In a fractured realm ruled by warring noble Houses and the tyrannical Prime, the most coveted power lies in god-shards - divine fragments that grant extraordinary abilities to those who possess them.

Revel’s brother was murdered in pursuit of one.

A DEADLY GAME.

For avenging him, Revel’s life is on the line. Forced into a treacherous bargain, she must compete in the Call - a bloody contest of heirs vying for the throne - on behalf of her enemies, and assassinate the realm’s most formidable alchemist, the Warbringer.

Victory means her family’s freedom. Failure means death.

A MONSTROUS POWER.

The Prime sets the heirs on a brutal race to find the god-shard that could shift the balance of the realms. Everyone wants the win, but Revel just wants the kill. Except, the Warbringer isn’t the monster she was promised. Bound by secrets of his own, he is as dangerous as he is disarming.

⋅˚₊‧ ୨ 𝒫𝓇𝑒-𝓇𝑒𝒶𝒹 (2/20/2026): ୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅ GUESS WHO GOT THE ARC EARLY?! I’m SO eternally grateful to Tina Mars for letting me onto her ARC team for her debut novel so I get to read this EARLY! She was one of the very first people I followed on my Bookstagram account last June and when I found out she was releasing her debut novel, I knew I wanted to read it. Now it’s becoming a reality and I’m so thankful for the opportunity!

(Everyone else will be able to request the ARC in about 2 months on NetGalley—at least on the US NetGalley website—so keep your eyes peeled around April!) Congratulations to everyone else who got the ARC through her ARC team or through the St. Martin’s Press Early Readers influencer program!🎉

Wowww I have so many thoughts but I think I'm going to keep this one simple. This was truly, at its heart, a story about a woman grappling with whether or not she is worthy of love. Our fmc, Revel, was just used in so many wrong ways by the people who are supposed to treasure you the most that it, understandably, skewed her idea of love and worth. Love became something conditional to Revel. Something that had to be earned and as we journey with her to find the night shard, we also journey together as she fights to come to the realization that she is, in fact, worthy of love. She's got a long way to go but she definitely made some huge strides by the end of this story. Axus, our MMC, is such a complicated character but some of my favorite moments in this book were him. He is so protective. Willing to sacrifice for her every comfort. He is down had for Revel and I'm down bad for him. I swooned and melted for this man. He is so freaking complicated though. Makes me want to tear me hair out! The end of this book was such a wild ride. There were some epic revelations, some that might gut you.. Because they certainly gutted me! The path for book two was laid down hard! I cannot imagine how this story will unwind itself but I'm looking forward to finding out! Thank you to Tina Mars, Saturday books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to arc read This Wretched Alchemy. It was a highly anticipated read for me and I'm so glad I was able to get my eyes on this arc!

This Wretched Alchemy has taken me on a wild ride. Revel wants to save her family. She will do anything to protect them, even if that means dying. When forced into the Call by the Prime, Revel may be in for more than she can handle. Faced with difficult decisions and other scions that want her dead, she will have to face the villain within to make it out alive.

Tina Mars writes poetry on the page. Her visuals are descriptive and lyrical. The reader becomes entranced in Revel's mind and experiences all the emotional trauma she lives with. The story opens with politics and deadly trials that twist and turn from page one. Each character has layers of hidden agendas and lies they hide behind. Tina crafted a main female character who struggles with basic principles of love and what it means to be loved. The main male character is guided by someone else's beliefs and wrestles with what it means to just be.

Beyond the world building and main characters, Tina devoted time to creating side characters that leap off the page. She entwines her culture and heritage within the creatures and lore throughout the entire book. Plus an animal side kick you are bound to love. I feel so incredibly lucky to get this book so early from Tina and her team. I can't wait for more readers to be ruined.

***REVIEW OF EARLY ACCESS NETGALLEY eARC***

So, I have been dying to read this book since Tina had announced it on her IG (before she changed her handle!) and was extremeley to be chosen as an early ARC reader! I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters were well-rounded and progressed throughout the story's journey. Revel was pretty bad ass, and I liked that she knew she was badass, but also had a vulnerability to her, Her weakness and strengths were portrayed througout the story, making her relatable and also not one of those overpowered FMC's.

The Enemies to lovers trope was done with enough tension that I could not stop reading. I'm a sucker for tension, and this was full of it. The world building was creative, and I loved the take on alchemy.

I would love to go on but no spoilers LOL but I will just end with saying I am excited for book 2, because that ending? That last 100 pages? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

REVIEW:
TIna Mars.

Ms. Tina FREAKING Mars.
Light of my life.
Fire of my soul.

This could not have been your debut novel, because what was THAT?

I swear, this is the best romantasy book I've read this year and we're only on the first quarter. I just know that nothing will ever top THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY for me. This debut novel is IT.

For a long while, I've followed the author before she was an author and when news of her writing was shared, I could not get even more ecstatic. And my vibes was correct. I've connected to this book long before I got an early copy because of how strongly I felt about the characters upon first introduction, the representation, and just how Tina shows time and again how she writes about or write in the influence of the most important things that matter to her--which are also the things that matter the most to me.

THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY is set in the realm of Ryumere where alchemy is the main form of magic. This kind of magic system is so dear to me because of how much I've loved FMAB and how it affected me when I was little; it was one of the stories that raised me. THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY gave me that same feeling I had when watching FMAB not just because of the magic system, but also because it gave me the same sense of comfort and warmth, like coming back home.

The magic system is one of the most intricate one I've read in a fantasy novel, and I was truly impressed by how it was written. There is an equal division of exposition and on-page scenes of showing how the magic works, and I liked that a lot. Tina knew when to apply exposition and execute it in an effortless way, like in a memory being remembered by a character but that memory is also a huge part of the character's storyline so it was not like a filler or boring or written just so exposition could happen. There's a lot of brilliant ways Tina did this and this is why I was so floored, mouth-opened, jaw hanging on the ground impressed that this is her debut novel because my queen most definitely did not play.

Another element I really fell in love with is the world building, It was so rich and real, like George R.R. Martin's ASOIAF series. The world was vast and Tina did amazing with sprinkling facts and knowledge all throughout the story regarding the different cultures, traditions, religions, and histories of each nation. Even myths and lores, they were all woven into the story that made THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY a lived-in world with real people and real events and that definitely elevated my reading experience. I got really excited about the creatures and the in-world text because dayumn. Miss Tina Mars has also blessed us with her magical poetry found in epigraphs and embedded in the story as well. This book just has everything and it's overflowing while also making everything go together smoothly and seamlessly. I really loved the Roman and Japanese influences as well.

Tina also had talent for writing action scenes that read like movies in my head. The words were not clumpy and there's so much going on while the verbiage or wording was kept to a minimum--just enough to show plenty without over explaining to take away from the thrill. THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY's fight scenes are one of the best I've ever read. I was always immersed.

Now, the characters.

My absolute favorite part of this book.

Revel is my new favorite fmc and I wanna be her when I grow up. She's smart and funny and witty. Sassy and hot-headed and tender-hearted and I can see a reflection of myself in her. Revel is my salvation and revelation, a compassionate young woman who just wanted to belong. She is so eldest daughter coded, which was another thing I find we share and why I felt so connected with her. Whenever she thought herself not being enough, or having to conform to other's expectations to be seen or accepted, it tore at my heart. Our circumstances might not be similar, but I related to her experiences because I was also subjected to the same prejudices, judgments, and emotions. There had never been a character that resonated deeply with me until Revel Wyn. Honestly, I'm tearing up as I type this because of how raw her emotions were in the book and remembering them all too well.

I rooted for Revel, I screamed at her, chastised her, held her hand and comforted her. It's more like she understood me and all I ever wished and hoped and prayed for as she went on her adventure was she finds completeness and realize she's more than enough. That she see herself the way other people who loved her see her. As I was journeying with her, I have also come to the realization that these are the words I wished someone would've told me, that I could've learned to live by myself. Revel taught me to be brave and daring, she made me feel seen.

Then we have Dominus Axus Tassian, our Warbringer. Clouded with a dark past, it was impossible for him to open up and he wasn't that very good at communicating. This was such a real attribute for me because even at the beginning when he was described as invincible, he showed such humanity and flaws that endeared him to me. Much like Revel, he possessed characteristics that were so true and imperfect and I loved reading about him getting annoyed or being awkward or having a lapse in judgment, and learning about his bad decisions and all.

Revel and Axus were two characters that read like real people to me and even as I read the book and wanting to finish it immediately, I also found myself having a hard time letting go. They didn't know me, and they weren't real. Even if they were, I would be nothing but a stranger to them, but they're both precious to me. Their relationship developed in an organic way (from being true enemies literally physically fighting each other to how they were at the middle as the plot progresses), and Tina once again proved that she has written a magnificent romantasy. I could see THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY being the blueprint in the genre, a pioneer in slow-burn and enemies-to-lovers that gripped me from start to finish.

Not sure how much I could disclose here but I'm choosing to be extra careful because even I wouldn't want even tiniest hints to escape hehe every romantasy lover should read this book and discover its magnificence in their own because it was truly worth it and such a one-of-a-kind exhilarating reading experience. This is peak romantasy that should teach future books how to romantasy and also like E2L 101. The banter between our two hotties had me all giggling and kicking my feet, it was full of tension and could be at times really funny and adorable. Rev and Ax, or should I say mom and dad, are the it romantasy couple and I would ride until dawn with them and protect them with all my soul.

The other characters who were part of the gang were just as well-fleshed out as Revel and Axus. They all have distinct voices with different motivations that really played an interesting part in the plot and I especially love it when things get messy because of this lmfao Dex, oh Dex. He's one of my favorites and to know more about the other fascinating characters, you'll meet them all in the book.

What else am I missing? Ooh, the pacing! Every chapter is important and there were no filler scenes. I loved that about the writing. Clearly, there was a set purpose in each chapter and I think that's very well done in terms of planning and organizing. Each scene just keeps getting higher and higher too, like there were times when I thought I was reading peak scene like it was intense right? But then it won't even drop from there and it just went higher as I read more and more. It's like a playlist of songs that only kept on getting more and more energizing. That's what reading THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY felt like, actually.

And the end? My lips are sealed but it was one of the BEST, WELL CRAFTED endings I've ever read and now I don't know whether to laugh or cry that I got the e-galley and got to read and finish the book early because release date is in November (I've already pre-ordered the limited first print with all the gorgeous deluxe features in three different retailers because I live outside the US and one can never be sure when it comes to the security of their book package hehe) and book two is still in development so yeah I've been left in a steep cliff hanging with just my poor pinky. I'm not complaining; I am ever so grateful for the opportunity and this gift. I'm just saying that now my head is full of WRETCHED thoughts and this is going to be my condition until more news on book two are shared and until it's released. I'm gladly accepting and living in this torment because then I could reread THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY again and again and relive all the amazing scenes and my favorite parts and cry and have an existential crisis all over again.

Well, I guess, that is all. I hope I'm not forgetting anything but if I did, well. There's that.

TL;DR: THIS WRETCHED ALCHEMY IS MY ROMANTASY OF THE YEAR I WISH I COULD FUSE MY SOUL WITH IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH Join the Revelution hehe but no seriously. Please read this book on release so we could all gush about how we love it besties.

Happy reading everyone!

I was anticipating the hell out of this read ever since I discovered it was coming, and I have the honor of being an early ARC team member. Thank you to Tina Mars and Saturday Books!

I genuinely don’t even where to start to talk about this book; I’ve been sitting with my feelings for days. DAYS I tell you. I finished reading in less than 24 hours and I have officially been consumed and wholly possessed. Tina has put her all into this, and you can tell that This Wretched Alchemy is a true labor of love that she has poured into the pages. Eldest daughters, this one is for you. Readers, please prepare to be ruined in the best of ways.

If you’ve ever talked to me about books then you know that I THRIVE with a good world build, and I need it injected into my veins. I was SAT and fully immersed from the first page. That is not an easy thing for me, so when I say it I am so serious! I read so much fantasy that one thing is I genuinely do seek new magic systems, and this one is by far one of my favorites. As a girl that loves alchemy and has a deep obsession with all things crystals, nature, and esotericism, this magic system hits an incredibly deep itch in my brain that I didn’t even know I needed. It’s raw, it’s dark, it works incredibly different for everyone, and the use of it always comes with a cost of some kind.

The story follows Revel— the eldest daughter that has put the weight of the world on her back whilst harboring immense feelings of guilt for what has happened to her family. A major theme for Revel as she goes on this deadly journey is battling her sense of self worth, and her ability to take up space in the world. Is she not enough, is she TOO much? is she worthy of love, or is she the problem? where does she fit in? All of this internal struggle is happening and she is still an incredibly strong willed (but still soft hearted) stabby badass that is quite literally fighting for her life.

Her sense of self worth directly ties into the way she utilizes and learns to use her magic throughout the book, and seeing the pattern of her growth is such a beautiful and heartbreaking experience. Revel is 100% bringing Asian representation which is incredibly needed and refreshing to see, but Tina wrote her in a way that all women of color can feel seen and find something of themselves in her, and I truly admire that in a way that is soul deep.

Warbringer? Honestly don’t even get me started. I am DOWN BAD first of all; but I cannot say a lot about him without feeling like I’ll give away too much. Just know that his character is as equally layered as Revel, if not more. You will love to hate him, and hate that you love him. The ride is WILD.

And the SIDE CHARACTERS? SO. MANY. SIDE CHARACTERS. I love them ALL. I am in utopia. I will not name names yet to keep the mystique, but the pansexual panic is real and I have a deep obsession (How many times can I say obsessed in one review? Idk what to tell you, my feelings are very deep chile LMAO). When Tina says morally grey everyone, she meant that with her whole chesttttt I’m telling you. Every single character is so complex with layers, motives, and struggles of their own, and they’re all incredibly well written. I guarantee you’ll find someone to love… or to hate. Love hate? Hate love? You get it. It’s giving dysfunctional found family.

The world is so beautiful! it’s rich with culture and creatures that will have you both terrified and utterly thrilled; maybe both at the same time and on various occasions? Who knows. The politics, the lore, the tension that is felt in your bones, the YEARNING? The betrayal, the HEARTACHEEEE? THE PLOT TWISTS? I don’t think I took a breath for the last 5 chapters. Just yeah. This was an experience and my heart has been ripped out, my edges snatched. I am pleased, I am sat, and I need the next book yesterday.

When I tell you I think this was a masterpiece? I can’t even imagine how much better this will get when the final copy is out. This Wretched Alchemy will be available to be requested on NetGalley by the general public in roughly two months, and an official release date of November 10th! PLEASE get this on your immediate want to read list, it’s so incredibly worth it.

Ever since Tina dropped the news she was writing and releasing a book. I knew I just had to lurk. Not like Golem, and "My Precious," but more like a Minion obsessed with working for the biggest and baddest boss. It's so amazing to see Asian representation in the fantasy book world. Growing up, I always read about FMCs with brown or blonde hair, and fair skin. There were very few black haired, golden tone skin, almond shaped eyed FMCs that were baddies without being tied into Asian lore. So when she was looking for ARC readers, I knew I had to shoot my shot. I am so honored and thankful to have received an early copy. Thank you Tina Mars, NetGalley, and Saturday Books for the eARC!

Where do I start? I finished this book in less than 24 hours, and I'm still experiencing whiplash. 10 PM became 4 AM, and next thing I knew, the birds were singing and the sun was up all in my face.

Tina ripped my heart out chucked it on a silver platter, ruined what was left of my soul, threw my heart back in, and skipped along like nothing happened. And here I sit, former shell of myself.... waiting for therapist to schedule me in to her latest opening. And the crazy part? I would willingly let Tina do it all over again. Stockholm Syndrome? Maybe.

I am telling you now that this book is going to be a sensation when it's published later this year. I can see it now... #1 NY Times Bestseller AND USA Today Bestselling. And I am manifesting an animated series! If I could give TWA 5 million stars, I would.

You get this total baddie named Revel who literally checks off all of the Eldest Daughter criteria, needing to save her family, and take out some big bad guy named Warbringer. Now add in some found family, monsters, a deadly game between the Major and Minor houses, banter, some smexy nicknames, Orphy lurking here and there in every scene (my fave), oh-my-gosh-girl-you're-in-denial moments, plot twists, interracial relationship, eldest daughter coded moments, gut wrenching plot twists, gladiator vibes, tension that has you grinding your teeth, deities, trauma, and did I mention plot twists that gives you whiplash??

Tina is incredibly talented with her storytelling. She weaves in ordinary words, and takes seemingly mediocre scenes and turns them into something magical that touches all the five senses. It transports you there, and you experience it. She does it so well that I can confidently say... I would be taken out; K.O, by chapter 3. The world building, magic system, and side characters really beefs up the story, and keeps you invested till the end. I can only imagine what her plot cards look like because **cue standing ovation** everything was so well planned out. She gives you just enough to take you down one path, but yanks you back to question it all a few chapters later. Next thing you know, you're spiraling, and trying to piece the answers together, only to realize... crap... you'll have to wait till the next book to find out. Tina promises to ruin you, but you'll honestly come back for more.

I cannot wait for the rest of the world to read this book. You'll crash out hard, but just know that all the best things hurt.

Add this to your GoodReads now!! Better yet, run and pre-order it because you will not want to miss out.

Once the book is published, I'll come back here and add some of my favorite quotes so ya'll can spiral with me. ahhhahhhhhhhaaaa!

Ahhh what a privilege! Thank you so much for selecting me to receive my first ever ARC 🥺💖

I had anticipated reading this book for so long, that I was originally scared that I hyped it up too much in my head. But let me tell you that Tina did not disappoint! The book is truly wonderful and leaves you in awe, wanting more. I’m not kidding .. I could write an essay on it. I’ve been drafting and erasing to try to reduce this review’s word count bc it’s 💫✨ THAT GOOD. 💫✨

I’m trying my best not to include spoilers 😬🫣

🍡 Themes
- Erasure and Revision of History
- Self Acceptance and Forgiveness
- Asian Mythology
- Roman History/Gladiators
- Race and Ethnicity
- Feminism
- There’s just so many! Do I keep going?!

🍡 General Thoughts
- The FMC is extremely witty and charismatic! She has a need to protect her family, although she hasn’t had their utmost acceptance. She is forced to navigate life and society as an “other.” There’s a lingering trauma of not truly belonging (whether that’s being less valued as a woman compared to her brother, or being less valued with two ethnicities). Handling the struggle of not being enough of one or the other to be fully accepted.

- Our love interest has a very different upbringing but is her most compatible counterpart in every way. Their banter is impeccable, and their “small” moments make it just as fun and great as their “big” moments. Tina did such an amazing job timing their conversations, growth and story. The characters actually had time to get to know each other!! This isn’t just a love at first sight, but this is also a day by day get to know you better 🥹😭😭😭 ***🎶Cue Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves🎶**

- On top of the two characters being amazing, I think one of the defining skills of an author is their ability to get you invested with side characters, and Tina did just that. I’m not thinking “yeah yeah yeah where’s John and Jane” but I’m genuinely asking to know more every second about the others involved. Wanting to connect their known house characteristics with their sigils, and wanting to know their background and development too!

- Her mix of Roman history and Asian mythology to world-build is so beautiful, the magic systems are complex and settings are crafted for each scene. I can’t wait for this book to be published and released, and to see the many creatives post their fan art because it’s an insanely colorful and different world.

🍡 Final Thoughts
The greatest reason this book is 5 stars for me is that it’s exposed me to different mythologies. Most popular fantasy books are based in Irish or Greek mythology but This Wretched Alchemy involves a good amount of Asian mythology, like the use of the Japanese kitsune! 😼🦊 I’m having to google and search up so much and I’m learning and devouring all this new knowledge. The world Tina writes of is so colorful, new, and exciting — it makes me want to read more bipoc authors and expose myself to new voices!

If you’ve been craving more fantasy and world-building, but also want to avoid some of the same redundancy that can happen in romantasy, well this book is FOR YOU ❤️‍🔥

Honestly, I didn’t expect to fall this hard, this fast, but This Wretched Alchemy grabbed me from the very first chapter and refused to let go! The world is sharp, dangerous, and utterly immersive, the magic feels alive, and every chapter left me desperate to see what would happen next.

What I loved:
💖 Revel’s journey of self discovery and acceptance, tied so beautifully to the alchemy at the core of the story.
🔥 A slow burn romance that hits hard - all tension, tenderness, and emotional devastation in the best possible way!
🌍 A breathtaking world packed with political messiness, belief systems, and layered histories that feel vivid and alive.
✨ Interwoven lyricism and poetry that gives the story this intense, philosophical pulse beneath everything.
"Love is not soft, nor kind. In its torrent I’m helpless. Impatient, love obliterates like a split-mouthed demon grinning. Cruel, love eviscerates An array that takes as much as it gives."
💫 And of course Orphy, the sassy sentient tattoo who I adored from the moment she appeared.

Revel’s growth is the absolute heart of the book for me. She starts weighed down by trauma and doubt, and watching her slowly step into her own strength feels honest, earned, and deeply satisfying. The way her struggles with identity and belonging mirror her journey through mastering alchemy is so thoughtfully done, and flows so naturally with the story.

“Accept it. Not for what it could be but for what it is.”

The exploration of her mixed heritage is handled with warmth and sincerity. Capturing the ache, the pressure, and the longing for belonging, but also celebrating the resilience and beauty in carving out your own place and embracing your differences.

"You were enough the moment you were born into this cursed world. If they can’t see it, that’s their cage, not your burden.”

The romance absolutely owned me. It’s slow, intense, and built on those tiny moments that feel like they change everything. Every glance, every touch carries real emotional gravity.

“I'd always wondered if some people were fated to unravel the world, while others were fated to stitch it back together. He was both for me.”

The world building is breathtaking. Layered, textured, and full of depth without ever feeling overwhelming. Societies, histories, and magic are woven in so naturally that the world feels alive in every corner, and I just kept wanting more.

By the time I reached the end, I was fully obsessed, emotionally shredded in the best way, and already desperate for the next book. This Wretched Alchemy is atmospheric, powerful, and utterly captivating.

Five stars without hesitation.
Tina, you are a literary queen! 👑

A huge THANK YOU for this opportunity!!!! I'm completely, utterly, irreversibly obsessed, and there's nothing you can do to save me now 🫶

I finally got This Wretched Alchemy in my hands and she was BEAUTIFUL, everything promised and more from the synopsis and bookstagram posts. Here we have a unique dark romantasy, in a world of powerful god shards, alchemical powers, and horrifying monsters and demons. Revel Wyn lives in constant grief and agony, though her spark and snark will never die. Her House Everos has been destroyed and she has spent the past year being tormented and honed as a weapon in House Bellatoris. She is then summoned for her final mission: to enter the Call, a competition for title of Heir Apparent, kill the Warbringer, and retrieve the mythical Night shard. Revel is thrown into a world of high class privilege, meeting characters from all the major and minor houses, and unexpectedly intrigued by the very Warbringer (Axus) himself before heading out into the dangerous Call.
There’s already so much I love about the premise, and one special thing to note is that Revel is Asian-coded, with a mixed race Kinari background that makes her set apart and discriminated against. Tina Mars spoke often about the importance of having ethnicity and experiences being represented in books and I wholeheartedly agree— it not only added depth to the story and character, but reflected appreciation for Japanese culture, with lovely linguistic and family tidbits throughout the story.
The rest of the book is fast-paced, constantly intriguing, and unearths the legends and stories of this world. I loved the unique premise and magic of transmuting properties, and I adored the emphasis on poetry, juxtaposing the dangerous and rough exteriors of our characters. The romance is for sure a slower burn, but it’s sweet and a bit spicy as Revel and Axus find shared moments of gentleness and intimacy as they face treacherous dangers.
Overall, I wish we dove deeper into this world and its history, political dynamics, and social tensions (I will never say no to a longer book!!). There were characters and legends that felt a bit shallow or vague, and I expected The Call to be much more complicated. And while I appreciated the relationship, it would have felt more natural if Revel and Axus had a stronger romantic foundation with sharper chemistry.
That being said, This Wretched Alchemy was an incredible debut fantasy! It was endlessly entertaining, action-packed, and had a delicious ending. Mars really laid the groundwork for an enticing sequel; that last chapter and epilogue was WILD and I need more information asap. I’m already thinking up new theories and getting excited to see how our beloved characters will grow!
Thank you thank you forever to Tina Mars and Saturday Books for this incredible ARC!! Can’t wait for the world to read it.

This book completely consumed me, in the best way 👀😍💕🖤😀😂🙃🥲🥹🥹🐉🥀🥀👀👀👀👀

The magic system in 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙒𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝘼𝙡𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙮 is honestly one of the most unique I’ve read in a long time. It feels intricate and intentional — not just something thrown in for aesthetic. The alchemy is layered, dangerous, and feels like it always comes with a cost. You can feel the weight of it in every scene, and that made the world-building so immersive.

And the slow burn???

Painfully. Deliciously. Slow.👀👌🥀😍

The tension builds so naturally that you don’t even realize how deep you’re in until every glance and every almost-touch starts to feel like it might set the world on fire. Nothing feels rushed. Every moment is earned. When the emotions hit, they hit.
It’s dark fantasy done right — morally gray energy, simmering tension, and magic that feels alive.

I loved the balance between the atmospheric world-building and the emotional depth. 👀😍🖤It gave me that “I need to sit and stare at the wall after finishing” kind of feeling.👀👀👀🖤

Tropes & Vibes

🥀 Slow burn romance
🥀 Morally gray love interest
🥀 “I shouldn’t want you”
🥀 Forbidden / dangerous connection
🥀 Power always comes with a price
🥀 Intricate alchemy-based magic
🥀 Secrets & hidden truths
🥀Tension-filled forced proximity
🥀 Touch her and die energy
🥀Angst. Angst. And more angst.
🥀Dark fantasy with dark academia undertones

Perfect for readers who love complex magic systems and romance that hurts before it heals.😍🖤

Thank you to the author and publisher for the e-ARC

This Wretched Alchemy is a gripping romantasy with rich, refreshing lore and a ruthlessly immersive world—the perfect gladiator-inspired setting. I absolutely love the alchemy system in this book. It’s a brilliant blend of science and magic, and it happy tickled my STEM brain. The way the story merges magic with material science warms my materials engineering heart.

The tension throughout is deliciously thicc, building seamlessly from scene to scene and keeping your pulse racing. The writing layers in suspense with carefully placed details that tease just enough to spark theories without giving too much away. And the slow, slowwww burn…*chef’s kiss*.

Revel is such a compelling main character. Tina writes her with so much personality that you immediately understand her fierce will to survive, balanced by her rebellious and tenacious spirit. She feels real—like someone I know, or even parts of myself. As a woman in STEM with an islander and biracial background, her story resonated deeply. Thank you for bringing meaningful representation into this space.

And those twists at the end…I did not see them coming!! I’m so so eager for book two and can’t wait to see where this story goes next.

Where is the 6⭐️ option?!
Tina has taken my heart and stomped on it.

This Wretched Alchemy is everything I could have wished for and more.

I have followed Tina for years as a trusted book reviewer, and when she announced she was writing a book, I eagerly awaited the opportunity to apply for early access. I wanted to be her cheerleader, and I was willing to grovel to do it. I applied, I emailed her publisher, I begged her personally, and I’m so thankful to say that I was chosen!

I started reading This Wretched Alchemy with the highest expectations, and I was blown away by how it succeeded and went above and beyond. Revel is a strong FMC who does everything she can for her family. She is selfless, brave, and very much not attracted to the Warbringer she is tasked to kill in order to free her family from captivity.

This Wretched Alchemy is a fully immersive world full of lore, morally grey characters, endearing side characters you want to befriend, an intelligent and heartwarming animal companion, tension so hot it burns, and plot twists that will have you staring at a wall for a solid hour after you finish the book.

Thank you, Tina Mars, Saturday Books, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley, for my early copy of This Wretched Alchemy, releasing November 10, 2026.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book absolutely ruined me in the best possible way. I told myself I was going to take my time with it… and then completely failed because it was just that good. I flew through it — and honestly? That cliffhanger might’ve been a personal attack because I need book two immediately.

From the very first page, I was locked in. There wasn’t a single lull, not one moment where my attention drifted. The pacing was relentless in the best way. This is exactly what I want a book to do to me — consume me, wreck me, and leave me feral for more.

The world-building was immersive, the deadly game had me stressed in all the right ways, and the characters (both main and side) felt so vivid and layered. The tension? Immaculate. And the poetry woven throughout? Absolutely stunning. I genuinely felt like I was inside this story.

I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted so many lines in a book before. My copy is basically glowing with tabs.

I am beyond grateful to have received an early e-ARC and to have been chosen for a physical copy as well — what an honor to experience this one early.

I am ruined. I am unwell. And I am already feral for the next book.

This book wrecked me in the best way.

Revel is the ultimate eldest daughter carrying her family on her back while navigating deadly house politics, monsters, and a villain who feels genuinely terrifying. She’s sharp, strategic, and emotionally layered, and watching her fight for both power and protection had me completely invested.

The charged glances, dangerous proximity, banter that feels like foreplay, and that delicious “we shouldn’t… but we absolutely will” energy. Their connection builds under pressure, in the middle of rivalries and brutal stakes, which makes every soft moment hit ten times harder. It’s intense, emotional, and just a little unhinged in the best way.

I don’t want to add too much for those who haven’t read yet and I will probably add to this review later but the found family, gladiator level stakes, twists that actually shock you, and romance that feels both forbidden and inevitable… I was hooked from start to finish.

I am so so grateful to Tina and this ARC. I’m a forever fan now!

Five stars. I’m still thinking about this.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 5

First of all, thank you to Saturday Books, NetGalley, and Tina Mars for the eARC!

I really enjoyed this debut novel, the magic system is based on transmutation and it’s something different that I haven’t read anything like it before, so that was super refreshing!

I loved the FMC Revel. She was fierce, feisty, and her internal commentary 💯. She reminds me of a more gladiator Aelin.

And then we have our MMC Axus with LAYERSSSS (I won’t go into spoilers) but trust me, not everything is as it seems with him.

I feel like they were drawn to one another instantly but it didn’t feel rushed like it sometimes does. Revel was definitely trying to ☠️ Axus but their tension and banter was perfect.

I loved the found family with the side characters (esp Chlo 🥹 )

Also, talk about a cliffhanger ending?!? Need book 2 immediately I have so many questions and need answers!!

I am UNWELL in the best way after finishing This Wretched Alchemy. This book grabbed me by the throat, whispered something wicked in my ear, and refused to let go. 😭✨

The magic system? Dark, twisted, and deliciously dangerous. Every spell felt like it cost something real — blood, loyalty, sanity — and I ate up every single consequence. I love when magic isn’t just sparkly power but something feral and corrupting, and this delivered.

And the tension?? The angst?? The morally gray energy?? Inject it into my veins. The relationships simmer and snap in all the best ways — trust is fragile, betrayal hits hard, and the emotional fallout is brutal. I was screaming at characters one minute and ready to defend them with my life the next.

The atmosphere deserves its own award. It’s moody, shadow-soaked, and thick with dread. You can practically taste the rot and ambition in the air. Every chapter made me feel like something terrible (and amazing) was about to happen.

If you love:
• Dark alchemy and magic with teeth
• High-stakes emotional chaos
• Slow-burn tension that hurts so good
• Characters who make questionable choices for understandable reasons

…this is your book.

I’m obsessed. I’m devastated. I need the next installment immediately. 🖤

This book will sit rent free with me forever. I am honestly overwhelmed and ecstatic about how amazing this story was. I am also stunned with that frigging ending. This book is nothing short of a literal masterpiece from start to finish. I’ve not read a fantasy which has consumed me body and soul for a long time. Every character (even the ones you want dead from the start) are so well written and beautifully merged into the story, the lore and history is just astounding. The magic system?! I’m in awe of Tina’s mind. I went through an array of emotions reading this, that ending had me staring at my kindle for about 5 minutes hoping that it would change. I cannot wait for this book to be out in the big wide world - it’s going to end your 2026 with a bang. Thank you Tina and your amazing team for sending me a super early arc to read and fall in love with

What an incredible debut by Tina Mars!!

I admit to staying up late and binging this one because once the story really settled in it was a ride! I love a story with Gods and Alchemy and Eldritch type creatures haunting the pages! Old parts of cities in ruins — it was a fascinating world to explore through this enemies-to-lovers romantasy.

I loved Revel’s journey … her inability to feel like she belongs and her fight to know she’s enough. Her push and pull relationship with Axus kept me glued to the pages and — oh, I loved him, too. Their interactions were top tier!

The ensemble cast was excellent and I must say, I really enjoyed the villain in this and that ending — how dare you?!? What an excellent start to this series and I eagerly await the next book! Thank you to Saturday Books for the opportunity to read and review this early.

OMG I just finished this romantasy gladiator romance and it left me completely wrecked! Slow burn, found family, enemies to lovers, morally gray - I ate up every minute. Revel was one of the best female leads that I’ve ever read and I was rooting (and maybe screaming) for her from the sidelines. This book had me hooked from the very first page as Revel is pushed to enter a gladiator style competition as the “heir” from her kingdom. She has been put through so many trials already but then enters the competition through a cloud of intrigue where no one is what they seems. And Axus (or warbringer) - OMG THE CHEMISTRY. He had me swooning again and again.

When I tell you that this is a must read- a romantasy thrill ride that you will not be able to put down! Give it all the stars and sign me up for the next one STAT.

I have been anticipating Tina Mar's debut book for months! I've heard nothing but good things. I loved how morally gray this book is. The world, the characters, the magic, nothing is good nor evil. There is no filter between Rev and the reader, every thought is freely given, even the ones that paint her in an uglier light, and I LOVED it. I loved the honesty in it, the selfishness and self-preservation of it—it truly showed what the fantasy world was like, a world where people are just trying to survive and protect those they love. I also loved the side characters, even when they did something I didn't appreciate. AND THERE'S SO MANY EGGS AND LOOPS THAT NEED CLOSED AND AND I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW THEY COME TO PLAY IN THE NEXT BOOK.

This book had me on edge at every page. I was crying, gasping, sitting up with a hand out going "NO0O" "HOLD ONNNN" and "WAIT WHAT" everv single time there was a reveal and DAMN WAS THERE REVEALS!!!

Its a perfect mix of yearning, lies, plotting, "touch her and die" and epicness that spans generations.I am so glad I was given the opportunity to read this early and I don't think I'm going to recover from it
I will be screaming about this book from the rooftops because as her debut novel, Tina has absolutely smashed this out of the park and I know for a fact that she is going to make WAVES in the fantasy genre.

It drops on November 10th 2026 and everyone needs to read it as soon as its out

Thank you to Saturday Books and the author for the advanced readers copy of This Wretched Alchemy. This was a very easy 4.5 stars for me!

This will be a difficult review because it was truly the last 10% that made my love (ange for this book skyrocket! Without giving any spoilers, I will leave it with this.

You must read this book!!!

This is not a happy, leave you with a light fluffy feeling, book. This will test all of your reserves with "who to trust and who is good". I was so angry at times at the fmc for her lack of forgiveness, but heck!! Girl, understandable!

The end of this book will leave you with huge emotional damage and a NEED for the next book.

I cannot say more. Other than Tina Mars knows how to rip out a heart.

4/5 ⭐️
2/5 🌶️

This was solid. Good pace, world building, magic system, writing, etc. I thought the premise was interesting and the romance decent.

I did have a sneaking suspicion re: one of the twists at the end but the other (epilogue) twist I did not see coming.

I will say, I’m unsure if I’ll continue the series. While good, I don’t know that I was that invested. This could have been a me issue. But overall, I do think it’s decnt and would recommend.

Thank you so so much Saturday Books, author, and netgalley for the earc!

Thank you to the publisher and author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I decided to DNF this title as I realised fantasy isn’t a genre I typically gravitate toward. There was nothing inherently wrong with the writing or story, but I found it wasn’t the right fit for my personal reading preferences.

Readers who enjoy fantasy elements and immersive world-building will likely have a very different experience with this one.

Received this book as an ARC and was so glad I did. What a solid first book! The FMC Revel was complex, finding her strength grow throughout the book. The MMC Axus was grey but you just knew his intent was in the right place. Be ready in this book for a more complicated magic history and complexity. And if you enjoy a slow burn with some spice, this is a great fit. Just don’t expect too much in this book - it would be too much too soon!
