Mountain Men have chosen solitude in the rugged wilderness for their own reasons. When devastation rips through their lives, their sorrows are like Echoes of Thunder throughout the mountains.
Kendrick’s Anguish Kendrick was grief-stricken after losing the love of his life. His grief turned to rage when he learned he was being threatened by someone trying to take his daughter away from him.
Mountain folk, always wary of strangers, didn't like anyone attempting to 'civilize' them. None of them wanted change. City folks were unwelcome and not trusted. Living with the threat of losing his daughter was proof of them being untrustworthy. Kendrick was now more suspicious of newcomers, and several had moved close by, keeping him watchful at all times.
While still overcome with grief and now fighting the biggest battle of his life, he didn’t have patience for these strangers and their silly notions, nor the time to help them through a rough mountain winter. They weren’t his concern, but the unspoken code of the mountains demanded looking out for your neighbor.
He knew he was heading for trouble the first time he accidentally offered help.
Lynne Lanning has such an effortless way of evoking emotion from her readers. Her characters are so realistic that the reader can feel their pain during trials and their joy during triumphs. Reviews state: "...it's as if Mrs. Lanning lived through this herself." "Couldn't put it down..." "A real page turner." Lynne enjoys turning history and her love of God into enjoyable, relatable stories with practical life lessons that can benefit people today. Each story tells of true bonds of love and loyalty, mixed with tough times and decisions, with a twist of humor and sometimes devastation...the same is true in life. With a blend of her own family members and heritage along with lots of fiction, it's hard to tell where reality stops and fantasy begins.
The story is filled with joy, loss, and second chances at love. I was glued to pages as each unknown circumstance happened. I had tears in my eyes from the danger, and then was happy when there was hope. The main characters had layers and were filled with faith and sought God's guidance in everything.
Kendrick's anguish pulled my heart strings and then was happy with the way everything turned out. The story seemed believable and the author description of the mountains and surrounding community made me feel like I was there. A really good read. Highly Recommended. I can't wait to read another in the Echoes of Thunder series.
This short, clean mountain man style historical romance was a lot of fun to read! I loved how the main characters relied on God for answers to their troubles, and how they were willing to work together and grew to love each other more as time progressed! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.
Kendrick found the woman of his dreams when he met Aleah. Their love was true and they were willing to sacrifice anything to be together. Kendrick was a mountain man and meant that Aleah would have to leave her family and the city they lived in. She didn’t care she just wanted to be his wife. They had just started their lives when tragedy happened. Would life ever be the same again.
What a great story of love, loss and finding love again. I couldn't put it down! There is a ton of action, deception, love and acceptance. God is foremost in this book. Prayer and trusting the Lord is at the heart of this story throughout the entire book. Excellent read!
A lovely well written story of love, loss and second chances. Kendrick and Aleah are deeply in love and, against her family's wishes, she marries Kendrick, moves to a secluded area in the mountains and starts a family. An unexpected disaster changes everything and Kendrick faces raising his young daughter alone. His mother-in-law has different ideas and is determined to raise her granddaughter in town and will stop at nothing to make it happen. I fell in love with the characters of Kendrick and Aleah, the setting is beautifully described and the plot is exciting and suspenseful. The ending was highly satisfying. Kendrick's Anguish is well worth reading.
Kendrick's Anguish will grab you from the first page. Kendrick lives up in the mountains, to avoid the issues of town life. The people who live up in the mountains, will be there for their neighbors, but mind their own business. Kendrick has been in town more so to court Aleah. Their new life together will be hard, but special. Aleah's love for Kendrick grows, as her family still don't understand. Their doubts will cause trouble. This will only be the beginning of more anguish for all. As tragedy strikes on the mountain, life must move forward. This story will make you heart swell with love and root for new life on the mountain. Courageous characters and a brilliant story. I was given an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review.
“They have chosen solitude in the rugged wilderness for their own reasons. When devastation rips through their lives, their sorrows are like Echoes of Thunder throughout the mountains.”
The Mountain Men—Echoes of Thunder is a multi-author series that are clean, historical series revolving around mountain men and the life they chose, and the women who play a vital role in their lives. It is the beauty of the land that can also be harsh and unforgiving. Love and respect are key, as if life and death.
Kendrick Alden loves his piece of land on the mountain, but is hoping to someday fall in love and marry. When he meets Aleah Hartman in town, there is a connection. Courting won’t be easy, but she is worth it. They plan to marry, which her mother doesn’t agree with, yet Aleah is a legal adult. They marry and return to the mountain, where Kendrick spends time teaching her the ways of the land, the dangers, and how the people on the mountain have systems in place. It doesn’t take long until she understands and loves her new home. When they discover that they are to be parents, Aleah’s mother, Patricia, thinks that Aleah will stay in town to have the child and is upset that she won’t. Another year passes, and they return with their precious daughter, Kendra, but overhear a conversation that has them upset, leaving and returning to their mountain.
Life and death are natural, but it has people reacting differently. Kendrick is devastated by losing his wife, but he has a child who needs him. Then, he will get shocking news: Aleah’s parents are suing him for custody of his child. The people of the mountain are a family amongst themselves and help Kendrick with Kendra, especially when he must go to town to meet an attorney and go to court.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil in people. Not everyone on the mountain is friendly; there is one family that doesn’t help others. Kendrick has Zeb and Levi and their families. What a surprise to learn that the one thing Aleah wanted was a preacher and schoolteacher—and that is happening. But how Kendrick and the teacher, Elizabeth, respond to one another leaves him to believing that maybe it is best for Kendra if he were to fall in love and marry again. Could this help him with the custody case, too?
“The heart just knows. I don’t want you to be lonely. Kendra deserves to have two parents to love her.”
The story is an emotional tale with a beautiful outcome. Yes, it does have sadness, moments of page-turning action, and nail-biting emotions. In the end, life finds new joys and peace.

This touching love story kicks off the multi-author Mountain Men--Echoes of Thunder series. It is a story of a cherished love taken by tragedy and a new one discovered, as healing opens Kendrick's heart again. I was drawn into the story immediately and was so caught up in the lives of the characters that I read straight through to the end. The emotion-packed plot moves at a steady pace with several unexpected twists. The characters are so well-crafted and believable that I found myself really caring deeply for Kendrick, Aleah, Kendra, and Elizabeth, while Mrs. Hartman and the Carpenters tested every ounce of my patience! The true-to-life mountain wilderness setting adds enjoyment and authenticity to the read. I appreciate the way faith is woven into the story with sincerity and relevance. I think all inspirational historical romance fans will find plenty to enjoy here, just as I did. I read an early copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a fantastic story! The story draws you in until you are a part of the wonderful mountain life. Each character captured my heart and at times I felt it was breaking. The author shows God’s hand in Kendrick’s life on the mountain and how faithful God is. A beautiful story from start to finish that kept me engrossed in the pages to the end!
How does one even begin to do justice to a story which takes the reader from tears of both joy and anguish, yet somehow manages to keep hope alive throughout? I was left with a smile, happiness and the knowing that our Father remains consistent and true to His promise to never leave us or forsake us. A book to be read and read again by an author to follow, always anticipating her next work!
Living up in the mountains away from the busyness of town, what could go wrong? Life is great, being in love is great and enjoying a beautiful daughter together, what could be better? Kendrick is living life as he has wanted with his new wife. A few years into their marriage, tragedy strikes and he is left to raise their daughter alone. Kendrick has to face someone wanting to take her while he is still grieving. I enjoyed this book and the emotions it brought.
Such a heart warming story of a true love and God-fearing people who were wholly committed to God and each other. When tragedy happens, poor Kendrick’s cries echoed across the mountains. But, he had to take care of their little daughter and make a living, trapping. Just as he was settling in to his changed circumstances, he receives a lawsuit from someone who claimed he was not now, nor ever would, giving his child the kind of life she deserves.
