Savagely Sweet Barbarians #1

The Barbarian's Heart

Rate this book
After losing my bondmate to illness, I’d accepted that my time to love was in the past. I promised her on her death bed that I’d never take another bondmate, and I meant it.

Instead I’ve lived my life to serve my clan, lending my assistance when they needed me and continuing to act as clan leader while Uttin traveled from town to town, freeing those who were forced to hide who they loved. I told myself devotion was enough.

I never expected one of those townsfolk to sway my heart.

He looked at me not as a leader or a legend, but as a man. An equal. Someone worthy of soft smiles and unguarded hope.

Loving him would mean breaking the last promise I made to the woman I lost. This choice could be the one that finally breaks me, or it could put my heart back together again.

The Barbarian’s Heart is book one in the series, Savagely Sweet Barbarians, by Amy Padilla. This is a spin off of the Not So Savage Barbarians Series. While it isn’t required that you read that series first, if you have, you will better understand this world. I adore my barbarians and was so thrilled to see that we get more of them. This is the clan leader, Orthorr’s book.

Orthorr is fifty seven years old. He is the clan leader of the Northern Clan and has been for a very long time. As times are changing, he is ready to turn over the leadership to his second in command, Uttin. But while Uttin is away, he is still acting as leader. Orthorr had a bond mate, a woman he loved deeply. But, when she died from an illness, he vowed to never love another woman again. He was happy devoting himself to his clan.

In the barbarian’s clans, they don’t care who you love, man or woman. But, in the towns, life is different. It is against the law to desire someone of the same sex, often punishable by death. When the clans started accepting male tributes as well as female, word got out that there was a safe place where a man could love whoever he wanted. So a group, led by Uttin, has been traveling from town to town to give safe passage to anyone wanting to join them. The response was much more than they ever imagined. It was on their first expedition that Cedric left his town and traveled with the barbarians to the Northern Clan.

Cedric is forty years old. He has lived his life hiding who he truly is, resigning himself that he will never be able to fall in love, to experience having a true partner, a home and family. Until the offer came about that they could join the barbarians. When he first arrived, he was nervous. The first time he saw a man kiss another man, he was waiting for the reaction of others. When none came, he was in awe. Could it really be possible that he might finally be free to live his life the way he had only ever dreamed of?!

The first time Cedric saw Orthorr, he was smitten. He had no experience with men since it was always forbidden. But he tried his best to flirt, only to have Orthorr say that he could never give his heart to another after the loss of his mate. The more time they spent together, though, the more Orthorr grew to admire and respect Cedric. He was still torn about giving his affections to another but he knew he was falling for this beautiful man.

This was such a sweet story. I think what really got me was that these people had been forced their entire lives to keep their true selves hidden. Now they are in awe that they are actually free to fall in love with whoever they wish. That these barbarians who they were always told were savages, were actually sweet, kind and courteous. Protective and caring. Watching Orthorr finally give in to his heart was such a beautiful thing. And watching Cedric’s self confidence grow as he and Orthorr got closer was wonderful.

I love these barbarians. The next book is called Escaping to the Barbarians and I can’t wait to read it.

The barbarians are back!

The first book in this spin-off series features Orthorr, who was the clan leader until he retired in the last book of the Not-So-Savage Barbarians. His love interest is Cedric, a minor government official who chose to leave with the barbarians to escape oppression and homophobia.

What I noticed while reading this story is that I mostly remember the previous male "tributes" but not their barbarians, who all blend into one generic prototype: protective, loyal, fuck like gods.

Cedric and Orthorr are older (40 and 57 respectively), which was cool, but other than that it was more of the same: complete lack of relationship development, scattered plot, sex, bonding.

As is typical of the barbarian books, the first half was far better than the second because once the MCs got together, there was no conflict of any kind.

Pure brain candy!

Him lucid dreaming his dead wife explicitly telling him to go get some - instead of having any actual emotional growth - was fucking weird. There was 0 relationship development. They supposedly spent several weeks together going over paperwork and became friends but we see absolutely none of that. And then he just ASKS to kiss him right after apologizing with no preamble? God this is fucking boring. There's no emotion or deeper connection, it's just a disjointed mess of insta-love scenes. Have we forgotten what the word 'romance" means?

I’d seen the sun rise over snow peaked mountains, dazzling me with its sparkle. I’d seen the winds dance through the plains while feeling the sun beating on my skin. Recently, I’d seen the sun set over the ocean, feeling the crashing waves in my chest. None of it was as beautiful as the man in my arms. When he smiled at me, it felt as though the world stood still, and I fell a little more for him with each breath. - Orthorr

Cedric seeks refuge and acceptance with the barbarians due to his inclinations towards men. Once brought to the clan, he falls for Orthorr, the clan’s previous leader. Orthorr lost his bondmate, Tessa, to illness and has vowed to stay alone for years, that is, until Cedric is brought into his life. This story has two older MCs who share many firsts with each other (one a virgin and one never having been with a man) and find their HEA with each other. No crazy drama, no unnecessary break ups, just two older men falling in love.

🤔Quick Thoughts:🤔

⭐ ️4/5, Loved the start to the new series and happy Orthorr found his HEA and 2nd forever love. The only reason I took off one star was because I did not like the abrupt ending. After Cedric’s conversation with the other bondmates around the fire, I was really hoping to get an epilogue with Cedric and Orthorr . I think that and a hint at what book 2 will be about would have sealed the deal for me.

🌶️ 2.5/5, I feel like compared to the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series, this one has more spicy scenes and more conversation about the spice. It was a Virgin MC coming together with a MC without experience with men, so there were lots of first times.

💭 While this is technically a stand-alone, and can be enjoyed without other books in this universe, reading Padilla’s Not-So-Savage Barbarians series will help with sorting out the side characters that appear. I will list the characters and their books farther down. I feel like this has been one of the better barbarian-like stories I have read. The universe feels old-timey without modern luxuries and the clans really heavily on their lands and what they can create by hand. There is language unique to this universe like pet names and the names of creatures and cultural items/languages. I also loved that there was no big “hoopla” around the fact that Orthorr was attracted to a man. I am burnt on books that have the MCs spiral around the idea (not that it’s not valid, I have just read too many in the past).

💁‍♂️Main Characters:💁‍♂️

Cedric: 40 years old, virgin, Clerk of Petitions (government position dealing with their paperwork/contracts)

Orthorr of the Northern Clan: 57 years old, widowed, ex-Clan Leader (stepped down and selected someone else)

🛑⚠️Trigger/Content Warnings: ⚠️🛑

- Mentions of a Deceased Partner (illness, off page)
- Homophobia
- Safe Sex/Protection & Traditional Lube, neither are a “thing” in this universe/time

😰😓My Limits:😓😰

Sharing: No
Cheating: No
OW/OM: No, there is someone who flirts with an MC but it is not encouraged and nothing comes of it.

Reviewer Note: I think I give stars away way too easily but I can’t help myself. It can be safely assumed all of my reviews are from books that the animal lives, are 1st Person, have a HEA, and have no intimate or spicy scenes with anyone/thing other than MC(s) unless otherwise detailed. I try to rate books objectively if they have something I don’t typically like (i.e. Break Ups, SA, 3rd Person, Single POV, Sharing Partners). If it’s still written well the author deserves the praise but I will make note to avoid for myself in the future. I do my best to mark different triggers/warnings as well as the intimate acts performed in case anything listed/done might not be something you would want to read. If M/M, Age Play, Interspecies, Insta Love, Erotica, MPreg, or Incest are something you actively avoid, you are probably better off avoiding most of the books I review.

DNF: Something off, couldn’t finish because of it. Maybe me, maybe the book.
1 Star: Just.. Just no, thanks. Do not recommend it. Need mind eraser.
2 Stars: Oh that was something but it was not something for me or the author really fell short on this one.
3 Stars: Decent, enjoyed enough. Hit marks it was supposed to but something turned me off from it.
4 Stars: Really enjoyed it, better than I though it would be. Would recommend.
5 Stars: I can see myself reading this again. Thoroughly enjoyed. Would recommend.

All I have to say is, The Barbarians Heart, is an excellent starter book for the Savagely Sweet Barbarians series! A spin off of the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series, it continues where the last NSSB book left off, and we find the clan adjusting in the kingdom of Al Nuzem.

Uttin, the new clan leader, has married Prince Zakai, and they've been going town to town and city to city, picking up any people who want to leave or are kicked out. While most places are accepting to same sex couplings, a lot of them are against and gladly kick men with that "affliction" out of their homes. This is how we meet Cedric.

Orthorr, former clan leader from the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series, is temporarily clan leader while Uttin is on the road. He continues to take care of his people, who are still getting used to living in one place, and so close to a city, let alone a kingdom. When Uttin returns with the latest batch of "refugees" he meets Cedric, who was a clerk back in his city.

Orthorr sees value in that and asks for his help in understanding paperwork between the clan leaders and kingdoms, which isn't really his job, since his position is temporary but who else can do it with Uttin gone. Cedric is shy at first but agrees to help, and immediately feels attracted to Orthorr.

Unfortunately, Orthorr has never been with a man and has already been bonded to a woman, Tessa, in the past. Plus, there's a bit of an age gap and that leaves Orthorr a little insecure but Cedric sees more than age. To be fair Orthorr is pretty fit for his age with all the wood chopping he does.

Orthorr has never been attracted to men before, so his attraction to Cedric is like a second coming of age for him. Sometimes we can't help who we are attracted to or have feelings for, regardless of our past. There's still more story outside of theirs, surrounding the outside clans, towns, cities and kingdoms, but you really can't help rooting for Orthorr and Cedric.

My honest rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Special thanks to the Author for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

TBR, who? ARCS, what? Here's Amy Padilla's latest: "Barbarian's Heart." It's the first novel in her Savagely Sweet series, which is a Not-So-Savage Barbarian's spin-off.

["After losing my bondmate to illness, I’d accepted that my time to love was in the past. I promised her on her death bed that I’d never take another bondmate, and I meant it.

Loving him would mean breaking the last promise I made to the woman I lost. This choice could be the one that finally breaks me, or it could put my heart back together again."]

My GOD! D: These two were adorable as hell. From Cedric's love of paperwork to Urthorr's love of family, they were perfect for each other. Okay, that doesn't make it seem like they are, but they are. They're both soft but fierce, family-oriented, wanting safety and peace for their friends, serious but easy to laugh/tease, hopeful for a brighter future.

Their chemistry was instant. And with all of the previous tribute's help, there wasn't a language barrier or a miscommunication in the very beginning. They clicked and felt safe following that connection. And then it grew and grew and exploded in a fiery storm of steam and fluff to end all steam/fluff.

This new series has SO much potential!! I can't wait for all of the new couples (and a possible poly???)!!

This series is a spin off of the Not So Savage Barbarians series, and while this is the first of a new series, I can highly recommend that series as the backdrop to this as a lot of the characters are recurring. Orthorr himself we meet in that series, but Cedric is new.

A lot has changed for our sweet barbarians, no longer nomadic and no longer collecting tributes, now they take townsfolk who want to escape the confines and old fashioned attitudes of the towns, often escaping in fear for their lives. This is Cedric's story, leaving with the barbarians as he can no longer live a lie after a life in government service spent hiding who he really is. As such, he's never been with another man as he lived such a hidden life and feared the consequences so much. Orthorr is a bit older, and lost his previous wife some years ago, and now thinks that part of his life is over.

The two are drawn together, with Cedric's government experience being extremely useful to Orthorr as interim clan leader helping negotiate the new treaties and pacts to set up the new life for the clans and people flocking to the barbarians for a better life. The two are drawn together, and the chemistry is there, even though Orthorr initially denies it. Soon the two embark on a journey of discovery - neither having been familiar with being another man in that way. Cue a hilarious and toe-curling encounter with Simon from the previous series, imparting his wisdom as only Simon can.

This is low angst, fairly spicy and I'm so happy to be back in the author's Barbarian world, I was hoping for Orthorr to get a story and I wasn't disappointed. Cedric and Orthorr just fit together so well and I can't wait to find who is next in this series.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

4⭐️ 2🌶️
MOOD: lighthearted
TROPES: later in life romance
GENRES: historical-ish, lgbtq+ romance
MAIN CHARACTERS: Orthorr and Cedric

THE GOOD: Orthorr finally gets a story. Both characters are older which was a nice change of pace. The Barbarian clans are also in a different place too - working on alliances and a new way of life. Cedric and Orthorr work together to navigate that new life and something more. Both Cedric and Orthorr have been alone and lonely, respectively, for too long. This is a great start to a spin-off series. I know I'm going to get a short sweet story without too much angst or conflict.
THE NEUTRAL: Cedric seems too young at times. I was happy to see older characters, and it could be because there are younger characters around or because the last Barbarian book I read had Matthew in it and he was younger, but at time Cedric comes across young - not inexperience - but young and naive and given his role in town that wouldn't be the case.
THE MEH: There is a good deal going on in the world of the Barbarians. Since I hadn't read the whole other series, I felt a little lost.

I would highly suggest reading at least one book from Amy's other series first, Not-So-Savage-Barbarians. Orthorr is introduced in that series as well as some of the other characters. I had only read one of those books, The Barbarian's Claim, and was a little confused for this book. So maybe read the last book, Prince of the Barbarians, for the plot necessities not for all the characters that will be mentioned in this book.

CW: sexual content, homophobia
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was very happy when I hear there was going to be a spin-off to the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series by Amy Padilla. I loved that series and read or listened to the books multiple times.

The first book in the Savagely Sweet Barbarians series could be read as a stand-alone, maybe. There is a lot that would be helpful from the original series in regards to characters, and events that have happened. It would make the enjoyment of Orthorr and Cedric’s HEA so much better knowing the history behind the clans and their current situation.

I loved Orthorr as a character in the original series and love that he was finally able to be happy with a partner. He was stubborn but some intervention got him realizing that he deserves happiness. Cedric was a government employee in his town and is a bit older than most of the other townsfolk who are leaving for better lives. It means he takes on a bit of responsibility and has the knowledge to help Orthorr when he needs it. They are so beyond adorable as a couple.

I think I was on page 5 when I messaged a friend to tell them they needed to read this. It is everything of the original series but also so much more as the lives of the barbarians and the townsfolk change. I can’t wait to read more in this series and have hopes for some townsfolk, barbarians and new friends in their new country.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I'm so glad we didn't leave the Not So Savage Barbarians universe. The last few books in the series seemed to expand the worldbuild rather than wind it down. Maybe in prep for Savagely Sweet Barbarians? "The Barbarian's Heart", the first book in the new series, takes a supporting character from the previous and gives him a very nice HEA.
Orthorr and Cedric were a lovely match. Both thought that they'd finish their lives alone. Cedric hid his nature for almost 40 years. He did try to work to change his town council's prejudice about men loving men. But the bias was too ingrained. Leaving his home for the scary unknown was mighty brave of him.
Orthorr was held hostage to a dying woman's selfish promise. "Don't forget me. Don't bond with another." In other words, don't be happy ever again. I have strong feelings about that kind of manipulation. I'm so glad he was able to move on. I liked that they were both older and came from positions of authority. It made the chase-resisist- bond seem more authentic.
The found family of the Northern Clan made for great cameos. Finn and Simon were so adorable. Pair of troublemakers. Reeled in (maybe?) by their still besotted mates.
Something old, something new. A quick, comfortable read. Looking forward to more sweet cinnamon roll barbarians.

I wish I could say otherwise but… I’m afraid I found this read boring.

Nothing really happened plot-wise (the most interesting thing that happened didn’t even happen to our characters). We’re told our MCs spend a lot of time together and become close, but it feels very insta-love.
I feel like this was a missed opportunity to do something interesting with a man stepping down from leadership and needing to learn who he is again, without that title he’s borne for so many years, but despite the constant “Uttin is leader now”, Orthorr acted as leader pretty much his whole book any way. They also could have explored the ‘older’ romance, with both characters being 40+, but other than some remarks about how Orthorr doesn’t look his age, the age thing and the, what, 15-ish year age gap were all pretty irrelevant. The MCs felt very generic.
There were some cute moments, like finding Cesric and carrying him to ‘where he belonged’ but they were few and far between.

With minor on-page relationship development and minor plot development…what were all those pages for? Hopefully there’s a bit more purpose to the next book. I’ve really enjoyed most of the other books I’ve read by this author, I will continue on and hope the next book lands better for me.

Savagely Sweet Barbarians is a spin off series from the Bot-So-Savage Barbarians series. Through that entire first series, I grew to love the clan and Orthorr, the clan leader. It always made me sad that he didn’t have a bond mate.

Now the series has moved on. The clan has settled closer to the city that Zakai is from. More clans have chosen to come together and rescue people from the towns. When Cedric makes the choice to leave for a better life, he doesn’t know quite what he is walking into.

When Cedric meets Orthorr, you can sense his attraction to him. Orthorr was never planning on mating again. When his first bond mate Tessa comes to him in a dream, she tells Orthorr how foolish he is for turning his back on happiness. That is what Orthorr needed to hear in order to move forward.

I love this story! I knew that Orthorr was older, but 57?! The scene with Finn where he interrupts him chopping wood was hilarious. That Simon teased him as well was adorable. I love that everyone is still together and that when Orthorr needed help he went to Simon. This series has my heart and I can’t wait to see who else author Amy Padilla is going to write about

The Barbarian's Heart is the first book in the new Savagely Sweet Barbarians series by Amy Padilla. I loved the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series and was excited to see a spinoff series. I couldn't put this book down once I started it and I spent most of the night reading. This is the story of Orthorr and Cedric. Om my goodness did I enjoy this book. Orthorr has always been a favorite of mine from first meeting him but because he had and lost his female bond mate I never expected to have a story about him. The blurb gives you a great idea of what to expect in the story but not how it unfolds. I loved the age gap, Cedric awakening, relationship building that went into this book. These two are just perfect for each other. We still have so much to learn with the as the clan settles into their new kingdom. I love the characters and world building that is going into this new series. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book as a 5 star read.

First in spin off series (Savagely Sweet Barbarians). Age gap. Mature characters. Found family. Dual POV.

Cedric decides to voluntarily leave his town when the barbarians offer sanctuary, having lived his life thinking he would never find love, he hopes it’s not too late. Orthorr is finally handing over the mantle of clan leader, and he thought he was alright living the rest of his life alone until Cedric comes along and his helpfulness and sweetness tug at Orthorr’s heart strings.

Even as a spin off series, this book continues this universe that is filled with cinnamon roll barbarians that are absolutely committed once they find their special person. Both Cedric and Orthorr are new to being in a relationship with another man, but once they declare their attraction they are dedicated and wholly smitten with each other. I enjoyed that Orthorr didn’t take long to embrace the possibility of loving again, and that these two had some steamy first experiences together. A nice start to the series, I look forward to more of course. 4.5 rounded up

Glad to be back with the Barbarians

I loved the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series and Orthorr, the clan leader, was a constant presence throughout that series so I was happy that Amy was starting a new series and he had the honour of kicking it off.
Orthorr and Cedric's story was actually very sweet. Neither one had any experience with sex with a man, Cedric being gay and a virgin and Orthorr had only had female partners. Watching Orthorr be so gentle with Cedric was lovely, taking care of him and giving Cedric the confidence he badly needed.
It was good to see familiar faces too. Finn, Simon, Patrick, Zoya and Uttin to name a few.
I have to admit that this story didn't have the same depth as the others in the first series, and it read more like a prequel setting up the series. Time was spent away from the camp, dealing with problems caused by the towns and liaising with the King. That doesn't mean I didn't like it because I did, and I'm looking forward to see what happens now the clans are settling into their new home.

Orthorr being the good clan leader that he is decides to pass the torch to Uttin to bring youth to the leadership of his clan. When the barbarians now allied with the kingdom of Al Nuzem get word to the villages those who seek refuge can choose to join them. Cedric having always know that he is gay takes his shot at true happiness. When brought to the clan they learn Cedric understands government language, helps Orthorr understand and in turn the two begin a friendship. Having lost his previous bondmate, Orthorr fears his feelings and pushes the man away. Thanks to our previous lovely barbarians and their mates he seeks guidance and starts to see its good to move on and try for another chance. I found this one to fit the feeling of the earlier books making me love it as much as those. It's fun to see how each of these pairings have grown throughout and looking forward to seeing this new stage of the barbarians way of life.

I'm thrilled to be back in this world with a new spin-off series! This is a mature, age-gage romance between a 40 year-old virgin, Cedric, and Orthorr, the outgoing leader of a barbarian tribe. Cedric has voluntarily left his town, a place where same-sex relationships can spell death. Accepted into the barbarian tribe, he spots Orthorr and is immediately drawn to the older man in his late-fifties.

Orthorr, who we've met in the earlier series, never plans to mate again. After losing the love of his life years ago, he's sworn off anyone else. Still, if anyone could change his mind, it would be the sweet and kind Cedric. When he learns that Cedric is experienced in working on government paperwork in his previous position, the two men begin to work together in legal matters in joining a new allied kingdom. This book is very enjoyable. I look forward to Bk 2!

Orthorr has been a steady presence in the previous Barbarian series as the strong, but empathetic clan leader. Now he's stepped down and settling into his new life, his new home when he meets Cedric.
Cedric is a former gov't clerk, looking to escape the prejudice of the towns and finally live his life free from bigotry. He's brave but kind and socially aware. When his gov't experience leads to him helping out Orthorr with treaty documents and paperwork for the settlement....warmth and a connection form!

A semi bi-awakening for Orthorr and a first time for Cedric that's full of heat and consent and respect.
Very fluffly, no angst love story with two later in life mcs. Reading this felt a lot like eating cotton candy, just so sweet and lovely, but sometimes I wished it had a wee bit more body.

The first book in the follow-on series from Not So Savage Barbarians. These books are like candy - overly sweet, but great in small quantities.

The Clans are camping outside the capital of Al Nazum and sending scouting parties out to collect any from the towns who wish to join them. Cedric, is a government official fed up with hiding and decides to take the terrifying leap to leave town and join the Barbarians. Orthorr is looking forward to a quiet, but probably lonely retirement after passing the mantel of Clan Leader to Uttin.

This was a really sweet, zero angst tale of two lonely men finding each other, and love in middle age. They made a great pair - loving, supportive, equal. I'm looking forward to seeing where this new series goes.

I super enjoyed “The Barbarian’s Heart”!!! Also really loved that we get Orthorr’s story after seeing snippets of him in the last series. Orthorr’s grief and his struggle with the promise he made to his late bondmate felt really real, and I loved how Cedric slowly breaks through his walls just by treating him like a normal person instead of a legend.

The romance between them is really soft and healing, but there’s definitely some good spice too once things start developing between them. It felt balanced—emotional first, but still with some satisfying steamy moments. Overall it’s a really touching story about second chances, learning to love again, and realizing that moving forward doesn’t mean you’re betraying the past. I finished it feeling very soft about these two. 💙

This book starts just after Prince of the Barbarians and follows up with the timeline nicely.
Orthorr was a secondary character in every book of the previous series and he is important in most of them, so having him meeting his match was amazing. Not only that, him finding joy and love after so much time grieving is treated in a very careful and realistic way.
Cedric is a very sweet character, always trying to protect those he can, a hard worker and the perfect partner to Orthorr. They are truly partners putting each other first.
As with every book by the author, it's well written, with an impecable editing and easy to read, having a solid plot and heat enough to keep you warm.
Don't miss it!

Cedric and Orthorr story was endearing with a couple of rough moments at the beginning when indecision and stubbornness prevailed.
It’s finally time for Orthorr time to a second chance at happiness and Cedric is perfect for him in every sense.
It’s time for decisions and changes, for prosperity and thriving while keeping happiness as a goal.
After getting over the hurdles along the way they are truthful and sweet to each other, loving and considerate, as well as happy as they could be with all the events that made everything possible.
I really enjoyed the read, and I’m looking forward to the next adventure.

What a great start to a spinoff series of the Not so Savage Barbarians. Orthorr was the clan leader of the Northern barbarians but decided to step down to let the younger members let their voices be heard. Cedric left his town due to the fact he lived 40 years without knowing someone’s touch. Meeting Orthorr, he was fascinated by him. When Finn told him about Orthorr needing help with documents, he agreed as he worked for the government in his home town. They were really sweet with each other and helped each other out. I loved these books way they interacted and fell in love ni cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Wonderful

What a wonderful story! This book is as sweet as the Series Title. Orthorr the Northern Clan Leader is slowly stepping back so Uttin can take over. What he didn’t expect was a sweet soul named Cedric who caught his attention. He’s prior bondmate had passed away years before and he vowed to never take another. But Tessa wasn’t having it and came to him in his dreams to set him straight. Together the love between Cedric and Orthorr grew stronger than the two expected. This story is so beautiful I cannot wait to see what Amy Padilla has in store for us. A job well done it deserves so many stars 🌟 but alas I can only give it 5 stars 🌟💜❤️

Wonderful & sweet love story

Another great story in the Barbarian series.

Cedric escapes his town to go with the barbarians hoping for a future where he can love who he wants. He meets the older, outgoing clan leader, Orthorr, and pretty much falls for him immediately. But Orthorr not only has never been attracted to men, he also believes since his first bondmate passed that he is destined to live his life alone.

It was really sweet to see how Orthorr falls for Cedric and how wonderful they are together. Cedric is sweet and innocent and Orthorr is very romantic. I love the original barbarians series and this spin off series and look forward to all the coming books!

I really love the barbarian series. Im so happy that we finally get to learn more about Orthorr (and that scene with finn at the beginning when Orthorr is chopping wood is soo funny). Cedric and orthorr are just perfect for each other. They are both learning what it means to have an open same sex relationship and there is something so sweet about them doing this together. I really enjoyed their story and i cant wait for more stories in this series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The clan from the Not-So-Savage series is in a transitional stage where they are in Zakai's home country and are gathering new members before they move to their new "permanent" location. So, Orthorr is as surprised as the rest of the clan when he finds himself attracted to Cedric. I liked how easily they got out of their own way and connected. If you are looking for something really sweet, medium spicy, and low angst, this is the book for you.

I noted less than a dozen proofreading issues in the ARC.

This was such a sweet story, I have loved getting to know all these barbarians, their stories have been so sweet and caring and this one is no exception.
Orthorr was the clan leader but he has stepped aside to allow a younger man to lead, also he previously had a bondmate but she died some time ago and he is not looking for a new relationship. But as he gets to know Cedric, through working together, he is fighting an attraction to him. I loved the glimpses we got at Orthorr's bondmate and her talk to him.

Orthorr & Cedric

"Not even my wildest dreams had that much muscle."

I love the hopefulness that the beginning of the story brings to all the new people that have joined the barbarians. Orthorr has been a wonderful man to get to know since the beginning, and it was wonderful to read his story, learn his past, and witness his easy fall for Cedric though he did try to fight it a little. But his loyalty to his first bondmate was admirable and loving, so seeing him consider those feelings before choosing Cedric was perfectly acceptable. I love that both MCs in this story are older, and that they don't shy away from addressing that fact. Cedric's 40 years pale in comparison to Orthorr's impressive older age, but neither man lets their age truly push away their growing feelings and their physical love.

I absolutely loved The Barbarian's Heart, and I'm so excited to really get going with this new series. The barbarians have been such an incredible community to learn about and follow for several stories now, and I'm looking forward to learning more. Each new couple & romance adds a new side of their story, and it's a lot of sweet, generally wholesome fun.

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
