All-star creators Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora deliver the next pulse-pounding chapter of Batman’s journey during DC K.O., giving us the Dark Knight’s greatest challenge yet. Jason Todd is Batman. Tim Drake is Batman. And to complete his mission, Bruce Wayne will have to fight both of them. The former Robins aren’t giving up without a fight, and it will take everything Batman has—and then some—in order to defeat them. Does Batman have what it takes to defeat both of his pupils, or have the students become the masters?
Knightfight has really grown into something unique and special for me. When I first started this mini series, I knew it would probably be hit or miss for a lot of readers, but for me it’s been a big hit. It’s just pure fun, and I really love how it connects to DC K.O.
After everything wild that’s happened so far, one thing I somehow still did not expect was the Heart of Apokolips offering Bruce another chance to enter the ring and help his allies. Of course, there’s a catch. Bruce has to play by the Heart’s rules, and if you know Batman at all, you know that is NOT going to work for him.
The conclusion to Jason Todd’s story really stood out to me as well. Bruce choosing to stay with Jason so he wouldn’t be alone, and promising to find a way out of Gotham together, felt incredibly powerful. Considering everything Jason has been through and the mindset he lives in, that moment felt deeply meaningful and showed real growth in Bruce’s relationship with him.
My one major complaint with this mini series is what they did with Tim Drake. We really need to come back to his story. Tim has quickly become one of my favorite Robins, and I loved seeing this alternate version of him as Batman. He truly embodied the title of world’s greatest detective, and I hope we get closure on the final case he was investigating. Spending more time exploring Bruce and Tim’s relationship would have added so many layers to this series. I’m really hoping they have plans to revisit him in the final issue. I have a feeling that might be the case though, fingers crossed!
Other than that, this issue was an absolute wild ride. Damian Wayne gets a lot of criticism, but I personally enjoy most adaptations of the character. Seeing Bruce meet an older version of his own son, while realizing that Damian is aware of the false reality they’re trapped in, was CRAZY. It makes it clear that the stakes heading into the final issue are higher than ever. What will Bruce have to sacrifice to return to the fight? Something within himself, or someone he loves? I genuinely cannot wait to find out!!
And that final page was incredibly heartfelt.. I won’t spoil anything, but come on, I need more of this reality with an older Damian, even if it isn’t real. It was just so sweet.
This is writing that exemplifies a deep understanding of the characters. I love this version of Tim (Bernard mention had me feral) and of Damian. I talked about my hopes for Damian in this series at NYCC with Joshua Williamson last year, because it’s no secret his work with the character is some of my favorite in all of comics. I look forward to expressing my satisfaction with it next time I get the chance to meet him! As a Batgirl girlie you know I wish we could’ve seen more of those scenarios where the girls became Batman, but it was also cool to see Azrael here.
Really creative stuff here. Bruce is dealing with the challenges in his own way and the Heart is getting frustrated. The stakes are high for Bruce and I love the way he is dealing with things. The final pages present a challenge that should be a great way to wrap up this fun mini-series.
WHAT?! OMG WHAT?! HUH?! WHAT?! How many times can I say that to stop freaking out because omg that was so good. Mora’s art and Farrell’s colors remain ON TOP but Williamson has really pulled me into this issue as fighting the heart of Apokolips batman has finally conquered one of the real problems that has inconsistently plagued him across writers: forming emotional attachments and bonding with his children. As batman was stuck in the isolated Gotham ran by Jason Todd batman who fully believed he was a delusional clayface disguised as Bruce…batman finally realized that this world is what you make it based on perception. And if Jason thinks he is really clayface and if he even starts to believe it…then it may be true and batman was able to legit turn into clayface to fight Jason! Of course this use exactly what the heart of Apokolips wants. But as Jason fell to his death from a rooftop, Bruce used the clayface powers to drag him right back up and save his life. This stunned Jason, and as Bruce transforms back to his true form in front of him he admits that he always considered himself a loner…but that was a lie, he was never really alone as he was surrounded by Jason and his brothers and sisters who constantly supported himself. He tells Jason that he doesn’t have to believe he is Bruce or Basil but he is putting his foot down, refusing to leave Jason alone, and staying here to help Jason rebuild this world together. This stuns Jason”…together?” There is a sudden moment where the two of them are like father and son working together again…and the heart of Apokolips can’t stand it. Bruce having an emotional connection with Jason literally broke the world as the heart claimed he cheated by working with Jason and helping him instead of fighting him.
As the heart dragged batman back into the darkness of creation, batman exclaimed that he is done playing this game and he refuses to fight his children. The heart then attempts to get to batman by showing him the current status of the tournament…and how joker is winning. So now the heart wants to make a new offer. If batman beats its challenge it will return him to the tournament. Batman has no reason to trust it and doesn’t have much of a choice, but the heart promises that things will only get harder from here and will not test him physically…but test his mind and heart.
We then find ourselves in a different Gotham as a batman with a sleek blue and yellow look who is clearly Tim is finishing a real life game of clue, fully setup with the guests with names based around colors, lol. He solved the case and revealed the true killer without issue, all while using super high tech gadgets and holograms to take the assailant down for good…just like every other crime in Gotham, he has solved it. But there is one case that continues to haunt Tim, the case he could never solve…Bruce’s death. As he returns to the cave he gets a victory call from Steph and Cass who just defeated owlwoman and hopes he can join the to celebrate. But he has started to become a bit more of a loner in that big cave, but he suddenly hangs up as he notices a new problem…a code displayed across the bat computer screen in binary as someone tried to hack in. He doesn’t need to translate it and is immediately able to read the message as Bruce asking him for help. Tim doesn’t like it and immediately attempts to track the hacker and get them out of his system. But he almost doesn’t notice that the hack has gotten inside the giant bat mech suits behind him that are currently moving towards him. He suddenly lunges up and starts to take down each one using his high tech gadgets. But as he is each suit is trying to communicate with him, asking him to wait and listen and that it’s really Bruce, but not his Bruce, trying to talk to him. Tim is convinced it’s just a rogue program or virus but then Bruce starts to unload personal details. How Tim broke into the batcave when he was 14 and how he used to dream of his father’s death. This stops Tim cold, no one else knew about that and suddenly a hologram is coming to life in front of him of our batman, who just needed a moment to gain access to that part of the system. Batman explains that he has been trapped in the system for a few days and it too him a moment to gain control but he has been able to look through the files to get to know this Tim and he could not be prouder. He dedicated himself to solving not only crime in Gotham…but Gotham itself and Bruce is at such an emotionally healthy point he is fully willing to admit that his children have become better than he ever was. But Tim can’t help but lash out at this, if he is so great why couldn’t he solve Bruce’s murder…and Bruce explains because he didn’t want to. He has all the clues and the answers but he couldn’t bring himself to solve it because then Bruce would really be dead. Tim admits that’s not exactly true, he just wished he could solve one more case with him. Bruce says they can, he has the same access to the files Tim does and as he projects them he points out a key detail that cracks the entire case open…something is missing from his belt. Suddenly it all clicks, Tim knows who killed Bruce and now they can go and catch them together. Tim would love that, but the heart of Apokolips sure has hell doesn’t as once again Bruce has solved the task without fighting but through the power of love and understanding and for that Bruce was ripped back into nothing.
The heart is sick of it, it suddenly flashes in front of him tons of different versions of batmen and batwomen who have taken his mantle from his family who would gladly kill him. We see a version of Steph, Duke, Jace, Azrael, Cass, and Barbara but the heart has a different idea in mind. Suddenly Bruce wakes up much older in a bed. But instead of a silent world like he found with Jason…the Gotham around him is alive. He is actually sitting in a nice apartment overlooking crime alley, and it’s bright and nice and suddenly we find out why as an older Damian walks in…he saved Gotham an was able to do it based on what Bruce taught him and following his own path after that. Gotham doesn’t need a batman anymore. Bruce is stunned by an older Damian and wants to try to explain the situation they are in…but Damian knows. The creator of his world made him too smart, he can see the cracks in reality and he understands this is all part of a cosmic contest to manipulate Bruce. Bruce asks if he can help him escape, and Damian can do that…but first he wants Bruce to understand the stakes for this world, as temporary as it may be, as Damian brings in his son and Bruce’s grandson…little Alfred. I absolutely cackled when I saw the tagline for the next issue is “Batman versus…happiness?” What an insane drop of manipulation, making Damian smart enough to know his world is fake but also giving him a child we all know he won’t give up without a fight. Oh I have the heart of Apokolips so much.

This issue felt very different from the previous entries in the series. The first two issues leaned heavily into action, with Batman physically battling his Robins as they were their own versions of him. In this issue, however, Bruce attempts to “cheat” and defeat the Heart of Apokalypse through conversation and emotional connection rather than fighting. He tries to relate to his Robins instead of overpowering them. This shift felt a bit odd, especially since Bruce fully embraces fighting as Clayface at the end of the previous issue, only for that development to be brushed aside very quickly here. While I was not the biggest fan of how abruptly that was dropped, I did appreciate the new direction the story took. Batman is more than just a fighter. He is brilliant, cunning, and an exceptional detective, so seeing him rely on his intelligence instead of his fists was refreshing. It was also nice to see him genuinely talk to and connect with the men he considers his sons. The Tim Drake–Batman segment was a highlight, as it strongly emphasized detective work from both characters. This aspect of Batman often gets pushed aside, so its inclusion here was welcome. Overall, this was an enjoyable issue, though it felt like a sharp left turn from where the story seemed to be heading in the previous chapter. The Damian Wayne moment at the end is intriguing, but I will need to see where it leads. I do recommend this issue. Grade: B
I absolutely love this Tim Drake Batman! He's like a character right out of Clue. Love the sci-fi/neo-noir hybrid aesthetic. It's a shame we get less than a full issue with this version of Tim because he seems so fun. I could read a whole series about this guy!
I also really like that in this issue Batman decides he's not going to solve his problems by fighting, and as a result the Heart of Apokolips decides to test his mind and heart. I can already tell you that I think the final issue of this comic will be testing my heart...
Also the last page of this comic had me screaming.

I like how this is tying back into the KO tournament, though now I have more questions about this entity behind the tournament. It seems to have a personality and a bigger, devious plan. Tim’s Gotham kind of gets short shrift but the book’s thought experiments about how the different Robins would handle Gotham remain fun and interesting.
I'm probably the only person who saw a single frame of a hypothetical Azrael-Batman, and wish I could have an entire issue just about him. But, instead, this issue only made a passing reference to other hypothetical "Batmen" that Bruce could face in simulations. Glad that Tim got more time than the others, at least.
HIS NAME IS ALFRED??!?!!! *currently crashing out with tears streaming down my face*
Knightfight keeps getting better and better. And therefore angstier in all the right places. Bruce basically “dying” for this version of Tim Drake TWICE?!? MY HEART CANNOT TAKE IT.
DAN MORA YOU ARE DOING THE DAMN THING. BLESS YOU.

Another amazing issue in what is possibly my favorite comic event tie in series to date. Joshua Williamson crafts a heartfelt and endlessly interesting story while Dan Mora and team give us breathtaking artwork on each page. A must read for Bat Family and Elseworlds fans!
i’m actually real enjoying this series. it’s so emotional vulnerable while still retaining batman. i’m very impressed and surprised. I must know if this writer is always like this, or just this run because of the topic and themes that it allows for the more human side to be integrated.
I enjoyed the lack of fighting here. Too often Batman just punches his way out of trouble. In addition, I’m curious about the mystery. Who killed Bruce and why couldn’t Tim solve that crime?
Another incredible issue of Knightfight. The storyline keeps getting better. Excellent artwork and character development. A Batman for all occasions and reality.
A really good psychological thriller. Loving every page. Really tugging on the heart strings. Bruce Wayne is the GOAT! Can't wait to buy this is in hardcover format.
