The latest edition of this best-selling reference text explains diagnostic tests for the practicing midwife. It is also used by parents to better understand the care they are receiving and to make informed choices about which tests they do and do not want. It is recommended by numerous midwifery programs for student midwives and used by practicing midwives as well as doulas, childbirth educators, doctors and other practitioners with a speciality in maternity care throughout the English-speaking world.
Anne Frye is a midwife, a midwifery consultant, and author. She writes and publishes textbooks, and she produced a video and accompanying software entitled "Understanding Female Pelvis Anatomy in 3D." She holds an independent study BA degree in Holistic Midwifery and has been a midwife since 1979.
I really wanted to love and value this text. However, there is a chapter about HIV/AIDS, and one about bacteria that completely fly in the face of science. The lab values are great, but some of the references are over 30 years old. I have the 7th edition, so perhaps this edition is the only one? This was required reading for my midwifery program. I am grateful for the resource to tell me which tests to order and when, but all of the old/misinformation is not something I can get past. HIV/AIDS is real, and bacteria/viruses DO cause illness. If you've done a simple microbiology project growing bacteria in the fridge, you know that perhaps something that grows like that could cause illness. The section on disease in pregnancy will be a great resource for midwives outside north America, however, for those in the US/Canada may never see the majority of these illnesses.
