Wowzers, that is some compelling writing. Sproles pulled me right into 20th century Appalachia, the prose like the characters were speaking straight to me. The plot was thrilling yet heartbreaking, the characters frustrating at times but so REAL, and the faith content incredibly convicting.

Fiction nowadays is so saturated with girlboss, take-charge female leads, and it was a breath of fresh air to read an entire novel built around a girl needing to let go of her independence and trust others to take care of her and see to justice. So often the leads wind up superseding the criminal justice systems involved, and I was glad to see this more realistic take. And honestly, I think we could all use the reminder to chill out, let go, and trust God and others to take care of things.

Lizzy was a sassy young lady, and sometimes I was just as irritated with her as Alton, Joe, and the others. I loved how fiercely she loved her brother, though, and then how fiercely others loved her even though she didn't make it easy. And wow! This story was full of unexpected revelations, and some were just as difficult for me to accept as they were for Lizzy. Above all, though, this book gave me a LOT to think about. And I wish Lizzy's momma could have been set free by the truth just as Lizzy came to be.

Trigger/content warnings: rape of a secondary character (described in vague terms), domestic abuse due to alcoholism, several murders on-page early on.

Overall, I found this to be a very heavy yet inspiring novel, and I hope to get the chance to read more of Cindy K. Sproles's books in the future!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

Guys. The cover on this one. WHOA. It is just as haunting as the beautiful story that tugged on every string my heart possesses. Cindy gives such a well written representation of Appalachia in the early 1900’s & weaves it with one young woman’s search for faith, truth, freedom & the ability to trust against all odds.

The story was indeed one that captivated & the author was able to braid history & fiction in a way that kept me rapt to the pages all the way through. The twists & secrets that came to light were not at all predictable to me & broke my heart a little harder by the time it was all said & done. Lawsy mercy!

This would have been a 5 star read for me if it were based on the plot alone, cuz ya’ll, it’s a good one! However, it was the execution of the characters that lacked a little something for me. I don’t think I connected to them in the way that was meant. I felt that Lizzy’s "selfish & untrusting” personality didn’t really present itself in an obvious way, so when the supporting characters treated her harshly & called her out on her behavior, I couldn’t help feeling slightly confused. Especially after all she endured as a child! Maybe I just missed something along the way. It happens.

Overall, these pages held a bit of everything that makes my heart beat a little faster & left off with a hope giving story that inspired!

Thank you to Kregel Books and the author for the gifted copy!

The Eyes of River captivated my attention on the first few pages. In this story set in late 1800’s southern Appalachia, we meet Lizzy Haney as she’s mailing her 9 year old brother, River, to a friend in Knoxville Tennessee. She does this in order to keep River safe from their abusive father. But not long after, Lizzy is falsely accused of murder and is forced to run also. Alton, her childhood friend and the son of the local sheriff, helps her escape to clear her name and search for River who they find out never arrived at his destination.
Parts of the story are heartbreaking as Lizzy struggles to work through the suppressed memories from her abusive upbringing. But she’s blessed by people who come along side her to help like the Wiley’s. This older couple offers her the parental love she never experienced as a child.
I especially enjoyed Lizzy’s growing relationship with Alton. As the story progresses, she begins to see him not as a bumbling schoolmate but as a handsome young man she can trust. I was cheering for them as a couple from the very beginning of the book.

This was my first Cindy Sproles novel and what a ride! It’s gritty and raw with more twists than an Ozarks road(IYKYK), but it was a a really good read. Parts of the story were hard for this mama’s heart but it’s a compelling story and near impossible to put down. I’ll be adding more of Cindy’s previous books to my TBR.

OVERALL STAR RATING: 3/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I don't think I've ever rated a book 3-stars that was SUCH a page-turner before. Do I love Cindy's writing? YES! Was this story intriguing? Also, YES. I just felt with this specific story, I had a hard time with some of the characters. Ones that we were intended to love and who showed God's love, really left me with an unsettling feeling. I was truly questioning the heart and motives of some of these Christian characters, and it just left me with an overall feeling of "ick". Our FMC, Lizzy, has survived an incredibly challenging upbringing with and alcoholic father. She is desperate and willing to do anything to save her brother, River, from their dangerous situation. With all that Lizzy has sacrificed, she's continually told that she's selfish which just didn't sit well with me. Sure, Lizzy had a feisty nature at times, but it's what's gotten her through life thus far. It didn't seem as though anyone cared enough to step back and fully understand the depth of what she was emotionally going through.

I understood the author's direction, but I felt it could have been executed differently. I so desperately wanted to love and adore these characters. The ending also left me scratching my head a bit for several reasons.

I will definitely continue to pick up Cindy's books; this one was just a bit off for me personally.

The Eyes of River is an unputdownable, heart-tugging story of trust and truth. Lizzy Haney, needing to escape her abusive father and uncover secrets from the past, sets out on a search for her nine-year-old brother River while evading arrest on trumped-up murder charges. She is aided by Alton Mosley, her childhood friend, and the Wileys, a wonderful couple who are strangers to her. I admired their perseverance in trying to help Lizzie even though she was less than appreciative of their help at the time. The first chapter hooked me, and the author's distinct voice kept me turning page after page! I was immersed in the early 1900s Appalachian culture whose dialect and harsh realities this author always captures beautifully and authentically. This powerful, masterfully written story sparked myriad emotions--sadness, anger, disbelief, compassion, empathy to name a few. An amazing cast of complex, diverse characters drive the story. I greatly appreciate the strong faith thread, especially Lizzie's faith journey. I enjoyed the hymn lyrics and bits of real history that are incorporated into the story. This is the kind of book that will linger in my mind for a long while. It has my highest recommendation.

“The truth shall make you free. The truth shall make you free. I kept repeatin' the words, tryin' to convince myself it was true. All the while, the memory of River’s eyes scorched my soul.”

Whoo, boy! I feel just a little numb after reading this Appalachian novel, The Eyes of River, by Cindy Sproles. Writing with her unparalleled mountain voice, Sproles transports the reader back in time to 1913 Tennessee, south of Chattanooga.

There we meet rough, but spirited Lizzy Haney, 17. After watching her deadbeat drunk father kill her mother, Lizzy believes her father’s threats to kill her younger 9 year-old brother, whose deep-green eyes “could bore a hole through your soul.” Her father can’t stand the judgment of those innocent, discerning eyes. Believing herself River’s only protection, Lizzy mails him off to her mother’s friend in Chattanooga. Things progress from bad to worse when her cruel father sets Lizzy up to take the wrap for murders he commits. Soon on the run, with her plans in ashes, will Lizzy accept help from others? Will she find the truth that can set her free?

I love Alton for his patience with Lizzy. He has loved her for a long time, but Lizzy has looked no further than first impressions and appearances. Alton offers to help guide Lizzy in the mountains, at a risk to his own life, but Lizzy can’t stop depending on her own wisdom and insisting they do things her way. Alton finally rebukes her, “Lizzy, you need to learn to hush. Be quiet. You need to understand you don’t know everything, and sometimes folks is just trying to help you.” Somehow, Alton has become a mature, wise man when Lizzy wasn’t noticing.

Lizzy finds this journey not only dangerous but frustrating and full of self-discovery (“ye shall know the truth”), but often that truth is painful. As the Sheriff tells Lizzy, ( and so does Alton!) “You do have a problem with doing what you’re told.” If the rescue of River will depend on Lizzy being quiet and doing what she’s told, there could be some huge snags!

I loved the variety of people that populate the secondary character stage. They are well-drawn, some heart-ugly, some beautiful from within, but all compelling and great catalysts for action. Jerelene and Joe are wonderful encouragers and “growth prodders” for Lizzy. Lizzy’s daddy and Yeager are worthy undesirable criminals who need caught!

If I could hear a single song playing as the soundtrack in the background as I read this book, surely it would be Foreigner’s “I wanna know what love is. I want you to show me.” Lizzy wants desperately to know what love is. From some characters, she gets very skewed ideas or imperfect love. From others, like Alton, the Wileys, or Tilda, she sees true love, but as I said above, a love that cares enough to tell the truth. Will she connect with the Source of perfect Love?

I received a copy of the book from the publisher. I also ordered a paperback for my keeper shelf. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“…real love don’t care what or who you are. It just cares that you are.”
- (what Lizzy learns from Jerelene)

“You can’t change what you are, no matter how you scrub the hide. Instead you learn to accept it and change from the inside.” - Jerelene

”At that moment I began to understand what it meant to trust. Trusting someone meant having no doubt they would do what they said they would do.” - ( Lizzy)

“A body doesn’t have to ask questions. He just has to listen. You learn a lot when you listen.” - Sheriff Mosley

THE EYES OF RIVER by Cindy K. Sproles is the masterfully crafted, captivating story of Lizzy Haney, her nine-year-old brother River and Alton Mosley, a former classmate.

Lizzy’s homelife was unlike others. Her father was a drunkard. While he hadn’t been physically abusive, his words could cut as deep as a knife. While she thought her mother loving, she had put up with him until he eventually killed her. His loathing of River had only increased. With verbal threats to kill River, Lizzy feared for her brother’s life. She scrounged 28 cents for postage and turned him over to Postmaster Roy sending him to Tilda Frazier, her mother’s friend, where she thought he’d be safe. She knew doing so would eventually have her receiving her father’s rath. How did she know that it would lead to him killing two men and framing her as the murderer? One thing she knew, she had to run for her life until she could prove him guilty.

Alton is tall, lanky and had always been a bit clumsy. He’s always had a soft spot in his heart for Lizzy, although she had been a bit mean to him at times. He has matured and with the help of Meko, his Cherokee friend, he’s learned a lot too. When he encountered Lizzy, he knew immediately that she was in danger and that he would do anything to protect her – even with his life.

While Lizzy had never known trust, dare she put hers in Alton? Can he honestly keep her safe and help her find proof of what her father had done? Will Alton’s actions have her seeing him in a new light? When her brother is taken by a group that steals and sells children, will she be able to find him before he disappears to parts unknown? Will Lizzy and Alton be able to help in the bigger picture of stopping this ring that steals children? Can she trust Alton’s father, who is the sheriff? Will the elderly couple the sheriff sends them to for protection teach Lizzy what real trust and love is? Can Lizzy change her controlling ways and learn everything isn’t about her? Will facts and memories open Lizzy’s eyes on past events and give her freedom? As her mother use to quote – “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

THE EYES OF RIVER is such a riveting, spellbinding story it’s impossible to put down. As the characters come to life, you will feel yourself pulling for Lizzy and Alton. Cindy K. Sproles gives us an amazing story of hardship, false accusations, friendship, trust, love, acceptance, truth and wraps it all in a fabulous thread of faith. THE EYES OF RIVER is a stupendous FIVE-STAR book (deserves ten stars) that I highly recommend to everyone!

I received an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

I’ve enjoyed several of Mrs. Sproles’ books over the years. She writes with depth and authenticity, and this book was a no-brainer when I saw it become available.

Lizzy’s story drew me in immediately. Her love for her brother was a beautiful thing to witness, and I was startled but also delighted to see how Alton did his best to protect Lizzy, even when she kept him at arm’s length. I was heartbroken for her and her situation, and as the story went on, that didn’t change. I loved watching her trying to sort through things, especially the way her relationship with the Lord changed over the course of this book.

I was disappointed at the amount of internal dialogue that happened in this story. That surprised me, since I tend to love internal conflict, but in this case, some of it felt repetitive in the second half of the story. I understand why it was all there (and, honestly, that element was fairly realistic), but felt like it dragged down the story as a whole, to some extent.

Overall, though, this was a great historical read. I loved getting this different perspective on one historical event I’ve heard about elsewhere, and the mysterious element was excellent! Joe and Jerelene are quite possibly my favorite characters of the year so far…I loved every minute they were on the page! Their love and wisdom were spot-on! There are also hints of a sweet romance, which was absolutely darling (as well as bringing some much-needed lightness to the plot).

If you enjoy hard-hitting, convoluted stories with relatable characters, you’ll likely love this book.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.

This book filled my heart with longing to help out the children and just to step in and be their advocates. Lizzy Haney has always been a responsible girl, always taking care of her little brother River while her parents are abusive, mentally and emotionally in unimaginable ways. Once her mamma dies, Lizzy is keenly feeling that River needs to escape from their dad so she mails him to a friend. I was totally unaware that this was even a possibility, but the author’s sharp attention to details and research assured me that it was done at one time, so that was very informative. Anyway, the book is layered, with methodical revelations of what has really been happening behind the scenes in Lizzy’s life and the hardship that she has suffered. This is a character-based story, but it is also plot driven. The characters are relatable and so well-developed that they came to life into my heart. The plot is fast-moving and heart-breaking at times. There are so many problems that Lizzy has had to face alone in her young life. The themes of learning to trust God and how to forgive are prevalent as well as the hope for a bright future once the past is overcome. This Appalachian novel is memorable and exceptionally well-crafted by a master storyteller. The writing is crisp and the story is startling and at times breathtaking-stopping. I loved the book and got totally invested in the story and was engaged in it from beginning to end.

When Lizzy decided to post her brother to the care of a friend, she did it because it seemed the only option to keep them both safe. But when she's falsely accused of murder and then learns that he's failed to arrive, she's left desperate to find a way to save both their lives. Fortunately, friends help along the way, but how can she know who is a true friend when no one else seems to consider River's recovery their top priority? As she's hunted through the mountains by evil men who want her dead and forced to face facts that shake the foundation of her world, can she come to terms with her mother's favourite quote: the truth will set you free?

I had somewhat mixed feelings about this book. The writing was good, the story flowed well and there were some good messages in there, but I found it hard to like Lizzy. Her attitude is probably understandable given the horrible situation she grew up in, but her self-centredness and refusal to see the big picture got quite hard to take - even though I understood her need to find her brother. On the other hand, I loved several of the other characters who helped her along the way and tried to encourage her to maturity (and a tough job they had of it!). But perhaps what I found hardest about the book was the atmosphere. There's so much evil around, and while they do finally win, it gave the whole book a dark feel, which I didn't like. All in all, a suspense-full read that's far from your standard historical fiction, but it's on the dark side.

ROUGH DRAFT
"Oh Lordy, what have I done?"

When Lizzy Haney mails her younger brother to Knoxville, Tennessee by train she does so out of a healthy fear for his life; their vicious, mean father had threatened to kill River more than once, and after the demise of their mother, River was particularly vulnerable. It was his eyes. River had the sort of crystal green eyes that looked beneath the surface and straight into the soul of a person, and Lizzy's father had a lot of rot in his soul.

On the morning after River's departure, Lizzy is forced to go on the run after her father murders two men in cold blood and lays the blame on his daughter. Her friend Alton Mosley is in the right place at the right time and steps in to assist in her getaway. And these are just a few particulars from the first six chapters.

In addition to this book being a fractured family's journey towards the truth (because there are a lot of things that are not adding up in Lizzy's life story), it is also a deeply personal faith journey for a young woman who has lived in total fear and void of trust in anyone for her entire life. Those who care about her need Lizzy to trust in their judgement and to follow their instructions, but her continued missteps become a challenge to everyone's safety. Reaching a breaking point, Lizzy meets her Dear Father on the riverbank, and learns that prayer is a powerful ally and that true love is indeed possible.

A fascinating novel woven with threads of Appalachian culture, both beautiful and beastly!

Fresh and original story based on the real case of missing children in the early twentieth century. The story is told mostly from Lizzy's POV, a young woman on the run for a crime she did not commit. Lizzy's inner monologue grabbed me right away. The author skillfully pulls her readers into the setting and culture of the Appalachian mountains.

Lizzy's story broke my heart. Her journey to find her brother is also a journey of faith, one that involves breaking her spirit before she can grasp the truth, 'the truth that will set her free'. There were several interesting twists as Lizzy discovers that all she had known to be true, was not.

I think the reason I did not give this a 5 star rating is that the way her new found friends tried to change her way of thinking, by changing her brittle and defensive personality was not shown in a loving way. It was tough love. Yet my heart hurt for all she had suffered and rejoiced with her spirit that refused to be beaten. One cannot understand the love of a Heavenly Father, if one has not received love before.

This is the first book I have read by Ms. Sproles. I found her voice to be unique. Her love for the Appalachian people and their heritage is apparent in the vivid descriptions she pens. I look forward to returning to this setting in future stories.

How far would you go to protect a sibling? Lizzie knows her brother is in danger and decides to mail him to her mother's friend in Knoxville, where she knows he will be safe and taken care of. With River on his way to safety, she just needs to bide her time before she leaves and hopes her father doesn't realize that River is gone already. When two unsavory men show up looking for her father, chaos ensues with two people dead and Lizzie covered in blood. With the help of a friend, Lizzie goes on the run and she has a lot to learn to stay safe. She finds out that River never arrived in Knoxville and now she also has a bounty on her head. There is more going on than anything she could have ever imaged and trusting others will be the hardest thing she has ever done in her life. Used to only relying on herself, she struggles with now having to rely and trust others with her safety and finding River and the truth of what her father is all involved in and that the one person she loved and trusted above all else, is not who she believed them to be. Another well written historical story based in the Appalachian Mountains and on true events that happened. I really enjoyed how Lizzie's character was written, she had to grow up quite fast, yet she is just a young adult who didn't really get to be a child. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

The Eyes of River by Cindy Sproles
I have a couple of words Wow! Fantastic! I wish this all i could say but well I can't.
There's so much more to this story than meets the eye. Especially through the eyes of a child. They say the eyes are the windows to one's soul and I believe it to be true. Very true
Love and forgiveness are the heart of this story. Its tough to be quiet and listen. I know for a fact it is cause I'm just like Lizzy Haney.
Love is a wonderful thing. I wanted to leave a quote
“Thank you for sticking with me (Lizzy)
(Alton) “Shhh. It’s what you do when you love someone. You do what is necessary, and you do it for free.”
Jesus gave us His Love for free. "And the truth shall set you free."
I loved every minute of this story. I cried when it ended. It was so very good. I tried savoring this but well you know how I am with an awesome plot such as this one.
I loved all of these characters. Their strengths and determination to survive the mystery that was thrown into their lives is to be truly admired.
The author has done well to keep my interest all the way through. I was very emotional throughout this beautiful heartfelt story of love and healing forgiveness and trust. Im still thinking about them
I love this one too. And a child shall lead them Isaiah 11:6.
5 stars for a job well done!

Wow! This is an extraordinary book! The storyline was full of highs and lows. Times of blessings and times of loss. So many aspects of the story touched my heart.

The characters are written brilliantly! Lizzy is AMAZING! She has a few faults for sure, but she is loyal and she extends love in the only way she knows how to. Alton is a protector. He is kind, compassionate and trustworthy. Joe and Jerelene are quite the pair! They specialize in offering safety and restoration. Their tough love helps Lizzy to realize that she needs to change some things about herself. River is an old soul trapped in a 9 year old body. He's seen horrible things, but he's a survivor.

Lizzy tries to block her memories as much as she can. Her "parents" were involved in some nefarious activities: abducting children, r***, and murder. God feels very far away. But soon Lizzy realizes that He's always been there. "It's odd that even if you don't really believe in the good Lord, a body learns to pray when they're desperate." "The truth was, I'd seen several things I might have brushed off as a coincidence that now, knowing what I know, couldn't have been happenstance. All this time, I was looking for this invisible God and wondering if He was real."

I was provided a complimentary ARC copy of the book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Christian Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres. The Eyes of the River by Cindy K. Sproles is the most recent book that I have read.

The setting is 1913 in the Appalachian area of Tennessee. The main characters in this book are Lizzy Haney and Alton Mosley. Lizzy has had a rough life, especially due to her father being an alcoholic. Lizzy will do anything to save her younger brother, 9 years old, from going through the wrath of the Dad, as much as she has. She sends him off to be with a friends of her late mother and Lizzy hopes to reunite with him as soon as she can. Lizzy is even more determined to reunite with her brother when she discovers he didn't get to his destination. Alton, who is a childhood friend of Lizzy, is also wanting to help Lizzy and her Brother reunite. Lizzy leaves her town as she is now being accused of Murder, and she knows she is not a murderer. The book has many plot twists which really kept me intrigued. Lizzy stays strong throughout all the chaos of life and she actually grows in her faith. Alton is a wonderful character and he really is an integral part of Lizzy having the courage to run from her abusive father. The book is one of LOVE, FAITH, FAMILY and God's goodness. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction. AMAZING BOOK!

I just finished The Eyes of River, and it is a story that really sticks with you. It is set in the old Appalachian mountains and follows a young woman named Lizzy who is trying to clear her name of a crime she didn't commit. At the same time, she is desperately searching for her younger brother, River, whom she tried to save from their abusive home but who went missing along the way.

The book definitely deals with some heavy and serious topics, like abuse and betrayal, but I promise it doesn’t leave you feeling depressed. Instead of focusing just on the sad parts, the story is really about Lizzy’s incredible strength and the people who step up to help her. That is where her old classmate, Alton, comes in. He basically saves her by helping her escape and dodge the law, even when she is too guarded to make things easy for him. Watching their bond grow as they look for River is easily the best part of the book.

Cindy K. Sproles has a remarkable talent for capturing the raw, hard-edged beauty of early 20th-century Appalachia, and her novel, The Eyes of River, is a powerful testament to that skill. It is a fast-paced, suspenseful read, but it has a ton of heart. If you love historical fiction with strong characters and a message that leaves you feeling hopeful rather than down, I highly recommend picking this one up.

This was an interesting, albeit disturbing, story about secrets and lies and some truths you don't want to face. I liked the mystery aspect as first she's trying to find out what happened to River and then trying to learn the truth about her family. It got darker than I expected and there was mention of some pretty terrible things so I'd say this was a gritty story. We do see Lizzy grow and learn to wait and think sometimes instead of just react but she still made some epic dumb decisions. While she was trying to understand the truth of her family and memories she'd buried long ago, she was also learning she could be loved and could accept help and that maybe God did exist and care after all. There was action and danger but also introspection and some romance. Alton had a strong faith and was very logical and level-headed. I liked that Lizzy had to look past her preconceived notions of who he was. My favorite people were the husband and wife team of Joe and Jerelene. They had such love for everyone and put themselves to work helping people in need. This story ended up not really being what I expected but it was interesting and you might like it if you like gritty historical fiction.

If you are looking for a early twentieth century Christian fiction novel that is going to have you glued and on the edge of your seat then The Eyes of River is a story you definitely need to consider reading. I will admit this story did have me slightly freaked out but that is a clear sign that the story was a good one. If you are someone who is intrigued by adventure and dark family secrets this is definitely the book for you. You really have to admire the main character Lizzie as she goes on this journey not only to help her brother but also uncover some of her own past.

The Eyes of River is the first book I have read by this author. What a powerful story of survival and overcoming, of friendship and trust, growing in faith. From the very beginning, my heart hurt for Lizzy as she sends her little brother away to save his life. Little does she know, she soon will be on the run to save herself.

Lizzy has a hard life, and has learned to only depend on herself. So she doesn’t know what to do when her childhood friend Alton steps in. While Alton is determined to help and protect Lizzy, she is afraid to trust him and keeps getting herself into more trouble. Alton believes Lizzy and decides to risk everything to go on the run to save her and help find her brother, River. Lizzy’s lack of trust and refusal to depend on anyone but herself makes his job so much harder.

When Lizzy ends up in the care of an older couple, she finds a safe haven in their home. They begin to teach Lizzy how to trust and also show her she is loved. Their tough love helps Lizzy slowly change and I enjoyed seeing her faith blossom and grow. This is the kind of story that will linger. It’s not an easy read, but so well written and worth the journey.

First, I am a HUGE Cindy Sproles fan. I love her writing, the grittiness in her books, and the Appalachian setting.

The Eyes of River started out with a bang. I loved Lizzy and found her to be relatable. She was a flawed human, as we all are.

I thought Alton was wonderful, and his relationship with Lizzy was excellent. I liked how he loved her enough to call her out as needed.

I did not love how Lizzy was treated by everyone, including Alton by the end. They all kept telling her how selfish she was, when she'd spent her entire life taking care of everyone. No one could seem to understand why she had a hard time trusting when, again, her life had been extremely difficult. In fact, the only one who seemed to have anything good to say about her was Tilda.

There were a number of things that left me unsettled and dissatisfied, which is why this is rated the way it is. It started off so beautifully, but just seemed to get a little off the rails.

Again, I love Cindy's writing, and I was certainly intrigued throughout, but this one didn't hit the mark for me.

Angels unaware.
Father God’s love.
To everything there is a season…
And for Lizzy, the time has come to learn of trust and letting go. And learning what love is.
Ms. Sproles packs powerful story for her readers. The depth and honesty of the characters, the setting, the scenarios—all real and true to life. Which is something this reviewer appreciates and values.
Honestly, though, I wanted to jerk Lizzy up and give her a good shake; she created more problems for herself in the aftermath of [SPOILER.] But at seventeen, she has come by her mistrust and her need to take charge honestly. Years of abuse will do that to a body.
But God.
He always—always—provides a way. Lizzy was surrounded by so many people who loved on her, loved her through, who were patient with her as she learned God’s truth—she is loved.
Ms. Sproles offers her readers a powerful story of love and redemption, an allegory to His love for each one of us.

an atmospheric historical-fiction novel with some unexpected twists and turns!

it all starts when lizzy decides to mail her nine-year-old brother, river, to knoxville to keep him safe. of course, her plan goes awry, and she winds up on the run, wanted for murder, and maybe falling a little in love with the childhood friend she's never seen that way before.

the eyes of river is an adventure, for sure. lizzy makes some questionable decisions along the way, but she uncovers life-altering revelations and learns to trust God a little more with it all, too. it's a journey of ups and downs, plenty of emotion—and all the while, the appalachian setting feels very present and transporting.

i quite enjoyed this historical read. i think any historical reader, especially with a love for appalachia, will enjoy it, too.

(i received a complimentary copy from the author and/or publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)

considerations:
—language: none
—spice: kisses only
—faith: consistent christian themes and mentions
content: violence, death, mentions of loss of a parent, rape, abduction

Lizzy's life is rough. A drunken, abusive father. A mother who can't quite protect her children. And a brother, River, whom Daddy has threatened to kill.

Just like he kills Momma, one day.

With Momma no longer standing between Daddy and River, Lizzy knows she has to get River to a safe place. So she scrapes together the pennies required to buy postage stamps -- which she places on a card pinned to River's shirt. And despite his tears and pleas, she hands him to the postmaster at the train. She's sending River to their momma's friend, Miss Tilda, in Knoxville.

But River never arrives. And that's the beginning of Lizzy's hero's journey (well, heroine, to be exact), on which will come truth. Self-realization. Humility. And maybe love, coming from many directions.

I treasure this book. It is exceptionally beautiful, and true, in Lizzy's often-painful journey. There's so much outside of Lizzy's world, and inside her as well, that she's completely unaware of. Now, she just might find so much more than she was looking for.

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own honest ones.

Exceptional storytelling...
Beautifully authentic are the words I use to describe Cindy Sproles’ novel, The Eyes of River. As an East Tennessee girl, she knows Appalachia literally from the ground up. Her firsthand experience with the mountain towns and her love for those close-to-the-earth people have led her into rich stories filled with rugged characters and their many hardships. The graphic antagonists only get meaner. Those who desire to be better than their history made them, strive against what seem to be insurmountable odds. An angry Lizzy, her nine-year-old brother River, an awkward but wise Alton, and the honest but ‘by the book’ sheriff end up on a journey for survival and justice in the middle of a mystery no one would have chosen to pursue. The need to be cared for and the resilience of the human spirit in spite of circumstances are this novel's themes. Every reader will relate to the dilemma of trust broken and hearts healed, but the real question in this story is: Will ‘the truth make you free’ even when if breaks your heart?

The Eyes of River, by Cindy K. Sproles is a Christian historical story that takes place in Tennessee in the early 1900's. This story is so good! It contains action, suspense and mystery as well as is a story about family and friendships. The writing is very clear and the story kept evolving as I read. This is a book that was hard to put down. The story shows how much Lizzy loves her younger brother and the extreme she will go to keep him safe. And it shows how Alton is there to help her when things go very wrong at home. I enjoyed the character of Lizzy with all her little quirks. She is so caring for her younger brother and so determined to do things her way, even when she shouldn't.

I deeply enjoyed how the author has written in events that happened into the story. I found the story interesting in that children could be sent through the mail. The story contains subjects such as abuse, alcoholism and child trafficking. I especially enjoyed reading the authors notes at the end.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

What a wonderful job the author did with this book!
A read that kept giving from beginning to end, so you don't get to comfortable, because something new was about to happen.
This read does deal with some very tough subjects, and there is a lot of abuse, and disregard for human life, and while this is a fictional read it is based on some fact!
What starts out as a very dysfunctional family, but this could all be true, but there is so much more here. Yes, I have heard of mailing children, and that is where we begin this read, but the reasons and what happens next is so deep.
This is a compelling page turner, and part about the children, very disturbing!
The author did a great job of wrapping up this story, and we are left adding our own hopes for reconciliation, and hopes for Lizzy and Alton!
Be sure to read the Author's Notes!

✨What if the only thing more dangerous than being hunted is the truth waiting to be uncovered?

The Eyes of River by Cindy K. Sproles is set in the rugged Appalachian Mountains of the early 1900s. This historical fiction novel follows Lizzy Haney as she runs from a false murder accusation while desperately searching for her missing younger brother, River.

Lizzy's determination, courage, and love for her brother kept me invested from start to finish. The Appalachian setting felt vivid and authentic, and the story balanced suspense, faith, heartbreak, and hope beautifully. While some moments were emotional and difficult to read, they added depth to Lizzy's journey toward freedom and truth. I especially appreciated how the story explored trust, family bonds, and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

✨️Thank you to Kregel and Cindy K. Sproles for sharing The Eyes of River with me!

First thing, just look at this cover and it draws you right in. Then, then the story! I am speechless after reading this book. Do you enjoy stories that have true historical elements in them? How about a story that will tug on your heartstrings and have your blood run cold at the same time? If so, this book has that and more. Lizzy has mailed her brother to get away from their drunken father who wants to kill him. Now Lizzy is on the run with a childhood friend after being accused of murder. The secrets that will come out while you read will leave your mouth hanging open and maybe even going back to reread to make sure that you read it right. I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review , all thoughts and opinions are what I thought of the story.
