A law of nature Bryce has seen time and time again in his life. Yet, now he finds himself dragged into the circles of nobility in Witchbrook while acting as a bodyguard for Princess Thea Volson. Watching her warnings about her uncle fall on the deaf ears of the other nobles.
Still, that old lesson remains true as Harold Volson sets his sights on Witchbrook and a deadly monster that should be nowhere near the city hunts along its edges. Bryce must deal with both, all while a feral Goddess whispers in his ear with her own set of lethal demands. The coming fight will force him to make tough choices to keep himself and his pack alive.
An avid reader with a fondness for Fantasy, Sci-fi, and HaremLit Books. I strive to write interesting worlds and characters like those that drew me to these genres. My debut book, Exile: De'Vas Chronicles Book 1, is my aim to achieve that goal. I hope you enjoy the book and the others to come in the future.
This is book #3 in this series so let’s review a bit: If you are a certain type of mage (and mages come with all sorts of backgrounds and natures) you are able to assume one or more of the attributes of the monsters you best in combat.
Bryce, the Feral Mage, has accumulated an entourage by the close of book #2. Vex, Janna, and now, Alice, Vera, and several others, each with separate motivations.
Bryce is “hired” to keep a princess safe and that is not in the interest of several factions who either want to use her for their own purposes or see to her death.
It is not just happenstance that Bryce’s support group are all female. And, Kilgore, sees to it that they are almost all sexually attracted to him and will act on that attraction. I appreciate that those sexual encounters are kept to discrete chapters that can be skipped without any loss of the plot.
Kilgore seems to take inspiration from Robert Browning in letting his “reach exceed his grasp” as he moves further into his world building. Some of it (particularly some of the monsters and their abilities) are well done but his storytelling skills could be better and his world seems more a pastiche of things he liked in other authors' stories.
He is continuing to expand Bryce’s exploits but I find this a case of diminishing returns.
Another good volume. The plot is moving along nicely and villains aren’t overstaying their welcome. Although, I am left wondering: what happened to Jack and Carlos? Also, Bellamy needs to hurry up and make a decision about what she wants. Anyway, looking forward to starting the next arc.
Relatively short, but a good read which moved well. Things get pretty dire and not everyone makes it out, but the bigger threat is next on the horizon. I'm not sure how the progression system works here, as it isn't gamelit, but it looks like it's up to how much the gods are backing their champions.
I loved the first two books, and here's more! Great sword and sorcery fantasy story.
Unfortunately, as a write this, book 4 is not out, and while the series does not end on a cliffhanger (which I appreciate!) the story is still gripping and I am left wishing I could just keep reading and find out what happens next.
Side note, but the author does a very good job of setting up an escalating series of threats that lead into each other, without embracing rampant power inflation, deux ex machina (either saving the protagonists when they "should" have died, or introducing a new thread when they "should" be safe), or making it feel like plot arcs don't matter because they just bring the plot back to where it was when it started, rather than progressing it. Not so here!
Pretty disappointing overall. At almost feels like Vex becomes dumber and more one dimensional as the series progresses. The MC spends the book trying to surrender as quickly as possible at every confrontation. So many characters were removed or put in the background that when combined with the behavior changes I just don't care what happens anymore. Worst Chase Kilgore book by far.
That was one amazing roller-coaster, culminating in one of the best sieges I've read for an hlit novel. Can't wait to see if the oni will be one of the pack too(I sure hope so) but as things stand our champion may soon embark on the road of conquest. Here's hoping a certain red eyed goddess is still liking him by the end of it all.
The story took a major leap forward and we had so cool things come out a left field and some very interesting things pop up in the ending. Our characters continue to be amazingly written, spice is fantastic, and action/fighting scenes are also well written. I'm looking forward to the next one
Wow, this is so good. I don't know if it's just the low exceptions for this genre or what, but the writing, characters, plot, and chemistry just works so well for this series. I think it might be getting better with each book. Also super appreciate the author including the glossary of characters at the start.
A good story with solid world-building, where the main character isn’t overpowered (well, maybe a little). Most importantly, he’s not written as a clueless man who fails to notice when women are interested in him.
I love the feeling of this series. All the characters feel very genuine. Loved the battle near the end. Can’t wait to see how this series unfolds. Lots of development in this book. Looking forward to the next book!
Solid continuation of the story, as we wrap and advance the two major story arcs, while setting up the true central conflict of the series. The harem element continues to be rather peripheral, with only a couple of easily skippable sex scenes and much less tail swishing than in previous books.
The first book had all developed characters and a very interesting story. This one has foregone all of that. The harem characters have become dependant and flat, and the story feels like an afterthought. This is just another harem book that forgot it needed a story.
