it was an interesting book! it's obviously really short and a quick read, even for a slow-ish reader like me. that being said, this felt a lot more like a zero draft or detailed outline rather than a book. nothing was written in-scene, and there was no meaningful internalization whatsoever. because of that, really emotional moments never landed with me--i didn't ever know why i should care. i never felt fully ingratiated in the world, nor did i ever feel like i got to know the characters. tragedy wasn't tragic. betrayal wasn't devastating. everything sorta just happened. i just couldn't get over all of the potential. literally every moment felt like it could be magnified into something amazing. in many ways, it felt like a video game. my dragon quest nostalgia did get to me here, for one. but the strength of the work as it existed itself just wasn't quite there for me, and there were some stark moments of technical errors (e.g., stella being written as "stellar" at least once, and so forth), and some other oddities (like the "White Champion," which couldn't feel like it wasn't said with some racial undertones, especially with the notable enemies being labeled as capital-b Black--meant to signify darkness, I'm sure, but it was extremely clumsy and uncomfortable). this is the great start of something, and I do wonder if a younger version of myself--who was a lot more forgiving with books and when they necessitated the full wilds of my imagination--would have been entertained by it. there are certainly readers for a book like this, even if it wasn't me.
