A desperate princess. A prince in the dungeon. A midnight marriage to bring peace between their kingdoms.

Princess Adeline longs for the day she can ascend to the throne and bring about peace between her kingdom of Kelverny and the neighboring kingdom of Lalsacia. Only her warmongering grandfather, the current king, and the law requiring her to marry stand in her way.

When her grandfather is mortally wounded, Adeline must marry quickly before her grandfather arranges for her to marry the man of his choosing, a man who will keep her under his thumb as surely as she'd been under her grandfather's. Her only other choice? The enemy lord her grandfather tossed in the dungeon.

Prince Lorne of Lalsacia isn't sure what to think when the princess of Kelverny proposes marriage. She doesn't know she's proposing to a prince instead of a mere lord. Despite his secret, this could be his best chance for bringing about peace.

Can Lorne and Adeline survive the politics of her court long enough to bring about peace and, perhaps, find their way through their shadows and secrets to each other's hearts?

A cozy no spice fantasy romance novella perfect for reading in an evening!

Born and raised in Michigan, I enjoy traveling to new adventures that inspire my writing.

Growing up, I read just about every book I could get my hands on, especially fantasy. I currently write YA fantasy and romantic fantasy filled with lots of humor, spunky and tough leading ladies, and broken heroes.

When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with my chocolate lab, Miss Kisses.

4 stars ⭐️ Clean Fiction - Fantasy (with light magic)

Yeah, so that needed to be at least a hundred pages longer. I flew through that way too fast because I loved the couple together. 😂

Lorne is potentially the most capable male lead I’ve read in a fantasy book. He was great with Adeline, knew his stuff about kingdoms and ruling, and was honestly a great guy overall. Perhaps a bit perfect, but I’m not complaining because his leadership skills and capabilities were so attractive for a male lead.

This is going to be a really weird analogy, but stick with me for a moment: Adeline reminded me of those flowers that bloom in the middle of the crack in a sidewalk. She’s been manipulated, mistreated, and unloved by her grandfather, but she has still bloomed into a strong woman and yet still needs support. Lorne became that support like water and sunlight for her and it warmed my heart. I’m pretty sure I was smiling like a ninny over some of their cute moments.

I always pause before considering to read a book with either the marriage of convenience/arranged marriage trope or about a married couple because it usually adds in sexual suggestions and/or sexual tension between the couple. There was one kiss that felt a little much for my tastes because they were in a bedroom, but it never went farther (not hinted at and nothing else happened) which I greatly appreciated.

There was quite a bit about torture and blood, but nothing felt overly gruesome or graphic/detailed to my sensitive stomach.

Things wrapped up a little perfectly, but as a usual lover of plots wrapped with a bow by the end, I really can’t complain. Very good overall and I would be super interested in more books in this world/setting and especially in one about the next generation.

(As a personal note to the author in case she sees this review: In the acknowledgments you shared about writing this book after your dog passed in November of 2025. My heart aches for you knowing that pain and grief as I lost my beloved beagle in October of 2025. It is so extremely heartbreaking and I wish I could give you a hug, but will settle for saying that this random reader is sending you prayers and is so proud of you for writing this beautiful story through your grief. ❤️)

This was such a cute, cozy romance novella and perfect to help me start slowly getting out of my reading slump. Both Adeline and Lorne are very sweet individuals you want to root for as a reader, and I loved how supportive and protective Lorne was despite being total strangers at their wedding. There was just enough danger/political intrigue to make the story exciting. Also, I couldn’t REALLY use my own fleech dragon right about now.

This was a delightful no-spice romantasy novella from the wonderful Tara Grayce! I knew I was going to love it!

HEARTS AND SHADOWS is the perfect bite-sized standalone, complete with just the right amount of romance, court intrigue, and consoling miniature dragons. Adeline knows that when her grandfather the king dies, she'll be forced to marry one of his lords, becoming the puppet queen as her new husband prosecutes the war against the neighbouring kingdom of Lalsacia. But Adeline's parents gave their lives to the cause of peace and she is determined not to remain the tool of her grandfather after his death. So, when news comes that the old king has suffered a mortal wound, Adeline moves fast. Only one man can help her forge a new path for her kingdom: the enemy ambassador currently being tortured in her grandfather's dungeon.

Given the choice between more beatings and a secret marriage to a beleaguered princess, Lord Lorne naturally accepts. But he has secrets of his own: unbeknownst to Adeline or her countrymen, he's actually the crown prince of Lalsacia. But is that a secret he can share with his new wife?

From the moment I heard about this story - a stand-alone novella featuring an enemies-to-lovers political marriage of convenience - I knew I was going to love it. It was still even better than I expected. For one thing, it's just a tiny bit bit darker and spikier than other the other stories I've read from this author, even that other enemies-to-lovers political marriage of convenience, and the themes are just a little deeper and more serious. For another thing, Tara Grayce always does a great job of writing complex military and political situations, and although the court intrigue takes a back seat to the romance in this story, it's still really well done.

Most of all, though, I loved the central romance. I'm a huge fan of ETL stories in general, but I particularly like the ones where both characters are decent people who just happen to be on opposite sides of an ongoing conflict, and whose distrust of each other stems not from one of them being villainous but simply from years of cultural baggage. Beyond that, I really appreciated the ways Tara Grayce played with and upended the tropes she's using here. For instance, in most ETL marriage of convenience stories, the male lead is the prince of the bad guys; here the villainous kingdom is the one the female lead is from. Moreover, many political marriage of convenience stories are about the patriarchy forcing the female lead into a marriage for their own convenience, so that when the romance eventually reconciles the two leads, one can't help feeling that the patriarchy has in some sense won out. Not this story, which is about the female lead arranging her own marriage in order to escape the patriarchy. I thought it was an elegant way to eliminate some of the problematic elements that often accompany this trope.

This is a long review for a rather short story, but that's because this is a remarkably clever and meaty novella. I loved it!

I need another 300 pages of Lorne and Adeline cuteness! (Okay, I can compromise, at least 100, please and thanks 🥰)

I’m in the biggest reading slump of wanting to read everything but also nothing, haha, but these cuties sparked so much joy! The marriage of convenience is precious, their journey of being enemy kingdoms to friendship & trust to love so beautifully done. And the healing Adeline undergoes from being trapped under her manipulative grandfather’s thumb is moving.

Also, TINY HEALING DRAGONS. Say less. 😍

Liz Brand is a fantastic narrator, and I love listening to her bring Tara’s stories to life.

Highly recommend if you want a dash of espionage with your cuteness!

This was a very enjoyable read. Grayce has become a favorite author of mine. I thought the politics and the weight of the crown were really well thought out and plotted here. I enjoyed the world building for such a short book and I liked the familial/friendship relationships in this book too.

The romance of this was very slow. I think Grayce was right about this because of the heroine’s long term abuse under her grandfather but honestly, right when they built a good foundation, the book ended. I wanted more. Which is a point in this book’s favor to be sure, but I wish I could’ve seen a little more of their developing partnership and awareness of each other as well as the politics of the nations once the war ended. The day to day interactions that made the Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice book so strong were happening off page here.

That’s not to say this book wasn’t still good because it was. I was riveted and read it in two days and I loved both characters. Adeline was a gentle soul slowly coming into her own and Lorne was a strong, sensitive hero who grew into a role as a leader. I just wanted more (hence the 4 star rating!). I always want more! Haha. I really like this author and highly recommend her work.

Oh my word. I was not expecting this book to be so good! I listened to it as an audiobook and I'm convinced this is the way to read it. The main guy character didn't seem whimpy or or stupid which I hate in books. He was probably one of my best written men I have read. In the begining of the book both kingdoms were at war and are main characters Grandfather has died and she must ascend to he throne. I loved the "marriage of convenience" trope, especially when they learn to love eachother it just heals my heart. This book was so clean and wholesome, that I just melted listening to it. 100% recommend!!!

This was a quick read, but it packs a punch with a marriage of convenience plot between enemy kingdoms. I devoured it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Oh, and there are dragons. Need I say more? Highly recommend for anyone who loves fast paced fantasy romance with a dash of danger and charm.

An excellent and engaging romantasy! It’s short (really more a novella), but the characters are fleshed out and it doesn’t feel rushed. It’s a little cheesy and convenient in parts (especially later in the book), but not in a bad way. There’s political intrigue, some action and danger, and a well developed romance.

Definitely recommended for those in the mood for a quick and engaging romantasy.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence and torture, along with murder and assassination attempts, but nothing too detailed or gory on page. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is some healing magic. There is no mention of faith or God.

Trigger warning - an emotionally abusive and manipulative grandfather. Death of parents (in the past).

So good!!! This is a sweet and cozy little book, one that can be read in a few hours. I can see myself reaching for it whenever I need something light and hopeful. Even though it’s short it is well done and the characters are well developed. It’s even a bit funny!

Review:

I’ve been anticipating this book ever since Tara Grayce started sharing about it in her newsletters! It was such a nice, quick, and lighter fantasy book to enjoy. I loved getting to know Adeline, Lorne, and the rest of the cast of characters! I loved Lorne’s protective nature when it came to Adeline and that he went all in on his desire for peace. I loved that Adeline found solace with Lorne, even when she wasn’t sure if she could 100% trust him yet or not. I loved seeing the secrets that were being kept and trying to figure out who was trying to control/oust the royal line throughout the story. I also loved the dragons we saw for a small amount of time! I loved the way they worked in this world and the special ability they were desired for.

I’m not sure if Tara Grayce plans on writing more books set in this world or not, but I wouldn’t be opposed to reading more books if they were to be set here!

Summary:

Princess Adeline has wished her parents’ desire for peace between the two kingdoms would continue even after their death. But her grandfather took hold of their deaths as the reason to start a war. Now with word that he’s been mortally wounded, Adeline needs to move up her timelines to become queen as soon as possible and end the war. And the only way she can claim the throne is with marriage. Choosing to marry one of the other kingdom’s emissaries might be the only way to truly bring peace even sooner with how her grandfather treated them. Especially since her grandfather would do everything in his power to marry her off to someone who would try to control her even as he lies dying.

Prince Lorne dashed to the neighboring kingdom with high hopes that peace could be achieved, only to have them dashed when he and his team were relegated to the dungeons. So when an offer to marry the princess of the kingdom is made to him, Lorne is quick to accept. She doesn’t know that he’s her enemy’s heir and he isn’t about to tell her that, not with peace so close at hand. Only things are much harder for Princess Adeline’s ascension than he could have imagined. As he watches her grow into the role she’s gained, Lorne finds a new hope brewing. One that may last them long after peace has officially come. If only she knew his secret…

This was perfect - I think I read somewhere that this was the right length to read in an evening, curled up, or something. So, I opted to read it tonight, with a mug of tea, and it was lovely.

I know Tara Grayce considers this a cozy story…I haven’t yet figured out what indefinable thing makes something cozy or not-cozy to me, and this may be very much a “me” response to different books. I didn’t find this entirely cozy. I was stressed for Adeline and concerned for her safety through large parts of the book, and for Lorne’s health and safety through smaller parts of the book. Even knowing it’s a romance and would end happily. It still had me on edge in places. This probably enhanced rather than hurt the story for me, but that’s in part because it was a novella I could read in a single sitting, and because I chose to read it on a Saturday when I had time to finish before it got super late.

In any case, I appreciate that both the political situation and Adeline’s responses to all she’s been through are not treated lightly or superficially. It’s a flaw of romance books sometimes. The author wants to create sympathy so gives a character a difficult backstory that is miraculously healed or recovered from as soon as the character finds love. It’s okay, it’s a romance, which is in some ways always a fantasy…but I do appreciate it when an author allows for more realistic character development and character arcs. Grayce also spent some time developing the political situation that put her characters into the positions they are in, and likewise, all is not instantly resolved just because the main characters get married or just because the countries end up with a peace treaty. Grayce only gives herself a break in skipping ahead in time, or dwelling more on other aspects of the story than on the politics. But she does include the politics, and it is clear that the happy ending for the romance does not immediately and instantaneously mean all will be easy and well within the kingdom(s) involved.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Hearts and Shadows is less of an Enemy to Lovers and more of a desperate time call for desperate measures.

When your grandfather is a king set on war, what is the ultimate act of rebellion. Marrying the enemy peace ambassador he threw in the dungeon. Naturally.

But this isn't really about rebelling against authority either. Princess Adeline needs a husband to take the throne after her Grandfather passes. And she has no intention of being a puppet for her grandfather's chosen heir.

This is a very well orchestrated novella. Adeline is a strong woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to use the letter of the law to get it.

Adeline and Lorn are a well matched couple. One a queen with a tenuous hold on her own power, the other a prince from an enemy nation.

But they fall into the same trap as all the other fantasy couples. They don't communicate.

The main conflict of the story was all because they couldn't talk on each other. Him not wanting to reveal he was the prince, her not wanting to give classified intelligence to an enemy lord.

This was clean, no spice, kisses only story. However, I did think it was weird that no one questioned whether the marriage was consummated. I don't want to see it obviously but you'd think someone would have mentioned it, especially one of the lords that was so against the marriage in the first place.

The narrator for the Audiobook did a fantastic job reading the various characters on distinct voices, though I'm not sure what accent she was giving Lorn. Sounded like a cross between a Scottish and a Spanish accent.

Having just finished The Huntress by Carrie Cotten, this is a similar story of an enemy prince marrying a princess to unite the warring kingdoms. While Cotten provides a longer, evocative, heart wrenching tale of mistrust between the Woodland queen and Tower king, Grayce's romantasy is short and sweet.

Adeline tries her best to become a worthy queen, although her grandfather, the king, left her unprepared, expecting his choice for her consort to continue the war.

Lorne is a brash young prince who thinks he can easily broker peace between their countries until King Jaroldo ignores the flag of truce and throws the prince into his dungeon.

Adeline, at a suggestion from her most trusted advisor, sets out to marry Lorne, thinking him only an enemy noble, thus thwarting her grandfather's choice for consort.

Lorne agrees to the hasty marriage, thinking it's the best solution, although he's the crown prince.

But will his hidden identity, and multiple assassination attempts derail their alliance?

Fun, quick read with swoony kisses and tiny dragons. Tara Grayce is an auto buy for me.

SO GOOD

Hearts and Shadows is a gripping novella that follows two characters working against all odds to bring peace to their kingdoms and maybe figure out if a hasty marriage made towards that end can last. Adeline has grown up with a controlling war mongering grandfather who has wreaked havoc on her confidence and feelings of readiness to be queen. She is courageous, empathetic, and dutiful but also insecure and worried about failing her people. Lorne is confident (except about his ability to withstand torture), clever, supportive, and patient but also secretive and a bit impulsive. Can the two bring an end to a years long war?

Hearts and Shadows is a standalone novella with clean romance, a little bit of violence and wound care, and a little made up fantasy swearing. It is also a delightful story with very lovable MCs and dragons. A great quick read full of heart and strength through sacrifice and encouragement.

Some risks are worth it all

Adeline’s window to choose her spouse is suddenly here, and she can’t choose any of the men from her own kingdom. At least, not without falling right into her grandfather’s twisted games. Her only option is the enemy prisoner in the dungeon—the one man who still meets the requirements, but isn’t under her grandfather’s thumb.

Lorne came for peace and was immediately thrown into the dungeon and beaten mercilessly. When the princess comes with an offer of marriage, it seems like the only option that will lead to the end of the war. Lorne agrees to the marriage, but he knows the consequences are coming. Hopefully they can both survive them.

A story of courage, choice, and love.

Peace is worth risk-taking

Princess Adeline and Prince Lorne are committed to bringing peace to their kingdoms, and when the opportunity comes, they seize it. I loved how the book combined the ideas of marrying the enemy prince and hidden identities. This is a story where both sides may be hiding things from the other, but only out of political necessity. Other than politically dangerous intel, the two of them have a real relationship built on real truths, and they both try to treat each other with love and respect. They are a wonderful pairing, and I enjoyed watching them turn the courts' opinion in their favor. Hearts and Shadows offers a wonderful pairing of strong character development with an engaging plot. Clean in language and content. Highly recommend.

Warm and Fuzzy Comfort Read

This author always delivers characters we relate to and root for. This prince and princess wanted the same thing but an entire kingdom of warriors and politicians stood in their way.

Only four stars because I wasn’t convinced the marriage would have happened that quickly, and the ease of the resolution didn’t feel earned.

Also, the character change for the princess happened in a snap, and that pushed me out of the story.

Still, I devoured this book and walked away with warm, fuzzy feelings. This author is one of my favorites for that guaranteed payoff.

Well this was darling! I absolutely love when an author puts a guy in a basement, I can't explain it.

Two countries are at war, and Princess Adeline is desperate for peace--even desperate enough to marry the enemy diplomat in the castle dungeon. Except she doesn't realize that's the enemy crown prince. The two heirs to the throne must work together, and I loved how sweet and supportive they were, especially as the prince asserts her right to rule with her own people.

This was the perfect weekend read. If you wanted a cozy fantasy version of Hawksong, this absolutely fits the bill!

This book was really great. I was worried that, as a novella, it would be lacking details or I'd be missing things. But I was pleasantly surprised with how well Tara did with including just enough detail that I didn't feel confused, but keeping it brief for the purpose of a shorter book. The relationship that she was able to develop between Adaline and Lorne was really great and she did an amazing job conveying their emotions. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who wants a lighter romantasy for a cozy night in.

I adore anything I’ve read by Tara Grayce and Hearts and Shadows is no exception. Two kingdoms are at war and the two royals caught in the crosshairs have to navigate the intrigue thrust upon them. The whole book I was on the edge of my seat rooting for Adeline to succeed and cheering Lorne and Adeline’s efforts to bring an end to the war and work to find a way to build a life together despite all the obstacles in their way.

(happy) Sigh. This book has it all. A protective and sacrificing MMC, a sweet and courageous FMC, a twisty plot, and - of course - dragons. This novella from Tara Grayce has one of my absolute favorite tropes - arranged marriage - and the MCs actually seek to make it a good, healthy marriage from the start. I’m so glad I got a copy of it, and it will 100% be one of my favorite re-reads in years to come.

Easy story

This was a very simple read. Best for a quick escape that takes no investment. The story is short, so don't expect depth, but it was a fun, clean read for a sunny afternoon.
Go in expecting a rushed story with little character depth or development, and you will not be disappointed.
4 🌟 for its simplicity and being a quick read. 0 🌶 (2 very chaste kisses with almost no description)

Really enjoyed this story

Crown Princess Adeline was desperate for peace, however her grandfather the king was determined to destroy the neighboring kingdom. Despite her grandfather's cruelty, control and refusal to allow her any say, I loved how she was a woman of strength and honor. Lorne too wanted peace and to help Adeline.

A great feel good read.

I must be a romantic because I love happily ever after type stories. Our heroine has had a very tough time of it after the death of her parents and her only remaining family member being a tyrant. In the end she has her happily ever after, more than she ever thought possible.

The only problem with this is its length

Because I want MORE! But since I'm also eagerly waiting for MANY more elf stories, I am VERY torn. But they were just so utterly perfect. Maybe I should quibble and say that no two people could be THAT perfect. But I loved reading it so much that I'll forgive both those eensy little flaws. Maybe I'll even say "flaws".

This is probably the sweetest and most romantic story from Tara Grayce yet! I love me a good marriage of convenience story, and Tara delivers!
Love seeing how Adeline and Lorne make their desperate situations work. Plus watching them fall in love was so sweet and swoony! I hope we get more in this world!
Extra kudos for Liz Brand’s narration!
