Chocolate, pastries and a dash of love

Rate this book
When you jam enchanted ingredients, a rising romance, and a fiery ex into one baking competition, there's sure to be a burnt tart or two.

Rowan has held the title of Best Baker in Brindlewood for five years, perfecting recipes instead of risking his heart again after being burned by love. But with the annual bake-off around the corner and a charming new rival across the square, Rowan finds that this year's contest might be his most stirring yet. Especially when a flame from his past shows up, adding more heat than he bargained for.

Serena Rose left her quiet town behind for a fresh start and opens her own magical pastry shop just in time to join the village's beloved baking competition. She offers a welcoming smile, cosy flavours, and stirs magic into her recipes as easily as she does sugar. What Serena doesn't expect is the flurry of gossip, the surprise of true belonging, or the local baker whose warm brown eyes prove more distracting than any recipe gone wrong.

As cakes rise and tempers flare, it's not just the title on the line. But perhaps something even sweeter.

Chocolate, pastries and a dash of love is a cosy, romantic tale filled with buttery layers, magical mishaps, and a rivalry baked to perfection.

It’s the final day of the blogtour and the day before release day!

The new story ‘Chocolate, pastries and a dash of love’ from S. van Toor welcomes you all to Brindlewood! A small town where the streets are filled with the most delicious scents and swirls of magic as the town prepares for the annual baking competition. Contestants from different places all come to Brindlewood with one goal; prove that their baked goods are the best. Rowan Thymell, Brindlewoods local champion, has won several championships and aims to continue his winning streak. Trusting his baking skills, and his skills only, he has defeated year in and year out both magical as well as non-magical users. But the new pastry chef in town adds another dimension to her baked goods with her sentimental and heartwarming magic. Will Serena Rose snatch both his title and heart in the process?

Chocolate, pastries and a dash of love has all the ingredients you need. Reading during the fall period will, just like Serena’s magic, even enhance the experience. One tablespoon of fluff, two teaspoons of jealousy, one cup of cozy small town vibes and a pinch of magic and that makes up the recipe for this cute cosy romance with a sliver of fantasy.
The short chapters make it a quick read and the flavour palettes will make your mouth water. A perfect treat in between heavy book(meal)s I would say, since this one is quite light and fun.

In the beginning it took me quite some time to get used to the English and the writing. I missed more showing elements instead of telling and some translation aspects were quite literal. But that’s more personal interest instead of storywise. I also felt some aspects could have been worked out better, for example the situation with Serena and her teammates felt a bit hasty as well as the judging of the team assignments. Therefor it lost some credibility for me personally.

It must be said that it’s a fun, cute read. Just a blanket, your favourite hot beverage, baked goods, lit candles and this book is all you need if you are into cosy cute romances with a pinch of fantasy.

Chocolates, Pastries and a Dash of Love by S. Van Toor

Serena has just moved into town. She's a pastry chef and she's trying to set up a shop on her own.

But, the town already has a star, Rowan the Baker. He's so good, in fact, that he's won the annual baking showdown 5 years in a row.

Here's the thing - Rowan's known for not using magic in his baking. But Serena - her magic enhances her baking in a *truly* magical way.

Can Rowan still win the baking competition? Or will Serena ruin his winning streak?

As the two compete for the town's heart as well as first place, they may even find themselves competing to win even more.

This is such a cozy fantasy! The FMC & MMC are different, but they both share a love for baking that allows them to have a shared connection, err, competitiveness. 😆

Vibes are - Great British Bake Off competition styling, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory magical sweets, and also kind of A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, but chill.

I was that kid who dreamt of Willy Wonka foods coming to life. This book brought me back to that time, reminiscing over magic and food.

I wish I could eat a piece of candy that would warm your heart during winter or bring you cozy feelings when you're feeling a bit lonely.

Oh! And there was a reporter that kept reminding me of Elsie Penworthy from Princess Diaries 2. Every time their part came up, I totally read it in her voice and affect. 😃

It gave cozy gossipy small town vibes like Stars Hollow from the Gilmore Girls.

This was just a joy to read!

If you like cozy fantasy, baking romance, or were that Willy Wonka candy dreamer, you may like this book.

This book is really cute! It has some magical mouthwatering baking as well as a cute romance. Even though I know the baking creations are made up, I would really love to try one of Serena's autumn macarons. This book is a lot about baking, but also has a great storyline underneith.

Slow burn romance, he falls first, the boy next door and magical baking, this book just has it all! I truly devoured Chocolate, pasties and a dash of love. This book is a real pageturner and I just couldn’t put it down. I would highly recommend reading this story to those looking for a romance to swoon over!

This was such an adorable, sweet and fun, hug in a book that could not have come at a better time. It was easy to read and had me turn pages without stopping because I was completely engrossed in this magical story that made me fall in love with Serena and Rowan and the cute town that is Brindlewood. I was lucky to have just won a chocolate bar from the opening at the supermarket nearby because you will crave sweetness and you’ll be filled with inspiration to try and recreate some of these delicious recipes that are described so beautifully. The added element of magic that ensures Serena’s baked goods can fill people with emotions that will help them process and get through certain aspects of their lives is so sweet. And the other magical component that is specific to the town she’s from will tug on your heartstring, and will make you wish you are from there 🩷

What a wonderful light hearted book, do not read this on an empty stomach, the descriptions of the baking made my mouth water on a regular basis. I'd love to say I'd have a bash at baking but I'll never get it right anyway.
The romance between the characters and the horrid ex trying to spoil it, made you want to ensure they stayed together, they had a competitive, loving funny relationship that is rare.
I actually liked how short each chapter was and it was well described, wishing magic was real.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
