Well, friends… I kind of hated it. I know I can be very critical of NR’s newer work, so I try really hard to separate the love I once had for her books from what she’s writing now. Either I’ve changed or she has, but we just don’t mesh the way we used to. Usually, if I stop comparing, I can still enjoy the story. That was not the case here. This book initially hooked me with an interesting premise and some genuinely lovely characters, but by around the 60% mark it was clearly spinning its wheels. I stopped reading and skimmed to the end - and wow, am I glad I did. The main leads don’t even meet until the 90% mark, and the book ends on a deeply anticlimactic cliffhanger.
I don’t mind stories where the main characters spend time developing separately before meeting, whether in romance or in a group/party setting. But it has to go somewhere. There needs to be a reason for the journey. Here, it felt like most of the characters remained static unless an “action” sequence forced movement. Aside from the male lead, none of them felt particularly fleshed out or realistic. Honestly, the food they ate and the places they visited received as much, if not more, attention than the romance, friendships, or even the magic system. I was still willing to overlook a lot and give the second book a chance… right up until that ridiculous cliffhanger. That was the final nail in the coffin for me.

This story follows her journey from her first life, where she is accused of witchcraft and finds comfort from pair of witch sisters who are imprisoned with her. They saw her innocence and light and decided to share their power with her in their final moments together.
From that moment on they live hundreds of lives together. Coming to the present where on her 13th birthday, Neve wakes up to once again learn of her powers. Due to the circumstance in which she gained power but lost her life, Neve is chosen with stopping a growing darkness. The same darkness responsible for her death 300 years ago. Her path leads her to grow her strength and skills to win this war. Thankfully, she knows she is not alone. Not only do her aunts stand beside her, but she dreams of a young man whose life is intertwined with hers and has been for centuries.
I had such high hopes for this book and was sadly disappointed. I don't know how to explain it other than this was the slowest book that also felt rushed. So many parts of this book dragged on until suddenly, out of nowhere, something wild would happen. It came across really patchy for this reason. It is told through third person, multiple POVs which also wasn't explained you just needed to figure out whose point of view it was based on how they thought/talked.

My Thoughts
This story deals with past lives that shape events in the characters present life and as each new chapter plays out the reader learns right along with Neve and Caden how dangerous their mutual enemy is and also how powerful the “light” is against the “dark”.
Alternating timelines and alternating points of view along with how much time is spent developing each new step that takes us closer to the finale brings at time frustration when 1 step forward takes 2 steps back, so to speak.
Last time I got chills when I finished a story was a long time ago.
I had chills run through me when I read the ending of this book and it is going to be a hard wait before I will hopefully get to read the second and third books.

This was classic Nora Roberts book- total happy go lucky characters and kind a lot of filler. Heavy family themes. It definitely dragged on towards the end, I was like come on get on with it. But a nice chill read and it was super cool to have an advance reader copy!

If you've read Nora Roberts and you enjoy her writing style. Especially for her Magical Reaslim trilogies, you'll enjoy this one. I loved it. The characters have depth and history. They grow throughout the story. It's age-appropriate as we start off with a thirteen-year-old. Each setting that they travel to or live in is described so well. The scenery and the locals. It brings a great picture to the mind's eye. I always want to visit Ireland after reading her books. The story itself and how things unfold are done well; I kept thinking, NOW the two main characters are finally going to meet up or find the items they were tasked with collecting. Each chapter built up well, with all the characters still living their lives.
At 432 pages, this took me one day to read. I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy because what a cliffhanger.

THOUGHTS: I love Nora Roberts and this book is one of the reasons why. It’s a great start to a new fantasy trilogy that crosses several centuries. The main character is an indentured servant in the late 1600s to a well-to-do family on Piety Island. On her thirteenth birthday, she is accused of being a witch even though she is innocent. Branded and thrown into jail with two women who really are witches and who comfort her before their hanging. What they don’t see happening is a young man rushing in to combine his magic with the women, making Niamh a witch just before her death. Fast forward 300 years to Neve (previously Niamh) living with her aunts (the two witches) and running a tourist shop of “magical” items in the small town on Piety Island. They have been together through multiple lifetimes, but this time is different. She has been tasked by The First to find three objects and meet with the man who is sworn to protect her in order to thwart the nasty witch who wants to end them all. I love that Neve is a strong girl who stands up for herself and doesn’t sit around waiting for her “prince” to come save her. She’s someone who is strong and smart and decisive. Good for her. And I love the aunts! They’re so different, and yet work well together.
While a tad slow in parts, the story is good in that it blends Neve’s past and her present really well. And she keeps missing her meeting with the protector in a lot of places. They don’t actually physically meet until the last couple of chapters! And the definite cliffhanger ending is a definite frustration. So now I have to wait for the next book – and then the next one after that to find out what happens!

The first Nora Roberts book I ever read was "The Reef." I was home with the flu in high school, and my mom's best friend bought it for me to help pass the time. I did not become a huge Nora Roberts fan until after college, but once I did, I started marking every new release on my calendar. I usually wait until the third book of one of her trilogies is available so I can read the entire series at once. Even so, I was far too excited about the new "A Coven of Three" series to pass up the opportunity to read the first book early.
One thing Nora Roberts has always done exceptionally well is write stories centered around Ireland and magic, so combining those two elements felt like the perfect fit. I quickly became invested in both Neve and Caden. My heart went out to Neve from the very beginning, and I loved getting to watch her grow as she slowly came to understand both her abilities and the enormous responsibility placed before her. Caden was just as easy to root for, and I found myself becoming attached to his entire family. There is one member of his family in particular who completely captured my attention, and I cannot wait to learn more about him in the next books.
I also appreciated the way this story unfolds over several years. On paper, that could have felt rushed, but Nora Roberts has a way of making those transitions feel completely natural. Every stage of Neve and Caden's journey added another layer to the story, and I found myself becoming more invested with every chapter. The fantasy, family relationships, romance, and suspense blended together in exactly the way I have come to expect from her books.
Overall, I thought this was an outstanding start to a new trilogy. I will say this without spoiling anything: be prepared for a major cliffhanger. I turned the final page wishing I already had book two in my hands. The wait is going to be a long one, but if the rest of the series is anything like this first installment, it will absolutely be worth it.

So, first off, I am a HUGE Nora Roberts fan. I think she is one of the best writers of all time.
I have noticed lately that some of her trilogies are not as good as I expected. Not because of the writing, but because of the content. I'm worried Birth of the Witch is going to be one of those trilogies.
Let me explain. Lately the trilogies that follow one MC seem to get bogged down in filler. The Lost Rings trilogy is a great example of that. Now, I appreciate the time that is taken to develop the characters. I loved seeing Caden's POV and there was a lot of background information and *stuff* (no spoilers) to integrate. But there was also a lot of details that aren't necessary. Seeing a day in the life here there is great, especially when it strengthens bonds between characters or fills out supporting characters. I also understand the need for time to pass, but too much of this feels like drudgery. No matter how well written, after a while, it gets a bit boring.
The story does feel fresh, but again, the quests so far haven't been that demanding. It's mostly been the MCs waiting. If the next two books follow this one in page length, there are a lot of pages to fill and frankly, at this point, it doesn't seem like enough story is left.
Oh, I was shocked that the story ended on a cliffhanger! That's very unusual for NR.
I will never discourage anyone from reading any book that catches their eye. And I certainly won't discourage anyone from trying a NR book, just know, IMO this one isn't her strongest.

When Netgalley offers a Nora Roberts book, I pounce on it! I have a weakness for Nora Roberts' fantasy trilogies, and this was such a strong first book.

Neve uses clues from her past lives to help aid her in her quest, and dreams at night of the young man whose eyes met hers for a fateful moment, centuries ago.
This book was such a ride, from start to finish. It took its time introducing us to our Chosen One, Neve; her loving aunts, Elspeth and Dorcas; and the man who is sworn to protect her, Caden.
While some parts dragged a little bit for me, I liked that the characters and their dynamic lives were well-established. It really brought home just what is at stake, should Neve fail in her task. I loved the blending of past lives and how they played a role in the present. The ending was so climactic, and she ends on one hell of a cliffhanger!
This was a solid start to a new fantasy trilogy and I'll spend the next YEAR pining helplessly for book 2.

This book was such a ride, from start to finish. It took its time introducing us to our Chosen One, Neve; her loving aunts, Elspeth and Dorcas; and the man who is sworn to protect her, Caden.
While some parts dragged a little bit for me, I liked that the characters and their dynamic lives were well-established. It really brought home just what is at stake, should Neve fail in her task. I loved the blending of past lives and how they played a role in the present. The ending was so climactic, and she ends on one hell of a cliffhanger!
This was a solid start to a new fantasy trilogy and I'll spend the next YEAR pining helplessly for book 2.

“Birth of a Witch”, the first book of a trilogy is fascinating and captivating that will have you reading nonstop to find out what happens. This book has plenty of magic, love of family, romance and destiny. What Roberts does best is her character development, which is highlighted in this book especially with Neve and her aunts. She always delivers a moving and engaging story that draws you in no matter what genre she is writing in. Roberts also does a great job in blending Neve’s past and present, and her cliffhanger ending. What can I say but that it will leave you frustrated waiting for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.

Another paranormal romance trilogy from Nora. And boy does she love her witches. This one is pretty different from her other witch books and trilogies. Neve has lived a bunch of lives as a witch until the present day but she is a created witch from her first life when the witch trials were running rampant among the puritans in North America. A very interesting concept. The whole book had massive Practical Magic movie vibes. Which I loved.
In present day we get teenaged Neve coming into her power and receiving a go find witch stuff quest from the "First Witch". Classic Nora Roberts magic at its absolute best.Nora Roberts does it again! Birth of the Witch hooked me from the very first page with its rich lore, powerful sisterhood, and deep family ties. The atmospheric world-building masterfully transitions from the dark, centuries-old history of Piety Island to the present day, making the creeping danger feel completely real. Neve McShane is an incredible protagonist. Watching her discover her aunts' secrets, step into her power, and connect with her ancestry is absolutely thrilling. The magic feels vibrant, the stakes are high, and the emotional character journeys are flawlessly executed.What truly elevates this story is the brilliant dynamic between the characters, particularly Neve and Caden. The only thing I don't like about this novel is having to wait for the next in this triology. Nora Roberts have woven another magical story of witches, magic, and Ireland weaving a bit of the US via Boston, Salem into the fold, Anyone that enjoys her mystical triologies will definitely be hooked on this new triology. The setting starts with Piety Island 1600s and Puritans and suspected witches, Niamh an orphaned servant girl accussed of witch craft with two real witches. Moves quickly into this century laying the grounds for the story to knit the reader into a fast paed story that will keep turning those pages. Neve (change on the name throughout the centuries she starts as Niamh), her aunts (the witches that have been with Niamh since the beginning are still on Piety Island having a shop of their own and making a living. Caden, a male witch who also has been on a quest since that fateful day learns that his and Neve's paths are entertwined. I loved the tightknit family of Caden's, the success of both main characters, the bonds of Neve and her aunts and of course the familiar's Maggie and Mac. I truly give this 3.5 stars as I did like it for the most part, but that ending...
Anyhow, this new series remind me of the cousins o'dwyer trilogy, in that vein, other readers will also enjoy it. It had the usual pretty language, pretty landscapes and paranormal feel to it. It would definitely be a good read for Halloween.
The length of this book is considerable, with most of it laying the groundwork for future books. At times, I felt as if some of it could have been left out but this is how Roberts writes, as I've come to expect. It is very detailed and paints a vivid picture in the minds of the readers.
Then I thought that even with the potential of bad or evil coming one still has to live their life and experience moments of joy and normalcy. You cannot exactly just live your life on edge waiting for the for the bad thing to happen and miss out on living. That path I could recognize and understand.
I appreciated the characters and as such this is why the buildup to the ending left me... disappointed.
Overall, I look forward to the next book in the trilogy. Roberts has a flowery but intense writing style and. Can weave a story like the veteran that she is.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. I love NR. Always have I have read so many of her books and this is the lowest reviews I’ve given. The story is great I’m not going to lie. If you don’t read a lot of her books this is awesome but if you’re like me and do, this one reads very similar to other books. I almost felt like I had read this one before. The story line is pretty similar in feeling to some of her other witchy stories. Ofc it was a little different to for this scene but I felt it had a lot of similar vibes to some of her other trilogy’s. Not a whole lot happened until past the halfway mark and then it was an up and down kind of ride. The story feels like it spent a great deal of time building the plot for future books. Could have just been a bit shorter and made a novella to set the stage.
I did feel a lot of angst at the end with the cliffhanger after waiting the whole book for something to happen. Honestly at this point I feel like we should have an entire book on Imogen. That would be an interesting view. Take the villain side and tell that story. I will read the next and the next and the next because I am a NR fan but hoping the next plays a bit better.

This book features Neve, a young woman in her mid-twenties who is in business with her aunts and can remember bits and pieces or several previous lives dating back to the mid-1600s.
The other lead character is Caden. He also is able to recall pieces of lives previously lived starting in the mid-1600s.
As with all Nora Roberts’ trilogies I tell myself that I need to wait for all three books to be able to read them one right after another. But I’ve never been able to wait. This book is no different. The hook is set from the first page and it never lets go. The characters are wonderfully developed and engaging. You dislike the ones you’re meant to, and you love the ones you are supposed to love. And family shines brightly at the core of the story. The scenes are described perfectly and enable the reader to see what the character sees and feel what the character feels. I read this entire book in less than a day. I truly couldn’t put it down and was absolutely crushed when I came to the end. Please don’t skip this trilogy. I believe it will be one of Ms. Roberts’ best.

The perspectives shift, telling parallel stories, and we know both have a mission, but not how or where they will meet each other in this lifetime.

This is my second read from Nora Roberts and this one blew me away. I loved the characters, I loved the storyline and I love that there will be more to this! I cant wait for the next book to come out.

Caden is a fascinating protagonist; the duality of his daily / nightly professional life as a pub owner contrasted with his obsession of finding a certain girl made it impossible to look away from. The development of his arc is handled with such care that every discovery feels earned and every danger feels real.
As for the ending—it was an absolute emotional rollercoaster. The final chapters left me breathless and reeling, desperate for more. I need the sequel as soon as humanly possible!

Very similar to the Year One trilogy only without the plague. Brings in the Salem Witch Trials instead and uses past lives to tell the story of Neve, her aunts, and Caden, who are all connected to a fateful night over 350 years earlier. As with Year One, the two main characters have a bond through magic and see each other in dreams. As in Year One, each one has a quest to find certain magical objects that will help them defeat the evil that infects people. As in Year One, there are both magical and non-magical people connected to both that play a role in their lives. Birth of a Witch, though, focuses on witches only - no shape shifters, elves or fairies so far. It took a really long time to have Neve and Caden meet and of course, shortly thereafter, the book ends on a cliffhanger. It dragged a little here and there, but overall it was a solid, quick read typical of a Nora Roberts book. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.

I have enjoyed Nora Roberts books since I was a teenager. This book started at slow pace but then moved at a moderate pace throughout the rest of the book but I was fully engaged the entire time. As I think with most series/trilogy this book set the background and the main story arc. This book is the dual points of view of Neve McShane and Caden Quinn. This book has reincarnated witch families. I want this be completely spoiler free but I will say it does go back to the time frame of the Salem witch trials. This book does end in one huge cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I absolutely loved this book.I am never disappointed by a Nora Roberts book. I highly recommend this book if you like a good witch book.

The Salem witch trials spread rapidly and spread to Piety Island , wrongly accuse Niarrah would learn, she would find comfort with the weavers that were kind to her. They would all hang together, they would all see the boy that ran after the cart that took them to the hanging tree...
Now three hundred years later Neve, McShane and her "aunts" Dorcas and Elspett with their magic,their business of weaving, lotions and such are all bound together. Then there's always the boy in the deams. Enter Calden, He dreams about her, they keep missing each other. We go the whole gambit of his family the back and forth its a lot. You feel like will they ever get there??? I liked the book, I know she was weaving a story, not saying I didn't like like the book just saying it was a bit much. Read the book

Nora Roberts always puts together an enjoyable trilogy with a bit of fantasy mixed in. Witches are a little harder for me to relate to, but it didn’t keep me from binging the book!
One of the best things about this book was the setting on the fictitious island of Piety. I could easily picture myself strolling the quaint streets of the downtown and enjoying the beauty of the island. I absolutely loved the visits to Ireland and the large Quinn family unit. Reading about Neve’s past made me want to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials. Also, the two shops and the crafting gave me a renewed appreciation for handmade items. My only complaint is ending on a big cliffhanger and having to wait a year for the next installment!

What a powerful first book of a trilogy. Neve was caught up in the 1600's by the witch hunts and is tried and hung. At the last possible moment she is created to a witch. She was just a teenager at the time and quite innocent. She then lives many life times with the two women that were hung with her as they were witches. She knows she is destined for something greater along with a young man that she has not met in this life time. The story moves along quickly and is very entertaining. I read way too long into the night. There was family dynamics, adventure, learning skills , the start of a relationship and then the ending where you say Oh NOOOO. If you like or love Nora Roberts' trilogy, pick this one up It's wonderful

Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors, and her fantasy books are always a treat. Birth of the Witch was no exception. It's such a fun mix of reincarnation, magic, romance, and some seriously creepy evil.
The characters are all interesting and well developed, and I loved getting to see how they were connected across multiple lifetimes. The story switches between the tragic past, where witches were burned at the stake, and the present day, where those same souls have been reincarnated and are still fighting the evil that's followed them through the centuries. I thought the way Roberts slowly revealed bits and pieces of their past lives was really well done.
The villains are truly awful in the best way. I hated every time they showed up because they felt like such a real threat. And that ending... what a cliffhanger! I need the next book immediately.

I have loved Nora Roberts’ books since I was 16 years old and I still read every single one she comes out with and I never regret it. This one is absolutely no different, I loved every second of it. Neve is one of the best fmcs I’ve read in a while, she is smart and resilient and I loved this set up for her. Caden is great too, and his relationship with his family is beautiful.
This is definitely a slow burn series, this first book actually kind of reminds me of book 1 in The Chronicles of The One series in that it is mostly setting up the story and getting to know the main characters separately, not focusing on any romance yet. I’ll be thinking about that ending until I can get my hands on book 2.

The first of a new trilogy, Birth of the Witch, got my attention from the first line- “She wasn’t a witch until they hanged her.”
The story follows Niamh McShane thru her many lifetimes until the present where she is tasked to find 3 magical items. These items will assist in her inevitable confrontation with the evil witch. She is also destined to meet the boy who helped her all those lifetimes ago. If I had a complaint this would be it, Niamh/Neve don’t actually meet Caden until the story is 90% over and then there’s a major cliffhanger. Gahhh!
Nora Roberts’s trilogy is worth the wait though.
This title is scheduled for release on November 17th, 2026.
