, just like book one. It's like the characters have gained a level and are using it to their advantage with new spells and knowledge, not to mention stronger monsters.
Hunsaker is really good at sprinkling in things for the future without frustrating readers too much. He also adds a dash of romance, mystery, and moments that have you stressed for the characters and their survival with plenty of moments where they're just on fun adventures! Can't wait for book 3, he has definitely left enough breadcrumbs that I'm excited for the next book without feeling like I'm dangling off a cliff and stressed for the characters.

What a wild ride!

Brady likes to advertise these books as having 'D&D vibes', and this one definitely lives up to that promise, as our party of heroes move on to new places, with new adventures and new monsters!

The pacing is great, the stakes are high, and the lore is immaculate *chef's kiss*

Also, there may or may not be a floofy companion in the mix...

Super fun read. Second book with more abilities and powers. It’s more like a 4.25 for me I’d say. Only because I wanted more!! The ending was super ominous! Excited for the next one!

Editing to add, I received an advanced copy from the author, but also purchased my own copy.

What do you mean I have to wait til September for the next one?!

For real, amazing. Loved it! I definitely got about 30-40% of the way through and was like… uhhhh…. Everything I thought would happen has already happened! How do we have so much more book??

Plot twists, giddy feelings, worry for characters safety, all of it. So good. I truly enjoyed the first one, but watching the world grow more complex and learn more about the history? Priceless.

If you love fantasy and monster hunting, these are for you!

Thank you to Brady Hunsaker and his team for allowing me to be part of the ARC readers.

I said it about the first book in the Grimnir Chronicles, and I'll say it again: this is the fantasy series for young teenage boys. That's not to say you won't enjoy it as an adult, you probably will, but if you want to get your 12 year old into fantasy, this is a good place to start. There is action, there are consequences, and there is a semblance of romance, but it never gets to graphic.

We follow our four main characters (Hallik, Bjorn, Elowyn and Lorelai) onto their next adventure, this time on Kelig. Kelig is very different from Askvild, as are it's people. Monsters roam here freely, and humanity is scattered. I won't spoil anything, but it's safe to say we meet a new cast of supporting characters who advance our hero's journey.

Lind and Selke from the previous installment are also back, and play a more important role. And might I smell some romance in their future?

As for pacing and writing style? This book feels like a Dungeons and Dragon's campaign, down to the magic items and the spells learned. Trials cause our heroes to 'level up', and the same 'starting class' can change to different 'subclasses'. If you've ever played an RPG the system is easy to follow. The pacing was not my favorite part of the book, especially in the beginning. It was clear Hunsaker had an idea on where to go, but to get the characters there felt a little off to me.

In the previous book I had some issues with the editing, and the repetition of phrases, but not so in this one. It's much more polished!

Now, there are two reasons why this isn't a five star read for me. First, some things just felt a little too easy, especially at the start of the book. This improved later on, but the opening chapters do set the tone and may make people put the book down. Just know, if this is what bothers you, it's worth reading on.

The second this is the dialogue. To me, this is the weakest part of the book, and I hope it's something that Hunsaker improves at in the next one (which I am sure he will, consedering the leap in quality between this one and the previous one). It felt a little stilted to me, a lot of telling rather than it feeling organic. For some characters, such as Bjorn, this did not bother me to much. But for characters like Lorelai (who was an ambassador and should be good with people) and Elowyn (who is portrayed as quite empathic) it did.

P.S. The art is insanely good!

Avskild has had its world changed. They now know that there are humans in other areas and they now have Voyagers to open portals. Deciding to help Kelig, Bjorn's home, the 4 heroes travel through the portal with others to establish a new city and unite the people there. They also need to cleanse the obelisk associated with the portal so that no more monsters can come through it. While they are in Kelig, they discover there are more trials that can give them extra abilities as Grimnirs and the group must now face those as well.
Hallik, Bjorn, Lorelei and Elowyn are all wonderful characters. They all have distinct personalities but work very well together. Bjorn has always preferred being alone (and we learn why in this book), but now he is coming around to being part of this team. They are definitely a strong unit and have earned the nickname the Pathfinders. In such a relatively short amount of time they have become a well-oiled machine that knows each other's strengths and weaknesses. They are all brave and willing to help all the people in Kelig. We also see Lind rise up to the challenge of leadership in Avskild with Selke as an advisor of sorts.
This is another book packed full of action and monsters. Every time you think they are going to get a minute of rest, there is something new coming after them. Once again, I loved all the different types of monsters. There were some I had heard of but so many new and terrifying monsters. I have not read much from the progressive fantasy genre, but this seems like it fits in with that genre. There is a definite leveling up with a certain way to do that. It will be interesting to see how the characters find the rest of these caves that seem to be testing their strength and to see how they each will fare as well. There were some reveals about the past and the forces that are against the humans and he ending was definitely a big surprise for a couple of characters.

Shadows of Kelig was an excellent follow-up to Depths of Vanalf and a clear improvement in nearly every area. The writing felt tighter, the action scenes were fantastic, the world felt much larger, and the stakes were significantly higher this time around. Brady Hunsaker continues to do a great job balancing lore, mystery, and momentum without ever letting the story feel bogged down.

One of my favorite aspects of this series is following the Pathfinders as they slowly uncover truths about their world. The discovery and exploration elements are incredibly engaging, and it makes the reader feel like they are learning alongside the characters. Every new revelation expands the scope of the story in exciting ways.

The action sequences were another major highlight. Hunsaker writes combat extremely well — the scenes are easy to follow, impactful, and consistently exciting without becoming overly long or repetitive.

I also greatly appreciate how clean the series is compared to much of modern fantasy. The language and sensitive content are handled very well, and this is a series I would feel comfortable recommending to readers of almost any age.

My only real criticism involves one particular subplot surrounding a character wrestling with becoming king. The internal struggle and buildup were compelling, but I was disappointed that the actual “passing of the torch” largely happened off-page. After spending so much time with that arc, I wanted to experience that defining moment directly rather than hear about it afterward.

That said, the ending was excellent. Unlike the first book, which felt fairly self-contained, this one leaves several major hooks for the future of the series. I am fully invested now and cannot wait for Book 3.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, and here is my review: This book is EPIC.

Shadows of Kelig was a beautifully written continuation of our heroes from Depths of Vanalf. If you read book 1, you already know that Hallik and his friends failed to save their world. Now we follow them as they fail to save others! Humanity is doomed and the author has a sick and twisted way of making these heroes suffer! This isn't your typical hero narrative, and I'm here for it.

Some of the characters undergo so much emotion and growth I sometimes forgot I didn't personally know these characters as real people. I was so invested in what happened next, rooting for my favorite characters and placing bets on who wouldn't make it, (Ortso is my favorite, right after Bjorn). Reading this fantasy novel made me want to grab a character sheet and start a D&D campaign. The monsters in this one were FUN!

The universe in which the Grimnir Chronicles take place is so expansive that my mind is reeling with all the possibilities yet to come in book #3. If you haven't read book 1 yet, don't wait. If you have, then you should absolutely be invested in book #2, which I think was even better than book #1!

I almost forgot to mention the ART! This book is filled with absolutely STUNNING character art that is a must see! Even if you use the book as a picture book instead of reading it. (Something to make the book enticing to all ages!) The one from chapter 44 was my favorite.

Just under 5 stars, probably 4.7 or 4.8 for me

Thanks to Brady for giving me an ARC copy to read, I throughly enjoyed this book, having read the first volume in a little over 4 days to enable me to try and finish this one in time for launch day, I am fully emersed in the world of The Grimnir Chronicles, so let me say this, Life is not easy for our band of hero's, but to help that the band is growing, I won't spoil the surprise

Yes this book is written as YA, with very little romance, it's Portal/progression/Lit/RPG fantasy but it's also epic fantasy that I believe most adult readers of fantasy should try and will probably enjoy

I have to admit I was a bit surprised with this story as our heros, Hallik, Loreli, Elowyn and the delightfully named Jaysen Bjorn (you either get it or you don't) seemed to accomplish the main aim of the story by about halfway through the book and I was wondering where things were headed, but Brady manages to keep the suspense and the story going along at a rattling good pace, and it's a nice change that this story is not just a case of the hero's meet the villains (monsters), the hero's beat the villians and move on, there are some real impacts from some of their encounters, with the final one really bringing that aspect right to the fore

I really think book 2 is a serious step forward in both the story telling, and the world building, which is starting to deepen as we go deeper into the history and lore of the world, I am not sure how I will manage to wait until the next volume comes out

Shadows Of Kelig
Brady Hunsaker
5/5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I keep seeing reviews saying these books are for teenage boys, but as a female in her mid twenties I've got to say that these books are for anyone, if this sort of book is what you like then enjoy, and enjoy these books you will!!!

I am the biggest fan of these books and Brady's work. The mix of The Witcher, Beast Quest, Folklore, DnD is incredible! I used to love the beast quest books and I am a HUGE fan of The Witcher, so getting a chance to read where these two worlds are combined as an adult just makes me so happy!

The world building is so in depth, even with the additions of new realms, portals, monsters, characters... The power systems are so unique and refreshing and just when I thought it couldn't get better we were introduced to Kelig. There was so much happening and yet the way it is written is so unbelievably easy to follow (in the best way).
I love how the books end and each time I've questioned where they are heading next, who will they meet, what will they face and I just can't wait, they just leave you desperate for more trials, worlds, monsters, ALL OF IT!
oh, and I can't help but adore Bjorn... my fave character if I do say so myself!

And you best know I'm about to sign up to REAM to get my hands on book 3! 😍

Omg what a read! Aka here we go!

The land of Avskild that we are introduced to in book 1, THE DEPTHS OF VANALF, is not the Avskild we get to know in book 2 (you have to read book 1 for this part to make sense 😉)
The people are strong, and our heroes are ready, or at least they think they are. Brady kinda throws everything, and the kitchen sink at them in this book, but between you and me- that's what makes it so great!

Our formerly rag-tag team whips into shape and rolls with the punches, literally and metaphorically, all while delivering the reader the ultimate D&D immersion in novel form.

Every time I review one of Brady's books, I think this new one is the best yet, and subsequently my favorite! I cannot wait for ya'll to read my new favorite and join me in the Grimnir Chronicles! In the meantime, check out Brady's tagged account and read book 1, if you haven't already!

Shadows of Kelig by Brady Hunsaker

My rating: 5/5
Spice rating: 0/3
Language: clean (in-world cursing only)
Genre: high and epic fantasy
Age rating: YA/ 14+

Book two of the Grimnir Chronicles by Brady Hunsaker, Shadows of Kelig, is a gripping tale and very enjoyable to read. The world-building is well thought through, and with the usual great pacing Hunsaker shows in his novels. This book was both expertly written and exciting to read.

The team enters Kelig through the portal and tries to cleanse it, all the while defending their newest settlement against monsters and finding the surviving people of Kelig. Throughout this book, the team begins to learn more about each other as they work together to defend the world from monsters.

This is a YA high and epic fantasy that is clean and spice-free. Written with no harsh language, and using only in-word curses. I’d recommend this book for ages 14+ (for minor violence and blood).

What an adventure!

The story started off a little slow but once the team began their travels, definitely picked up. I really enjoyed Bjorn’s POV and wished there were more of it. He really is a man shrouded in mystery and I’m sure he’s got tales to tell, being a monster hunter. The ending was super ominous and cliff hanger-y, which creates a great set up for book 3. I also hope there will be more information provided of the other story lines as well, perhaps even having all of them come together towards the end of their journey.

Book is told with multiple POVs, reads a tad formulaic/robotically, and seems to be geared toward a younger audience (author’s intention is to write a story appropriate for all audiences).

Books must be read in order to follow the storyline without being totally lost about why the characters are doing what they’re doing.

I can’t wait for book 3!

I very much enjoyed the first book but this is huge step up in story telling and world building. The action is nonstop and the different monsters really builds the world out more and I'm very excited to see what other parts there are to this world.
I really liked how the characters have grown in this book, not only with learning more about their abilities and evolving but their growth to work as a team and have hope in such a hopeless world.
Overall 4 stars, a big step up (even though I thoroughly enjoyed book 1) and can't wait for book 3 with that little teaser at the end!!

Thank you to the Author Brady Hunsaker for the ARC review.

I enjoyed the second book in the series even more than the first one. We get to see the main characters and some supporting characters, as they explore new worlds. The characters work well together and they have distinctive voices. You get to see them learn and grow with their challenges. The pacing is fast and will keep you glued to the page.
There is a little too much telling and too little showing in the book, for my personal liking. The dialouge feels a little clunky at times.
The chapter art and in chapter art is beautiful.
I cannot wait to see what the characters get to explore in book 3 of the series.

I recived an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Amazing. This is leading up to be a God Tier, Epic Fantasy, can't get enough of series. More trials. More magic. More monsters. More battles. We see the start of new leadership and how each corner of this world could be the reason why they survive. Each POV is intricately woven together to provide a smooth progression that keeps you invested in the survival of this world.

Not to mention, the beauty that is the cover art of this series. A perfect addition to any fantasy shelf. I can't wait for the next one.

This was such an awesome read! I love the pacing and the progression and most of all, the Dungeons and Dragons feel of the story! I need a magic portal to open up and take me to this world. This is perfect for readers who want a fast paced DnD feel to the story and I know this would get younger readers into fantasy. I truly can’t wait for the next installment!

I received an ARC of this book. Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left us.

If you’ve wondered what would happen when the realm of men becomes a monsters play ground here you go. This story follows several characters as they navigate earning magic to enhance their chances of survival. The trick is learning how to use your abilities while fighting for your life.

Now to wait for book 3…

I received an ARC copy of Shadows of Kelig, and Book 2 definitely raises the stakes as we rejoin the original team on a new adventure.

I loved getting to explore more of the world, dive into Jaysen Bjorn’s home and past, and, of course, see the characters continue to grow and evolve.

Brady never disappoints me, and this one was no different.

Another 5-star read from me!
