Lauri Robinson's chosen genre to write is Western historical, and when asked why, she says, "Because I know I wasn't the only girl who wanted to grow up and marry Little Joe Cartwright."
With a degree in early childhood education, Lauri has spent three decades working in the non-profit field for Head Start, Child Abuse Intervention, the March of Dimes, and United Way. She claims the once upon a time and happily ever after premise of romance novels has always been a form of stress relief. When her husband suggested she write one, she took the challenge and has loved every minute of the journey.
Lauri lives in rural Minnesota, where she and her husband spend every spare moment with their three grown sons and their families, which includes three granddaughters, two stepgrandsons and two granddogs. She volunteers for several organizations, including her local library, and spends most fall weekends filling the freezer with homemade foodstuffs from the bountiful harvest of her husband's green thumb. She's a diehard Elvis fan (yes, she's been to Graceland), and loves to spend Sundays watching NASCAR, either live or on TV. However, she says her favorite weekends are spent in the woods of northern Minnesota on the land homesteaded by her great-grandfather.
Most of her childhood was spent in western Kansas, which is the setting for several of her stories. Lauri is a member of RWA, Northern Lights Writers, and Hearts Through History Romance Writers, as well as several online writing groups. She writes for Harlequin, Mills and Boon and The Wild Rose Press.
At First Sight: Penny Jordan is struggling to keep her beloved ranch above water, but she's having a very difficult time of it. Everyone keeps telling her she should marry, particularly a neighboring rancher Luke James, who has had his eye on her and her propriety for a while now. Too bad Penny doesn't like him or trust him at all. And so, on a day when she simply can't deal anymore, Penny writes to her best friend Candice - who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband - to find her and send her a husband - for Candice often claimed to know just the man for Penny.
Said man is Candice brother-in-law Jace Owens, who is still reeling from the lost of his wife and baby the year before. He seems so lost to the word that Candice and her husband Daniel decide that sending him to Penny is the best thing they can do. So they concoct a crazy scheme that leaves Jace and Penny married.
Being at the Copper Cow helps Jace, and he sees it immediately, he also sees that Penny needs his help and his protection, so he stays there for a while, convinced he will leave once he sees Penny settled...but that might prove to be too much for their newly mended hearts.
Second Glance: Mail-Order Husband is a sweet little story about loss and love and how to move on. Certain parts are a bit unrealistic to be sure, and I did feel it went of a bit in circles for a while, but it was very charming and cute.
Penny and Jace make a wonderful couple and it's fun to see them try not to fall in love with each other yet finding themselves more than halfway there.
Bottom Line: A quick, funny read. Not very remarkable but not bad.
Guess this is what happens one year into covid self-isolation? Just gotta keep busy... so reading lots of books, it is!
Lauri Robinson is/was one of my favourite western historical Harlequin writers. And yeah, I'm still bitter that Harlequin cancelled this particular genre from their Historical line a couple years ago. However, thank goodness for Thriftbooks, as I was able to located one of Lauri's early western cowboy romance.
The book began with a very unusual premises, however, it was a fun, engaging read. It was surprised with regards to the hero's quick turn around, so to speak, but otherwise, I devoured 230-pages in less than 24 hours.
Now I'm gonna begin a multiple book series by Jillian Hart... :)
Many obvious grammatical errors made reading a little frustrating. But otherwise, I very much enjoyed the story. Penny needed, rather than wanted, a husband. Married by proxy, when Jace arrives the knot is already tied. He pretty much takes matters into his capable hands, even allowing Penny to remain involved. I liked the humor, and I wasn't expecting the suspenseful conclusion.
