The Wisdom of Bug

Rate this book
Now updated in a fully revised and expanded Second Edition — with new chapters, fresh scenes, and a brand-new festive cover.

Evelyn Crawford is officially having the worst run-up to Christmas in history. Overnight she’s become the reluctant CEO of her father’s multi-million-pound pet-supply empire, the board want her head on a platter, and she’s just caught her girlfriend tangled up with someone else. Christmas cheer? Absolutely not.

So when a scruffy little dog appears in the middle of her London office, Evelyn assumes she’s cracked under pressure.

Alyssa Fox, head of Four Paws Rescue, is equally fed up. Every year her centre is treated like a seasonal gift shop by people who think a dog is a stocking filler. This year she’s calling it quits—no adoptions, no time-wasters—and partnering with Crawford Pet Supplies to keep her dogs socialised and (hopefully) out of trouble.

What she didn’t plan for was a gorgeous, grumpy CEO who hates Christmas… or the rescue dog Bug, who immediately decides Evelyn is his new favourite human.

With dogs roaming the halls, the office descending into festive chaos, and one stubbornly cheerful rescue owner invading her world, Evelyn’s life becomes anything but orderly. And Alyssa—well, she’s always been a love-’em-and-leave-’em type... so why is falling for Evelyn starting to feel dangerously easy?

A cosy, heartwarming British Christmas romance filled with humour, dogs, unexpected sparks, and one very wise little pup determined to nudge two women together. Perfect for fans of feel-good sapphic romcoms, grumpy-sunshine pairings, and festive stories with real charm.

Like........ It's nice, has good ideas, good writing, coherent plot, but it's hell fucking boring tbh.
For a book with less than 300 pages, it's soooooooooooo slow on the uptake, so now by the time they've met, i've detached from both of them because i'm bored af.

And slowburn to me... means yearning, pining or taking a relationship slowly for whatever reason, ect....
IT DOES NOT MEAN NOT EVEN MEETING UNTIL 31% IN...... and having 3 MINOR conversations by 45%.... (all of which are short, about dogs, or really boring.)

I'll also add that the third convo they have... IS FUCKING TOLD TO YOU by the following sentence........
"Alyssa and Evelyn chatted daily. They spent their time talking about this and that."

WOW..........
And then... to make it even better, it's followed up with...

"For example, Alyssa now knew that Evelyn had a major man crush on Jason Statham. Hawaiian pizza was her favourite food. The argument of whether pineapple should belong on pizza was a doozy. Eventually, they had to agree to disagree. Evelyn’s favourite colour was emerald green, and her favourite band was The Red Hot Chili Peppers."

I also hate that instead of like... discovering things about eachother, and getting to spend time with our girls and falling in love with them whilst they fell for eachother...

We got... ONE MC CONVIENTENTLY walked past a group of people who are talking about the other MC having an ex-girlfriend.... So now she knows she's gay without any interactions between the women? why?

It really did be glossing over all the best parts of "slow burn" and I just ended up not caring about these two at all 😭😭

I love stories with dogs so I looked forward to reading this one. Dog rescue centre Four Paws Dog Sanctuary is teamed up with Crawford Pet Supplies to partner dogs with employee volunteers. Each will supply stimulation for the other (in the work environment) and perhaps an adoption will result in a couple of months. Great idea!! If only the current stressed out, reluctantly placed Crawford CEO knew about the arrangement. Evelyn Crawford butts heads with Four Paws owner Alyssa Fox from the start. Both women have work obsessed attitudes until Bug, a black and white cocker spaniel works his magic.
Root's sweet romance just in time for Christmas has touches of humor and warmth with Bug acting as cupid bringing the leads together. This storyline also highlights a specific problem pet stores and pet rescue centres face during the year, particularly during The Holidays and a wonderful way to remedy it. Thank you Alyson for this lovely little tale.
I got a bit teary reading about Bug - who reminded of my little dog Sophie from many, many years ago.

A fast paced Christmas read lesfic.

A little bit shallow, I wasn't fully sold on the ultimate connection but it was a sweet story with doggie antics, so I would still recommend it!

The Wisdom of Bug the cute cocker spaniel, need I say more? You won’t regret reading it!

I wouldn’t usually read a Christmas book during Halloween month, but I received an arc for this and I honestly am really glad I did because it’s so cute. Bug changed Evelyn and Alyssa’s life that November 1st all because he wondered off into the ice queens office. This little guy seems to be able to understand exactly what people need and he does just that. Alyson didn’t lie in the title. Alyssa, who owns a dog rescue called four paws is at a buddy day at Crawford Pet Supplies. She meets the icey CEO of Crawford, Evelyn when panic looking
through the entire building looking for their missing dog. Bug. Bug is found in Evelyn’s office in all his yet to be known wiseness. I enjoyed both characters, as well as the side characters and the plot itself. It was such a fantastic, short read. It had a little bit of humour, a little bit of tugging on the heartstrings, a little bit of spice to warm you up ready for the festive season and a whole lot of cute.

I received a free copy of this book from Alyson and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Bug is the star pup of the story. He is very intuitive about human emotions and what someone needs. This is a lovely romance. Evelyn is over working herself and won’t listen to her best friend. Alyssa is only focused on her pet rescue. When the two meet, there’s an instant connection and Bug is determined to make sure they get together. A sweet holiday romance.

It's the third book by Alyson Root that I've read so far... and what can I say? I am totally in love with her humor, her writing style and just everything!!! This book is also so endlessly sweet and delightful.

It's a holiday romance about Evelyn, CEO of a pet supplies company, who is at the office from morning until late at night. Her relationship is on the rocks, but that just means she can work longer hours. Until she meets Alyssa, who runs a dog rescue center. The two are so different and yet they are attracted to each other. However, Alyssa doesn't do relationships... how can that possibly fit? And then there's the little dog Bug.... And I'm sure we can all agree that he is the real star of the book!!! OMG, I want to cuddle him.

It's a book that I thoroughly enjoyed and unfortunately finished way too quickly (only 150 pages). Why??? I need more of the three of them. This chemistry between Evelyn and Alyssa and this longing... oh man, I really suffered. But I also had so many butterflies in my stomach. It's just a great novella all around. And I didn't have the feeling that the developments happened too quickly, as I sometimes do with novellas. Everything just fell into place! An absolute recommendation. Maybe Alyson will write another book about them one day? I would be very happy!

I loved the original shorter story and again was hooked from the first scene. Root has a way with words that amuses me as it is based in reality.
I adored getting more of the story. The main character is fully drawn as are the two supporting humans. I read it with a smile on my face and I will confess literally lol'd quite a few times. this is perfect for the season, any season!

Loved this story!! Such a fun, festive read. Even though I'm not much of a dog person (I know, please don't crucify me), I still fell in love with the clear main character of the book: Bug, an adorable little cocker spaniel who added a bit of Christmas magic to Alyssa and Evelyn's career focused lives.

I really appreciated how little drama there was in this book. It was predominately heartwarming, with a little bit of spice sprinkled in.

Overall, I would definitely recommend. But if you want the full effect, you should make sure to pour a cup of hot chocolate before settling in :)

A sapphic Christmas romance with an adorable matchmaking job - sign me up!! I adored this book and of course the real MC who made it as special as it was - Bug. I love books where animals, especially dogs, play a key role in the plot and story, and Alyson Root did not disappoint with The Wisdom of Bug!

This wasn’t as spicy as some of Alyson’s other books, but the budding connection and building heat between Evelyn and Alyssa made for a delicious slow burn romance. The physical attraction between these two women was instant, but their first encounter was far from pleasant. Evelyn isn’t what I would call an ice queen, but she has some definite ice queen characteristics at the start. She’s a closed-off workaholic who can’t wait for the Christmas season to be over.

Then one day Evelyn almost trips over a dog in the middle of her office. And she discovers that only did her dad take off with no notice and leave her as CEO of Crawford Pet Supplies - he also made some sort of arrangement with a local dog rescue for the season.

Cue the sexy Alyssa Fox, owner of Four Paws. Tired of dogs being returned after the “Christmas shine” wears off, Alyssa decides to close the rescue for a couple of months. But the dogs still need interaction and play time. Which is why Alyssa, her team, and all their dogs are now at Crawford Pet Supplies. Every dog is paired with a volunteer, except Bug - who found his way to Evelyn’s office, and eventually into Evelyn’s heart.

The book is aptly named because Bug is a miracle worker who somehow knows exactly what both Evelyn and Alyssa need - long before either of them can see it or admit it to themselves. It’s not just about bringing them together, but about helping each of them learn to let go a little, and take care of themselves as much as they take care of their companies.

The Wisdom of Bug is a heartwarming story about two work obsessed women and a very special dog who helps them learn to live more fully…and even find love. It’s a quick and delightful holiday read you won’t want to put down!

I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.

Finding Love at Christmas…

Quick, sweet sapphic Christmas story! Alyssa is married to her work, an amazing dog rescue and has decided to close up shop for two months until after the New Year. Evelyn is a CEO of her father’s Pet Supply company, she is quickly burning out. Their jobs become combined matching up volunteers from the company to the dogs from the rescue. The cutest and smartest (and most intuitive) of the dogs makes itself at home in Evelyn’s office and she meets Alyssa. After a little meet-ugly, they start to form a friendship. Will they find what they need in each other? Read and find out! I find this author easy to read, I get immediately swept into her stories, become invested in the characters, laugh and love along with them and have a hard time letting them go. Recommend!

📖 The Wisdom of Bug
This is a really cute and enjoyable Christmas read.

Basically, a workaholic, driven by family obligations, and CEO of a pet supply company (Evelyn) meets cute dog (Bug) and the cuter woman (Alyssa) running the rescue trying to rehome Bug. Sparks fly; tempers flare; different types of sparks fly; fun ensues; Christmas happens.

I loved that Alyssa was following her heart by founding her pet rescue. She's a woman who is mostly together, but doubts she is capable of sustaining a relationship. Evelyn is driving herself way too hard to head up her parents' company. She only has time for work and worry and hasn't had the best luck with relationships. Then she meets Bug, a little dog with a big heart and a knack for knowing just what people need. And throughout, the Christmas spirit shines.

Read this to put Christmas in your heart and to remind yourself that your priorities really are well within your control!

Aww - I want Bug's wisdom! 🐶🥰

This was super cute! Let me say that winning the lottery and opening a dog rescue is literally my dream! And although it wasn't quite as smooth, Evelyn and Alyssa had an instant attraction that was hard to deny. Bug was the one who had to help move things along lol. A wonderful holiday read 🎄🎁

this was so cute! i loved alyson root, and this was no exception. i love dogs in books especially when they play such a big role. bug was just the absolute best and wisest dog. i loved the relationship between evelyn and alyssa and how it evolved, it wasn’t rushed or too slow it felt like it was paced well for a short book, especially coming from a novella. i listened to the original a couple weeks ago so i was very excited for the extended version and it did not disappoint! i had a great time with all of the added scenes, like the way the market and the christmas parties were expanded on, and it talked about their feelings more, i felt like we got to know the book more this time around. loved their respective bestfriends, they were hilarious and had all the tough love that they both so desperately needed.
i was so glad that evelyn talked to her dad and really just yelled at him bc he kinda deserved it😂
i also really liked how they moved into alyssa’s mobile home instead of evelyn’s cushy penthouse, such a nice change of pace. typically it’s the other way around so i liked that! overall a great read and i really enjoyed it 🩷

I usually make it a rule not to read Christmas books before December 1st (Bah! Humbug!) but I received an ARC of this, so broke that rule!
This is a short and sweet Christmassy tale with Alyssa coming into Evelyn’s life at just the right time. Evelyn is struggling with her grief following the death of her mother and with the responsibility thrust upon her by her father as CEO of his Pet supply company. She’s working crazy hours and is in a pretty toxic relationship with a woman who wants her only because of her money. Meanwhile, Alyssa doesn’t do serious, only casual. Sparks fly almost immediately between the two but it takes some time for them to give in to the inevitable and open themselves up to a relationship rather than just a fling…
This is a sweet story with minimal angst and a good amount of sizzle. I loved the use of very British vernacular, particularly with regard to some of our more common insults! Someone else may have felt the need to pander to an American audience, but Ms Root doesn’t do that. She says it the way we would! And the dog, Bug, was a little star - particularly with his raiding of the Christmas decorations! My only issue really was that this was far too short, as I raced through it in only a couple of hours! Very enjoyable, even in October!

Over this book was a good read. I loved the incorporation of dogs, especially Bug. I also loved that the book talked about how many dogs are returned to the shelter after Christmas which is really sad. The book was a bit slow at times though. I got an advanced readers copy of this book from book sirens but my review is unbiased

I absolutely adored this read! After I reached chapter 5 I couldn't put it down. I had to finish it the rest of the way throguh. The emotional struggles of both MCs were very real and so were the complications that followed. Bug, oh Bug, he may have been my favorite character. I am very much looking forward to reading more stories by Alyson Root.

An opposites attract holiday romance that’s low on drama, complete with relatable characters, sparks (and a bit of spice), and an absolutely adorable dog? How could you possibly go wrong!

Evelyn Crawford is the (unexpectedly) newly appointed CEO of her family’s pet supply empire, and (also unexpectedly) newly single. She’s overworked and overwhelmed, and if it’s not one thing it’s another. Alyssa Fox runs a dog rescue, but she’s sick of people adopting the cuties as holiday presents only to return them after the new year. She’s concocted a plan and it’s going flawlessly—except for one small detail.

When Bug the cocker spaniel shows up in Evelyn’s office and Alyssa comes in search of him there’s an instant spark between the women. Bug seems to find his way to Evelyn’s office every day, and the two women strike up a friendship with an undercurrent of more. I loved seeing their relationship develop, with each bringing something that the other was missing, and Bug was just so adorable.

Lillia Green does a really nice job with the audiobook narration, and The Wisdom of Bug was enjoyable all around.

I received a free ALC from the Sapphic Author Collective, but my review is unbiased and left voluntarily.

I’m a big fan of Alyson Root and this holiday romance didn’t disappoint.

It was very cute and cozy with low angst and it was an easy read. I love Bug! Growing up, I had two Cocker Spaniels, so I feel like I could envision all of Bugs mannerisms to a T.

Really my only complaint, and this is definitely a me thing, is I hate the nickname “Al” for Alyssa. Or anything really.

Anyways, I enjoyed this book!

This was a great little feel-good, no-angst, pet-friendly, cute Christmas-adjacent love story. It's a very short and fast read that will leave you smiling.

Pros:
-Bug the dog! Great character and I loved how the author had him actually be important to the story (without going overboard air-bud style, because after all Bug IS just a dog).
-Enough backstory and side characters that the MC's felt like real people and the world felt like a real place.
-The amount of character arc that was included in such a short book was actually impressive.
-Cute romance. Not unrealistically uncomplicated but also no angst or stress for the reader.

Cons:
-Lots of the relationship development and other plot points happened "off-screen" with a brief summary to keep the reader in the loop. Individual days took chapters and then weeks were skipped over! Considering how short this book was I think that the story would have benefitted from including these scenes in the book, even in a short form. Show, don't tell!
-Short book, as mentioned above. Not a con for everyone but when I have a book that I like I would always want it to be longer as opposed to shorter. This one particularly would have been better if it was longer (I think) so I'm including it as its own point!

Overall the con's are clearly outweighed by the pro's; the only real downsides to this book are that there isn't more of it, which essentially tells you that its a good read!

The Wisdom of Bug by Alyson Root is a delightful holiday romance that checks all the right boxes for a cozy, festive read. Narrated by the talented Lila Green, this story is a charming blend of grumpy-sunshine dynamics, opposites attract, and plenty of adorable doggy moments to melt your heart.

Evelyn Crawford, thrust into the CEO role of her family’s pet supply empire, is having a rough go of it. Between battling boardroom drama and dealing with a messy personal life, the holiday season feels more like a burden than a joy. Enter Alyssa Fox, the fiery and no-nonsense operator of Four Paws dog rescue, who’s determined to keep her pups safe from the revolving door of holiday adoptions. When their worlds collide, sparks fly, and the opposites-attract tension is palpable.

The grumpy-sunshine pairing between Evelyn and Alyssa is such a delight. Evelyn’s reserved, slightly frazzled energy plays beautifully off Alyssa’s determined, headstrong demeanor. Their banter is sharp, their chemistry is undeniable, and their growing connection is both heartwarming and satisfying. Adding in Bug, the wise and lovable pup, as the story’s glue is an absolute win—it’s impossible not to root for this quirky trio.

The narration by Lila Green is lovely. She captures the nuances of both Evelyn and Alyssa, bringing out the humor, emotion, and tension in their interactions. Green’s performance enhances the cozy, festive atmosphere, making this short and sweet audiobook a joy to listen to.

The short listen packs a lot in with its bi representation, and a little bit of family drama that adds depth to Evelyn’s journey, and the lovable pack of dogs that steal the show. It’s a story about growth, connection, and finding unexpected magic in the holiday season.

If you’re looking for a feel-good romance with opposites-attract vibes, adorable pups, and a touch of festive cheer, The Wisdom of Bug is a wonderful pick. Short, sweet, and full of heart—it’s perfect for getting into the holiday spirit!

Thank you to Alyson Root for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review

3.5 Stars rounded up because of the fantastic narration.

This is a super cute and heartwarming short Christmas listen about two women who realize there is more to life than just work, there needs to be a healthy balance. Oh and of course, with an adorable pup named Bug.

Alyssa owns Four Paws Pet Rescue and is sick of seeing animals being adopted during the holidays only to be returned in the new year once reality sinks in. So this year she has decided to close the rescue for the season. She team up with pet supply company, Crawford with a buddy system to keep the pups active and socially interacting with others. Every pup has a person besides one.

Evelyn isn’t really happy with her life right now. She is CEO of her father’s pet supply company, a position she not only doesn’t want but is drowning herself in. She comes across as a bit of an ice queen but is more just unhappy and burnt out.

Enter fluff-ball Bug. He has a knack for knowing what people want and, more importantly, what they need. He gets away from everyone, and you can guess where he heads. Yes, Evelyn nearly trips right over him and of course, ends up falling head over heels - for more than just the snuggleBug.

This is kind of cookie-cutter Christmas romance, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I would have loved it if it had a little more depth to the story.
