A dark, gritty romantic suspense about a morally gray vigilante and the editor who becomes his obsession.
Cassius Ashenheart isn’t looking for redemption. In this dark crime romance, he’s the man people call when justice fails—a weapon forged by blood, betrayal, and the weight of his family’s sins. His world is all brotherhood, violence, and brutal secrets. Love doesn’t fit in a life built on quiet retribution.
Melinda Westbrook edits fictional killers for a living. Real danger stays safely on the page—until a wrong-number text pulls a stranger into her inbox and a terrifying encounter forces that stranger to step in and pretend to be her husband.
Cassius should walk away. Instead, one act of protection turns into late-night messages, a dangerous bond, and a marriage of protection that blurs the line between safety and obsession.
The more Cassius shields Melinda from the monsters in his world, the more he wants to keep her—close, claimed, and completely his. But when the threat circling her is tied to his own bloody past, Cassius has to decide what he’s willing to
His brothers. His code. Or the woman who makes the killer in him feel almost human.
Heart of a Killer is perfect for readers who
Dark romance and gritty romantic suspense
A morally gray, protective, possessive antihero
Wrong-number romance that spirals into obsession
Marriage of convenience/marriage of protection
Found family and brotherhood in a violent world
Spice with high emotional stakes and raw, brutal feelings
This is romance for the ones who’ve been through hell—the wounded, the wild, and the ones who stay.
If you’re searching for a dark romance with a vigilante hero who’ll put his blade between you and the world, Heart of a Killer belongs on your shelf.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and was over the moon for an advanced reader copy. The story is gripping and captivating from the start. We have Cassius, also known as the Machine, who lives in a violent world and has accepted that killing is part of who he is. Then we have Melinda, aka Lindy, who is just an ordinary woman, an editor, who moved to start a new life for herself. Then one accidental message pulls her into his world. Their relationship grows under pressure, shaped by fear, protection and hard truths rather than instant feelings.
The pacing is good, the tension builds naturally and the relationship develops in a way that kept me pulled in. There’s fear, hesitation, protectiveness and moments where you can tell both of them are fighting what they feel because it might cost them everything. I liked that the story focused just as much on trust and survival as it did on romance.
Shalana Battles writes in a way that makes you feel, your chest tightens, your heart races and you find yourself thinking about the characters even when you’ve put the book down. It’s a well-written dark romance with strong characters and a gripping plot. I stayed engaged the whole time and I’m officially invested in this series. Highly recommend if you enjoy intense, emotional, morally gray darker love stories with heart and substance.
I was so excited for my first ARC read of Heart of a Killer! This book took off right off the bat and didn't slow down. With a morally gray MMC and a quiet, shy book editor, underground organizations, mafia and MC clubs, the touch-her-and-die vibes set in Vegas with some paranormal aspects, it's a high stakes read that will leave you ready for the next book in the series!
chapter 18 was by far my favorite. the movie that played in my head from the detail was pure moody magic 🤌 Cassian and Melinda were two completely different people. different words. different eyes. that street lamp knew it a moth to a flame but neither knew they were chasing shadows. I DEVOURED this book. absolutely loved every second. the details. the way Shalana captures you and sinks you the ship. you couldn't survive if you tried. I cannot wait for more from this world. I need to know what happens next. I need to see the figher rise from the ashes of the old Melinda. Lindy has her fire now and that black widow won't see her coming. Cassian will be the blade but I have no doubt shes going to wield it. deliver the Severed head on waiting platters and rise to the top with her new found family.
This was my first book by Shalana Battles, and I was over the moon to receive an ARC. Especially after how quickly this story pulled me in. Heart of a Killer is gripping right from the start and never really lets you breathe.
Cassius Ashenheart, also known as the Machine, lives in a world of violence and quiet retribution. He’s accepted that killing is part of who he is. Melinda (Lindy) is his opposite: a reserved, thoughtful book editor who’s trying to rebuild her life after leaving her past behind. One wrong number text is all it takes to collide their worlds; and from there, nothing feels safe again.
What really worked for me was how the relationship developed under pressure. This isn’t insta-love. It’s built through fear, protection, trust, and survival. You can feel both characters fighting what they’re drawn to, knowing that giving in could cost them everything. The pacing is solid, the tension builds naturally, and the romance never overshadows the very real danger surrounding them.
Shalana Battles writes in a way that makes you feel. Your chest tightens. Your heart races. And even after you put the book down, the characters stay with you. The story balances dark romance and romantic suspense beautifully, focusing just as much on emotional stakes and trust as it does on attraction.
With underground organizations, morally gray choices, found family, and serious touch her and die energy set in Vegas (with some intriguing paranormal elements), this book kept me fully engaged. I’m officially invested in this series and can’t wait to see where it goes next.
Highly recommend for readers who love intense, emotional, morally gray dark romances with heart and substance.
“He doesn’t make me strong. He reminds me I am.”
Thank you so much to Shalana Battles for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. 🖤

I received an eArc in exchange for my honest review. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
Triggers for mentions of trafficking, and murder. This is definitely a darker book. It also contains mental health representation.
*Ends on a cliffhanger of sorts*
“Say it,” she whispers against my mouth. “You’re mine,” I answer, and feel her smile wrecked and holy against my lips. “Only mine.” “And?” She brushes open-mouthed kisses up my jaw and behind my ear. “And,” I take a half step back so I can look her in the eyes. “I’m yours. Only ever yours.”
It started with a wrong text and turned into more.
Cassius is The Machine. A cold blooded killer. He spots a woman under a street light and is immediately drawn to her in the glow.
Melinda is just a woman new to Vegas trying to find her footing and confidence. She tries to cancel a date and texts The Machine's burner phone. Melinda can also see ghosts. Some of which are victims of Cassius.
In Cassius’s world, black and white makes sense. His hands end lives. Black and white lets him sleep. It lets me justify his choices. In his world, he is a bad man who does bad things for the right reasons. That's the lie we both tell. We live in the gray. He wears it like armor; I breathe it like air. I see the ghosts, but he creates them. -Melinda, chapter 22
He knows he should stay away but his attraction is too much. He also doesn't tolerate men messing with what is his. He is possessive...she is somewhat naive.
This love story is one of angst and suspense. If you're looking for twists and turns, some spice, and plot, this is the read for you.
Shalana Battles was an author that until this book landed on my email I hadn't heard of. But after reading heart of a killer, I can say that I will 100% read anything that she writes and heart of a killer. 5 out of 5 ⭐ 2 out of 5 🌶️ You will find amazing character development, a story that pulls you in and captivates you. Our book girl who sees ghost, a man who knows no boundaries when it comes to protecting her. An alliance between men who all have one goal in mind.. protect the women and children. And the ability to write 10 more books easily in this book world. The spice is nice and isn't overpowering. This could easily be your entry into Dark Romance or a suggestion to a friend or book club who may want to try it. Cassius Ashenhart is the man who will protect you at all cost, even if that means a bodyguard hacking your entire life and putting cameras everywhere. I cannot recommend this book to you enough. You should definitely pick it up on January 20th. 2026 Shalana definitely hit this out of the park and I have read a lot of books this book is one that I know I will read as soon as I get it in physical copy even though I've already read it digitally. it is a book that I put so many bookmarks in it that when I finally get the physical copy notations that I will put in this book are going to be perfect.

A Gripping, High-Stakes Descent into Devotion From the very first chapter, Shalana Battles pulls you into a dark, gritty world that is both raw and addictive. This isn't just a romance; it’s a high-stakes story of survival and trust built under extreme pressure. The dynamic between Cassius "The Machine" and Melinda is the heart of the book. Cassius is the quintessential morally gray antihero—fierce, loyal, and devastatingly protective. His obsession is rooted in his attentiveness to Melinda’s smallest details, making his devotion feel visceral and real. Melinda is equally compelling; as a book editor thrust into a violent world, she remains refreshingly grounded and honest even as her life is upended. The pacing is excellent, allowing the tension to build naturally. Battles writes with an intensity that makes your chest tighten, focusing as much on the "found family" brotherhood as the romance. Their connection feels earned because it is shaped by hard truths and shared danger rather than instant feelings. If you enjoy a hero who would burn the world down for the woman he loves, this is a must-read. It is a well-written, emotionally charged dark romance with deep characters and a plot that doesn't let go. I am officially invested in the Ashenheart Series.
Heart of a Killer kinda gives off Haunting Adeline vibes at first until the story unfolds. It follows Cassius and Melinda aka Lindy along with Cassius brothers to unfold kid/women trafficking ring called Spiderweb. Cassius is a killer who falls in love with Melinda but is torn between keeping her away from spiderweb but unable to keep her away from him. Cassius is a regular booktok boyfriend, handsome, obsessive, stalkerish, psycho especially when it comes to Lindy or his brothers. This first book has it all, drama, love darkness but intriguing. I am definitely looking forward to a book 2 following more of spiderweb story and also looking forward to seeing if any of Cassius brothers have love interest since it gives off hints that Sava might be involved or was involved with one of the brothers. From what I read we definitely haven’t seen the last of the Ashenhearts. Such a great read, I have already recommended this book to a few of my close friends when it gets released to the public!!
Thank you Shalana for picking me as one of the few selected to exclusively read Heart of a Killer before its release on January 20th 2026!

This book had me hooked…. It was a slow burn yet intense dark mafia romance that I never wanted to put down. I usually don’t like slow burns but it worked so well for this storyline I didn’t mind and can say I can’t picture it any other way I genuinely think it would take away from the story and characters other wise. Cassius is protective to the point that he fights his feelings because he doesn’t want to destroy her with his world and Melinda fights her feelings afraid of what could happen as well. However, when they finally give in to fate the intense and raw emotions are beautifully written and described by Shalana. This book has spice so if you don’t like it this may not be for you, be aware of your triggers, but this isn’t overwhelming spicy and adds nicely to the storyline. Overall this book was beautifully written and I’m so excited to be able to be apart of the ARC read, however bought a copy as well; and am anxiously waiting the next to come in this series
Fav quote from the book: “I don’t answer to anyone.” I slide my palm to the nape of her neck. “Except you. I’ll fight the world and bow at your feet.” - Cassius

This was a great read. Dark, gritty, and emotionally charged in all the right ways. Cassius Ashenheart is everything I love in a morally gray antihero; fierce, loyal, and devastatingly protective. His obsession with Melinda isn’t just possessive, it’s attentive. He notices everything about her, down to the smallest details, including her OCD counting, and that level of awareness made his devotion feel intense and real. Melinda is incredibly relatable and refreshingly honest with herself. She goes through massive, life-altering changes in such a short time, yet she never loses her strength. Watching her adapt, endure, and still remain grounded made her easy to connect with and root for. The bond between Cassius and Melinda grows naturally. The found family, brotherhood, and violence-laced world only raise the stakes, making their relationship feel earned and dangerous in the best way. Dark romance lovers who enjoy obsession, protection, and a hero who would burn the world down for the woman he loves, this one is worth your time.
This book took a minute to fully sink its claws into me, but looking back, the slower beginning was necessary for the story to grow the way it did. Once the foundation was set, the tension steadily climbed and I found myself fully locked in. The suspense had me genuinely anxious in the best way. Every moment felt heavy with anticipation, and the emotional stakes kept rising as the story unfolded. Cassius’s protective nature toward Melinda had me gasping for air more than once…intense, consuming, and impossible to ignore. While this isn’t an over the top spicy read, the intimate moments were done beautifully. The chemistry felt intentional and meaningful, proving that spice doesn’t have to be overwhelming to be powerful. It added depth without overshadowing the story. This is a Dark Mafia Romance with suspense. If you like a morally gray hero, vigilante justice, found family, obsession, and a marriage of protection then you will love Heart of A Killer. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
As a single mom, reading is my escape—my quiet moment when the house finally slows down. This book grabbed me and gave me exactly that. From the first chapters, it pulled me into a dark, intense world that felt heavy, emotional, and raw in a way that kept me hooked.
What really worked for me was the depth beneath the darkness. Yes, there’s violence and morally gray characters, but there’s also pain, survival, and that feeling of being shaped by the things you’ve lived through. The romance isn’t soft or easy—it’s complicated, messy, and intense, which made it feel real instead of forced.
I found myself reading late at night when I should’ve been sleeping, just needing one more chapter. This was the kind of book that let my brain shut off from real life for a bit, and honestly, that’s priceless.
If you like dark romance with depth, broken characters, and a story that pulls you in and doesn’t let go, this one’s worth your time. I’ll definitely be continuing the series.
I’m completely and totally obsessed with this book and these characters. I was entranced from the start and only became more captivated the more I read. Melinda, aka Lindy girl, is an on point depiction of obsessive behaviors in life. The serendipitous start to their “relationship” is unique and not something I’ve read before. Cassius makes her feel safe and protected from the start, allowing her to open up to him. He’s immediately obsessed with her, going to intense lengths to keep her safe.
This book has it all honestly. Good pace. Great characters and character development. Wonderful world building. The story is full of fear, protectiveness, concern, obsession, and intensity. Shalana doesn’t just focus on the romance. Trust is earned and built. The reader feels like we are walking through it with the characters. This book will grab you by the nape of the neck and have you panting for more.
Book 1 in the Ashenheaert Series! I was extremely excited to receive the Early copy for this book and author! Shalana brings us into a quick paced and dark rooted story! Our MMC Cassius is broody for sure. Our FMC Melinda is a BOOK EDITOR for goodness sake!! What a trip for sure ;) Melinda wants to be truly herself without needing to apologize for it! She gets brought into Cassius' world on accident.. But is it something that she truly wants to get out of or is she going to stay.. He has brothers which we know are next in the series and we can not wait to read more from their stories too! The spice is tasteful and yummy which we love! I cant wait to keep going with this series!! Thank you for the opportunity to early read this! Great job and I would SOO recommend everyone jump into this!
It all starts with a text sent to the wrong number—and sparks fly from there.
Melinda, an editor looking to start fresh, has just transferred to Las Vegas, hoping a new city will help her rebuild her life. What she doesn’t expect is to tumble into the orbit of Cassius, the family’s ruthless enforcer whose life is built on danger, loyalty, and secrets.
The attraction between them is instant and electric. Their connection leaps off the page—from playful banter to intense chemistry. As Melinda tries to find her footing in a new city, Cassius becomes both temptation and trouble wrapped in one irresistible package.
This romance blends chance connection, danger, and fate beautifully. Readers who love wrong-number meet-cutes with a darker edge will adore watching these two collide, clash, and spark.
A quick, engaging read that hooks you right from that very first text. ✨
4⭐️ This was a great read with a lot of plot building at the beginning and perfect pick up around mid way through. Our leads are brought together by an accidental text turned obsession . Cassius is our ruthless enforcer in this mafia-ish kinda dynamic and our girl Melinda is a book editor caught up in a life that may be a bit much for her . Their love and chemistry is not sweet and romantic , it’s chaotic and real. Gripping you and dragging you in , so you keep begging for more.
Cassius is broody , grumpy and morally questionable . Melinda is trying to live in her truth and grow a back bone without apologizing for it . This man gives us touch her and die vibes , with a hint of stalker tendencies and I was all in for it . Absolutely worth the read and I can’t wait to read about his brothers !
This is the first of Shalana’s books I’ve read, and I’ll definitely be reading more.
The story captivated me from the beginning, and I felt fully immersed by the end of the first chapter. The plot felt raw and realistic, especially the chemistry they share.
The FMC, Melinda, is relatable and learning to stand on her own two feet. She, like many women, is beginning to navigate life on her own terms and without apology. The more you read, the more you realize just how fierce she is.
Cassius, the MMC, isn’t your typical morally gray mafia character. While he has his harsh edges, his feelings toward his family and Melinda have real depth. Melinda brings out a side of Cassius that even surprises him, and the banter between him and his brothers is next level.
Shalana did a great job balancing the romance and the storyline. I highly recommend this to readers who love dark romance.
This book is nothing but a whirlwind of action. It has a number of tropes that are on my favorites list, including morally black, stalker, he falls first, and touch her and... This makes the book a lot of fun in some questionable ways. The writing style is a little different than most books, almost a little staccato like when you're mentally working through something. It didn't take long to adjust to and then I found I liked it. The POV pings between Cassius and Melinda who couldn't be more different. She's a quiet editor with some OCD issues and he is an enforcer with no conscience beyond her. But as the book goes on, I love the way they kept finding their way back together despite all the things trying to tear them apart. I can't wait for the next book; this is an author I am definitely following.
OMG talk about Obsession!!!!! Im so here for it you have the quiet book editor who just wants to be brave, to be seen, and to take up space without feeling bad. You have the man they call the Machine who follows rules and doesnt stray from his plan till her. One text alters their fate far more than either of them could imagine. As they get to know each other she learns that he has secrets but is surprisingly open about it with her, so is she except one thing that could derail it all when one name is spoken that rattles him. This book will suck you in from the first page. The spice, the characters and did mention that he has 3 brothers too. This book will leave you wanting more and I cant wait to see what happens next.
The story follows a brooding, blade wielding assassin (the “killer” of the title) torn between his strict code, loyalty to his brothers, and an unexpected connection to a woman who softens his hardened heart. It explores themes of redemption, moral conflict, and intense attraction amid violence and danger.
Battles delivers steamy tension, emotional depth, and a gritty, character driven plot that appeals to fans of dark romance with anti hero leads. Readers praise the flawed protagonists, found family vibes, and the way it balances high stakes action with heartfelt moments, though some note it’s heavy on romance tropes.
It’s a solid debut in the series perfect for those who enjoy passionate, morally gray heroes and stories where love challenges a killer’s world.
I love getting to be an ARC reader for these books! You ever pick up a book and know you need it for the vibes! This is one that makes you kick your toes and giggle because let’s face it the touch her and die trope just makes your heart giddy. Especially when the MMC doesn’t just give the eyes for it but has the follow through. I love that our MFC isn’t some weak push over that needs coddled either, I mean she goes weak in the knees for her man, but has a backbone when the times get tough. I love a good slow burn but not so slow you want to throw the book across the room and set it on fire to finally see something actually happen and this book delivered with the perfect timing! Everything was wrapped together with the perfect amount of blood, love, and our Lindy girl!
Lindy-Girl and Cassius are such a heartbreakingly life goal couple(as if these book men could actually exist). I have never really been into Mob-style romances before, but after this book I might have to change my stance on that subject. Halfway through the book you think it felt like it was gonna be over but you look how many pages you have left and think what else can happen and then BAM, it hits the fans!!! My heart hurt for Cassius and what he grew up with but it made him HIM. Melinda blossomed from the sweet shy girl to full boo-tay by the end!!! Oh how she kept Cass calm on that major action was hero worthy!!!! I am dying for book 2 and have an idea on the FMC & MMC might be……..
Imagine being plagued with a 6th sense that leaves you anxious, isolated, and constantly questioning reality. Then, THEN it becomes completely interwoven into your very new, VERY INTENSE love life! I swear, parts of this book had me counting to 7 and re folding corners until they were perfectly aligned. I LOVED everything about Cassius; yes, even the violent parts. This is a man with a purpose. I also would like to take a moment to appreciate how our Lindy girl was moving mountains to overcome her fears. I loved this book from start to finish. I cannot wait for the rest of the Ashenheart series. I have so many questions and theories!!

Loved the way the pacing is in this book. The tension builds naturally and the relationship develops in a way that kept me pulled into the book and wanting to read more. This is a great dark romance that is well written with an awesome plot and characters that were so well thought out. What I really enjoyed was the depth beneath the darkness. Loved the violence and morally gray characters, but there's also pain and survival.
Shalane Battles did an excellent job and was so glad that I got to read her book.
I received this wonderful book as an ARC and am honored to leave my review.
Firstly, I thought there would me more spice in this book. I must admit, I'm so happy there wasn't, it would have taken away for this wonderfully written book. A tale of found family, obsessive love, true acceptance, and devotion like you've never seen. Our MMC Cassius only wanting to see the FMC Melinda thrive. His attention to detail is astounding (what do we expect from a killer, lol). The family dynamic is pretty intense as well. And all to right wrongs in the past. Great read, can not wait for more
Cassian and Melinda are so realistic that they jump off the pages for me. I can see what they see because this story is so well written! The first time I read it I was wrecked! I had to read this again to leave this review so for me this is that good. Love the interaction between Cassian and his brothers as well.
I am stopping here so I don’t give anything away! Read it and see for yourself. If you like dark romance and mafia you will love this!
I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book,. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review
Thank you Shalana for the advanced copy! I loveeed Heart of a Killer (book 1 of the Ashenheart series). Cassius is so unwell and we love him for it.
Melinda is fleeing her past life and starting over in Las Vegas when an accidental text message brings her into the Ashenheart World. I love all of the Ashenheart brothers and I can’t wait to see how all the series unfolds.
ARC READ 4/5 for me. I loved the beginning of this book, and literally read 60% almost in one go. I loved how quickly the story was set and how you could feel the danger lurk from the shadows. However, I have felt the story slow down after that, and struggled to read the last 5 chapters. I will absolutely read the following books because I need to know what happens next and I do recommend this book to anyone who’d like to softly start their journey into dark romance
This was my first book to read a book by this wonderful author and I am hooked on her!! And I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed this book. Last year I got into dark romance and I also love finding new books so I was so excited when I found out about this book. I’m currently working on second read through it and it still hits the same as the first time. I highly recommend this book. It was so hard to put down.
I could barely put this book down, and if it wasn’t for making sure my family was fed, I probably wouldn’t have. I absolutely loved how different Melinda and Cassius were from one another and how they ended up being exactly what the other one needed.
Heart of a Killer is the perfect blend of dark romance, mafia, he falls first, wrong number, and found family. I’m so glad this is a book 1, because I need so much more!!
