In this short and powerful book, the apostle James gives us practical guidance on issues that measure true and living faith. Through an emphasis on spiritual fruitfulness, James calls all believers-then and now-to live a life that demonstrates genuine, saving faith marked by godly behavior. A key leader in the Jerusalem church and oldest half brother of Jesus, James wrote this epistle to Jewish believers who had been scattered by persecution. Out of compassion, he confronted Christians to test the quality and consistency of their faith. The MacArthur Study Guide Series provides a twelve week, verse-by-verse examination of the books of the New Testament. This revised and updated series continues to be one of the best-selling study guides currently available for individuals or small groups.
John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
I read this study in conjunction with JAMES, THE STEADFAST LIFE by Kristin schmucker. interestingly enough, her study was very repetitive and even quoted this study once. His insights on the study and the summaries are great. I didn’t engage in the questions, as that wasn’t by intent during this study. Great guide!
Super repetitive. Almost all personal application questions. Did not feel that it lead me to a better understanding of God or His Scriptures. Only one week of this study had any takeaways for me at all.
MacArthur is an intelligent, gifted theologian, preacher, etc. I have many of his bible commentaries. This one is not as in depth as some of the others he has published, but it may be perfect for the level of detail you are looking for.
I read this book as part of a men's bible study group studying the book of James. As always, the MacArthur guide provided great insight, structure and provocative questions for the lively group discussions.
I effective study guide on the book of James. I would recommend this book for Sunday school or something similar. He provides a lot of questions in each chapter, which would be great for group discussion.
Not counting toward my total reading for 2009 as I didn't finish. What I did read was interesting, though it was not as riveting as other spiritual/biblical reading I have done this year.
I enjoyed this study. It took me awhile to complete it because the lessons are a little lengthier and encourage some reflection. It was insightful and challenging.
