BRIAN They say time heals everything. Whoever said that never dated Caitlin Baker.
It’s been years since we ended, and most days, I pretend I’m over her. Then she walks back into my life—all curves and chaos—and suddenly, I’m right back where I swore I’d never be.
One night. That’s all it was supposed to be.
She had her city life. I had my badge and this town. It was better that way. Cleaner. Safer.
But now she’s back—for real. Broke, stubborn, and crashing in my damn spare room. I tell myself I can handle it. Keep it friendly. Keep my heart out of it.
Then she tells me she’s pregnant.
And just like that, I’m all in. Even if I know how this ends.
She’s never wanted to stay. And I’ve never planned to leave.
CAITLIN I never planned on coming back to Poplar Springs. And I sure as hell didn’t plan on falling back into Brian’s bed.
But when everything fell apart, this was the only place left. I told myself I’d keep it simple. Work. Save up. Move on.
But nothing’s simple when Brian’s involved. He’s steadier than I remember. Stronger, too. And the way he looks at me? Like he never stopped.
I was already halfway gone when I found out I was pregnant.
Now I’m stuck between the life I thought I wanted… And the man I’ve never stopped loving.
But he belongs to this town. And I’ve never belonged anywhere.
Mary Sue Jackson is the romance pen name created for all those cowboy dreamers! This Montana-based cowgirl is a rancher, and knows what hard work means. But despite being up at dawn and working past dusk, she still finds time for what she really loves... romance! With so many hours spent alone, riding across the seemingly never-ending expanse of grasslands, she has plenty of time to dream of love and the romantic tales of ranch life.
When Mary Sue's not out on the grasslands dreaming up her next story, she's most often spending time with her own personal hunky rancher, her husband. One of Mary Sue's favorite activities is to ride the ranch with her husband in the evening and hold his hand as they watch the sun go down over the prairie.
I read this book as a Read Now option from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I didn't realize this was part of a series until I opened it on Kindle to start reading. I don't normally start in the middle of a series like this, but that being said, I wasn't lost or out of the loop with the characters or storyline. I liked this story enough that I'll probably go back and read the four stories before this one.
This was a second chance at love story with Brian, the local sheriff, and Catilin, the girl from his past that he ended a relationship with because he thought she's wasn't that serious about him. There's a lot of complicated relationship in Caitlin's life and a bit of spiraling turmoil that brings her back to Poplar Springs, and Brian. What follows is a relationship that's worth it but takes a lot of work, letting things go, and compromise. I can't wait to read more about the Thorne family.

A man wants her attention but Brian a long lost love steps in and guides him out of the building, saving her. They realize they know one another and will spend time finding out what each have been up to since college days. But she isn't planning to stay forever, and he doesn't want to leave. Can what they've rebuilt last?I really enjoy romances with a second‑chance trope. In this story, Caitlin and Brian dated in college and reconnect years later at a brewery, spend a night together, and then go their separate ways. But when Caitlin returns home to Poplar Springs to help a friend and get back on her feet financially, she ends up staying—of all places—with Brian, who is now the sheriff. From there, the author weaves their journey toward a HEA, gradually revealing what scarred them, what holds them back, what they truly want, and how they still feel about each other. Their fears and vulnerabilities are laid bare, yet both characters remain strong and grounded—especially Brian, who maybe doesn’t always need to be quite so steadfast. Life throws in an unexpected surprise, and we get to watch them navigate it while working through the issues standing in their way. It’s an emotional journey with great supporting characters who add to the plot and balance everything with humor, heart, and genuine warmth. Brian and Caitlin are simply meant to be. A second chance between two Poplar Springs natives who dated while away at college but while he knew he would be returning to their hometown, she knew she would never go back there because of her uncaring parents living there. So he broke it off with her but they failed to communicate their reasons behind their decisions or their budding love for each other. He goes home to Poplar Springs, Colorado and she begins life alone in Austin, Texas. Five years later they accidentally run into each other in Beaumont and share a night she desperately needed but leaves for Austin right after, but fate was not through with Brian and Caitlin quite yet. I must say I didn’t see how this was going to work out. Both dedicated Sheriff Brian Thorne and ex-Poplar Springs native Caitlin Baker had legitimate reasons why they couldn’t leave the city they lived in for the other. Although miscommunication may have been the reason for the first breakup, the second one was so heart wrenching because they knew they loved each other but couldn’t find a way past his own self-incriminating, self-imposed responsibilities to Poplar Springs and she couldn’t live there especially if he couldn’t find a way to redefine his priorities and she didn’t want him to have to do that either. As in most of the books that I have read by Mary Sue Jackson, I got all wrapped up in these characters and felt a part of their everyday life as they he handled town legal issues and she waited on tables at Bite and Brew and dealt with her self-centered parents and the noisy, hateful biddy-bodies. Laura Thorne, Brian’s mother, showed she had some true grit in this book too. I definitely enjoyed how the author weaved in all the happenings going on in that small town. Had my attention locked from beginning to end. Oh, I guess I should mention that she actually had me hooked after the first “darling” out of Brian’s mouth. I’m loving this series!.

Unplanned by Mary Sue Jackson is an enticing small town romance featuring the town sheriff, Brian Thorne of the Poplar Springs Thornes. He was in a bar one night, thirty miles from home, when he ran into a woman from his past, Caitlin. He had been so in love with her in college, but he broke it off, breaking his own heart in the process. He was a good sheriff but a bit of a micro-manager. He thought he was the only one that could attend to things properly. He hooked up with Caitlin that night, but then she snuck away while he was sleeping. Probably for the best, but then six weeks later, there she was, back in Popular Springs. She was working in the cafe for Aurora, who had promised a place to stay but then the basement apartment had flooded. After telling the story, Brian offered his spare room having no idea that the temp employee was Caitlin. They had a lot of history, but Brian made it clear that there would be no hooking up. They were just roommates.
These are a couple of good characters with interesting backstories. Both had been hurt: Brian with the death of his father and his brother; and Caitlin with the meanness and disregard of her parents. He swore he would never leave Poplar Springs, she swore she would never move back. It was an emotional story with lots of emotional complications. Brian had a family to support him; Caitlin had no one except her brother who was away in the service, his way of escaping their parents. It was the first ever rodeo in town and that brought its own set of complications. Brian did help Caitlin in the way only a lawman could and she was grateful. It was recovering that money that enabled her to move away from him. It was a good story.
I was invited to read Unplanned by the author. All thoughts an opinions are mine. #MarySueJackson #Unplanned
This is an angst-ridden second chance at love romance. Though they had known each other each other since they were children due to his friendship with her brother, Brian and Caitlin didn’t get together until they were in college. Both had hoped for a future together until an incident triggered them both and led to a breakup. Brian returned to their hometown, a Poplar Springs and eventually became sheriff. Caitlin stayed in Austin and became a tattoo artist. Years later that get another chance at love in their hometown town of Poplar Springs, a town that holds painful memories for them both.
Brian is a man plagued by guilt and the need to protect. It spurs his dedication to his job and skews his priorities. Though he loves Caitlin, he constantly puts his job before her, fearing that if he doesn’t, someone he cares for will get hurt. This behaviour is a trigger for Caitlin, who always came in last for her parents. They valued work, appearances and the social standing before her and her brother. She was never good enough for them. Though she loves Brian, coming in second place to his work is not something she is willing to live with, nor is it something she wants for the baby she is carrying.
Her time in Poplar Springs has been enlightening though. Not everything about the town is bad. Though her parents haven’t changed, Caitlin has found support from her friends and many other others. Building a life here for herself doesn’t seem as impossible as it once was, at least until it seems that Brian has deemed his job to be more important than her. Thankfully, these two have family and friends to help set them on the right path. They finally deal with the pain of their past, get their priorities straight and learn the arts of compromise and communication.
I enjoyed this one. It was a quick read for me. They were both stubborn and it was annoying at times but they both had stuff to work on individually. The third act breakup was very predictable, I could see it coming. They needed reflection time. The side characters were all great, super supportive to Caitlin. Brian was a good guy but definitely flawed. He comes off harsh at the start, and then I was starting to like him and then he annoyed me again. Just wtf how do you say like you are so happy a) caitlin is with you and b) the fact that it’s her who is carrying his child all to tell her that they don’t come first. What a dumb stupid man. I was so mad at him for that.
I wish the length of time was longer, it’s a short timeline and I would’ve liked it to go through the pregnancy with them. It would’ve been interesting to see how Brian balances everything and seeing how helpful or supportive he is to heavily pregnant Caitlin. Also meeting the baby, I feel robbed. We start, then it’s a two week jump, and then it’s kind of unclear for a while how much time actually passed. It did feel in ways unfinished, as if this is half of the book if that makes sense? I wanted so much more.
They both have trauma too, it’s horrible. I just wish someday therapy is free because we can all be so much happier not letting trauma dictate everything. I think Brian for sure has a lot of things to unpack, things to unlearn as well. I think Caitlin is quite aware of how the trauma has shaped her but we do see towards the end she starts therapy but it’s for her, to work on her parents actions etc is their responsibility and not hers

Home is Where her Heart Always Belonged - Brian wanted some alone time at the bar to help him deal with the bombshell that was dropped in his family, but meeting his ex-girlfriend at the bar made his night even better. The last person Caitlin expected to see at the bar was Brian and spending time reminiscing about their past was really great, but the night got even better after they ended up enjoying a mind blowing experience. However the morning after brought reality back and expectations were destroyed.
Nevertheless, Caitlin found herself back in their hometown and having to share a house with Brian, as housemates. Caitlin and Brian’s relationship was initially awkward, but everything changed as time went on and they spent time together, which led to them giving in to their carnal pleasures and enjoying steamy encounters. Unfortunately, Brian and Caitlin were hesitant to get their hearts involved, as her plans didn’t involve staying in town permanently, but fate had other ideas in store for them and gave them a reason to stay together and work towards the life they previously wanted.
I was really looking forward to reading this book after reading Cal and Amy’s story in Undeniable and I can say without a shadow of doubt, that Mary Sue Jackson didn’t disappoint me with this heartfelt romance story with emotionally challenging family drama, great camaraderie and annoying small-town mentality. You will definitely enjoy reading this book, so I recommend you make it your next weekend relaxation read.

Caitlin left the small town of Poplar behind years ago and never planned to return. She’s back now to waitress for a friend who needs the help but she’s going back to Austin as soon as she can. Brian loves being sheriff in Poplar. He only left Poplar to go to college because he knew he was going to come back to be sheriff one day. Caitlin and Brian have history but do they have a future? Caitlin is a successful tattoo artist in Austin. She wants to open her own parlor but her boyfriend steals her savings which means she needs to start over. When she returns to her hometown to help our her friend, she plans to save money by living as cheap as possible. She never expects to have to live with Brian. They dated during college but their different plans for after graduation convinced them to break up. Her parents and their friends are why she has never wanted to return to Poplar. Her brother managed to escape and live with Brian’s family during high school but Caitlin didn’t get the chance to escape until college. Brian has always wanted to be sheriff. He is very popular in town. He is happy to give Caitlin a place to live while she is in town. He has the chance to learn more about her family situation and start to understand what drives her decision making. His big issue is that he carries a lot of pain from losing his brother and father years ago. This is a small town, second chance romance. This story contains a lot of family drama and a lot of good small-town people. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.
A second chance at love that feels like coming home! Unplanned is a masterclass in the "he falls first" trope, proving that some fires never truly go out, no matter how much time has passed.
I’m giving this a 5-star review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A huge thank you to the author, Mary Sue Jackson, for providing me with an early copy of this heart-wrenching and spicy second-chance romance. All opinions are strictly my own.
The Review: I am a total sucker for a second-chance love story, especially when the MMC falls first, hard, and never truly gets over the FMC. This was done marvelously in this fifth Poplar Springs book. Brian is the perfect MMC—strong and protective, yet sweet, endearing, and full of spice. Caitlin is a fantastic FMC; she and Brian both have significant issues to resolve, but they are so good together that I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end. For that chemistry alone, it deserves all 5 stars!
The Good: The emotional payoff in this story is top-tier. Mary Sue Jackson handles the "unfinished business" between Brian and Caitlin with so much care, making their eventual reunion feel earned and inevitable. The blend of sweet, small-town vibes with high-heat spice makes it a perfectly balanced read.
The Not-So-Good: Both characters carry a lot of baggage, and at times, their individual "issues" can make the journey feel quite heavy. However, seeing them work through those obstacles together is exactly what makes their connection so strong.
Did I stay up until 3:45am to finish this book? Yes, and I have 0 regrets!
Set in the small town of Poplar Springs, Colorado, Brian, the sheriff, goes to a bar outside of town one weekend and runs into his college ex-girlfriend, Caitlin who's visiting from Austin. They spend the night lost in each other, understanding it's just one night, not even exchanging numbers.
A few weeks later, after life as she knows it falls apart, Caitlin finds herself back in the hometown she swore she'd never return to. And who just happens to have a room available to rent? The Sheriff, of course!
I loved the emotional depth of Caitlin and Brian. They didn't shy away from confronting their past mistakes. I appreciated how honest their conversations were. Caitlin's tumultuous relationship with her parents was so real and raw that I felt her pain and grief.
This story has found family, betrayal, grief, longing, uncertainty, and love. If you appreciate well-developed characters who aren't afraid to face their issues head-on, and just the right amount of spice this one is for you!
A huge thanks to Booksprout and Mary Sue Jackson for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
An angst ridden, second chance story set in Poplar Springs and follows the journey that Brian and his ex Caitlin take. Childhood and College sweethearts, Brian and Caitlin find themselves in a bar together one night and reacquaint themselves in a steamy way. After finding herself in financial difficulty Caitlin returns to Poplar Springs from Austin, to help her friend Aurora and discovers that she is now staying with Brian following a flooding. Dealing with the aftermath of losing all her money to an ex who stole it, she also has to deal with her parents and their friends who are determined to criticise and condemn her, just like they always have. Spending time with Brian, Caitlin discovers his need to protect everyone in the town as a result of the death of his father and brother, but it is at the cost of any burgeoning relationship he may have with Caitlin. When she discovers she is pregnant she goes back to Austin and forces Brian to take a long hard look at himself and decide whether he wants to be with Caitlin and the baby or not. An emotional read that will take you on a rollercoaster as you discover if love really can conquer all with two people who carry a lot of baggage and emotional trauma.

I love this series! This was the perfect plot for Brian, the town's sheriff.
This books focuses on the relationship between Brian and Caitlin, childhood friends, college sweethearts. They went they separate ways -he left- and they both carry that pain. One night they reencounter and end up in a passionate night, but she leaves silently. Weeks after she is forced to comeback to Poplar Springs, and she finds a place to live with Brian. What comes next is an awakening to their feelings while also dealing with their own pains.
He is a controlled, wants to protect, and always puts the town and everything ahead, and deals with the death of his dad and brother. She has never been a first choice, she was never enough for her parents. She feels that he might never see her as first choice, but when fate sends them a baby they will have to reexamine their hearts.
I loved this book, and you will need to add it to your TBR list.

Oh wow… I LOVED Caitlin & Brian’s story 🥹💖 From the moment they ran into each other at that bar, I was completely hooked. Their chemistry? Instant. The tension? Real. And then—life throws all the obstacles at them, and suddenly Caitlin’s back in Poplar Springs, sharing a roof with the sheriff she can’t stop thinking about 😳💞 The story is fast-paced, with just the right amount of spice 🥵, but what really got me was the emotional depth. Caitlin and Brian aren’t afraid to confront the past, the mistakes, and the messy parts of love. Their conversations felt raw and honest, and I loved seeing Brian step up even when things were hard. The side characters are great too, adding layers of found family, grief, and longing. And the ending? Perfect balance of heart and heat, with Brian willing to give everything for Caitlin and her realizing she might be ready to let go of the past to stay. If you love: 🏡 Small-town vibes 👩❤️👨 Second chance romance 💞 Slow burn chemistry 🫂 Found family & emotional depth 🔥 Just the right amount of spice …then this one’s for you.
This is the 5th book in the “Poplar Spring Series.” This is a second chance at romance Brian and Caitlin who share a pass in the small town of Poplar Spring. Brian and Caitlin see each at local bar. The romantic relationship that the two once shared was never forgotten and their feelings are still their up front and center. Caitlin is staying with Brian at his home when the two have a romantic interlude and Caitlin finds out that she is pregnant. These two characters have a lot going on in their personal lives. When Caitlin learns that she is having a baby; she vows that her child will have a happy life nothing like the life she had. Now with a baby on the way can these two find their way and overcome their emotional lives and having an HEA with a baby on the way. There two are great together and deserve at second chance at romance.

When Brian encountered Caitlin, his first love, in a pub even though they hadn’t seen each other for years the feelings between them led to a steamy night before they went back to their lives. A few months later the woman he never expected to see again has returned to their hometown or that circumstances would have her becoming his roommate.
Caitlin couldn’t escape her hometown fast enough due to her less than ideal relationship with her family. She had created a new life for herself far away until a betrayal leaves her in dire straights when she returns to her hometown to work with her best friend. As she and Brian become close once again will this be their second chance or are they destined for heartbreak once again?
This is a heartwarming story about love, family and second chances. Even though their path is emotional and has a few missteps along the way they help each other overcome the past and make the changes so that they can have the happiness they both deserve.
This entire series is thoroughly enjoyable. Each story follows a small town couple and has happiness and heat. Brian and Caitlin are the most recent. They've known each other for years. He is her brother's best friend. That made her off limits. That is until they ended up at the same college together. Lines of communication were crossed, misunderstandings happened. He went back to their small town and became the sheriff.. She stayed in Austin.
Now she's back trying to rebuild after her ex stole everything from her. But she isn't planning to stay forever, and he doesn't want to leave. Can what they've rebuilt last?
I enjoyed the way this one played out. The emotion between Brian and Caitlin was palpable. Their biggest misunderstanding was so believable, it was like playing a movie in my mind.

Unplanned is a heartfelt second‑chance romance set in Poplar Springs. Caitlin, back in town after heartbreak and financial struggles, unexpectedly reconnects with Brian, her college love who is now the sheriff. What begins as a chance encounter grows into a journey of rediscovery, healing, and facing family drama, all while navigating an unplanned pregnancy that forces them to confront their past and future. With strong, believable characters and plenty of small‑town warmth, Mary Sue Jackson delivers a sweet, emotional story full of twists, resilience, and love. Emotional, romantic, and full of heart; a wonderful addition to the series.

Brian is the town sheriff, who having finished college had no thought or reason for not returning home. He has never wanted to leave his hometown. Caitlin couldn't wait to leave and after college had no intention to return. Several years later, she is back, forced by necessity than choice. They were in a college relationship, had different family life and an unexpected night of lust proves to be more than reminiscing. Circumstances are not ideal, so it would seem, but it provides them with a sense of belonging as things begin to close in...betrayal, loyalty, trust, loving, sharing, needs are some of the interference and measures the strengths and weaknesses in their relationship.

Book 5 of Poplar Springs story of Brian and Caitlin. I have to say I know what Caitlin went throw with her parents and can relate to how she felt going back home. I wanted to reach into these pages and tell her to be happy for herself, hold on to her man and love each other. As for Brian, that man is emotionally hurt and needed to talk it out, the town will be fine if he takes a night off. I think both these characters needed to heal and find a balance together. Seeing what they were losing and fighting for it was rewarding and inspirational. what an emotional page turning romance.

Book five of the Poplar Springs series is another phenomenal addition to the series. Once I started reading I had a hard time putting it down. Brian and Caitlin are well written, compelling and complicated, it has a great plot and plenty of twists with added supporting characters. This well developed, heartwarming story keeps us turning the pages with its witty banter and dialogue, trust issues, and strong chemistry. I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. Can't wait to read more form this another. Love the whole series. Received this review copy from the author via Booksprout and this is my honest opinion.
The story follows two characters who are both navigating emotional challenges from their pasts, and I loved how their struggles felt authentic and relatable. The small-town setting was beautifully written and gave the story a warm, cozy backdrop that made me want to linger in its pages. The plot was well done, with a nice balance of tension and tenderness. It unfolded at just the right pace to keep me engaged without feeling rushed.
Both main characters had great personal growth arcs, and their journey to reconnect felt genuine and earned. The ending was sweet and delivered the happy resolution I was hoping for.
This is book 5 in Jackson's Poplar Springs series. A wonderful addition to this series that can be read as a standalone. A small-town, second chance romance that features main characters Brian and Caitlin. I love how these characters develop and how we realize the character traits that need to be worked through in order for them to find a lasting ever after love. This book is well balanced with sweet romance as well as some steam and a lot of emotions. A great read that will captivate and please from start to finish!

Did not realize this was the fifth in a series. But with a dreamy cover and a hated trope that I not so secretly love, that didn't stop me from diving right in!
Very clearly part of a series and it would have been very beneficial to have read the others but overall this was a fine one sitting read. I would have loved a bit more depth on the heavier issues and some flashbacks to how Caitlin and Brian initially got together and what tore them apart originally but overall would love to try another book from this author!

Brian is Poplar Springs sheriff and think she needs to care for everything and everyone in the town. Caitlin is the love he lost and he got the chance to spend one more night with her during a rare evening that he went to a bar away from the town. She never planned on coming back to his town until her ex stole from her and a friend called on her to help. Now Caitlin is back and unbeknownst to Brian was going to be his house guest.

Brian is a sheriff in Poplar, Caitlin was his love that left for the big city. But now she’s back. Broke and nowhere to go. So she ends up at his place in the spare bedroom. He’s not exactly happy, as he still loves her and is having issues with her being there. She’s working in a diner trying to save up money and leave. But one thing leads to another, and Caitlin tells him she’s pregnant. This story flowed in the most beautiful way. The way they came back together, and now a baby on the way. I loved this story. It was so sweet and I really enjoyed it.
Definitely need to grab the tissues for this emotional second chance story. Brian and Caitlin’s reconnection was a tough but beautiful journey due to their personal issues. I was rooting for their growth both personally and as a couple. Such a heartfelt love story filled with small town vibe, banter, vulnerability, family drama, and a twist that changes their lives. Loved every minute of this well written addition to this wonderful series.

Book 5 of the Poplar Springs series. Can be read as a standalone.
'But he belongs to this town. And I’ve never belonged anywhere.'
The characters drove the storyline and they were so very appealing and likeable and complicated and perfectly steamy together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building continues to excel and impress. All in all a great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.
