Overview
Rising star of French soft rock Cyril falls for Laura--the charming groupie who waltzed into his life one sweet summer afternoon. Their story could have been pretty straightforward except... He's blind. And she isn't who she claims to be.
My Thoughts
What a sweet story - i know that there's a larger series here that i have been slow to really sort that one out. So at least, because i was able to get my hands on this ARC, i got my intro to what i think will be a sweet series. In this short novella, we have the continuation i'm guessing of a story surrounding Cyril - who was a rock star in his own right and unfortunately found himself on the bad side of a car accident that left him disfigured (scars) as well as blind and deaf. He was able to get hearing aids implated so that he can hear and potentially resume his music career, but the blindness is something that's far more uncertain.
In addition to dealing with what his life has become, he's also dealing with the fact that the girl that he had been in a relationship wtih for ages - decided that she wasn't made for 'babysitting' and didn't want to be with him anymore because of how he looked and what his limitations would be. So, this is what introduces us to the downward spiral that Cyril's in. He's able to cope by finding a routine and there's plenty of technology out there to help him be 'normal' - but you know how it is - for a rock star to go into obscurity.
Enter Laura (or Emma) - who ironically is Gerrie's sister (Gerrie being Cyril's ex) - and she's had a crush on him since day one. She feels like this is her opportunity to really get to know him and see if there's somethign there - so she puts on this persona of 'Laura' in the hopes of being able to get close to him and for Cyril to maybe fall in love with her.
The quick journey that we take here is a nice one. We see that Emma's intentions are from the heart and that she really wants to be with Cyril because of who he is - not what he is. This brings on a level of connection and romance that they both deserve. It's only when Gerrie comes around one day - after Cyril and Emma have really bonded that things get dicey. Bringing up the question of whether Gerrie's motives are clear and true, and whether Cyril's able to get past what Emma's done in lying to him.
I guess what this means for me is that i have to find the rest of the series and read it since i'm really intrigued. Personally i don't know if the series really revolves around, but if it's anything like the novella here, then i think that it'll be worth the read. the characters are sweet - they are imperfect and they have honest emotions towards one another and that's what makes for a GREAT read. so...Enjoy!
Falling for Emma is a sweet, sensitive and fast paced novella! Doesn’t the first line sum it up really nicely? Does it not make you want to read it? You should read it! It is a delight to read and it is based in France, I am a big, big France fan; maybe it is all the love and romance talk I heard as a young girl and maybe because France is synonymous with romance I enjoyed it immensely. I finished the book from start to finish in one sitting; it was a funny, interesting and perfect for a novella. Alix knows what a good novella is all about. This is the first book I have read by her and it will not be the last. Looking forward to reading the other books in this series. Cyril may be scarred and grumpy but his character speaks volumes, he doesn’t try the ‘pity card’ or become the inaccessible grumpy monster. It is kindness and indulgence for his friends when they set him up with his music booth and his attitude towards those who look out for him even though he is a blind guy make him a winner. He is a singer is an added perk ;) Only one thing I found a bit odd was that if he knew her since high school, he should have recognised her by her voice at least. But I am no judge of how a blind person perceives those around him so I agree he could have been fooled. Emma is the sweet, girl next door and she has been in love with Cyril forever. She gets close to him by faking to be someone else and when he finds out………she has a hard time convincing him of her motives. Her heart is in the right place and they both have great chemistry. It was fun to read and quick enough to be read on your commute or even a week night for a good read.
Falling for Emma, when I come across the title, of course the cover caught the attention of my eyes but I felt that this would be a usual story of love between teenagers. I was proved wrong as soon as I started with the book.
The book turns out to be a very different kind of romance read altogether. The protagonist Cyril is who is a famous musician, who lost his eyesight in a car accident. Emma is a sweet simple girl, who loves her since teenage when Cyril was not blind. At that point of time, Cyril was boyfriend of Emma's sister Geraldine.
Eventually Cyril loses his eyesight in an accident, because of which Geraldine loses her interest in him but the true love of Emma for Cyril become stronger and she decided to make her own way to enter the life of Cyril. The events then on are really sweet, funny and highly emotional. I would decide not to mention further story, I must recommend every romance lover must read this book to know what happened next.
This book is a prequel to the Bistro La Boheme series. This was a first book of Author Alix Nichols for me. I loved everything about the book. Writing style of the author is beautiful and perfect for Romance genre. The story keeps progressing beautifully and holds the interest of the reader till the last line.
I loved the character of Emma, the ending wouldn't have been perfect than what it is. Highly recommended to everyone who loves to read emotional romance.
I must thank Nikita Soni for sending over a review copy to Me. This review is my own views about the book and not influenced by any means.
this is the love story I fell for and really loved it. Must read to everyone who likes deep emotions in a book perfectly written
I am a big fan of Alix Nichols. I think Falling for Emma is the best of the stories I read from Bistro La Boheme books. This story was beautifully written and absolutely loved it. The storyline is a very difficult emotional situation that Cyril was going through. The famous musician had to live a new life after a car accident. Also we have to sisters who were in his life. I am not telling you anything . You should read yourself. My favorite thing in all booksBistro La Boheme is friends / family type feeling of the bistro, the names and events we recognize in all books. I hope that Alix Will keep adding more books, let us meet other people and will tell us what was happening with couple we already know.
Falling For Emma is a prequel to the Bistro La Boheme series by Alix Nichols and the fourth book by her that I have read and enjoyed.
The cover is interesting and eye catching but it was the blurb that had me eagerly opening the book to read. It is intriguing and will definitely interest readers to pick this book up to read.
In this book, we are introduced to Cyril and Emma. Cyril lost his eyesight in an accident and was hideously scarred leaving him bitter and feeling helpless. A famous musician, he is feeling alone and is suddenly realizing that he has become a liability. His girlfriend is avoiding him, people look at him with pity and even the most simple tasks that he took for granted have become difficult for him to perform.
Amidst all this negativity, a mysterious woman enters his life and through her simple and honest gestures makes him feel alive again. But she is hiding a secret which can destroy their fragile new bond.
The writing style of the author is as usual engaging and the story flows beautifully while managing to engross the reader. Bistro La Boheme and the surroundings are vividly sketched and easily create a mental picture in our minds. I felt like I was there, sitting beside Cyril, sipping coffee while I watched people bustling in and out of the cafe. Although, I have never been to Paris, I could visualize the scenic apartment buildings, the cafes lining the road, the cute red awnings in Bistro La Boheme with its tall rack of wine and waiters and waitresses waiting on customers with a smile and the general activity of people going about their work or enjoying some quality time with their friends and family.
The characterization is expertly done and the characters drawn out well. I could compare Cyril's life before and after the accident easily and felt sympathetic towards him. Emma's dilemmas and her longing for Cyril made me root for a happily-ever-after for her. Geraldine made me seriously angry and I almost hated her superficial and materialistic nature. The contrast between her and Emma, the two lead female characters is beautifully brought out by the author.
Having already read the other books in this series, it was lovely to read about the characters from those other books who made an appearance again in this one. Jeanne, Rob, Adrien, Natalie made me a happy reader. I was so pleased to meet Adrien and Natalie again and see them so happy together. Don't miss their story in You're the One. Rob and Jeanne will have their own story later in the What if it's love? and Under My Skin respectively. Although part of a series, these books can be read as standalone stories.
Alix sensitively brings out the plight of blind people and the challenges they face every day. She also makes a point when she shows that true friends and family never leave your sight even when you are hideously scarred and blind. Only the pretend well wishers leave.
All in all, Falling For Emma is a sweet, entertaining and heartfelt novella that had me hooked until the last page. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all romance lovers. Go read this book and the the series which easily transports you to the beautiful, romantic and cozy Bistro La Boheme where love, laughter and romance abound.
I received and ARC from the author and I am very thankful to her. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.
I absolutly LOVED Falling For Emma and I'm really happy to talk to you about this beautiful novella.
Where do I start ?!
Well, maybe you should know, if it wasn't obvious, that the setting of this book is Paris. Everyone who knows me is aware of my love for Paris, my capital city. So I deeply enjoyed reading about one of my favorites cities but most of all, this Romance set in Paris was all I wanted and more ! There were beautiful scenes with emotions and it reminded me of this Audrey Hepburn movie where the main character, Ariane, masquerade as a girl she's not so she can approach and feel the love of the guy of her dreams.
With this book, you walk in Paris, side by side with emotions, laughters and love. There were white lies and you couldn't judge Emma for what she tried so hard not to feel. Because in the end, everything she did was for love. That's the way I see it...
"She watched the breeze ruffle the river's surface and the quaint péniche barges float by. Barge spotting had been one of her favorite pastimes since she was a kid."
I enjoyed the pace of the story, with two POV and intense moments. You could totally feel the story as if you were Cyril or Laura/Emma. It was beautiful, intense and gripping. For instance, I was dying to know how exactly Cyril had his accident or what secrets Emma kept silent. The love story is building in a realistic way that makes this novella an easy read and a page turner. You care about these two characters and want to know what they'll become when the truth is revealed.
About the romance here, I loved the sensuality and the chemistry of Cyril and Laura. It was obvious they were made for each other but sometimes I was scared that one of them wouldn't grab the happy ending they deserved so much. But without telling too much, I can say I was pleased by the plot from the beginning to the end.
I fell for Cyril almost instantly because of his complexity and well, I always had a thing for musician ! His scars were not at all repulsing. I thought he was really interesting to put myself in his shoes, not just because he is blind, but mostly because he is broken. I would have loved to hear him sing or read his songs !
"He could no longer deny how he felt about her. Not just the part where he craved her right down to his bones, but also the part where he had let her take up residence in his empty heart and was still reeling from the glow that filled it..."
As for Emma, I easily put myself in her shoes too. She is both fragile and strong, all she went through and her undying love for Cyril is something you can rely on. I loved that she was the opposite of her nasty sister (Sorry Geraldine !). In the end, you can perfectly understand why their love story was meant to be.
"Oh, how she loved that unrestrained laugh of his. It was better than a bowl of rum raisin ice cream or a scented hot bath in the middle of January or an afternoon on the beach with a great book. It was simply the best thing in the world..."
I hope I didn't forget anything but I think that's pretty much all you need to know about Falling For Emma. I hope you will go read this novella because I really loved all of it. It's the kind of love stories I fell for and I wasn't disappointed ! I will read Alix Nichols Bistro La Bohème series and get back to you about that. I'm already certain I will enjoy it !
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review for the release day of Falling for Emma.
So book is told out of Emma and Cyril point of view. which always gives a book a fresh feel to do.
"how she loved that unrestrained laugh of his. It was better than a bowl of rum raisin ice cream or a scented hot bath in the middle of January or an afternoon on the beach with a great book."
Now Cyril is a musician who had everything. Until on fateful night where he lost one of his most precious gifts - the gift of sight. 3 months down the line Cyril is does his best to cope with what is happening in his life. That is until a stranger shows him kindness and everything changes from there.
"cant you see it? Can't you see how much I love you?"
Emma lost her heart to her sister boyfriend 10 years ago and has never truly got it back. She decides to make a small change to give her the change to speak to the man she has loved for years - a small change such as changing her name.
"But she gently shook him out of his stupor and gave him something precious. Affection. Hope. Joie de vivre"
In the end things does goes up in flames with Cyril finding out truly who Lauren is. He also realized that fame, glitz and glamour clouded his eyes and being blind made him truly see what was always right in front of him.
Alix captured Cyril blindness perfectly and made you feel for him.
"that connection that sense of having finally come home was real"
True love will always find each other, no matter how difficult the opsticale. and this is proved in Falling for Emma.
I give Falling for Emma 4 Stringy Stars
If you love Alix work then you will love Falling for Emma. And if you haven't read any of her work then this is a the perfect book for you, heart warming, short love story that will have your insides all warm and gooey.
This novella is long enough to immerse yourself in the story and short enough to read in one go. It’s the first book I have read by Alix Nichols, and it won’t be the last. Although it’s part of the Bistro La Boheme Series, you can read it as a stand-alone with a happy end.
The author introduces us to Cyril, a famous French guitarist and singer, whose life has been altered completely by a car accident. It has left him scarred on the inside and the outside, and also blind. Enter a girlfriend who doesn’t want to be his “babysitter”, loyal friends with a cool bistro – and Emma, the heroine. Where everyone else either doesn’t know how to treat him or tries to avoid him, Emma knows just how to draw him out of his shell. You root for them as a couple, and they certainly have to face some difficulties until they get their well-deserved Happily Ever After.
What I liked most about this sweet-and-steamy novella is the way Cyril’s blindness was portrayed. Sometimes you feel pity, sometimes you want to slap him, sometimes you completely forgot about his disability. It was interesting to see who helped him in which way. It was also nice that the author let us look into the every-day life of a blind person, and that she gave us glimpses of how Cyril was like in the past and how the accident has changed him. Emma was a great character in her own right. It was wonderful to see things from her point of view too, and to understand her feelings for Cyril. The contrast between her and her sister couldn’t have been bigger, and it enhanced the plot.
If you’re looking for an easy but intelligently written read that combines believable, well fleshed out characters with a fluid writing style, then you’ll be happy with this book. There’s just enough backstory and detail to the story to make you forget everything else until you’ve read it from start to finish. And there are so many different emotions packed into the book, so many ups and downs.

I am completely in love with this book! And I did not fall for this book after I finished reading it; I fell in love with it just a little while after I started reading it. The story is like a cupcake – one of those little ones that decorated with all sorts of colorful toppers! Small and sweet, the story leaves you with a happy feeling that stays with you for quite some time after you’ve finished reading. Every chapter in the story is organized according to its lead characters – Cyril and Emma each gets to individually voice their emotions in alternate chapters. What impresses here is that the author manages to keep this segregation clean, not once making you think that you’d have liked the book to be organized otherwise. I loved the way Alix begins the story—introducing Cyril in something like hushed whispers! I loved the little nuances she presents of Emma’s character—clearly the more descriptive character in the story. Geraldine’s character has been penned beautifully and adds only that much amount of grey to this colorful story as is necessary. The secondary characters, those of Cyril’s friends and the staff at the café are just as adorable as the lead pair. Every facet of the story is revealed to the user at a comfortable pace and not in a haste, considering that this is a novella. The author is definitely not in a haste to meet the word count limit and is more intent on creating a cherished reading experience for the reader. And it turns to be exactly that. Confused that when the blurb says Laura, who in the world are Emma and Geraldine? Go grab the book and find out!
I think this is probably the best book, most romantic, emotional, and sweetest story that the author wrote.
At first I was wondering who these two were and apparently this is a prequel novella in her Bistro La Boheme Series.
Ms. Nichols captured the characters of Cyril and Emma. How she portrayed Cyril after his accident which left him blind and Emma's unrequited love.
Although I wished that Emma waited for Cyril if only if her reason wasn't that. And well Cyril, I think he was more blind when couldn't see what was in front of him but I guess that's a valid reason since the first time he met Emma she was still thirteen to his sixteen. Still, I wished that he realized sooner before he got together with Geraldine or that Emma would have done something about it.
I guess we can't choose how it goes. Still, I enjoyed the interactions between Emma and Cyril but I kind of wanted to hit both of their heads since they acted like idiots. And Cyril was too slow for realizing that Emma had feelings for him. But I wouldn't have any other way since Emma became his muse to start playing his music again.
The ending on how they got together was really sweet. I shed a tear there with Emma. I thought, "Finally, they are together."
I'm looking forward to more of Alix Nichils Bistro La Boheme stories.
A short read (as most novellas are) that manages to tell a rich story ripe with detail and romance and angst.
Cyril has every right to be depressed and bitter and yet he's managing to begin his new life with very little of that. Adjusting to being blind is definitely difficult but I could easily imagine him taking it much worse. He has great friends and family members that provide a wonderful support system for him as he adjusts.
Emma is the younger sister of his on-again off-again long time girlfriend and has been in love with Cyril since she was thirteen. Throughout the many years they've known each other their interactions have been minimal so when she approaches him under the guise of "Laura" he doesn't realize that she really is Emma.
Want to know what happens from there once the truth is revealed and how emotions run high? You'll just have to read. It seems like this is going to be a great series if this book is anything to go by.
Okay, I admit it. When I read the premise of the story, I started reading assuming I would fall in love with Cyril right away. Wrong! In fact, I found him to be an arrogant, drunken jerk. I did not care if he was blind, he was an ass.
But then…as I was reminded, there are reasons why people act as they do. All I needed to do was give Cyril a chance, and I am so glad I did.
Cyril had recently been in an accident that left him blind and scarred. Before that, he was a famous singer/songwriter.
Emma is graphic artist that has known him since she was a teen - pre-fame.
At several points, I wanted to shake both of them! But that also made them so real.
I have (sadly) never been to Paris, and sometimes got a bit stuck on all the names of shops and streets and other things Parisian.
All in all, a great little love story with HEA!
This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

Cyril French Singer was in an accident that left him scarred and blind. He must learn to live on his own all over again, but he does have lots of help in his corner. He finds a Bistro that he feels very comfortable going to daily. They treat him as just a regular guy.
Laura aka Emma has been in love with Cyril for as long as she can remember. She finds where he is everyday and inserts herself into his life. She has a whopping secret and when she tells him he may never speak to her again.
I was In Cyril's corner from the very beginning, through is ups and downs. Laura aka Emma has her reasons for not telling who she is, I understood where she was coming from. This was a very sweet romance story.
I was given this ARC by the author, for an honest review!! This is the first book I have read by Alix and although I don't normally read short stories, I thoroughly enjoyed it... After a horrific car crash, which causes him to lose his sight, amongst other injuries.....Cyril is trying to come to terms with his injury... Being a famous musician before his accident, he thinks his life is pretty much over... So he drowns his sorrows with getting drunk... Until one day a mysterious stranger walks in..... This story was beautifully written and I look forward to reading more from Alix!!!
Enjoyed this short story so much that I wish it was more than a novella. The author did a fantastic job weaving this story together so that you don't feel cheated. The hero wasn't a perfect sexy billionaire rockstar; he was a flawed imperfectly perfect man. His handicap made him vulnerable but his character made him sexy. I can't wait to read more from this author.
Cyril was a soft rock star in France. But a fan showed up and was spending time with him. But what he didn't know what she was not who she said she was. Why? Because he was now blind and couldn't see who she really was.
I absolutely loved the book! I loved Cyril and how he was with Laura. Can't say much without giving away a whole lot. I would love to see more of them and see if Cyril ever does get his eye sight back.
First book in the Bistro la Boheme series. Interesting twist on a main character - I liked it! Both the male and female leads in this book caught my heart.
Since the first day she laid eyes on French singer Cyril, she fell in love with him. The only downside was that he never felt the same way as he was head over heels in love with someone else - that someone else was Emma's older sister Gerrie. The pair has been together for years and the crush that Emma had didn't go away, so she did on a sabbatical to Asia. When she came back, her feelings still hadn't changed. Now she has to tell him how she feels to move on. While she has been away, Cyril was in an accident that left him blind and scarred. He has been busy drinking away at the Bistro La Boheme and finding his and Gerrie's relationship straining. Enter Emma under the false name of Laura, she befriends Cyril, and soon he is feeling better than ever, he is laughing away and seems like he is back to a happier version of himself thanks to Emma -I mean Laura. What will happen though when Laura is about to tell him the truth, that she is, in fact, Emma and loves him when her sister Gerrie turns up and spoils the occasion by blurting the truth to Cyril? Falling for Emma was a cute romance story, and I love ones like this where they finally discover who they are meant to be with, but I am not one personally for the playing games of deception, but it does make the story more intense.
I just loved this story it was full of such emotion, love and just a very touching read. This is a wonderful way to start a series with just enough to get you interested but not to much. It is just long enough to give you a taste with you wanting more. I love a story where it reminds us or re-teaches a lesson we might have forgotten. If we were all blind I do feel the world would be a better place, we might see things different and really reach inside ourselves to remember what is truly important. This is truly a wonderful story not your normal romance but a romance just the same. It is a story about what we think we want might not be what we want. What we see isn’t the way it is and sometimes if we just look beyond we might just find our hearts desire.
Cyril a singer who has made his way to the top of the charts when he was in a car accident with his girlfriend’s sister. He loses his eye sight and things go downhill from there. Said sister doesn’t want anything to do with him, he just isn’t whole anymore and she isn’t a baby setter. There is someone who does love him just as he is but he doesn’t see her. She takes things into her own hands in hopes he will see her as she really is. She makes plans and puts them in action, the only thing is Laura really isn’t her name and lords help her when he finds out who she is.
You have to love these character they are strong but weak. They see but they are blind to how things could be. They are funny and cute but have a lot to learn. Sometimes what we truly are looking for we have always seen but never really saw.
The author gives you a wonderful love story, with wonderful character. The words flows easy as the author pulls you in and you keep turning the pages to find out what she has in store for you. She tells a wonderful story of love, lost, pain, sorrow, wants, wishes and so much more. You will be left with a smile and almost a tear as you turn the last page. The author leaves you wanting more.
If that isn’t enough to get you interested….at the time of this post this is a free read. You have nothing to lose by buying this and you just might find a new favorite author as I did.
I was looking for something interesting and new to read when I came across this book. The book was nice, a bit short, but it was an enjoyable story. I usually have a problem with some character in the book, but I didn't hate any character in this book. The characters are likable and, in many ways, you can identify with them. I recommend this book to everyone who likes a sweet and entertaining book!
Cyril has one hell of a year. He rose to stardom as a French soft rock musician but lost all of that when he lost his sight. Now, cynical about the world, he hides away while he tries to comes to grip with his new world. A world without sight. A world where he doesn't want to play music. A dark, sad, lonely life.
But then Laura, a charming groupie, comes into his life he suddenly has a reason for living again. He has purpose. But he doesn't realize that Laura isn't who she said she is. And since he can't see her, he doesn't realize he already knows this 'super-fan'.
I highly recommend this story! It's short, but sweet. I liked both main characters and I really enjoyed the story-line of the book. A fast read that I can see a lot of people enjoying. Trust me, it's a really fantastic story!
My favorite quotes:
"Good girl. Don't you let decadent a**holes like me sway you from the path of righteousness."
"Was it because sometimes being sighted prevented you from seeing?"
Cyril is struggling to adapt to life after losing his sight in an accident. He is a famous musician, and while his ability to write or play songs hasn't been lost, his inspiration and motivation has. His girlfriend has left him because she doesn't want to be a care taker. Things are feeling pretty bleak until he meets Laura at a bistro where he spends a lot of his time. They connect quickly and their attraction to one another seems perfect. But Laura isn't who she says she is, and revealing herself to Cyril could bring everything to an end.
This book had a lot of charm, even as it dealt with a pretty serious situation. Cyril's whole life has changed, and everything is going to be more difficult for him. Laura was an easy character to care about even through her questionable choice of behaviors at times. I liked her a lot and really wanted things to get cleared up so that both she and Cyril could find the happiness they deserved. The backdrop of Paris added an additional layer of charm to the whole story. I would be interested to read more books in this series.
*An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review
I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Alix Nichols and it will definitely not be my last! I loved Emma & Cyril's story! Set in Paris, this romantic story touched my soul. Beautifully written with such depth of emotions for both Emma & Cyril that you can honestly identify with what each is going through. I highly recommend this book, this series and have added Alix Nichols to my MUST-READ Authors List!
I really enjoyed this book. Very sweet love story that was perfectly paced and the perfect length. The characters were loveable, and include Emma, a woman who's had a crush on her sister's boyfriend, Cyril, since she was 13. After Cyril recovers from an accident that leaves him both blind and with his hearing impaired, Emma hatches a crazy plan to get closer to him. I don't want to give too much away, but will say when I finished this book I had a smile on my face.
Such a cute read. The French air of romance is always intriguing.
Not a spoiler as we already know Laura is not who she appears to be. So the nice thing, the VERY nice thing, is that all "associated" problems were resolved smoothly without the usual very annyoing misunderstandings that give the reader a difficult time.
And so, this was a short book that makes you happy. What more does one need?
